Stage 1: The Agent

Find Kalatrina Plossen downstairs in the Hall of Truth at 771.98, -162.19, -166.01.

You say, 'Hail, Kalatrina Plossen'

Kalatrina Plossen says 'Hail! Welcome to the Hall of Truth. We, the Knights of Truth, are all the hope this city has of loosening the grip of Lucan D'lere and his militia. I seek a young knight to [serve the will of the Truthbringer].'

You say, 'I serve the will of the Truthbringer.'

Kalatrina Plossen says 'Stand tall then, knight! We have need of your services. We have sent a man to infiltrate the militia. We fear he may soon be found out. Take him this note of warning. Say the words, 'Truth is good,' and you shall find him. Be careful, young knight. The militia does not take prisoners.'

You receive A Sealed Letter, which identifies as "To Alayle." The text is,

Please return home at once. Mother is not well ! Your Father, Mithmar.

None of the Militia guards in East or West Freeport respond to the phrase "Truth is good" save one. Head to the Militia guardhouse in East Freeport. Guard Alayle may be found in the basement at -1040, +850.

You say, 'Hail, Guard Alayle'

Guard Alayle says 'Greetings, citizen! You should not be in the Militia House. These are restricted grounds. Please leave at once unless you have business here.'

You say, 'Truth is good.'

Guard Alayle says 'Ssshhh!! Pipe down. The others might hear you. You must have something for me. Kalatrina must have given you something if you serve the Hall of Truth. If you have nothing, please leave. You will blow my cover.'

Give Guard Alayle the sealed letter.

Guard Alayle says 'This is not good news. I must leave immediately. Here. Take this to Kala.. I mean my father. I found it on the floor of Sir Lucan D'Lere's quarters. Thanks again, messenger. I got this just in time.'

You receive A Tattered Flier, the text of which is:

ZIMEL'S BLADES
..... ... .... .. ...
....... ...... ... .. ... ....... .... ...

At this point, Krazen Loosh spawns inside the guardhouse and, after a brief delay, approaches Guard Alayle.

You say, 'Hail, Krazen Loosh'

Krazen Loosh says 'The towering wall of stone is clearly unmovable at this point, being held in place by collection of magical energies.'

Krazen Loosh says 'Hello, Alayle. We just got a message from Qeynos. I think you should come with me.'

Guard Alayle says 'Oh no!! It is too late!! Run!!'

Krazen Loosh says 'As you try to open penetrate the stone wall it is clearly being held in place by a powerful force.'

Krazen and other nearby guards attack and most likely kill Alayle.

Guard Alayle says 'My comrades will avenge my death.'

What you are supposed to do at this point is return to Kalatrina and hand her the tattered flier. Unfortunately, there is a bug in the quest. You need the tattered flier for a later stage of the quest, but Kalatrina doesn't return it. You either need to obtain another flier (by re-running the quest when Alayle respawns) or just don't hand the flier to Kalatrina. If you do hand her the flier, she says this:

Kalatrina Plossen says 'Zimel's Blades?! Hmmmmm. It doesn't ring a bell and the remainder of the writing is too hard to make out. It kind of looks like a list of prices. You know, down at the Office of the People they might be able to tell us if this place exists. Go speak with Rashinda. She knows all about Freeport. If [Zimel's Blades] existed, you must report back to me what happened to it.'

Head to the Office of the People, not far from the Hall of Truth, and find Rashinda Elore upstairs.

You say, 'Hail, Rashinda Elore'

Rashinda Elore says 'Hello. I am Rashinda Elore. The city Landholder Manager. If you have business to discuss, please direct it to my two clerks in the other room. Good day.'

You say, 'Blades'

Rashinda Elore says 'Zimel's Blades? It used to be a fine place of rare weaponry. [Ariska Zimel] was the owner. No one knows what happened to the man. He just vanished overnight. His shop used to be in East Freeport which is now a slum, er, I mean, which now has plenty of available lots for sale with plenty of potential. As for Zimel's Blades, we [condemned] it.'

You say, 'Who is Ariska Zimel?'

Rashinda Elore says 'Ariska Zimel was a human blacksmith, a master when it came to making swords, I hear. He kept to himself a lot. He disappeared about one year ago. A lot of people were disappointed when we had to condemn Zimel's Blades. All the merchandise was handed over to [Groflah Steadirt]. Mostly charred junk.'

You say, 'Who is Groflah Steadirt?'

Rashinda Elore says 'Groflah Steadirt is the dwarven owner of Groflah's Forge which is right near here. He was Ariska Zimel's best friend. They were apparently avid travelers before settling down here in Freeport. I guess it was during their travels that they picked up the fine arts of the forge. You should talk to Groflah about Zimel. He can tell you more than I can.'

You say, 'Why was it condemned?'

Rashinda Elore says 'About a week after Ariska Zimel's disappearance, strange noises were heard from his shop. Loud booms and rumbling as though the earth itself were exploding. When the militia got to the shop, they said the shop was badly burned by an exploding boiler. They had us condemn the building due to its unsafe structure.'

Return to Kalatrina again.

You say, 'Zimel's Blades was condemned.'

Kalatrina Plossen says 'Why would Lucan visit a condemned building? He must be searching for something. When I last visited the local forge, I heard rumors of Lucan searching for a sword named Soulfire. If this is true, you must find it first! No more power should go his way. Seek this sword out!'

Stage 2: Groflah and the Bar

Your only clue at this point is Rashinda mentioning that you should talk to Groflah. Since Groflah got all of Zimel's old inventory and you have what appears to be a price list from Zimel (the tattered flier), maybe a visit to Groflah is in order. Find Groflah Steadirt upstairs in his forge in West Freeport at 420.45, -1635.50, -92.44.

You say, 'Hail, Groflah Steadirt'

Groflah Steadirt says 'Greetings, adventurer! Certainly a person who looks as hardened as yourself deserves a fine blade to match your prowess. Here at Groflah's Forge, we supply you with only the finest quality weapons.'

You say, 'Do you know Ariska Zimel?'

Groflah Steadirt says 'Zimel!! I do not know who you mean. Now go away. I am very busy. I will not talk here!!'

Give him the tattered flier.

Groflah Steadirt says 'Where did you find this? This was the main price list of Zimel's Blades, but it should be all burnt up. I was at Zimel's right after the fire and I did not see it hanging where it should have been. The entire inside was gutted and . . . wait . . . the sequence of the dots!! Hmmm. I cannot talk with you here. Meet me at the Seafarer's by the docks at night. Give me the note when next we meet.'

Not surprisingly, Groflah is a bit antsy about discussing this issue. Head to East Freeport and find the Seafarer's Roost by the docks. Groflah will (rarely) spawn during the night time at the far table; his placeholders are Talym Shoontar, Sir Edwin Motte and Imxil Tbrow. While you wait, buy four Drom's Champagnes for a later step of the quest.

Killing his placeholders causes huge faction hits, and may not make him spawn faster.

When Groflah pops, hail him. His hail text and bracketed keywords lead to an unrelated quest; you can ignore them. I just list them here for the sake of completeness.

You say, 'Hail, Groflah Steadirt'

Groflah Steadirt says 'Greetings, ______! Join in the [celebration]! Have a few drinks. Alas, there are no [Tumpy Tonics].'

Give him the tattered flier.

Groflah Steadirt says 'This used to be hanging in Zimel's Blades. It is the price list. It is badly faded though. There was a fire in Zimel's Blades and I was on the scene just afterward. I did not see this hanging. I wonder who took it . . . Hmmmm.. oh, yes.. the markings on the list! It is a code! Here. I will fill it in. Read it. You probably do not even know who Ariska is.'

You receive a different Tattered Flier from Groflah here. Although this second flier has the same name and icon, it contains very different text. It reads:

ZIMEL'S BLADES
..h... e... l .. p.. ...
..c..... ..a.... ... p.. t... ..i....v. .... ...

You say, 'Who is Ariska?'

Groflah Steadirt says 'Ariska Zimel was my best friend. He and I learned our knowledge of metal from such places as Halas and Kaladim. When he disappeared, it seemed to involve foul play. He must be alive somewhere in the city. I pray this is not the work of [Pietro Zarn].'

You say, 'Who is Pietro Zarn?'

Groflah Steadirt says 'While we were traveling through the Lavastorm Mountains, we happened upon a caravan. They wore emblems in honor of the evil god, Innoruuk. They did not see us, but we saw them. And most importantly of all, Ariska saw the apparent leader's sword. It was glowing with great energy. Suddenly, the evil knights were in a battle. The knights gave chase, leaving their camp unattended. The knight who owned the sword left it behind, opting to fight with another, leading me to believe it was not his to begin with. It was at this point that Ariska ran down and grabbed the sword. A few weeks later, we were to learn that the knight was a powerful man by the name of Pietro Zarn and that he was looking for a sword stolen from him. He called it .. Soulfire. I believe Zarn must have finally found Ariska.'

Finding the next person to talk to requires pure luck. One of two things is supposed to happen.

First, if Branis Noolright (one of the bards) and Tykar Renlin (the beggar at the bar) both spawn at the same time, and the bard sings his pro-Lucan song, the beggar will go off on a rant, mentioning Zimel. This would lead you to question him, which sets you off on the rest of the quest.

Henna Treghost says 'Sing us a melody.'

Branis Noolright says 'Here's one for Sir Lucan... He's just a ruler. In a long line of rulers. Looking for a few more orcs to slay. They say that he fights them with one hand tied to his back. And he won't leave Freeport till you remember his name. Thank you.'

Tykar Renlin says 'That man is no just ruler. He has jailed me and my friend Zimel for merely begging.'

Second, Tykar will give his response to the key word "Zimel" if any player mentions it in /say in Tykar's hearing without having another NPC targeted. This leads me to think that you get your next clue if Tykar is up while you're chatting with Groflah. It is possible that if an NPC mentions "Zimel" within earshot of Tykar, Tykar will respond as well.

Stage 3: Tykar and Zimel

Tykar's placeholders are Plnorrick Spinecracker, Biggle Lombokker, Lozani and Tlin Bowfright. Again, killing them incurs some nasty faction hits; it's advised you just wait. Tykar usually appears very late during the game night. When he does, ask him about Zimel. 2016 update: Tykar Renlin (the beggar at the bar) - Just wanted to update this little bit - its not pure luck. I had Tykar spawn in front of Henna Treghost at 12 AM (Midnight game time) and followed his path. At which 2 AM he roams back to his spawn loc and de pops.

You say, 'Hail, Tykar Renlin'

Tykar Renlin says 'Do you have any spare coppers for a thirsty soul?'

You say, 'What can you tell me of Zimel?'

Tykar Renlin says 'What?! You know my friend Zimel?! I would like to speak of him, but my mouth is so parched. Maybe a fine grog would loosen my lips. I am uncertain which flavor shall do the trick.'

Give him the four Drom's Champagnes you purchased earlier, unstacked.

Tykar Renlin says 'Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.'

Tykar Renlin says 'Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.'

Tykar Renlin says 'Oooh!! That is the taste. My lips are almost loose. Maybe another will do the trick.'

Tykar Renlin says 'Ahh!! That was good. Now where were we?. Oh yes. My friend Zimel is a fellow beggar. He was locked up in the arena. They were going to let him go when the Freeport Militia came for him. Ha!! He is crazy as a troll now. I took this blanket from his cell before I was released. I no longer need it and my guilt has reached its peak. I do not want crazy old Zimel to freeze. Perhaps you can return it to him.'

You receive a blanket called Bunker Cell #1, which identifies as "Zimel's Blanket."

To move things along and prevent you from having to repeat steps, go outside the West Freeport gate and collect a Fire Beetle Eye, a Rat Ear, and Snake Scales. Also, buy a Water Flask and Bottle from one of the vendors that sells them. Combine the Fire Beetle Eye and Rat Ear in an oven or spit to make Edible Goo, and combine the Snake Scales, Water Flask, and Bottle in a brew barrel to make Bog Juice. Both trivial at 21.

Once you have both, return to East Freeport and find the Arena. The Freeport prison is underneath there, guarded by members of the Steel Warriors (Freeport warriors' guild). There is only one prisoner in the jail, named (simply enough) "a prisoner". He will occasionally let out an emote with some nonsense blabbering. Hailing him likewise gets gibberish. Mentioning Zimel, though, gets a much more interesting response.

a prisoner says 'unngh!!.. Biggle and boo.. Goggle froo..'

You say, 'Hail, a prisoner'

a prisoner says 'Aaaarghhh!!.. Buggl n gump.. Figgle and fump..'

You say, 'Are you Ariska Zimel?'

a prisoner stares deeply into your eyes.. Very eerie!!

Give him the blanket, the edible goo, and the bog juice.

a prisoner says 'Bog n Goo.. Blanket too!!'

a prisoner says 'Bog n Goo.. Blanket too!!'

a prisoner hands you something and says, 'Hide, hide, safe, cee.. lerk has the clue.. Must travel.. Travel.. Travel.. Tunaria's corridor..'

You receive a key called H. K. 102, which identifies as "Highkeep Strongbox 102."

Figuring out the next step takes a number of deductions. Tunaria is the old name for the continent of Antonica, and Tunaria's Corridor is the old name for the pass linking the Karanas to the Commonlands (via Kithicor Woods). Nowadays, it is called Highhold Pass. Your next clue is the key itself. The name of the key suggest an abbreviation, and if you cast Identify on it, you'll get the giveaway: it's a key from Highkeep . "Cee... lerk" actually means "clerk". Put it all together, and Zimel is telling you to take the key to the bank clerk in Highpass Keep.

Stage 4: Highpass Keep

Due to a change in game mechanics, you can no longer hand items directly to bankers. Instead, if you hail the banker, she will tell you to hand the key to her assistant. Do so.

You say, 'Hail, Bank Clerk Jaylin'

Bank Clerk Jaylin says 'Greetings! I am Jaylin Monel, your Highkeep bank clerk. If you are here to close an account, please return your strongbox key to my assistant Kiolna and she will return any items you may have stored.'

You say, 'Hail, Assistant Kiolna'

Assistant Kiolna says 'Hello! I am Jaylin's new assistant, Kiolna. If you wish to hand in your keys, please give them to me and I will be happy to assist you! It is a pleasure doing business with you.'

Give her the key.

Assistant Kiolna says 'I am sorry to see you check out. Here is all you had in your box. We hope to serve you again. Have a nice day! Next!'
You gain experience!!
You receive 8 silver from Assistant Kiolna.
You receive 3 gold from Assistant Kiolna.

You receive a Sealed Note, which identifies as "Zimel's Letter From Hayle." The note reads as follows:

Ariska,

For your great service to the Temple of Life I shall honor your request and hold Soulfire until I see this note presented to me by either you or a noble courier of the Hall of Truth.

Brother Hayle

Stage 5: Brother Hayle

Time to find Brother Hayle. Head to the Temple of Life in North Qeynos, and ask around about Brother Hayle. Priestess Jahnda will respond.

You say, 'Hail, Priestess Jahnda'

Priestess Jahnda says 'Welcome to the Temple of Life, where the will of Rodcet Nife, the Prime Healer, is carried out. I am the High Priestess Jahnda. If you require any training in our ways, please talk to any of our priests or any of the paladins of the Temple of Life.'

You say, 'Where is Brother Hayle?'

Priestess Jahnda says 'Brother Hayle Mool is one of our finest clerics. He could convert anyone to the ways of Rodcet Nife. Recently, he has been out in the [Plains of Karana] trying to befriend the [Splitpaw clan]. I pray he has not become their prisoner or even worse, their dinner.'

This section of text is in fact part of another quest that relates to Brother Hayle; it explains in a little more detail why Hayle is in Splitpaw Lair. It's not directly relevant to SoulFire, but it does have some interesting info about Hayle. The Blessed Oil Quest has more information.

Head to Southern Karana where you will find Brother Hayle surrounded by gnolls at approximate location -1514, +2246.

You say, 'Hail, Brother Hayle'

Brother Hayle says 'This is no place for you. These Splitpaws are very fierce. Only the power of Rodcet Nife will guide them to the light. By the way, I might warn you that the cells here lock behind you.'

Give him the sealed note.

Brother Hayle says 'Finally!! I see that Ariska has found a noble knight to retrieve Soulfire. Per Ariska's orders I am not to give Soulfire to you until you can show me [proof of nobility]. You must honor both the Temple of Life as well as the Hall of Truth and to a high degree. Only then shall you hold Soulfire.'

Your faction standing with Bloodsabers has been adjusted by -2.

You gain experience!!

Brother Hayle is on Temple of Life faction. What he's warning you about here is that your faction with both the Temple of Life in Qeynos and the Hall of Truth in Freeport must be towards the upper end of "warmly." If they are not, Hayle will eat your turn-in. Killing Lucan (discussed below) will likely get your faction high enough with the Hall of Truth; if not, a second kill will most certainly do it, but be aware that this will make you KOS with the Freeport Rogues, called the Coalition of Tradesfolk Underground (not to mention KOS to the Freeport Militia). Raising your faction with the Temple of Life is somewhat more onerous, and the details of how to raise it are beyond the scope of this guide. Note that the only way to make sure your faction is high enough is to either risk the turn-in at "warmly" and hope, or just raise your faction to "ally" -- that's guaranteed to be enough.

You receive back "a note" -- notice that the name and icon both changed. The lore text is "Returned Letter From Hayle", though the note's text is still the same:

Ariska,

For your great service to the Temple of Life I shall honor your request and hold Soulfire until I see this note presented to me by either you or a noble courier of the Hall of Truth.

Brother Hayle

You say, 'What proof of nobility?'

Brother Hayle says 'I require the returned note I gave you, a Testimony of Truth, a Sword of Faith and finally the hilt of Soulfire. The Testimony and Sword of Faith are earned in the Hall of Truth, but for the hilt of Soulfire you shall have to battle [Xicotl].'

You say, 'Who is Xicotl?'

Brother Hayle says 'Xicotl is the evil troll who attempted to steal Soulfire from the vaults of the Temple of Life. The hilt of Soulfire broke off during the battle and now rests in the hands of this troll shadowknight. From what I have heard, he is frequently an invited guest at the castle called Mistmoore. Woe to any paladin who dares set foot upon the land of Mistmoore, but should you attempt it you might search the guest rooms for the troll. May Rodcet Nife walk with you.'

Stage 6: Collecting the Items

Now you have to go out and collect the three items Hayle wants. You already have the returned Note, so you don't need to worry about that. Don't lose or destroy the note, though!

Brilliant Sword of Faith

Find Valeron Dushire upstairs in the Hall of Truth in West Freeport at 1130, -500.

Valeron Dushire says 'I am Sir Valeron Dushire, leader of the order of the Knights of Truth. If your soul shines with purity and strength, I urge you to join our order. The might of Mithaniel Marr stands behind all who join. Soon that might will help us free this city from the tyranny of the [Freeport Militia].'

You say, 'What Freeport Militia?'

Valeron Dushire says 'The Freeport Militia took control of this city long ago. They are nothing more than a group of thugs not worthy of respect. They follow the words of [Sir Lucan] D'Lere. He has been a thorn in this city's side for too long. If you wish to aid us in the fight against tyranny, go speak with Jemoz or Sir Theron. May the Truthbringer shine upon your soul.'

You say, 'Who is Sir Lucan?'

Valeron Dushire says 'Lucan is a bad seed. You see, I trained Sir Lucan. He was nothing more than a street rat who was taken in by the Temple of Marr. The priests taught him and found him to be very agile and strong. They requested either the Priests of Marr or the Knights of Truth take him on as a squire. Gygus could not spare the trainers at the time and so we took the boy. The boy became a man, and a very formidable knight. Then something [went awry].'

You say, 'What went awry?'

Valeron Dushire says 'During one of our crusades into the lands of Norrath, we left Sir Lucan in charge of the remaining knights. He did much good and the people respected him. He was overtaken by power. He soon began to hire mercenaries to guard the city, calling them the Freeport Militia. His true downfall began when he killed Sentry Dillius, a paladin of the Priests of Marr. His divine powers were stripped from his soul. He was a paladin no longer. He and his militia now control the city. They treat it as their playground and bully the populace. Someone must [stop Sir Lucan].'

You say, 'I will stop Sir Lucan' (He will not respond to this nicely unless you are amiable)

Valeron Dushire says 'That would be good, but I doubt you can. We have been trying for years and are unable to get him apart from the militia. If you do the impossible and destroy Sir Lucan, bring me his testimony. Every knight of the Hall of Truth carries a signed testimony. Sir Lucan still holds his.'

Go kill Lucan in East Freeport at -1055, 717; you'll probably want a few friends to help you. Again, the mechanics of how to pull and kill Lucan, whether solo or with a group, are beyond the scope of this guide. When you kill his live form, a skeleton form pops right over his corpse. Kill him again.

Sir Lucan D`Lere says 'Die, dog!!'

TESTIMONY TRUTH

I believe in the might of Mithaniel Marr. I shall uphold the words of Marr and defend them with my life. I shall protect the righteous weak and avenge the souls of those whose life has been taken for naught. From this day forth I shall become a living vessel for the ideals of the Truthbringer and if I should ever falter from his grace may he cast me from this life and into the lifeless void.

PRAISE BE TO MARR

Sir Lucan D'Lere

Take the Testimony of Truth you looted off Lucan's skeletal form to Valeron Dushire and hand it to him.

Valeron Dushire says 'Praise be to Marr!! You have done the impossible!! Sir Lucan is finally sent to the higher courts of the Tribunal. The city now has a chance to prosper. Testimony

Find Merko Quetalis in the Hall of Truth. He's standing in the "back yard" area, near the aqueduct that runs through the grounds.

You say 'Hail, Merko Quetalis'

Merko Quetalis says 'Hail, good citizen! You have entered the Hall of Truth. What is it you seek? Many citizens come to request aid in dealing with the local rogues or the oppression of our sworn enemies, the Freeport Militia. A few valiant ones have been [summoned to the Hall of Truth].'

You say, 'I have been summoned to the Hall of Truth.'

Merko Quetalis says 'You have been summoned? You do not have the look of nobility. You must be a [squire]. There are many squires who have been summoned to our Hall. Not all pass the [Test of Truth].'

You say 'I am a squire.'

Merko Quetalis says 'Then I welcome you, Squire . Being a squire is the first step to becoming a true knight of the Hall of Truth. Remember always to protect and serve the meek. I have a [small task] which suits a squire perfectly.'

You say 'What small task?'

Merko Quetalis says 'Venture to the Commonlands and seek out our noble friend Altunic Jartin. He lives and works out of his home. Hand him this note.'

You receive A Note, which identifies as "Note To Altunic." It says:

Altunic,

I have sent this squire to look into your problem for you. Hope to see you at services at the Temple of Marr.

Sir Merko Quetalis
Hall of Truth

Head to the Commonlands and find Altunic Jartin. He wanders around the western part of the zone, from his house (the small, empty shack that stands alone at the far west of the zone) past the orc camps and back.

You say 'Hail, Altunic Jartin.'

Altunic Jartin says 'Greetings, traveler! Have you need of provisions or perhaps other wares? I sell what I find upon the battlegrounds of the Commonlands.'

Give him the note.

Altunic Jartin says 'You are the one they have sent? A squire?!! I hope you can help me. I gather items strewn upon the grounds of the Commonlands. I sell them at good prices. Lately, I have been terrorized by a human rogue named Narl. He will no doubt appear at my [house] soon. Bring his head to me.'

You say, 'Where is your house?'

Altunic Jartin says 'Follow me.'

Altunic leads you to his house. About 30 seconds after your conversation, Squire Narl appears by Altunic's door. I don't think he despawns until someone kills him. Attack him.

Squire Narl says 'Death to all who oppose Innoruuk's will!!'

Cloth shirts will drop occasionally off the various monsters in the Commonlands, or you can buy it from the inn between the two orc camps for about 6gp. Note that you cannot use a Small Cloth Shirt or a Large Cloth Shirt. It must be called "Cloth Shirt" and nothing else. Obtain the shirt and hand it to Altunic.

You say 'I have earned the Token of Generosity.'

Merko Quetalis says 'Go to the deserts of North Ro. Seek out the desert tarantulas. Stand and face this dreaded creature. If you are lucky, you will find a venom sac. This is what I require. When you return, hand it to me.'

The item you want is A Spider Venom Sac, which drops from Dune Tarantulas in North Ro or Giant Spiders in the Commonlands. You may also have luck checking the local vendors in those areas. Give the sac to Merko once you have at least Amiable faction (128) with Knights of Truth before the hand in.

Guard Willia was Moved it was spawns in the water near you, just inside the tunnel. But now this mob spawns at +849, -213, -214 down in the jail cells of the Halls of Truth. As you come down the stairs to the jail cells, turn right and then left. The cell on the left is where Guard Willia. She is on Freeport Militia faction, so if you're not KOS to the Militia yet, you can chat with her.

*Guard Willia says, 'Please do not harm me! I am a lady underneath this garb. I just wanted to join the [Freeport Militia] to help my people... Please... Please... I am nobody. Marr have mercy. I give you the truth. Is that not what you stand for? Merko is my Uncle!'

You say, 'Hail, Guard Willia'

Guard Willia says 'Please, let me go. I shall leave the [Freeport Militia]. I did not know they were such a vile group.'

You say, 'What about the Freeport Militia?'

Guard Willia says 'I thought they were nothing more than the local militia. Little did I know they were so vile. Now I am stuck [here] and I ask for your forgiveness.'

You say, 'Why are you here?'

Guard Willia says 'I came here to escape the militia and ask [Merko to forgive] me.'

You say, 'Why ask Merko to forgive you?'

Guard Willia says 'I had a small encounter with his wife, my aunt. She was quite red after that altercation. I guess I upset her in a great way, somehow. Could you please go ask Merko to forgive [Willia]. I shall wait here for his answer.'

If you don't attack Willia for a while, she will say:

Guard Willia says 'Please do not harm me!! I am a lady underneath this garb. I just wanted to join the [Freeport Militia] to help my people.. Please.. Please.. I am nobody. Marr have mercy. I give you the truth. Is that not what you stand for? Merko is my Uncle!!'

Return to Merko and question him, but be swift -- Willia runs off after about one minute.

You say, 'Who is Willia?'

Merko Quetalis says 'She is my niece. Lucan ordered her to kill my wife.. She did. She now belongs to the Freeport Militia. As part of the militia, she must die!! Let no militia member stand in the way of nobility.'

Your timer before Willia runs off is still ticking, so you have to decide fast. If you don't kill Willia, you fail the Test of Truth and you either have to do it again from the start, or you have to give up on SoulFire.

Assuming you let Willia run away, she says this:

Guard Willia says 'Thank you, my friend. I shall mend my ways.. maybe.'

If you do decide to kill her, make sure to root her, as she'll attempt to run to the nearest zone line. If you fail to kill her, you fail the Test of Truth.

I went down to the jail cell below to turn in the blanket and the edible goo and bog juice but i dont see zimel, I only see an npc in one of the jail cells name "a prisoner" when i hail him he says something weird and when i say zimel's name he says "I stare into your eyes, how earie." Do i turn the stuff into that guy or someone else?

Yes that is Zimmel. Give him the blanket and he will say Bog and Goo.. then you give him the edible goo and bog juice.. they dont need to be at seperate times.. just give him both and you will get your key.. now your off to Highpass keep to see the Banker. The one in the window.
Hope this helps.

Follow the steps that someone posted..Easy as 1 2 3.. he/she outlined it exactly.. the quest is too broken up to do it the right way..I know I tried it by following the steps the first time and lost my list and after I got it a second time I talked with the dwarf and couldnt find him.. so I desided to skip that whole portion and all I need now is kill Lucan and raise my faction a bit more and I will have a blazing Soulfire at my ready.

RE: killing sir lucan
# May 01 2001 at 4:53 PM Rating: Decent
Sadly, yes. My friends and I on EMarr killed Lucan last night. Since I'm already KOS, everyone else zoned when Lucan got really low, and I took the faction hit. The undead then spawned, and as I'm 46, he proceeded to *** rape me. Everyone zoned back in, started killing it, and just before everyone rezoned, the enchy nuked it too soon, and 3 people took factions hits. The warrior who forges there wasn't too happy, since he went from indiff to scowling. Also, here's the team we had. 46/ranger (me), 45/war, 49/mage, 49/enchy, 55/druid. Pretty much, we had the war who wasn't KOS go in, kick Lucan, and run to the zone. The mage who wasn't KOS then hailed Lucan until everyone else left. Some stupid newbie pulled 1 guard to the zone, so the enchy spent his time mezzing the guard, while the mage had her air pet try to solo Jentry. The druid snared Lucan, nuked him, and kept the agro while the war and I followed closely behind and tried to hit him (I hate how close you have to be in WFP to hit stuff). We finally took Lucan down after about 5 mins of kiting him from the druid and us shoving our Wurmy's up his rearside. So really, if the guard hadn't come out, we wouldn't have needed the enchy, and so, a 4 person team (55/druid, 46/ranger, 45/war, 49/mage) could have probably taken him. Was fun other than losing the faction, I'll say that.

Call me ****, but I have been trying to do this quest as if I was the first to do this. I have followed the spoilers given here and have gotten the note for Brother Hayle. However, I have a real problem with the gaps in the storyline. The first real problem is that Kalatrina should give back the list so you can give it to Groflah. My question that I'd like help with is the following:

After talking to Groflah in the Seafarer's Roost, you find out about Pietro Zarn and that Zimel is somewhere in the city. What is the key that points you to talk to the beggar, Tykar Renlin? Much less, buying him Droms champagnes? Unless someone had inside help from Verant, how was this leap in the storyline ever figured out? I've tried talking to Pietro Zarn, the prisoner, and Sir Lucan, but they offer no assistance (especially to a paladin!). I find that it's these details that make doing quests interesting and fun. The fact that without the spoilers given on web pages such as this, that the quest cannot be figured out, ruins the fun.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

This used to work if you are KOS to fp militia. However, a patch was done, and now Slansin can see invis, and the "intiate trade and have someone invis you" tactic doesn't work. So if you're KOS to him then he won't accept them from you

The skinny...
# Apr 10 2001 at 2:29 AM Rating: Decent
For those who are wondering about being KOS in FP, as I was when I started this journey (I kill guards as a hobby...it's fun. Try it!) Just so you all know, I just did that part not two days ago...all you need for most of this quest is to sneak around the tunnels of FP...you can get to NFP to do the Test of Truth...you can get to the Seafarer's Roost (it's been mentioned a couple times that Drom's Champaigns are no longer Lore), and there are no guards who will bother you there. Guard Hirazen DOES wander to the docks, but not far enough to aggro.
For the Arena, and the jail beneath...just get someone to give you a GOOD invis. A low-lev Chanter invised me, and they saw right through it. That hurt. =( So later on I helped a Shammy with his Epic, and he was kind enough to keep me invised on the way in and out of the arena. Since he was himself a Troll, he understood about the need for stealth. There are again no guards that come close enough to the arena to pose a threat...and you do NOT need to give Zimel (the only prisoner in the jail, identified as 'a prisoner') the bog juice and edible goo. I dropped some skill points and made both items, but as soon as I gave him the blanket, he gave me the key. I still had the juice and goo quite in my possession. I gave them to him anyway, because he looked rather parched. =)
On the Test of Truth...here's a bit of help, since I had to do Generosity twice. =( Just give Altunic the Cloth Shirt...and give Merko (at the Hall of Truth) the Spider Venom Sac...you'll have both tokens then...just give them to Merko, and the spy will pop...kill him and bring the token there back to Merko to receive your testimony. Which, by the way, pretty much makes you a Knight of Truth, since...that's what that Testimony is. =)
That should clear up a lot of misunderstandings about the more menial parts of this quest...the really hard parts...you're on your own there. I'm getting my Hilt and Brilliant Sword of Faith as soon as I ding 40. Then there will be another flaming sword scampering about Norrath. Happy hunting, mates!

When you turned in the blanket, someone else had already turned in the bog juice and edible goo, which was why that subquest was completed without you having to turn them in.

If you get a quest reward once for turning in less than the quest giver asks for, that's not a basis for assuming that you don't normally need to turn in the other quest items. Often all it means is that someone else already turned in some of the quest items.
Change to Drom's Champagne
# Mar 18 2001 at 4:48 PM Rating: Decent
I can confirm that as of this weekend Drom's Champagne is no longer Lore! So you can now buy 4 at a time, and hand them in at the same time. I did this as 4 seperate Champagnes in the one trade window, and it worked fine.

FYI Tykar spawned between 7 and 8pm the two times that I saw him. Also noticed that the female bartender sells while she is in the main area of the pub, and not just when she is behind the bar. She however does seem to have set times that she wanders behind the bar in case they nerf this in the future. ;)

Not true, it's just a very large faction hit.
A friend of mine got his Freeport Militia faction to kindly before helping with Sir Lucan. Afterwards he was dubious.

I've been trying to find numerical values for faction levels, and can confirm that faction levels are different sizes. 50 bloodstones took my BetaNeutral faction from indifferent to amiable (faction starts at the very bottom of indifferent--made a test character that took a BetaNeutral faction hit, then handed in bloodstones until I was back to indifferent...repeated the process, and it took the same number of bloodstones, 5 I think). It then took another 200 bloodstones to get my BetaNeutral faction to kindly.

This is just speculation, but I would guess faction sizes are symmetrical, with apprehensive and indifferent having a size of 50, and dubious and amiable having a size of 200. Helping to kill Sir Lucan would then give a faction hit of the same size as about 500 bloodstones, a nice round number. It would explain why some people who started amiable only went to glaring instead of scowling.

250..?: Kindly
50..249: Amiable
0..49: Indifferent
-50..-1: Apprehensive (guess)
-250..-51: Dubious (guess)

You'd naturally think you could fix any faction. But I was warmly with the militia before I killed Lucan for the testament, and it dropped me right to kos. Then I went and did the potion quest about 2000 - 3000 times. All the other factions on it are super warmly to me now, but the militia are still kos. well I was kos untill lvl 29 and lured slansin upstairs rooted him then camped to clear aggro while friend hailed him, when I returned I just had a hotkey saying what was needed and did quest like for 2 hrs, when I returned to fp I was dubious, so it does werk it just takes an ungodly amount of clicking and hailing to keep slansin there. You figure you are gonna be at -2000 faction and quest prolly gives +1, so be patient and you will be warmly in 3-4 hrs. long time but beats pick ears by a long shot.

How to get good faction with the militia and Seafarer's peop
# Feb 25 2001 at 2:15 PM Rating: Default
There's another quest on this site called the Inert Potion quest. Just do a quest search of Inert Potion and you'll find it.

If you have good faction with the erudite casters (and if you don't you can just kill heretics till you get it, it's the same people you kill to get deepwater faction) a caster on the top floor of the erudin palace will give you a quest to take a potion down to a guy on the bottom floor. If you pull the guy on the bottom floor to the top, then have a friend hail him while you root him and zone, you can do the whole quest in about 3 seconds. I went from dubious to warmly with everyone in about an hour and a half. Just check the quest for more info, it's really worth it.

Unfortunately, I'm starting to think killing Lucan is irreversible. I went from warmly to scowling instantly, and even after doing this quest for two hours I still can't raise my faction with them.

I followed up on this last night and found some additional information for you. The letter you get from slaying Duggin Scumber, in the Paladin Message quest, does have some foreshadowing to the first part of the Zimel's Blades quest. If you read the letter, it says that certain dark forces have discovered their spy and that the Hall of Truth should recall their spy ASAP. This is what you will be doing as you begin the Zimel's Blades quest with the message delivery that Kalatrina sends you on. However, I have yet to find a direct connection between the two quests, such as some dialog which would direct you to Kalatrina. Good luck on your quest. I have made it up to the point that I have the letter from the High Keep bank clerk. So if you have more questions up to that point, I can help.
RE: Pricelist?
# Feb 20 2001 at 7:45 PM Rating: Decent
Unfortunately, the quest information is incorrect. The proper quest to start with is not the Paladin Message quest as it is called at this web site, but by talking to Kalatrina Plossen in the Hall of Truth and doing the message delivery that she gives you. The Paladin Message quest has nothing to do with the Zimel's Blades quest that I can tell, other than to give you better faction with the Knights of Truth.

The barkeep will no longer sell my Drom's champagne or any drink for that matter. I keep getting the nice little quote(something to the efeect as) "we only serve paladins like you one thing- THE DOOR!!!!" very humourous, but it makes me want to cry (due to the fact that I've seen Tykar spawn almost everytime I am there.) I can't think of anything that I did wrong however he did give me a quest whenever I hailed him concerning some kind of Exotic Drink. Unfortunatley I have to become a world traveler in order to complete this task (I hate boats, especially EQ boats). Oh well off i go, and spend a few hours of running from continent to continent looking for the ingrediants he requires.

I just did this part of the quest with another Paladin in my guild. It turns out that his faction with the barkeep was not good either. However, I was able to buy the Drom's...so if you want to do this the easy way, find another lower level paladin (i.e., one whose faction is not ruined in Freeport yet), and go together. You can keep hailing him, and have him buy the Drom's, trade it to you so that you can give it to Tykar. The Drom's is a lore item, so you can only give one at a time, but if he buys one, gives it to you, then buys another, you'll have 2 ready to go. That way, he needs to buy 2 more, one at a time, trade them to you, and you'll get the blanket. If he wants, he can then buy 4 more, one at a time, and give them to Tykar himself. That way, you'll both end up with a blanket for your troubles. Hope this helps.

this quest is very nice, and the resulting sword is incredible. If your a paladin, you should do this quest as soon as posible. you can complete it at 30, but you'll need some 40-60lvl friends to help you out. I had a friend lvl16 pally friend that completed this quest with the help of lvl50-60 friends, although it was extremely dangerous. have fun and dont attempt this quest until you are 30+
Any Help Appreciated

Compiled all the parts: Hilt, Sword of Faith, note to Brother Hayle, Testament and went to see Brother Hayle. Gave him the note and got experience but no returned note. Gave the testament to check what was happening, and he ate it because my exp was high enough. I then went to Hall of Truth and quested till I got to Warmly. Then over to Qeynos and to the Temple of Light. Quested until KINDLY. Recovered the testament and note again and returned to Brother Hayle. This time, he was Kindly to me. Gave him the note and got exp. Gave him remaining components and he ate them all with no Soulfire... Does ANYONE have thoughts on this???

Having recently completed the soulfire quest, I think I can help you. You MUST con warmly to Brother Hayle. You can check your con status by conning Lashun Novashine in Qeynos. If you are not warmly, you must of course raise your faction. The way that I did this took me about an hour real time to complete.

Hail Lashun Novashine. You can find him either roaming about or standing on the ramp that leads to the floating disk thingy at the paladin guild in Qeynos. Give him 2gp at a time, in return he will buff you and give you exp with +faction. Do this until you con amiably. I started out as apprehensive and worked up to amiable after about 300gp. Once you are amiable...you can get to warmly in a snap. Here's how:

This can be done by yourself, but will be a pain in the ***** It is ideal to have a friend start a char in qeynos, like a paladin following rodcet nife. Have the new char (you CANNOT do this yourself or your faction will be down the *******) kill the koalindl fish that swim in the pond below the floating disk thingy (pally guild). If the fish drops "a corpse" (lore item) have the friend give it to you. (can't remember if it's nodrop..if so, wait a minute and loot it yourself). Give the corpse to Enric who hangs out at the pond. He will give you a random item and your faction will raise significantly. After four fish I was warmly and on my way to Brother Hayle.

As a word of warning...the friend who makes this char will be KOS after a few fish...it might be necessary to have him make another if his getting killed becomes a bother. hehe.

If Enric (who loves the Koalindl fish) is swimming in the water, as he sometimes does, be careful not to kill the fish anywhere near him..he'll kill whoever tries to harm them. I tried in vane to get Enric out of the water, but he's a pretty unmoveable guy. If he's at the North end of the pool..stay on the south end and kill the fish as they swim toward you (away from Enric).

Best of luck to you in your quest for the soulfire!

According to what was posted under NPC - Brother Hayle if ye look at Split Paw Bestiary, you are suppose to get con Warmly to him before he will help ye.
what if you're already KOS to militia?

just wondering how you talk to tykar renlin and buy him champange if you're already KOS to the guards?

and how do you talk to zimel in the jail if you're KOS, won't the guards in there attack you?

You can traverse West Freeport in the sewers. You will end up next to the dock. Inside the Seafarer's Roost, you should not encounter guards.

To do the jail, have someone invis you and head on down.

I did both of these things to complete the blanket portion of the quest.
Do I have to start over

Ok....I got the blanket and made the juice and stuff.....got the key....went to high hold..gave the key to the banker...got some cash and a sealed note....

this is where I have a problem...

I managed to get some guildmates to help me get into Paw...I found Brother Halye...gave him the sealed note.....

and nothing...

He gives me back something called "a note" and mumbes something about [proof of nobility]...and thats it.

No instuctions or anyting....

Do I have to start this thing all over or what...

I would love some guidance

(here is the answer I have from reading and talking to many people. I have not completed the quest yet, but I think I am pretty well informed)

No you have the same note you gave to him, it's just not sealed. Now you need the hilt of soulfire, the testimony and the brilliant sword of faith (the one you get for killing Lucan)

Once you have the other 3 pieces you turn them in to him as you did the note and you will get the Soulfire.

Good Luck fine knight

If you asked him about the proof of Nobility he will tell you the quest or he will tell you that these matters are entrusted to only our loyal members, in which case you need more faction, best way to do that is to go to Qeynos and either hand 2 gold at a time to Noveshine near the cleric guild or to do the fish scale quest, have a mule kill the fish in the pond of the cleric guild and you turn in the scale, bad faction for the mule but good faction for you.
RE: Do I have to start over (IMPORTANT!)

This is IMPORTANT!

If you give him the quest items, and you do not have faction
you lose everything! All of your hardwork down the drain,
right when you might expect to get your flaiming sword.

This ought to be in the Quest guide. Make sure you get the
proper answer from Brother Hayle!

Also, my EQ pet peeve: If you do a quest the quest itself
ought to provide the faction needed. I mean I am KOS to
Freeport now, so the bad guys think highly of me, why
do I not get enough faction from the good guys? It seems
stupid that I have to go feed gold pieces to a cleric in
Qeynos, and keep checking with the Brother in Paw until
I have enough.

Second pet peeve is that if you do not have faction he
ought to return your stuff to you, and ask you to come
back when you are ready. Hey I won the Brilliant Sword
of Faith. What right do you have to keep it?

An Unhappy Paladin

I agree with most of your post, but you don't have to go to Splitpaw to check your faction, just /con the guy that you are giving the gold pieces to, he is on the same faction.
Groflah and Tykar not spawning HELP PLZ
# Dec 24 2000 at 6:17 PM Rating: Default
I am not very far into the quest yet, however I have ran into a problem.
I am at the part where you are suppose to meet Groflah at Seafarers Roost around 1-3am. Well he never shows up. I go to him give him the note he says to
meet him, I go and wait and no Groflah or the beggar Tykar. What gives?
I have attempted twice last night and both times he never showed up. Does he spawn at the bar or outside and where exactly does Tykar spawn? I would appreciate any help so I can go on with the quest. Thanks in advance.

OK this is the deal the whole groflah part i skipped completely the begger tykar spawned in for me by the bar post where the bar bends in the "L" shape. I didnt even talk to him i just started giving him the drom's. After 4 he gave me the blanket. I then left and preceeded to make my own bog juice and eddible goo since no one felt like helping me i wasted a guild practice on each and it took me 2 tries for each to be successful. I then went to the prison and didnt even hail "the prisoner" just gave him all three items at once and he gave me the key. this is as far as i've gotten. I had to wait about half an hour for tykar to spawn and didnt check the time (sorry) but its was during the day (bright out). I hope this helps.

I believe the beggar spawned for me around 9 or 10 AM, but to be on the safe side you should prepare to sit there all day and listen to the loser patrons babble on. I spend the day fishing and checking for him every hour.
