For those of you wondering if this quest is worthwhile; all I can say is it beats your NUB armor and if you're like me, you like to EARN your items - not buy or inherit them - and the two mob's you must kill are in zones adjacent to one another...what more could you ask for?

For Maldrath the Malignant just ask (nicely) a 45+ shammy or cleric to come in with you - assuming you are in your HIGH 30's - and whoop the snot out of that nasty little gnome and his mutant cow-men. Keep all your buffs up and drink some magic resist potion before you hit the caves. I think mine was Vampiric Blood. YUCK. Magic resist = 97...and away you go.

Thistle Underbrush was tough to find in Lesser Faydark UNTIL I realized he conned green to me. Keep in mind I was level 39 at the time. At that point I ran like a half elf possesed and on sight SNARED him - I made some nice homemade brownie batter and walked away with my rune of Ivy no problem.

Enjoy this one...none can be as easy as this or as satisfying!

You hand in the pieces to Gandari in Kithicor Forest, she's in a hut with some merchants in the north part of the zone. Hail her first just to be on the safe side, then hand in the rune of ivy from Thistle, the skull of Meldrath and two rubies (137pp each from jewellry vendors, try the bazaar first).

Where in LFay does the thistle brownie spawn? I searched the entire zone for over an hour one night and could not find him. Will I track him as "a thistle brownie", or some other name?

Correction....he is a VERY common spawn. I kill him constantly for the "befriend animal" potion he drops.
Not sure of the spawn timer but would guess 30 minutes? I usually find something to do like hit GFay vendors, Unrest or Meldrath whil I wait for my next potion.

I bought my rubies. I killed thistle.

Tried to kill Meldrath with help from 41 druid. No luck.

Made a pathetic (but humorous) ooc plea and got a lvl 60 warrior to kill meldrath for me.

I may be pathetic but now I am a pathetic ranger in an Ivy Etched Tunic. Time to retire my Dwarven Ringmail tunic I've had since lvl 14!!

Myself 32 Ranger, 31 Pally and 30 Mage took him out last evening....

It was helpful that a 57 something had 'broken' the room previously - as we only had to fight Meldrath without his pet - and was still tough.

He dispelled everything on me but 2 buffs (out of 9-10) - dispelled our mage's buffs as well. We jumped him as soon as he popped - i don't think he ever got a dmg shield up, certainly not a pet.

It may be difficult to harmony the guards away first - as the room is positioned so that you have to come into the guards aggro. before you can see them - but it might be able to be done. Incidentally - his skull is not a 100% drop.. since the first time we helped kill him - he did not drop. Later when it was just our low 30's grp which took him out - presto - last piece for my Tunic.

As to thistle I am now 3 for 4 solo, 1 for 1 with friend. Got him early first time prior to his dmg shield and it was easy. I died after chasing him willy nilly all over, to his nukes, my low mana (my fault), and dmg shield. I have gotten the rune everytime (well -it's been there every time) and the cords once ...
Happy hunting - now for the rubies

Hey yall I'm a lv 31 ranger and I'm tired of my banded so I decided to go for these ivy etched armor pieces. So I got the bracers not much of a problem here and I killed Thistle and bought the rubies. Now for Meldrath. I know I wouldn't be able to beat him on my own so what kind of party to you suggest to help me? I got many choices cuz we have almost everything in our guild so what is the best balanced party for fighting Meldrath? Preferrably one where no one dies :) Thanks

As a general rule, do NOT stack items when turning them in. There are exceptions to this, but in cases like this one, make sure each ruby is in its own slot or he'll probably consider it 1 item and you'll need another ruby to complete. There is no order. Just hand him all four items (putting the rubies in a slot versus just dropping them on him, which will stack them) and click trade. You should be rewarded with a new tunic.

First fought Thistle Underbrush at 27. He kicked my butt even though he conned Dark Blue. Lost corpse etc, etc. Tried him again at 30th, still Dark Blue, this time I had Stinging Swarm DOT and my new Centi ss. Snared him as his health went below half. Finished him off but I had no mana left and was down to one bubble health but I got my rune.
A few minutes later im in Steamfont heading towards the Mino caves (Im feeling lucky). I head into caves with the hope of pulling Guards and meldrath to the windmills where the gnome guards will take care of most of my problem. Then i'll sit back and wait. I'll attack gnome guards as meldraths health goes below half. Thats my plan but I never made it outta the caves alive.
Feeling depressed I get my corpse back and go to leave Steamfont for awhile. As Im gettin ready to zone to Lfay a 60th rogue asks me to track Yender Starpyre for him. The thought hits me that if I help him maybe hell help me. It worked and the 60th rogue took care of the Minos and Meldrath and I got my skull.
Last part of quest is the rubies. U can get them in NFreeport from Jade. She wants 150pp for each of them (Ouch!) thats 300pp. Spent all my money buying a Centi ss last week. Guess I better go hunting.

Some information on this quest, having recently done it. WOOT! Thistle is best tracked from the ranger's area in Lfay. You will need SoW to get him, as he has SoW, and it is best to chase him down while camoed. You can solo him around 32-33 for sure, but he has SoW, a damage shield and other buffs on, and will cast your tail off if you try and kite him. Best advice is to DoT him, go in swinging and snare when he runs. You will need a group for Meldrath, period. Our tactic was, I (34 ranger), went in camoed to survey. Backed away from Meldrath and two guards, cast GR on strongest mino and ran to exit. Before I hit exit, Meldrath had slowed, feared twice, dispelled twice and hit a DoT on me. MR was 44 but nothing was resisted. I died at exit, other ranger (49) and druid (27) cleaned up Meldrath and guard. Other mino never showed up. A full group should go in camoed, surround Meldrath in cave and pummel him down. Then take care of guards. You can camp there if necessary for another kill and get Meldrath before buffs are on and pet is summoned. Get rid of SoW and WALK, so fear is not as effective, then RUN back to fight when fear wears off. Pulling Meldrath will get him, but you will probably sacrifice one member of group, seen it happen 4 times, including my own. If Hero is up, you will want to take it out first and alone. If he joins the fight, youre in big trouble. Good Hunting!

SoW or walk shouldnt make a difference.

As you always walk at a certain speed when feared... try beeing so encumbered so that you cant walk and have someone fear you... you will walk... :)

OK. What does snaring do, it slows the creature down. What does a necro do? He casts a snare spell and then fear, which slows him down. If they don't snare it, it runs away much faster. Haven't you ever played a necro or an sk?

Still, the movement rate for feared characters ( Not NPCs, mind you ) is identical/standardized, regardless of SoW, SoE, Snare or Treeform...whatever - you simply move at identical speed if feared. Its one of the many big differences between effects on NPCs and PCs.... like, lesser damage on PCs, non-LoS restircted castibg for NPCs, you name it. Have you ever played at high levels where NPCs actually fear you ?

Hello Here is my Story ..

I am a lvl 49 Druid who is hopelessly addicted to Trade Skills woot a master in all I can.

I found a guide for tinkering so I though I will go to Steamfont and learn to TINKER..

I get to the winmill and the merchants con Apprehensive.

/ooc How do I raise faction with gnomes ?
/ooc You have to kill minotaurs :p Goodluck
/ooc Thankyou your so Kind.

So I pull out the maps and head to mino cave.
Walk in kill kill kill Greens easy not looking at maps anymore coz on trak all green.

Follow the tunnels im sort of lost now when BANG BANG BANG im half dead Meldrath The Malignant and 2 Minotaur guards are kicking my arse.

Thanks to SOW im out of range in a jiffy OUTSIDE where its safe.

Root Mino Guard run some more Root other mino guard run some more Root Meldrath The Malignant stop and apply snare and the Drifting death Dot move back to first mino apply DOT and snare and so on with the last mino and sit away from them and watch them COOK.

I had to heal my self 3 times as Meldrath The Malignant casts on you and fears you.

But I killed all 3 with 10% mana left only loot I got was Skull of Meldrath The Malignant.

After all this killing I go back and con the merchants DAM APPREHENSIVE STILL what a waste of 30 mins lol ...

Question I have can you dual quest this item as I have a few rangers in our guild who could possibly use this item..

Well I thought I would post a little information on how we obtained the items for the ivy BP (I know others have but this is just another way that we did it). First off a very kind Level 50 ranger and me, a level 27 ranger took off to Steamfront in search of the evil Meldrath and his cronies. The High level ranger ran into the mino caves to draw out the pet to lead it to the guards, problem was that once killed by the guards good old Meldrath summoned another so time for a new tactic. (Oh by the way I was waiting outside while all this was happening).

The best way we found to do it was for the high level ranger to pull the mino guards out to me where I would then take them to the guards (stopping them helping Meldrath). He would wait in the room that Meldrath spaws in (after leading him to the guards the first time because there were to many adds to handle him), and as soon as he spawned hit him with all he had. This made it easier because Meldrath did not have time to summon a pet or put up his damage shield (which can hurt a duel wielding ranger). The lev 50 ranger would make short work of the little bugger, using about 80m. So after three kills we got two skulls, then off to get Thistle Underbush.

Now this is one fast little runt!! Without SOW no way can you catch him, or snare to stop him running. He was pretty easy to kill with a lev 50 and lev 27 ranger so no need for any tactics there. We were lucky enough to get the ivy cords as well on first kill. Hehe one tip however, don’t stand around congratulating yourself for a job well done :-), other wise you may find a Brownie scout hitting you :-). Two deaths (mine, oh ding 26 :-)) later and a lost corpse, then the death of the lev 50 ranger to that damn corrupt horse while trying to lead it away from me to get my corpse, we had all the items. Thankyou to the brave Ranger for his heroic efforts and helping me to obtain the ivy BP I will wear it with pride. Now just off to get the rubies. Hope this little info helps all the budding rangers out there.

Cheers

I think it'd come out to which you would rather be. A wannabe tank or more of a caster? Since rangers are wis casters the ivy etched would be better for people who like their spells to... and the extra AC is always nice for tanks. Personally i'd go with the Ivy Etched for a ranger. 3AC isn't THAT much and the tunic gives you 3str as well. So yeah... that's my 2cp worth

My friend is doing these quests. I'm doing the Sol Ro cleric ones. Both are essetnially the level 30ish quests Verant but in for each class in the game so you'd be guarenteed some cool armor if your big on questing...

But why did for all these quests they decide to make a expensive material component? two rubies for this one, two plat bars for mine, so on so forth

Given the degree to which a person must travel the world, risk death from random mobs, gain alliances from other players, rarely but occasionally wait for a MoB cause it's camped, and generally bust his balls, couldn't we have at least avoided having to break our bank too for this stuff?

my two cents. Verant should tone down the material components for these quests. If the ivy/sol ro armors were only breastplates it'd be one thing... but requiring those expensive componets for every piece...

we can see how much Verant REALLY cares about RPers and questers...

He brings up a good point about how Verant is asking a little much for us to go and buy any where from 1-3 jewels. Myself I am a level 54 Warrior and in my younger years I quested for the crafted armor. Every piece required me to spend 100-350pp and because I was a warrior my Cha was not the best making it even more expensive for me. I did make a High Elf Enchanter with all points in Cha to bring down the price but talk about a hassle. I did the quests so I wouldnt have to spend all that money on the pieces but because of the price on jewels and then having to still go out and get the pieces it was almost not even worth it and in the time I could have probably made the money to buy full crafted. Well just responding to what you said.

Dude, the quests are supposed to be difficult quest wise and component wise. Not all the quests are even that difficult for the Ivy peices, but Verant also has to make sure that low lvl ppl don't do this quest that easily as well. Believe me I had my Ivy arms at lvl 12, its easy follow a higher lvl group and loot the items because most of the quest items, unless you want the item is useless to loot. But its another thing to have to part with 300pp for the components. At lvl 12 i'd be hard pressed to come up with the cash. And its a little difficult to have someone give it to you. Its part of Verant's way to balance the game.... And then there are those ppl with High lvl characters that just quest the armor for their low lvl twinks..... oh well, just my 2cp

Yes. You get experience for all of the class-specific armor quests, and quite a bit... If I can remember correctly... It as a loooong time ago... At 30, Hell #1, the greaves and the tunic each gave me about half a bubble of exp, which was quite a nice surprise at the time. I only remember that because I saved that log, for it was my very first "big" quest in EQ:)
Anyway... Good luck!

No, you do not get xp from all the class specific armor quests. I am a lvl 40 cleric on the Zeb server and have yet to get any xp for the cleric armor, just the armor is the reward.

One word to explain that my friend.

Twinking.
Example. I am level 25. I ask a lvl 35 to help me beat up stuff. He lets me loot everything. To top it off he gives me a nice weapon to beat up stuff. I just got twinked.

or Uber twinking.
Example. lvl 6 warrior has a bracer that has more AC than your entire suit of armr. His rings/earrings/necklace are more intelligent than your Wizzie. Fights only red con mobs and still win. Seems to have a lvl 50+ char AFK near him all the time. or even worse, the lvl50+ char is a druid or a shaman and can buff that young char to heck. Uber Twink.

/puzzle. This is the lazy way to everything. I wonder why anyone who gives their low level characters tons of pp to go to WC and buy all their armor even bothers playing the game. Where is the fun in doing that? Its like spending several hours a day at the flea market. The point of the game is to adventure and increase your power. When you play a game, do you buy the cheat book and follow the instructions to win? Why bother playing at all? Save your real money, cancel your account, and quit trying to steal my kills, because Im actually using my head and skills to approach a problem and not waiting for someone to sell me the answer.

Get a caster or a bard with an identify spell to help you. Hold the run in your hand (so the rune is on your cursor). Then have the identify spell cast. You will see something like the following on your screen. Rune of Ivy. Left side.

Does anybody else think that with how cool all the other armor out there looks (crafted, imbued, plate, Tizmak, Ry'Gorr etc) it just is yet another oversight to rangers that we can't have better looking armor? This stuff is called "ivy-etched" but what it looks like is green banded. Bleh!

Don't get me wrong; I love the AC & stats this stuff gives! (and if it wasn't for the stats I would stick to wearing my Ry'Gorr tunic) But one would think that Verant would improve the graphics on this. I think a green/gold ivy pattern on a brown background would just rock, and make Rangers look very cool to boot.

Ok let's compare...

Ivy Etched Tunic
AC19, wt6, STR+3, WIS+3, HP+30, magic

Ry'Gorr Battle Mail (tunic)
AC18, wt1, STR+10, MANA+20, SVPOI+5

Took both of my tunics to Mistmoore last night and wore them for about an hour apiece fighting the same lvl mobs (hill, ramp, canyon and the stuff than idiots trained out of the castle)

Thought that oh, the +7 more STR would make a difference on my hits (I have mastered dual weild and double attack). Just say no... almost no difference noticable; still doing max hits for mid-20's range, 23-26 dmg. However I died twice wearing the RG because I was down 1AC and 30HP less than the Ivy gives. There's been lots of time that having that extra 1AC/30HP has saved my hide and last night was just another example.

If I had stronger or heavier weapons (currently weilding icetooths and a crystal fiber) perhaps it would make a difference... in the meantime, in my opinion (and yours can differ!), the Ivy DOES make a difference for a ranger.

On the other hand, for a class like SK or warrior... the RG absolutely rocks, no doubt about it. It really depends on your class and how buffed you already are on your various stats. I'll be retesting these two pieces of armor in a different zone tonight and see if there's a difference in a place where some 50+ers don't keep yanking 33+ lvl trains on top of us.

Okay, took both these tunics to Permafrost and then Everfrost the other night. We hunted Redwind and his gang so our pair of rangers could get his ivy rune for a different ivy quest, then went up to EF to hunt the gobbie wiz to get the Heart of Ice for somebody else.

No deaths at Redwind... used each tunic for about half an hour of steady pulling, and saw almost no difference in HP.

Headed to EF... this zone is a real pain in the ashwood to clear your way into, to make it to where you can safely pull the wizard. A 40 druid friend helped our group (mid-20's) clear our way in. Problem with EF of course is the gobs; at 23, most of them to the spiked gate near wiz are green, but since they tend to train, they can gang up and do a lot of damage in a short time. Again, did not see any real difference in the damage I was dealing out.

Somebody told me that things like STR INT etc tend to have larger "pops"/"spikes" in increments of 25 (ie 100, 125) ... if I could find the equipment to get my char's STR the last couple points to 125, I might see a difference in the damage dealt wearing RG vs Ivy. Currently not seeing it though; only noticing I last longer in the Ivy due to higher AC/HP buffs on it. If anybody could shed light on this "25 mark," it would be greatly appreciated.

Additionally, I read somewhere that rangers cannot do critical hits on any weapons except their bows. If somebody could also confirm THAT, I would love to know. Thanks!

That is true; Rangers can only crit with bows.

Rangers are supposed to be the bow masters, and yet Warriors can crit with bows as well. Warriors do have to wait until post-50 to raise Archery skill above 200 (Rangers can go to 240 before level 50, which is the max for the skill), but they can catch up to Rangers post-50 easily. So what is there to distinguish Rangers as masters of the bow?

I don't understand Verant sometimes...

I was told by a guy who has run lots of different characters for the past two years that stats only matter in 5 point increments for your character.
so if you have a wis of 100 and add a item that kicks it up to 103, no difference....kick it up to 105 and it makes a differenece. Try setting up a character with that in mind.

I just want to point out to you that in your 20s.(in level) Str does not apply to your damage bonuse. It goes as follows.

1-20 since you have damage caps you really only do double the weapons base in damage. i.e. if you are using Morin's Short Sword which is 6 / 22 your max damage would be 12.

20+ since your cap has been removed you can now damage past 30 if you have a weapon that allows it. i.e. if you had an Axe of Iron Back which is 16 / 37? not positive on delay. You could do 32 damage max, if you notice using the weapon before lvl 20 you would do like 28 or 29 damage max... that's the damage cap.

30+ Str bonus kicks in.

That's prolly why you haven't seen any damage difference cause you are lvl 23.

Now *that* is one of the most useful posts I've seen in a while! Thanks, Anonymous! :-)

Been hunting the giants at the forts in Warsiliks Woods and Frontier Mtns, going from 25-30. Good experience (1/4 to full bulb, depending on # in group and lvl of giant) and again tested Ivy vs. RyGorr.

My conclusions... if I'm soloing and kiting, I like the Ivy. The extra WIS and extra HP give me a small edge over RG in being to outlast the mob, especially when the mob is whacking happily away on my head. (and when they provide a stun, a giant can easily dish out almost 200hp dmg before you can even move!)

On the other hand, if I am in a group, I'm liking the RyGorr more, because I am starting to see those 30+ damage notes (not including my damage from dd/dot spells) for my hits. A nice round of dual weild/double attack + kick can now do 125+ dmg easy (if I'm lucky), more if somebody in the group can alcrity/haste.

Hit lvl 30 last night. Hmm... so STR bonus kicks in now eh? Time to upgrade my arms and legs armor for some stuff with WIS/DEX buffs and see what damage I can get up to!

I have gotten pretty lucky here... I was wandering around LFay with my sister, a druid, to get 4 ghast hearts for the Tunare Initiate, and a high level druid had killed thistle, and the rune was just there, and she looted it. I was later getting micro servos for a trueshot (which I still don't have :-( ) when a 41 pally killed meldrath, and told me it was for a ranger quest. I then looted it and looked it up here, so all I need is the rubies, if I can have my sister turn in the rune, and then me complete it. Will this work? It certainly would make getting a nice Tunic pretty easy : )

Just make sure your sister gives the rune first,
then you hand the skull and the rubies (unstacked)and you should have a nice new tunic.

I just finished this quest, so here are the full details:

1) You need the rune of ivy off Thistle Underbrush. He is a brownie about level 25 and runs around Lesser Faydark.
2) You need the skull of Meldrath. Meldrath is a gnome necromancer about level 35, with a pet around level 25-27. He is deep in the minotaur caves in Steamfont, so be prepared to fight the Minotaur Guards and possibly the Minotaur Hero as well.
3) You need 2 rubies. These are NOT star rubies, but just plain rubies. I have heard that you can find them in Felwithe and Qeynos, but I got mine at Highkeep, from a female merchant at the top of the stairs that lead to the bank. They cost me about 130 pp each (with 106 charisma).

Talk to Gandari at the ranger guild in Kithicor forest (you can see the buildings from the road between Highpass and the commons). She will tell you which items you need (as above). Give them to her (make sure the rubies are NOT stacked). You will get an ivy etched tunic. :)

I am not sure whether or not it is necessary to talk to her first, but I think it is a good idea anyway and it doesn't hurt.

This is a good quest, one of the better ones for low- and mid-level rangers, in my opinion. I've done it repeatedly with fellow guild rangers.

Getting the Rune from Thistle is tough primarily because he's so DANG FAST!!! If you have SoW or Wolf Form, you can track him down as he zips around Lfay with occasional stops. If you don't, forget about doing the quest. It's hard to tell for sure, but it seems like the brownies are placeholders for Thistle. He is fast, but not very tough. The brownies are tougher. Three rangers in our high-20s were able to drag him down easily. I wouldn't recommend taking him on with less than that.

Meldrath is a different story. 2 of us, both around 30, wandered into the Mino caves to find him. He seems to be tougher than 35. He feared us both, then sent his pet out to fry us. Lessons learned, we got some mid-30s volunteers together and went back in and smoked him, repeatedly. Meldrath's room is actually a great camping spot, especially for Mino Lords and Heros, so it'll be popular with non-rangers as well.

My advice: use lots of overkill on Meldrath, because he really is nasty. Plus, you'll need it to fight your way past the Mino Guards. This part of the quest is tricky because those guards will shred your casters while Mel sends your tanks screaming down the hall. Be careful. The reward is well worth it, however!

I think I can speak for everyone on this topic. Please people when you know that someone has been camping for a long time, don't pester them about when they are going to leave. Don't sit down next to them to "wait" until they are done. You might be waiting a long time and then the time it takes for you to complete your camp on top of that. The NPC will always respawn and will always be there. Just ask them kindly if they will send you a tell when they are done and 9 times out of 10 they will. These players are tired from camping that long of a period and quite understandably a little grouchy and become extremely nervous at the thought of someone possibly stealing their kill. So, be courteous.

I was lucky when in LFD I came across Thistle fighting with the Ranger NPC who stands outside the ranger camp. The two boys took each other down to near death before Thistle was victorious. I simply then strolled over and hit him once or twice and he fell. Ivy cords and Rune of Ivy...like I said lucky.
As an alternative you may just hang about in LFD as quite often I hear people giving the LOC of the rune as it is no drop and of no value to them.
