The Altar Escort task takes 1 hour to complete. If you are high level, one person in your group can do all the escorting.
The person requesting this task must have completed Bypass Heimgul before you can enter Fergarin's room.
Put the sleeping draught into the cask of ale, quietly and without harm to the Wraithguard (Valdeholm)
Place the sleep draught that you were given into the open cask in the Wraithguard area. Don't be seen and please do not harm any of the Wraithguard while doing this.
You receive a Sleep Spore Draught.
Exit the dirt tunnel from Fergarin's room, and the "cask of ale" you are looking for is close to Wraithguard Heimgul on top of a barrel at (-1327, -1046). Leave the Sleep Spore Draught in your inventory and click the mug on top of the barrel.
Meet the pilgrims north of the broken spire on the top of the Icefall Glacier (Icefall Glacier)
Zone into Icefall Glacier and go around to the left a short distance to a cubbyhole in the north wall at (2260, -440, 663), which is north of the broken spire. When you reach that spot, not invis, a Krithgor ritesmaster will spawn there.
Speak with Krithgor ritesmaster (Icefall Glacier)
Hail a Krithgor ritesmaster, and 2x a Krithgor pilgrim will spawn beside him.
A Krithgor ritesmaster says, 'Come forth, my brothers.'
A Krithgor ritesmaster says, 'Hail, small one. I must tell you that we do not feel that we need your assistance from this point, but as you have done what was needed to get us out of the city then we shall trust you. We leave it up to you to tell us when to [move] and when to [wait].'

Notes on the ambushes: You cannot heal or buff the pilgrims. The ambushers fixate on the ritesmaster and damage him as he walks; the ritesmaster and his two fellow pilgrims do not fight back. You must gain aggro from the ambushers and kill them fast. If you decide to intercept the ambushers before they reach the pilgrims, avoid damaging them from outside of melee range because they will summon the ritesmaster instead of you. After you kill the ambushers, the ritesmaster's health will regenerate to full. Normal zone mobs do not attack the pilgrims, only the ambushers do. If anything goes wrong or a pilgrim gets killed, you get the message "One of the pilgrims you were asked to escort has died. You have failed your task. Your shared task, 'Altar Escort', has ended."
Assign a Krithgor ritesmaster to your extended targets window, and group mark him.
Say "move" to a Krithgor ritesmaster. (I never needed to use the "wait" command during this task.)
The three pilgrims begin walking south and very soon AMBUSHERS spawn from the east (just outside the orc fort gate), 2x a Coldeye raider and 2x a Coldeye war wolf, and rush to attack a Krithgor ritesmaster. Kill the ambushers.
You can invis after the ambush.
The pilgrims walk to the middle of the zone where the glacier meets the grassy tundra (-270, -417, 101) and stop. Say "move" to the ritesmaster to get him to continue.
The pilgrims walk down the glacier ramp to the grassy tundra (-435, -255, -12) and stop again. Say "move" to the ritesmaster to get him to continue.
The pilgrims walk southwest and cross the river bridge (-1260, 40, -46).
AMBUSHERS spawn from the west and rush to attack, 5x a Nightmoon marauder or possibly 2x a Shade of Zek. Kill the ambushers.
The pilgrims turn southeast toward the ruins. When they reach the ruins at (-1880, -525) this step updates.
The pilgrims should despawn soon afterward. If they don't, the mission could become bugged.
Meet the pilgrims on the switchback leading down into The Steppes. (The Steppes)
Zone into The Steppes and move east a short distance down the ramp to the first ramp switchback at (2130, -810, 293), and a Krithgor ritesmaster will spawn.
Speak with Krithgor ritesmaster (The Steppes)
Hail a Krithgor ritesmaster, and 2x a Krithgor pilgrim will spawn beside him.
Protect the pilgrims as they travel south. (The Steppes)
Assign a Krithgor ritesmaster to your extended targets window, and group mark him.
Say "move" to a Krithgor ritesmaster.
The pilgrims walk to the bottom of the switchback ramp, then move west. They swim through the lake by the waterfall, then turn south to walk along the mountain ridge.
AMBUSHERS spawn from the north crypt and rush to attack, 2x a Shade of Zek. Kill the ambushers.
The pilgrims continue walking southeast toward the altar on the island. When they reach the altar at (250, -925) this step updates.
Guard the pilgrims as they pray (The Steppes)
Very soon after the pilgrims reach the altar, AMBUSHERS spawn from the southwest and rush to attack, 2x a Shade of Zek. Kill the ambushers.
The pilgrims silently pray at the altar.
After about 5 minutes, a second group of AMBUSHERS spawns from the southwest and rushes to attack, 2x a Shade of Zek. Kill the ambushers.
After about 2 more minutes, a third group of AMBUSHERS spawns from the southwest and rushes to attack, 2x a Shade of Zek. Kill the ambushers.
After about 3 more minutes, this step updates.
Speak with Krithgor ritesmaster (The Steppes)
Hail a Krithgor ritesmaster.
Protect the pilgrims as they travel north. (The Steppes)
Say "move" to a Krithgor ritesmaster. The pilgrims walk back the way they came, northwest to the mountain ridge.
AMBUSHERS spawn from the north crypt and rush to attack, 2x a Shade of Zek. Kill the ambushers.
The pilgrims continue north along the ridge, then east across the lake, then up the switchback ramp toward the zoneline.
When the pilgrims reach the switchback ramp at (2130, -810, 293) this step updates and they despawn soon afterward.
Meet the pilgrims at the well in the ruins of Krithgor. (Icefall Glacier)
Zone back into Icefall Glacier, then head to the well in the southeast corner of the ruins at (-2230, -1085, 27) to update this step.
A Krithgor ritesmaster spawns by the eastern wall, east of the well, at (-2165, -1235).
Speak with Krithgor ritesmaster (Icefall Glacier)
Ambushers are coming! Go to where ritesmaster is standing and hail him.
Protect the pilgrims as they travel north (Icefall Glacier)
Say "move" to a Krithgor ritesmaster.
Whether or not you've hailed yet, or said "move" yet, AMBUSHERS spawn and rush to attack, 2x a Shade of Zek or possibly 4x Coldeyes. Kill the ambushers. This might be the last ambush.
The pilgrims walk northwest out of the ruins, back the way they came, across the river, then northeast to the glacier without stopping this time, then north toward Valdeholm.
When the pilgrims reach their original starting point at (2260, -440, 663) this step updates.
Speak with Fergarin Bardon I (Valdeholm)
Zone back into Valdeholm, return to Fergarin and hail him.
Your assistance in the pilgrimage was of undeniable importance. Without your help the giants would have surely been slain. Perhaps whatever god they have chosen to worship will someday offer a release from the curse for these giants.
