In the Fish Ale pub in South Qeynos there is a man named Micc Koter standing at the bar. His companion (whose name I forget) will occasionally mumble about someone "foolish going after the Paw of Opolla". When you ask the companion about it, he tells you to mind your own business, but Micc will tell him to behave. Ask Micc about the Paw of Opolla and he will tell you it is a magical item and it belongs to "some gnoll bitch". He will offer to tell you where to find it if you buy him a brandy. I had to buy 2 to get him to talk. He then says that someone calling himself Caninel went to find it in the Plains of Karana.

Caninel is located in West Karana, along with two named gnolls, along the mountains near the border with North Karana. When you talk to Caninel, he will demand 3 gems (a Moonstone, a Bloodstone, and a Star Rose Quartz) before telling you about the Paw of Opolla. He will then tell you about how when the humans from Everfrost first met the Blackburrow Gnolls, the Shaman Opolla greeted them warmly and had her hand cut off by Gynok Moltor. She placed a curse upon the Moltor descendants, the last of which can be found in under Qeynos. He tells you to ask him about the paw and also about the rings on the paw.

When you find him (Vin Moltor), he will demand 3 Bottle of Kalish and a Rat Ear Pie for the paw. He will deny any knowledge of the rings and say that his father probably sold them, mentioning his father's travels in Odus. You can get the pie through a quest in Qeynos Hills, or you can kill him to get the Severed Paw. This is not the actual item, since it seems it is the rings that activate its magic.

There are four rings that need to be put in the paw container and combined to get the true paw: Platinum Ring, Gold Ring, Silver Ring and Copper Ring. Look for rings with a XXX: +1 CHA: -1 stat.

All four rings are known to drop from a mummy named Gynok Moltor in Befallen.

The Copper, Silver, and Gold Rings can be obtained through the Shiny Rings quest in Toxxulia Forest which involves camping a fungus mutant in Upper Guk.

The Silver Ring also appears in the lake in Blackburrow.

Need all dialogues, /loc of quest mobs, missing quest items, faction hits if any, any other missing information.

I swear this is the most boring thing i have donee in eq yet, granted it is an AWESOME item but seriously this stupid mob NEVER pops, i've already camped him for 15 hours straight with no luck, even making sure to kill all his ph's, i'm going rather insane down here and i what ticks me off the most is that the moment i get off for that thing called SLEEP some lucky TWINKED newbie will walk in and he'll just pop, ofcourse the twink=ies will make short work of him and then all those long boring hours are for nothing, i thing they should at least give him a se spawn timer none of this random stuff what do you all think

Re: Rings from merchants

Just a quick little addendum to the post about buying the rings from the merchant: The rings have to have a +1 attribute (depending on ring type) and a -1 cha attribute. Most of the rings being sold to the vendors are just normal, non-quest rings.

What I really plan to do...
# Apr 12 2001 at 6:39 AM Rating: Default
Okay, I play a 30 Cleric. My wis is currently 157. I know, that's low for my level, but when I made him I foolishly dumped half my points into STR, and I'm a dorf too, so I didn't need that!!! =\
Anyway, I REALLY want a paw, but can barely stand camping stuff. I nearly cracked doing the Testament of Vanaer, waiting for six hours camping that Starshine dude.
Anyway, this is how I see it:
I could either quest for the paw, endure the boredom, and spend possibly dozens of hours camping rare spawns, rare drops, etc. to get my paw, or...
I could continue playing, leveling, grouping, etc. Look at it this way...on my server (Brell) the cost of a paw is dropping like a rock. In the last couple months it's gone from nearly 5K to 3.5-4K, depending. And through all these many hours camping, I could be out there grouping, having fun, winning rolls on FBSSes. =P (It's true, you know. The people who would put the item to its best use NEVER win the rolls) And if I start winning rolls on multi-K items and such, I can just go buy myself a paw. =P

Notes about Vin Molter; He moves like he is SoWed. His pathing takes him to the exit with the gold sign that says `Quenos Aquaducts'. He con'd blue to a lvl 30. He also changed into `a begger' right after I finished giving him the 3 bottles of Kalish and then the rat ear pie. So hail him fast!! =)

Good Hunting!

#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 06 2001 at 6:44 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Folks, there are alot of people out there who have lives and don't spend every moment that they aren't on EQ researching it like us. As a result, I've seen many of these rings for sale with merchants - never really thought they were worth it at the time, but now...
What level is Vin Moltar?
# Apr 06 2001 at 5:57 PM Rating: Default
As an evil character, I really don't give a flying foxtrot whether or not I'm liked by the "good races" (the good races are actually the most intollerant people I've ever seen - they're worse than liberals - can't do nothing to make them like you) so what level is he - I'm just gonna kill him and take the stupid bag or whatever he gives for the rat ear pie.
I am a Very, very, VERY stupid newbie :(

I've read that you must identify the rings to do this quest. I've already gotten the ring from the pond in Blackburrow (no-brainer) and when i right-click and hold, its stats show (-1 Cha, +1 Wis). So - do you have to 'identify' them, or was that changed by a patch? And more importantly (for me at least) What the heck / How the heck do you identify things? What is identifiable? Is it a spell, potion, what are the uses of 'identify'? I have a feeling it's got something to do with enchanters, and in 3 more levels when i plan on camping the named zombie in Befallen i DON'T want to just hand over my hard-earned ring (assuming i even get it) to some unknown 'chanter to identify it.... Please, laugh at my idiocy if you want, but answer my question Please!

The identify spells works in a strange way. You can hold the object with your cursor and have the caster with the identify spell target you and cast the spell. It will be indentified for you. You don't have to give it to them.

Remember my friend, the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask.

Yes, some of the int caster classes can cast ID - don't know which ones and at what levels, but I'd recomend hitting the class discussion boards - they'll be happy to tell you.

Haven't gotten my paws on one yet, but if the one you found told you what it was, then it sounds safe to assume that you don't need to ID the others. If you kill someone that's supposed to have a ring and it's not comming up with info, then see if you can get a caster that you've come to know to ID it for you and make sure they hand it back after they ID it - the odds of them having a fake one on hand to pull a switch is almost zero.
RE: Cautious yes, stupid no
# Apr 07 2001 at 2:03 AM Rating: Default
The rings don't have to be identified; I just finished this quest, and all the rings show stats without need for identification. BTW.. enchanters can cast identify, as well as bards, maybe more classes, I'm not certain.

I believe if you want to do a quest, it shouldn't be 10 mins.,I am towards the end of this quest and Gynok is the last a long one I know, but to me is worth the wait for this item, it is a lot of fun to do different quests instead of just trying to lvl, adventure out and try a few...you'll enjoy...)

Gynok the truth
# Mar 29 2001 at 11:07 PM Rating: Default
there is nothing special you can do to make Gynok spawn more. nothing at all. i just came off a horrific 33 hour camp of that POS.

about that creepy decaying skeleton you can target but not kill, i petitioned to have a GM come kill him. Gynok didn't spawn with that skeleton there for a 14 hour straight camp i did one day.

at the time Gynok spawned i was just telling my guild that i was offering a reward worth ten times the paw itself for anyone who would do the camp and kill Gynok. i was losing it) 33 hours in the befallen will do that to you.

yeah, Gynok just spawned, like he always does, RANDOMLY. he spawns right by the zone in. he has place holders that spawn in the same place, they walk to the 3rd floor and walk back. so if you miss one, it doesn't matter, it will come back.

you don't have to clear the 3rd floor, you don't have to do anything but stare at the wall and kill place holders every 16 minutes, do this til Gynok spawns.

i haven't heard that anything other than the plat ring has dropped off of Gynok in a while. not sure if it was changed or not. but anyway, there is no magical formula to get him to spawn. there is a 3% chance he will spawn every 16 miutes. either you get lucky, or you don't.
RE: Gynok the truth
# Apr 09 2001 at 7:15 AM Rating: Default
Yep its true. There is no way to force spawn him. I and a friend have spent combined over 3 weeks of game time in there and have gotten only one plat. ring. I went 13hrs stright and never saw him. Just keep looking at the zone and killing any mob that pops there. Drop them fast, do not let them wander off. It takes awhile for them to get back up. SO all you are doing is incressing your wate time. Good luck to all.
Still camping after 3weeks :-(

#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 22 2001 at 6:42 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You all have to dp the long boring quest for this item? hehe...... I got for free, took me about 5 minutes to get this Paw..... Here's the story....... Well, i was walking along in the Greater Faydark when a named fairy shouted "im going to hide somewhere". Then later it shouted "OK! im hidden, everyone, try to find me!" well, the fairy was just standing there waiting, eveyone was around it and ouldn't do anything, i got bored, and went away. Then i aw a different named fairy with the same last name and i attacked it and it said "you found me this time, but can you find me now?" and casted root and flash of light and went away. then i saw a different named fairy with the same last name, i attacked it then it said "you found me, but can you find me now?" then feared me. Then i saw a boy fairy with the same last name, i did the same with the others and it feared me and blinded me. Then i saw all of them a couple times more and did the same thing, then i got them all to where the first fairy was, and then everyone could attack the first fairy (you couldn't attack it before i brong them all there) i watched for a little while, then i attacked the fairy, i hit it for a while, then i finally rooted it. The it said "i gave Meudair a prize for playing with us" (by the way, my me name is Meudair) then i looked and my inventory and there was a paw, i right clicked it and believe it or not, it was the Paw of Opolla!!!! i sold it for 6k then =) so, that's how i got it in about 5 minutes

ok well whatever happened was pure luck and thats it
there is no way the paw drops off a fairy in gfay.
the obvious answer is that some higher level gave the paw to a fairy as an event
no way the paw drops off a fairy

Gynok Help
# Mar 22 2001 at 1:29 PM Rating: Decent
A possible sign that Gynok is gonna spawn, is a decaying skelly appears at opposite end of the hall, almost into the pile of rubble. You can't hit him, or cast on him, he is out of range. yet each time I have seen Gynok, it has only been when the skelly was there....Now if he will just spawn so I get my plat ring and get my paw! The first time I saw him, he dropped the gold, the second time, he dropped the plat to another camper, just after I came in... sigh. Back to camping forever... (they're coming to take me away haha!)
Fungus Mutant
# Mar 21 2001 at 2:48 AM Rating: Default
I was in Upper Guk camping the AC room for my gatorscale legs, got those and did a room check. No one was camping mutant, I went down he had already spawned so I jumped him. I did not know the drones heal so the fight was pretty long, but I won, behold Guk Weed. I medded up, killed all the healers in room, and killed Mutant again and got the other no drop item. Total Time 20 minutes. My point, it's all luck and he can be solo'ed at 30 by Druid. Cast bramble coat, sheild of thistles, endure posion. Don't bother with root this time, cast, crud, immoulate, and mele. Have healing, not greater healing memed cause he will posion you with clockwork positon which makes you spin. When you stop spinning get off a Heal and Mele. The mutant does not have a lot of HP and if you keep room clear the healers can't help him.
He will die between your DoT's, Damage Sheilds, and Mele.

Good Luck

#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 05 2001 at 4:01 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Are you guys nuts? This item is so easy to get its not even funny, I sell them for 4k a pop because I can grab them simple. Ya kill Vin Molter, kill Gynok Moltar (Usually always drops platinum ring), get the silver ring from Black burrow, and kill the fungus in Guk a few times, simple. I do this quest in about 2 hours unless something happens and I can't get the camp, but 2 hours for 4k is damn nice.
2 hours? Smoke another one

Silver Ring Spawn
# Mar 04 2001 at 12:20 AM Rating: Decent
The Silver ring required to complete the paw can be found at the bottom of a pool in BlackBurrow at loc 0,-80. This is the same pool you would land in if you were to jump all the way to the bottom of the chasm that opens up to the top of the BB zone - I suggest walking down however. :)

I don't know how often the object spawns, but I suspect it's not that rare - most pure item spawns seem fairly rapid and I found it rather quickly.
Just Lucky, I guess..

I decided, on a whim, to do this quest. Started one night, went to kill Vin Moltar first. Killed everything that moved in the area. Finally, after about 1 1/2 hrs, Vin spawned. Note: don't just root him, snare him. I didn't snare, and he went swimming. Was a pain to catch him, kill him, and avoid the spec that wanted to guard his corpse. After Vin, I went to kill Gynok. I was watching over two younger guildmates while I waited for Gynok, which made the time go by easier than sitting there doing nothing. Took about 4 hours before he spawned, and he dropped plat ring, some ancient ring, and words. From there, went to the fungus mutant. It was camped, but they left after about 5 spawns. Spent about 4 hours there also, including a couple extra kills after I had gotten the two things I needed. Tp'd over to toxx, ran to Kerra, and got my copper and gold rings. Then off to NK, ran to blackburrow, and went swimming. I had no clue where to find the silver ring, but I got very lucky, and found it in less than 5 minutes. There I stood, with all rings in the container. I nervously pressed the combine button, and voila! One Paw of Opolla. I logged after that. When I logged back on later in the day... I said, what the heck. Went back to Vin, and within an hour had another container. Picked up the silver ring again. Then I went hunting. But a good start on a second Paw. I'll collect the rest of the rings in down time, and once I get them all, sell the first for profit. =) Who knows, maybe one day I'll have the pp for eboots. =P

I have killed him twice. First time i killed him It was with my 34 necro and i was just tryin to kill the theumigist guy. i zoned in and he hit me so i dropped him quick and he dropped a copper ring. Then when i was 36 i zoned in to clear the zone and right when i did i hear "you will not evade me" shouted by him. I had no idea who he was and then suddenly he attacked me and my pet killed him. I looted a plat ring so i asked what they were for in e commons and a guy payed 1kpp for both of them so.... about 2 minutes and i just got a new robe =)
you got robbed

can this be used as a weapon?
# Feb 20 2001 at 10:54 AM Rating: Decent
I am in the process of getting the testemant of veneer, and that will go in my secondary slot. If I put this in my primary weapon slot can I use it as a weapon?
No...
# Mar 02 2001 at 6:59 AM Rating: Decent
You can't use it as a weapon. But you can build good combos with it. For example: if you are in a group and don't have to melee, use the paw and the testament for a total of +19 wis.

Personally I replaced the Testament with a "Charred Guardian Shield". It has one less wis bonus than the Testament, but 10 AC more. In my primary hand I use either the Paw (when I'm only casting (kiting, in groups)) or a Runed Falchion (if I need to melee or want to melee :-))

I've started this quest but I didn't start at the beginning....I went straight to vin...do I need to talk to those guys first?
RE: Begin at the beginning
# Mar 04 2001 at 12:24 AM Rating: Decent
No need to begin any further back than Moltor Vin. Though honestly it isn't worth doing much of the footwork for this quest until you've gotten the platinum ring - that appears to be by far the most difficult step due to the rarity of its monster spawn and drop (I bought mine for 1kpp rather than camping it).

Moltor Vin is fairly easy to kill if you don't want to do the somewhat time consuming Rat Ear Pie quest (conned very low blue for a lvl 32 and was a very easy fight, imho) - just keep in mind that this is a qeynos guard and merchant hit, though apparently not a severe one.
