Find Warden Jakar on the second floor of Crescent Reach at location -1260, -1120, 43.

You say, 'Hail, Warden Jakar'

Warden Jakar says 'Vasha, stranger. I am Warden Jakar. I hope you find our homes to your liking. I must ask you to keep your weapons in their sheaths and your spells unspoken while in Crescent Reach. My people have too [many enemies] outside the city to wish for any inside it.'

You say, 'Many enemies?'

Warden Jakar says 'Well, I can not speak of this in great details, but a wise person will understand more than I can say. Most of our effort is spent keeping the wild animals and other dangerous locals. My duty extends beyond simple, obvious problems. It is my task to foresee danger from a greater distance. I must deal with [matters] much more difficult.'

You say, 'What matters?'

Warden Jakar says 'I can not discuss the most intimate details with a stranger, but if you wish to help I can certainly use the assistance. Perhaps you have a preference about which enemy you face? [Goblins] perhaps? Or [gnolls]? Or if you are braver and more skilled, perhaps you will kill some [kobolds] or [orcs] for us. I can only ask the most powerful strangers to battle with the northern [giants], are you one of those? If not, that is fine. Please enjoy the safety of the city while you are here.'

You say, 'What gnolls?'

Warden Jakar says 'The Gnolls of the Steppes are cunning and dangerous. I believe that they are responsible for an [alliance] between their tribes and those of the goblins. In the last few years both the goblins and the gnolls have grown more numerous. If there is no alliance between the two, there at least has been a cessation of fighting between them. This has strengthened by both of those tribes and they might soon become a problem for Crescent Reach. You would be doing our small city a service if you could reduce the number of gnolls wondering the Steppes. If you have some friends to help however, there may be a greater task you could [help] us with.'

You say, 'I will help'

Warden Jakar says 'Amongst the gnolls the basic fighters are easy enough to deal with. It is their elite soldiers that support those fighters that make the battles difficult. We need someone to attack the gnolls and slay several of these elite soldiers. Without them the morale of the gnolls will falter and should make them easy prey for our soldiers.'

You have been assigned the task 'Sweeping the Steppes: Gnolls'

Warden Jakar would like you to raid the gnoll encampments and slay as many gnolls as you can. It is likely the gnolls will send their elite tropps after you for doing so, but if you can slay them it will deal a severe blow to the gnoll forces.

Slay as many gnolls as possible in the encampments 0/20 The Steppes

Kill the gnoll defenders 0/4 The Steppes

Kill the elite gnoll forces 0/3 The Steppes

After killing 5 normal gnolls, 2 gnoll defenders spawn and attack.

After killing 10 normal gnolls, 2 gnoll defenders spawn and attack.

After killing 20 normal gnolls, 3 elite gnolls spawn and attack.

The defenders and elites spawn at the corpse of the gnoll you kill. They are all mezzable and snareable.

Return to Warden Jakar 0/1 Crescent Reach

Did this last night with my box team (Nec-Mag-Enc) on Test. The Gnoll Defenders or Elites do not spawn at the corpse of the 5th, 10th and 20th regular gnoll. All three times they spawned right on top of my casters, rather than the pets and mercs that were doing the fighting a short distance away. They seem to be set to spawn next to players with aggro. The final set of 3 Elites was insta-death for my mage, but the enchanter (who didn't any aggro) was ignored.

Did this solo 68 berserker with a healer mercenary. When the first set of defenders popped I handled the two defemders and the gnoll I was fighting at the moment by throwing all my disciplines at them plus the merc had full mana. When the second set popped I didnt have the disciplines available and the merc was lower on mana. I killed one defender zoned back into Mesa and waited a few seconds zoned back in and found the last defender waiting just past the elemental area. Killed him easily. Did the same thing when the elites popped. I killed one elite then had to zone, back in for another elite, zoned and came back for the final one.

Final step:
Return to Warden Jakar with news of your victory - 0/1 - Crescent Reach

a tribal defender 65-66
a Darkfell elite 67+

All dropped Darkfell Fang, Gnoll Teeth, Vial of Gnoll Blood.
defenders dropped a small brick of unrefined ored.
elites dropped Fresh Muscimol and Tungsten Ore.

Edited, Aug 5th 2010 7:40am by Yther Any gnolls in the zone seem to work. I tried various levels of non-named ones, all counted.

54 can be taskadded, maybe lower, but was lowest toon I had available to try.

Did this with my Bard the other day and here was my strat...

Killed my first 5 Gnolls and the 2 Tribal Defenders popped basically right on top of me. I was beat down to 41% health (6.5K HPs no buffs) and managed to escape and kite them down. I was far enough away from the corspe I thought to avoid melee, but I think at least one will pop on or close to you. SO.....

I then loaded up my invuln song and kept cacaphony and pet AAs open. Chanted the gnolls down again and when the last Gnoll was around 6% I hit both AAs and then sang my invuln song. Walla. I was able to get far enough away from them without taking damage to start kiting them. (Fade will work also)

Then I killed enough Gnolls to get the Elites to pop using the same defensive strat above to not get smacked around when they do arrive. That part worked fine, but....
A few seconds into kiting those 3 around one started to cast on me. I got hit for around 700 dmg and thought Uh Oh. I then hit my Bard resist disc AND my Vet reward resist. From there on out I resisted everything he threw at me except dispell. I was still able to get selos running again without them catching up to me.

After the first one dropped I don't remember the second or third elite casting, but just be prepared. They all have the same name so you don't know which will cast.

Other than that this is pretty easy and took me around 1-1.5 hours to complete.

Going to go back and get the other weapon tomorrow.

After the 5th gnoll, 2 defenders pop instantly. Be careful because they choice of targets to attack is odd. After 10 gnolls, the same thing happens (2 defenders pop).

After the 20th gnoll, all 3 elites pop.

Myself a 75 ranger, a BST boxing a cleric and a druid boxing a shaman actually failed on the final 3 pop of elites due to instadeath of the cleric and resistance to Root. With a chanter the encounter would be trivial.

None of the MoBs summon - another strat might be to Succor immediately when the adds pop and run back and pull them single. But I'm not sure if they will despawn quickly or not.
