This solo task starts in Icefall Glacier with an NPC named Malgen, who is located in the caves closest to the port in area.

You say, 'Hail, Malgen'

Malgen says, 'Me say hail you. Me not [talk good] at you. but me try.'

You say, 'Talk good'

Malgen says, 'Me need to talk so you do things for mer. Me need you to go kill orc wolves. You [do that]?'

You say, 'I will do that'

You have been assigned the task, Thinning the Pack.

  • 1. Locate the haven of the Dire Wolf Elders

  • 2. Locate the haven of the Dire Wolves

  • 3. Kill 3 Elder Dire Wolves

  • 4. Kill 5 Dire Wolves

  • 5. Kill 2 Coldeye wolf tenders

  • 6. Speak with Malgen

The Dire Wolf Elders and the Dire wolves havens are both up near the
Valdeholm zone. Invised, you can run around and trigger the first 2 parts.
The wolves don't summon; nor do the wolf tenders. Kill them and return to
Malgen for your reward which is a familiar that looks like a shaman pet.

Your task 'Thinning the Pack' has been updated.

The loss of these wolves will put a damper on the orcish raids. The Kobold
livestock should be much safer with the dismantling of the pack.

    You gain experience!

    - Direwolf Totem of Spirit

Malgen is ready to attack on all my party members. Tried doing it invis as well as without. We get no response while invis, and we get insulted when un-invis. Anyone know what we need to do to get him to talk to us?

    Doesn't stack..

I did this quest last night hoping that the familiar cast would stack with Maelin's Meditation from my Girdle of Efficiency. This spell was blocked by Maelin's Meditation. =(

So although it looks cool to have a wolf by my side, the +6 mana regen and 20 dodge aren't worth it to me. I'd rather have the +8 mana regen, +8 regen from my Girdle of Efficiency.

I meant to check if I could still cast my hammer pets while the wolf familiar was up, but forgot to. I'll check it out the next time I'm on and re-post with the results.

Also, after we killed all the mobs in the Dire Wolf camp, a named (Grimjaw, Red con to 73) spawned with 4-5 adds. We got him down to about 10% before he wiped us. We would have made another attempt, but it was getting late and everyone wanted to finish the quest before logging. =(

20% dodge is well and above worth the loss of +2 mana regen. Especially with the new down time meditiation rate.
    2 quests for...

The 2 quests are for different classes.

One is for melees. One is for casters.

Malgen is in the caves with 2 trash mobs near him. However, you can use the rocks near him to be out of line of sight of them. Was able to position myself, drop invis and get the task without aggro.

Be careful when going near the elder dire wolves since some of them can see invis. The elder haven is at all of the elder wolves just down from the Valdeholm zone. You should be able to move around and get the task update easily.

The other haven is north and east of there. You will see an area with a lot of dire wolves. Didn't run across any see invis mobs here.

Both areas have roamers and you should be able to pick off mobs solo fairly easily.

OK scratch what I said about hiding in the rocks to hail. Seems you can do it while invis.

Direwolf Totem of Battle is actually obtained through the quest given by Pack Leader Orgak

    http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=22468

I posted a walkthrough on how to do it
    Incorrect - Not really

The zone has two different factions, orcs and gnolls. Both factions have quests with either similar or near similar rewards. This walkthru is correct and so was yours Kukick. I just depends on what faction you go with.

Totem of battle is not a reward for this quest. Only totem of spirit is.

Totem of battle come from a quest given by Pack Leader Orgak.

He wants you to take 3 meat, and go find the 3 caged wolf pups.

step 1 find 1st caged wolf.
step 2 give wolf pup meat.
step 3 find 1st caged wolf.
step 4 give wolf pup meat.
step 5 find 1st caged wolf.
step 6 give wolf pup meat.
step 7 speak with Pack Leader Orgak

steps 1,3, and 5 are visable. Once you fine them, steps 2,4 and 6 become visable corrilating to the caged wolf you find. IE 1 and 2, 3 and 4.

You need to break the cage to feed the wolf pup or it returns it saying, "You can't feed the pup with the cage in the way."
