This quest begins with Leaf Falldim in Kithicor Forest (location 1393, 2279).

You say, 'Hail, Leaf Falldim'

Leaf Falldim says 'Greetings, _____! Respect the woods and all its inhabitants or face the wrath of the rangers. Do not end up like [Maldyn Greenburn].'

You say, 'Who was Maldyn Greenburn?'

Leaf Falldim says 'Maldyn was once one of us. He was the finest of archers. Everyone aspired to be like him. He soon was tempted to hunt. The animals of these woods found themselves nothing more than moving targets for Maldyn's training. We held a trial and exiled him to parts unknown. He would take with him Morin's [Bow of Kithicor]. I was asked to find a worthy ranger to [retrieve the bow].'

You say, 'What is the Bow of Kithicor?'

Leaf Falldim says 'The Bow of Kithicor was carved from an ancient tree. It has great powers which were attributed to a portion of the tree's mana. I seek a brave ranger to [retrieve the bow].'

You say, 'I will retrieve the bow'

Leaf Falldim says 'Search the lands of the Unkempt Druids in the Rathe Mountains. I have heard of his arrows being found inside its territories and of his death wish to hunt down its leader. Retrieve the bow and return it to me and I shall give you the ivy etched gauntlets.'

Hunt down Maldyn Greenburn (a wayward master archer) in the Rathe Mountains by the unkempt druids and retreive Broken Bow Part A.

Part B drops from Slaythe the Slayer in Lower Guk.

After handing in Broken Bow Part A and Broken Bow Part B:

Leaf Falldim says 'This is but a portion of the bow. I must have the other part.'

Leaf Falldim says 'You have performed well, brave ranger. Put these upon your hands. Protection from the strongest of bowstring and magic are their greatest power. I do believe we have another mission which may yield you the [ivy etched leggings].'

Your faction standing with Kithicor Residents got better.
Your faction standing with Protectors of Pine got better.
Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk got better.
Your faction standing with Unkempt Druids got worse.
You gain experience!!

Just FYI, Slaythe the Slayer despawned at 8AM (EQ time). Just my luck, I was about to take him out after taking out his 2 minotaur friends in the same room, and poof, he despawns :(. I think a number of the named spawns for quests despawn at this time.

The PH for Slaythe always despawns at 8am if no one kills him first. The PH is the middle mino of the three in the round dead end room north of the Jail Room on the Live side. If you kill the PH after he respawns, around ~9am EQ time, you will get three possible chances for Slaythe that EQ day. The PH spawns every 10 hours EQ time, or ~30 minutes real time.

Here's the time line for the best possible chance at Slaythe:
8am PH despawns
~10am PH spawns, Kill PH
~8pm PH spawns, Kill PH
~4am PH spawns, let him despawn if not Slaythe
8am PH despawns
~10am PH spawns, Kill PH
Repeat...

Don't bother killing the two mobs on either side of the center one. It will only drop your faction for the Live side needlessly. Any of the three mobs can be either minos or frogs, but mostly minotaurs.

I got Slaythe to spawn on 4/23/2007 at the 4am EQ time. The cycle above saves a little bit of time. If you kill the 4am PH before he despawns you will have to wait until 2pm EQ time for the next pop of the PH. So use the despawn to your (slight) advantage! I had to kill 14 PH's before I got Slaythe to pop. Sheesh.

Now if only the Reanimated Hand would drop the Adamantite Band for my Call of Flame spell ! :-) I've killed that one 37 times so far, and counting...

You have slain Maldyn the unkempt!
You gain experience!!
Maldyn the unkempt's corpse says 'Arrghh.. Now I shall never reclaim the other bow part from.. Gukk.. Slay.. thhhh..'
Your song ends.
You receive 10 silver, 14 copper from the corpse.
--You have looted a Broken Bow Part A.--

Blue at 39, was on hasten/zephyl spawn, he was running back and forth by the liz camp in the HG valley just like hasten and after he died "a drake" popped. No faction hits though he was apprehensive to me like regular unkempt druids (FYI unkempt druids are OK for rangers to kill, many Surefall quests give neg hits with them I think they are enemies of rangers.)

I have a ranger in full ivy minus gloves because I've played for over a year and never seen Maldyn. Yesterday I had my 39 bard out in Rathe Mtns and he was up. Fairly easy to solo I had 1 buff like skin like steel or something up and I switched from haste/heal/chains to dot/heal/chains because his damage shield was hurting. He broke chains in flee mode and he's pretty fast for someone with less than 1 bar of health left. Too bad my ranger is on another server but thats OK cause I have a halfling ranger on this one and he can have some new gloves. I probably would never try this quest activly unless I was hard up for the resists on the gloves because for the hassle of it there are many comparable gloves out there like darkmail, iksar scale and ry'gorr just to name a few but if you run into Maldyn and have a ranger or ranger friend why not.

Ok, it's safe to say we know how to find Maldyn the Unkempt and kill him... now how about that stupid frog in Lower Guk... I have been looking for him for almost a year now, on and off and have spent well over 40 hours running around the entire area surrounding the jail killing everything in site... Does anyone actually know where he spawns?

I've been camping rathe mountains for two days hunting hill giants with a shaman friend for the money (I'm a poor ranger).

I tracked down a hill giant, snared and dotted him when what I thought was another player trying to steal my kill, which seems to happen often there because of the scarcity of the hill giants and you don't always see the other player. I was getting ready to send a tell to Maldyn, when I realized who he was. He killed my giant but I pulled Maldyn to our camp and killed him and got his drop.

Lucky or what? He spawned at the south side of the hill giant mesa and I never saw him on my track, though I was looking for him.

Long Post but worth the detail. I was a lvl 41 Ranger at the time of this quest. Here is the scoop on Maldyn the Unkempt. Goto Rathe Mountains zone. Track and see who is currently up (you will have to move toward the center of the zone to get accurrate info on Track). There are 3 possibilities (Hasten Bootstrutter(who cons blue), Brother Zephyl(who cons Red), or Maldyn the Unkempt (who cons Blue). I will say now that unless someone has killed Maldyn's Place Holder, chances are it won't be him. If Hasten or Brother are up then Maldyn won't spawn since they all share the same spawn table. There is a druid circle North of the Lake Rathe Zone past the Gypsies (LOC = P4900, P1800) where there is a druid named Albain Tinderbrand (cons very Green to a lvl 41 Ranger). He will most likely be Amiable. Buff up completely, med completely, and KILL HIM. This affects the spawn table. You will take a faction hit ... so what. This is a long camp even WHEN you try to affect the spawn table. Move South after you kill druid and if you are lucky then Brother or Hasten will disappear and you will see "a drake" on your tracking (he cons Green so make sure you aren't filtering at this time). Track down the "a drake" which usually spawns near the Hill Giant Bowl Gaurd Tower (Loc = P113, P1205), or on a hill between Haunted Stones and Lizard Man Camp (Loc = Neg507, Neg1097), or near south middle of zone (Loc = N513, P658). Once the "a drake" is dead heal up quickly and med/track. Since you buffed up before killing the druid you should be fine for Maldyn if you are lucky enough to have him spawn. Either Maldyn, Brother, or Hasten can spawn after the "a drake" is dead. Move up to the HG Hill Gaurd Tower area ASAP as this is where Maldyn will spawn (LOC = P540, P1540) amongst some trees or down at the bottom of the HG Hill (Loc = P343, P2250). If Maldyn spawns great, you are very lucky. Tactics for Maldyn -- Snare him cause he runs with SOW speed and is a nut who might go running up to top of HG Hill and attack anything in his way. Maldyn is KOS to Cyclops and HG and will attack litterally anything like Large Skeletons ect ... Once you have his attention kite him carefully (avoid HGs, Cyclops, and Skeletons) using Reckless Lightning, if you planned correctly you are at full mana and have thistle shield on and fire fist plus other usual buffs. Keep moving in South Easternly direction away from the busy HG Bowl area toward (LOC = N513, P658) area. Keep nuking Maldyn every chance you get followed quickly with a bow shot and you will drop him fast down on health. I suggest this strategy because even if you are right near where Maldyn spawns he immediately puts up his damage shield and if you try to melee him you will almost certainly have a near death experience or worse (trust me)... If all goes well Maldyn will be very low on health and you will be fresh, he will try to cast a few spells on you like ignite and maybe try to root you, I resisted all root attempts and took miminal damage with my endure fire buff on. Engage Maldyn with Meelee to quicken his end and maybe back off and blast him one last time. When he died for me, he had the Broken Bow Part A.

If after you killed "a drake" and Maldyn didn't spawn you might see another "a drake". I killed seven "a drake" in a row before Brother spawned, so I wasn't going to take that laying down. I ran back up to Druid ring and killed Albain again and Brother promptly disappeared and I saw "a drake" on my track so I found "a drake" and killed it. Within minutes Maldyn the Unkempt spawned and he died as described above.

Now... On to Lower Guk for Slaythe the Slayer...

Note: Loc = Location on Map and the first number is in degrees North/South while the second number is Degrees East/West.

Special Note: Don't go too far south of
Loc = Neg 513, P658 as RHARZAR (a named drake cons Red) is down there who will kill you in under 10 seconds. Also don't worry about a dark elf named Kazzel D`Leryt (cons Red) or his pet (cons blue) as they will NOT agro on you.

Many say the Gauntlets aren't worth it. I disagree. Questing is fun. I am proud I figured a lot of this out from posts, tells, and trial and error. Not bad camp, only 2 nights for total of 14 hours and most of that was learning the rules. Have fun. I will post with news on Slaythe.

Hats off to you Rorik! This works great!
I killed Albain and headed towards the HG valley. The spawn was not instant(which gave me time to med and buff to full) but a drake did spawn near the guard tower. I killed a drake and Hasten spawned. I went back and killed Albain again and then had a long wait before a drake spawned again. But it did eventually spawn. I killed him and noticed that Hasten was no longer on track. I sat down to med and had to only wait about five minutes max before Maldyn spawned. He was blue to me at 41. I was able snare him and knock him down to under half, using my bow and nukes, before engaging him in melee combat. Right after he died Brother Zephyl was on the hill.

One more thing I wanted to add....
I noticed that Maldyn does spawn. In fact, he spawned 3x in a row. The problem is he spawned right next to a cyclops or hill giant. He gets killed in less than 10 seconds so I immediately lose him off track. All the ph's are on a 8minute cycle so be prepared to check your track several times at the 8 minute mark. Do whatever it takes to pull him away from the hill. Oh, and all 3x he spawned was around the base of the giant hill.

# Jul 27 2001 at 11:30 AM Rating: Decent
I don't think the killing of albain is entirely accurate.
I've been in Rathe Mountains for about 4 days now. I've seen the "a drake" about 10 times and Hasten 5 times. No Maldyn. I've killed albain 5 times trying to get the ph, hasten or brother, to despawn and have had no luck at all. This quest is impossible and im tired of all the people saying how long they waited for brother or hasten to spawn. In my experience, they only have to wait 30 mins for one of them to pop.
Good luck to all fellow rangers camping Maldyn...bring a pillow.

I could have sworn that in my halfling cleric's early life that I had the unpleasant meeting of Slaythe, a froglok. He was on the harder side of the wall near a giant stump to the far right. I ran back out there to loot my corpse and watched someone kill him, who said he had to talk to an NPC to make Slaythe appear.

I could be wrong but could this be the same Slaythe?

Also, if you talk to the Captain above the entrance in High Hold Keep and tell him that you are the bounty hunter, he calls you the mighty Slaythe. Weird...

He spawns somewhere near the HG bowl. I have found that if he is being attacked by a HG or Cyclopse and help him out while waiting for help he will not attack you when the fight is over. Hope this helps.

Well i agrea get your guantlets but get something else to wear cause these just plain suck. You will be hurting yourself if you wear these gloves when you are dragon or plane capable. I am sure people have them and wear them and yes being in full ivy is great but you being a ranger your going have no choice but to up your ac if you want to survive
RE: Ginlaan
# Mar 11 2002 at 12:47 AM Rating: Decent
Ironically, when you're doing dragons and planes, ac means almost nothing. I swap out my barbed ringmail for a dwarven ringmail tunic (losing 18 raw ac, 50hp and 9str) for those 8svMagic, Cold, Fire. I'm going to go do this quest at 52, or maybe after I ding 53 and can farm the HGs a little easier while I'm waiting for him.

The age old argument, AC vs. Saves. Guess what - it's situational! In your grind groups, sure, AC is definitely king. Chances are, aggro is going to bounce around, and will probably end up with you from time to time.

Now, in raid situations, aggro better not stick with you, or you're toast anyway. Better to keep the AoE damage from eating you, and for that you need Saves.

As always, just one Ranger's opinion.

I am tired of people complaining because they have to actually sit and camp someone or something. I have the part from Maldyn already and will be heading to L Guk soon. Well I have just stated playing Everquest 2 months ago. Yes you have to camp alot of items but that is part of questing. I have been playing Roleplaying games most of my life and I am sorry to say that you have to sepnd time to get things that are not just handed to you on a silver platter. Also for the wise crack about having a life and a job. I have a full time job called the military. Also I have another part time job that I do not get paid for but donate about 16 hours a week too. I also have enough tiem to play EQ and have fun. I have learned alot from more experienced player and they have learned some things about roleplaying from me. If you do not like questing for items then find a GM event or go to Velious or Kunark and have them given too you.

Maybe folks complain about having to sit and camp, because they actually want to PLAY a game, not enter a game that requires more of doing nothing, than anything else. Many of the quests in Everquest are the of worst design I have ever seen. Maybe they should change the name to Evercamp, cause that's what most of the "quests" consist of.

For you, who have no life outside the game, I'm glad you enjoy the inactivity. If I didn't have a job, and other REAL responsibilities, I'd have less of a problem with 24-hour camps.....

I think I can speak for everyone on this topic. Please people when you know that someone has been camping for a long time, don't pester them about when they are going to leave. Don't sit down next to them to "wait" until they are done. You might be waiting a long time and then the time it takes for you to complete your camp on top of that. The NPC will always respawn and will always be there. Just ask them kindly if they will send you a tell when they are done and 9 times out of 10 they will. These players are tired from camping that long of a period and quite understandably a little grouchy and become extremely nervous at the thought of someone possibly stealing their kill. So, be courteous.

you must be kidding. Can you honestly feel that person breathing down your neck? Someone needs to remove all of these 'courtesy' posts as a courtesy to those who think they're stupid and unecessary. Never has someone waiting beside me annoyed me UNLESS they then tried to steal it from me.
