In the Fish Ale pub in South Qeynos there is a man named Micc Koter standing at the bar. His companion (whose name I forget) will occasionally mumble about someone "foolish going after the Paw of Opolla". When you ask the companion about it, he tells you to mind your own business, but Micc will tell him to behave. Ask Micc about the Paw of Opolla and he will tell you it is a magical item and it belongs to "some gnoll bitch". He will offer to tell you where to find it if you buy him a brandy. I had to buy 2 to get him to talk. He then says that someone calling himself Caninel went to find it in the Plains of Karana.

Caninel is located in West Karana, along with two named gnolls, along the mountains near the border with North Karana. When you talk to Caninel, he will demand 3 gems (a Moonstone, a Bloodstone, and a Star Rose Quartz) before telling you about the Paw of Opolla. He will then tell you about how when the humans from Everfrost first met the Blackburrow Gnolls, the Shaman Opolla greeted them warmly and had her hand cut off by Gynok Moltor. She placed a curse upon the Moltor descendants, the last of which can be found in under Qeynos. He tells you to ask him about the paw and also about the rings on the paw.

When you find him (Vin Moltor), he will demand 3 Bottle of Kalish and a Rat Ear Pie for the paw. He will deny any knowledge of the rings and say that his father probably sold them, mentioning his father's travels in Odus. You can get the pie through a quest in Qeynos Hills, or you can kill him to get the Severed Paw. This is not the actual item, since it seems it is the rings that activate its magic.

There are four rings that need to be put in the paw container and combined to get the true paw: Platinum Ring, Gold Ring, Silver Ring and Copper Ring. Look for rings with a XXX: +1 CHA: -1 stat.

All four rings are known to drop from a mummy named Gynok Moltor in Befallen.

The Copper, Silver, and Gold Rings can be obtained through the Shiny Rings quest in Toxxulia Forest which involves camping a fungus mutant in Upper Guk.

The Silver Ring also appears in the lake in Blackburrow.

Need all dialogues, /loc of quest mobs, missing quest items, faction hits if any, any other missing information.

Why you should do the Paw quest =)

One thing that people need to understand is that the Paw of Opalla is not meant to be something that is easily obtainable. I don't know if you have looked at the stats yet, but for clerics it is the best primary slot item in the game from level 1 to 60! (Barring Velious drops I don't know about) Now, you have got to ask yourself, 'If I was Verant, would I want to make an item like that VERY easy to get so that someone would be able to get one every 15 minutes so everyone and their momma has one and there is no sense of pride and accomplishment for those that earned it?' I for one am proud I took the time to earn this item and stood the test of patience that it took to camp it. I feel a chip on my shoulder when people say 'Hey, you've got the Paw of Opalla!'. And I don't know what crazy server you guys are on, but on Bristlebane, a Paw runs 7-10k, which is a little too much money for someone to pay that is doing this quest within level-range of the MoBs. This quest stops giving experience around 30, so yeah it is going to be even MORE boring for people levels 40-50 that are doing this a little late in their career. YES the spawn times are long and the drops rare, but bring along a friend and camp him somewhere else in Guk (Shin Knight, Shin Lord, Warden, etc.) and dominate multiple camps. Help power-level some newbies in Befallen. Do whatever it takes to keep yourself entertained besides get on this board and start ******** so it deterrs others from doing it. There is a reason Verant made this item hard to get, and if you looked at it from that logicial stand-point, instead of 'Did you just see what God did to us?!?!', I think you will start to understand why they did it this way.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 29 2001 at 11:00 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) the Cone of mystics is a better for primary slot.

There are lots of things in EQ I wish were no drop!! The twinking on Bertox is getting outrageous. I understand some minor twinking in the beginning to get past the first few very boring levels but beyond that I say work for it, don't buy it. I think Verant is moving more toward lore no drop to help out on the twinking and farming but it's still pretty bad.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 13 2001 at 7:40 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Point taken. And I partially agree.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 10 2001 at 10:34 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Indeed, I have started the Paw quest. When people see me, their first reaction is "TWINK!" but that is not the case. I have NO other characters, my level 20 druid (Misata Katsuragi) is the ONLY character I have. Now, people should instead say "VERY LUCKY!" Because there have been influences that helped me get where I am. One of course being a generous (can't stress that enuf!) Barbarian who first paid me 60pp to heal and SoW him in SK, then 50pp the next 3times, and then I hit level 19 and he gave me 1.2kpp! So I walk around wearing a Brown Chitin Protector, Plat Ruby Veil, and some Mammoth Hide Leggings I bought with the money. Then my guildleader and friend (Taomut) gave me my Zaharn's Coronet when he got his Runed Circlet. And my Runed Falchion came from SoWing and healing a Wizard (Primuuss) who was kiting the Den Ironblend camp in Butcher Block, and letting me loot the weapons and sell em (took a LONG time, but I got the 1.5kpp I bought it for (the ONLY falchion I seen someone had that week!, so I bought it even though I over paid a bit))
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 15 2001 at 8:15 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Umm.. you are a TWINK you TWIT ! When you don't hunt/kill/loot/earn your own money the items you have in your inventory are TWINKED ! DUH !. the lenght some people will go to trying to justify being TWINKED !
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 01 2001 at 5:34 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) And you deduced that by only the text of his reply? WOW, that is truly amazing....I'm really impressed.

Before you begin this quest, be sure you know what's in store for you.
It is unlikely you will have to camp for less than 10 hours. It undeniably happens to some very
lucky individuals, but unless you are one of that 5%, it's very unlikely.
It is not unlikely that you will have to camp for over 20 hours. Happened to me. Happened to several others. Fungus mutant is one slow, boring camp (took me 9 hours), but you're only fooling yourself if you think you've overcome the worst part once done with this, like I did.
Gynok Moltar can spawn in 30 minutes if you're really really lucky. Unnaturally lucky. Superhumanly lucky.
If you're not, it might very well take a good 5 hours before you even see one of his placeholders. And once you do, it might still easily take another 15 hours before you catch a glimpse of Gynok himself. And when you kill him, you might be so unfortunate that he doesn't drop the platinum ring, which is by far the rarest in my opinion.

My advice, steer clear of this quest, it is the worst one I have ever done. Investing 4k in buying a paw of opolla is 10 times better than doing the quest for yourself. Unless you are one out of a hundred.

Gynok shows up almost to the dot, every 8 hours. As the time for him to apper draws closer, his place holders appear closer and closer together. I DON'T KNOW if he drops the ring ea time or not. The only info I had first hand was from a liar who claimed he got the gold ring from him (i now know he did not). But I camped him for 8 hours, only to have him take me within 2-3 hp's of my life and i had to run. Going back though. On my server, i can buy the rings (assumning I hve 1K for each), but it's not worth it to me to buy it. I want to really EARN it! I knokw some will not agree with that, and that's fine i guess. I just wish we could decommercialize some of the items so they MEANT something once again, instead of being just another toy in the hand of a 3rd level twink. GRRR.

Generally the Plat ring seems to be the most difficult camp by far, due to it's rarity and the rarity of the spawn. I would suggest either asking around the Befallen/WC region to see if you can buy one now and again (bring at least 1kpp), or powerlevel some newbie friends in the befallen entrance area for a few days.

The gold ring can be a bit of a pain in terms of camp time, but not unusually so for an item of this level, the rest is very simple - well worth the investment given the Paw's stats I should thing.

Ok hang on a sec , the deal with Gynok is , he or his placeholder spawns every 16-17 minutes right at the befallen entrance . Placeholders are ghoul , skel , or rat , and of course yes , Gynok is a very rare spawn . Make sure you kill the placeholder when he spawns or else they wander down to the 3rd lvl . I don't know what the guy is talking about when he says you will be lucky to see his placeholder in 5 hours , or whatver he said , but thats not the case . It's every 16-17 minutes like clockwork . I decided on a whim to do this quest and got very lucky , Gynok spawned on the 3rd pop . Then to the fungus mutant and the degenerated guk weed ( rare drop , for the gold ring ) dropped on the 2nd pop . Like I said very lucky . On karana server this items seems to sell for around 5k . Bottom line , if your looking to do something solo , bored with the same ol' kill , kill , kill with groups , give this quest a try .
This quest is not worth the trouble

I am, as I write this post, in the middle of doing
the quest for the Paw of Opolla.
I prepared for this camp by reading what info I could find on it on various sites, including this.
So I was prepared for a lot of camping.
But this is totally outrageous!
The first thing I did was to go down to Blackburrow and get the silver ring, from the bottom of the razorgill lake. Easy enough, cammoed and swam down, and there it was. Looked like a pouch (very original, Verant) just lying there.
Then I went to upper Guk in which I had never been before, but thanks to eqatlas.com's maps I found the camping spot quite fast. So I started camping the mutant fungus. After nearly three hours I had not gotten anything but coins and a few words off of him, no Mildew, no Spores, and more importantly, no Weed.
I finally got a Mildew, and did so for three consequent kills (!). Doesn't help much to get more than one though, lore and no drop.
Then after 2 more hours I got spores which I didn't really need as I already had the silver ring. Oh well I thought, weed will probably come within a few kills. So I keep camping him, hour after hour. After a total of 8 and a half hour I had still not gotten any weed, but due to great moral support from the rest of the people in the zone I managed to stay put for another half hour. This is a VERY boring camp and after 9 hours I said to myself 1 more kill, if I don't get the weed by then I give up on this quest. Fate it seems, is not without a sense of irony (hehe) and I got the weed on my last kill before I would have given up.
Great I think, now I'm over the worst part.
Boy was I wrong. The next day I camp the entrance of Befallen for 3 hours, no zombie.
That was yesterday.
Today I've been sitting here for a total of 8 hours so far and I've not even come close to seeing Gynok yet. It's extremely tedious and boring. I expect (or hope) to get the ring within a few more hours before I have to go, there is a real life outside of everquest eventhough Verant doesn't want us to have one.
And when Gynok finally drops his platinum ring for me, I'll end up camping for Vin in Qeynos aqueducts for sure.. Probably for several hours..
Then I'll go to Kerra Ridge, find the merchant and give him the midew and weed and put all the 4 rings in my paw and hit combine. With my luck it will go wrong. Or I will finally have my well deserved Paw.
I'm having extreme doubts as to if it's worth the trouble already long before being finished with the quest, which kind of speaks for it self.
Since I'm level 45 I have not experienced any danger in doing this quest, but you would not have to be many levels lower to experience trouble with holding the fungus camp, which is a very annoying camp to say the least.

And to think the paw only sells for 4k after all the trouble you have to go through to get it...
I haven't words.

To sum up a bit, here's what you need

Mutant fungus: Guk Bracket Mildew (supposedly common)
Faerix Spores (supposedly common)
Degenerated Guk Weed (rare)
Spawn time is somewhere between 16 and 18 minutes, estimated camp time: anywhere between 3 and 10 hours

Gynok: Platinum ring (supposedly common)
Spawn time with ph is 30 minutes (15 each), but ph rarely spawns and Gynok himself spawns even more rarely. Estimated camp time: anywhere between 1 and 20 hours

Vin: Severed paw (?)
Spawn time not known yet, supposed to be somewhere between 30 minutes and 3 hours

Blackburrow water pit: Silver ring
Spawn time is supposed to be 3 hours if the ring is snatched

Find merchant with different faction in kerra ridge, give mildew and weed, get rings. put all 4 rings in severed paw and hit combine, voila, paw of opolla and a week less to live.

Do yourselves a favor and invest 4 k instead.
Speed it up a bit ....

DONT (I repeat) DONT camp VIN molotor for the container. When he spawns he just stands there - he is rarely killed and will often be there for days.

Just bind yourself next to his spawn spot and check back occasionally. Get on with the rest of the camps.

Gynoks PH does spawns 16 min after you kill the previous PH- if you dont kill it - it will wander down into the dungeon and take more time to spawn

Good luck to you all
# Dec 28 2000 at 7:59 PM Rating: Decent
I spent 17 and a half hours (11 one time then 6 and a half the next morning after 5 hours of sleep) camping Gynok and he never once spawned. I kept a log and killed a PH ever 15 - 16 mins from the ent spawn point. I was lucky enough to have a guildmate give me an extra Plat ring that he had gotten when he was hunting in Befallen so I didn't have to finish that camp. I am lvl 30 and there was no way to camp The Mutant by myself. I could handle it fine with a 28 Pally with me to assist in keeping the room clean. Mostly when it is time to fight the Mutant it is nice to have someone else take the Clockwork poison spell for you ( I think if you have a 50+ poison resist you may be able to take him with no problem because you will resist most of the spell attemps). I was lucky enought to get the weed after only 5 hours. I got the other item on the first kill when I moved in. I would suggest to anyone just starting out on this to have friends to help you, like a guild or such, and plenty of time. A little bribe you can use when camping the Mutant is that the other mobs around there drop an item blacksmiths use for a red dye. My Pally friend made a TON off of the armor he made when he added the dye to it. A lot more than he normally would get. So use this to help bribe a blacksmith friend to help you. Feel free to send me an email (TNeusch@yahoo.com) if you would like a few more pointers/hints or if you have a question. Oh one last thing have evoc memed if you try to take the Mutant on with a friend. A few times the target got away and pulled a few too many friends that we couldn't handle and evoc saved us many times.

-Edit on April 26,2001-
I went to the Mutant again but only to kill the Fungus guys around him for the Dying agent. Again within less than 3 hours I had both items for the rings again. I am not sure why some people call this the "Longer camp." I have since made alts and taken them to Befallen jsut to camp the Gynok spawn point and get exp in the mean time. Had my druid camped there to log in when he would spawn. After another 15 hour session he didnt spawn once. Guess I have all the luck with the Mutant and none with Gynok.

has the copper ring for the paw quest been changed to the common drop for Gynok. He finally spawned after i have been camping him on and off for ... well, for a long time. He dropped the copper ring :( I was just wanting to know if they changed his common drop to copper ring

No, that has always been a chance you had to take with him.

Also, the Gold Ring is a rare drop off Gynok.

I just got gold off him yesterday, and Platinum off him today!

So now, am the only person who needs to camp the copper ring last :p

if you enter by the secret entrance outside of qeynos, he spawns in the room just to the right of that entrance. he walks around the aqueducts from there but doesn't go far. this is also the lower level part of the zone so if you get killed by something in there, you've gone too far. i found him yesterday and killed him at 24. i was too lazy to do the pie quest =)

Usually you cannot help but encounter Moltor Vin jogging around the sewers, generally in the area near the secret entrance just outside the qeynos city gate. He is nearly always there in my experience - and I've been in those sewers a LOT.

I don't know what his respawn time is when he is killed, but I suspect it is fairly rapid, given as he is almost always present.

I've just spent 4 hours running around, at times, in the area that the detailed map of the aquaducts (that we all know and love) shows as his stomping grounds. At other times, I just sat there at the entrance, as some posts have suggested, waiting for him to spawn. I'm re-perusing all the posts to see if there's something I missed. One of the posts said that Vin turns into a begger soon after spawning???? Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Gynok spawns at the entrance to befallen. (befallen is in west commons) However to get Gynok to spawn you must kill his place holders who also spawn at the entrance. You may have to kill placeholders for several hours in real time. (it took me 5 hours) When Gynok spawns he looks like a mummy and hits hard and fast. I recommend that you use your fastest root(if you are a caster)then use your longest lasting root because he hits very hard for his lvl (45 on average) and hits very fast. Then you can nuke or dot it doesnt matter.(I would use dot so root doesn't break) Gynok is green to me at lvl 30 but is harder then what he cons. By the way to anyone who doesn't know the severed paw goes in a slot same way a backpack does.

A level 31 Druid should be able to Kill Gynoch with no problems.... Just root him dot him, and then blast him... not that hard with your 29th level dots on him.
But then as a cleric I am used to rooting things and having it stick better than your root does (but still having to Re-cast it frequently) heheh.

Good luck.. The easy part is killing him. The HARD part is GETTIN HIM at all.....

i feel pretty lucky...went to guk and got weed on 2nd kill...a total of 3 min invested. That is cause i went there and killed, then logged immediately, then decided to come back after 30 min and killed, then i got it. So then i decided to wait for the copper while my friend waited for gold. After 12 kills we got another gold...it ended up taking me about 4 more hours to get copper, but im not complaining.
My quest for the Paw...
# Oct 29 2000 at 5:57 AM Rating: Good
I was somewhat concerned with the time it was going to take to complete this quest. Since I have heard it can take weeks to months.... I must have the luck of my gods on me though. I decided after a grueling camp of Dyllian for the ToV quest, that I might as well do the Paw of Opolla. I had heard may stories on it, and of course the cost of obtaining one.

I started off around midnight, decided to just camp the Fungas Mutant in Upper Guk, after about an hour he dropped the Bracket Mildew, a few kills later yeilded nothing. Calling it a night, I camped. I logged again in the afternoon, around 11am. Heading straight for the container,( I had bound myself by the Qeynos side entrance) luck was on me, as I zoned in, there Vin Moltar ran by me. I almost didn't catch him it was such a shock. I had planned on a 6 hour watch for him. A snare and a few nukes later I had the container.(I guess I cheated since I killed him and didn't give him the food and drink he wanted, but I was already KOS to the corrupt guards, and one faction hit didn't bother me.) Surprised, I headed to BlackBurrow, I camo'd myself, endure breath, and headed to the razor gill pond, finding the silver ring with out any difficulty towards the deepest end of the pond. This all maybe took me 15-20 min. Pressing my luck further I went to Befallen. (As a druid, teleporting is such a treasured ability) Luck was with me again, as a solo cleric was camping the Mummy Gynok, but he had already been there for almost 5 hours. I bound myself there, and asked the kind sir if he would send tell when the spawn would be open. With a smile he nodded. About an hour later he got the platinum ring I wanted.(I was wandering around untill he killed the Mummy, and helped a newbie from Erudin to Qeynos via boat.)As promised he sent the good news and I gated back to Befallen and took camp. This was the longest processes, waiting a total of 5 hours, Gynok, finally spawned, 2 1/2 nukes later with Firestrike (286 dd) the plat ring was mine. (His placeholders spawn at 16 min intervals. I did lose one PH that ran behind the locked door, however as timed, another spawned with out any delay.) I was somewhat tired staring at my computer, so I decided to go to Kerra island for the bronze ring. Easily found Melixis near the Temple in a hut, asked the questions, gave the mildew and was rewarded my ring. I logged afterwards.

Today I returned to Guk, LUCKY the persons camping it were just leaving! Camped the Fungas Mutant for 7 spawns (16 min a spawn) and couldn't beleive I got the Degenerated Guk Weed! A quick port to Tox, run to Kerra island and I had my paw. ;)

Many thanks to the information provided here at Allakhazam, and to the many helpful players through-out the TRIBUNAL for assisting me in my questions, and overall kindness and generosity.

Good hunting all,

Gynoch has Dropped 3 of the 4 rings for me. His common is supposed to be the copper, uncommon is the Gold, and RARE is the Plat ring. I have heard he is the ONLY one to drop the Plat ring. He is a rare spawn, and his place holders are the only moving objects in the zone. His PH can be a rat, skel or other junk, and will move. If you hear "xyz" Shouts "You have disturbed my rest..." then you know that is the PH. I have had the best luck just bringing in lowbies and Power Level them on top floor. The PH will despawn eventually, and then respawn up top (near entrance), and if you have lowbies killing ALL spawns by entrance Gynoch will spawn. He is a level 20+ Named mummy, and has about 700ish HP. He is not that hard to kill (started killing him in my 20s) but I have been told that he will only spawn once in 12 hours. He has dropped NO rings for me before as well so have fun.

I was GIVEN -) the Paw container, so now all I need to do is get that silver Ring (most difficult part for a DE). It is compounded for me because on Tallon Zek BB is a lightie zone, so we have issues with gettin near it, let alone inside.

I was also surprised to see some people posting that you need to compine the rings and then turn the results in to someone. I was under the impression that the combination will produce the Paw itself.

In any event I must GIGGLE very LOUDLY at the posts and posters stating times of less than 40 hours for this quest. I did not ever camp Gynoch as such. I mostly just ran into him while in Befallen for other reasons (usually when doin the Thex Mallet repeatedly in my 20s) It is a matter of luck to find him, and I am now close after working on this quest for over 15 levels. I never bothered to really as such CAMP this because I have at other times seen people who claimed they had been camping Gynoch for days with no luck, or with wrong ring drops.

Good Luck, you WILL need it with this quest.

I got gold, copper, and silver fairly easy at level 30 with only a few deaths. So i have the paw and the 3 rings and everyone says oh man you got it, the plat ring is the easiest one. Well i've camped Gynok for over 24 hours and seen him once, and that one time the only thing he dropped was the copper ring, no plat ring! I've camped him for over 10 hours straight and nothing. Sure this camp is easy but is boring as hell! If you have all rings except this one i suggest go camp something to sell and buy the stupid ring.

After a week of camping in Befallen, I now have the Paw. Would I do it again? H____ no! Off and on from getting the container to getting all four rings, there was about a month of work involved. I'm not talking everyday, but when I felt like camping for one of the rings to trying to make the rat meat pie, it took me a month. Good luck in your endeavors and it's very nice having it, but a very long quest. Don't plan on doing this in one weekend.

Please people when you know that someone has been camping for 8+ hours, don't pester them about when they are going to leave. Don't sit down next to them to "wait," until they are done. You might be waiting a long time and then the time it takes for you to complete your camp on top of that. The character will always respawn and will always be there. Just ask them kindly if they will send you a tell when they are done and 9 times out of 10 they will. These characters are tired from camping that long of a period and quite understandably a little grouchy and become extremely nervous at the tought of someone possibly stealing their kill.
KOS in Qeynos?
# Oct 12 2000 at 1:57 PM Rating: Default
When I started the Paw of Opolla quest, I found out I was kos in Qeynos. So for an entire day (probably doesn't take that long) I killed gnolls in Blackburrow and then went invisible into Qeynos and turned their teeth in for faction adjustments.
Rat Meat Pie-Forget It!
# Oct 12 2000 at 1:31 PM Rating: Default
Forget this! I spent 3 days killing rats and trying to make this horrible pie. I logged on one morning and finally I made it and about 2 min. later, my character ate it! Make sure you have plenty of food before you make this pie because your character WILL eat it. So, I went to work again trying to make another and finally gave up after another whole day of trying and never got the pie again. Was so mad, I immediately went down and killed Vin. (Had to have something to take my frustations out on.) Got the container and went merrily on my way.

Yanno, that sounds like something that would happen to me! Sorry for laughing so hard. But I know I'd probably eat the damn pie too by mistake or one of the weeds, then get some sickness from it.

# Oct 16 2000 at 2:55 AM Rating: Default
I agree, by the time you are of sufficient level to kill Gynok, Vin is an easy kill. If you've spent any time at all around Qeynos, you've probably killed enough gnolls to give you very good faction in Qeynos, personally, I am kindly there, and the faction hit I took from killing Vin did not change that................or you can spend your free time killing rats and running around making the stupid pie.
#Anonymous, Posted: Nov 06 2000 at 12:00 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) qeynos is a crappy town anyway, i am probably kos there by now!

LOL, getting the giant rat ears is incredibly easy. I killed a giant rat in Befallen and it had 2 ears on it the first time. Just pick up the ears there, it should be incredibly easy to do.
RE: Rat Meat Pie-Forget It!
# Feb 09 2001 at 3:03 PM Rating: Default
Yes, getting the ears is easy, however making the pie is not. It is still not trivial with a skill of 145 so the person above who actually was able to make one was VERY lucky!

What slot does the paw fit in?
Which Slot??
# Oct 12 2000 at 2:30 PM Rating: Default
I believe that it goes into either melee slot. )Please correct me if I'm wrong). I know that a lot of high level Druids don't even carry a weapon after 40. They have the Testament of Vanear in one weapon slot and the Paw of Opolla in the other weapon slot or melee slot.
RE: Which Slot??
# Dec 15 2000 at 11:07 PM Rating: Default
well, after level 40 I'd hope they'd have a better weapon than the paw of opolla and test. of Vanear.....more like the PKT (pearl Kedge Totem) and so on.....around lvl 40 you should at least have 200 wis and you aren't going to reach it with out better equip than paw of opolla ;p Also u'r right the paw goes in either hand
please help me!!!!!!
