This event begins with the slaying of Barducks Darkpaw.

Barducks Darkpaw's corpse shouts, 'A curse upon you pitiful manlings! Avenge me my brothers and raze their pathetic settlement! Ruin their land as they've ruined ours!'

Three waves of gnolls attack the town. The first wave consists of regular gnolls. The second (and third?) wave(s) consist of gnoll assassins which can drop class-specific quest pieces:

    Book of Gnollish Hymns
    Gnoll Dousing Rod
    Gnoll Oracle Medicine Bag
    Gnoll Pitfighter Gloves
    Gnoll Warriors Crest
    Gnollish Holy Symbol
    Runed Gnollish Tome

Here's the emote where all the villagers despawn and respawn as the war event versions of themselves :

The sound of war drums echo through the forest and a rough inhuman voice calls out a war cry. 'Brothers, now is the time of our revenge! Destroy the human settlement and claim it as our own! For Barducks and clan Darkpaw!'

If you keep at least Sergeant Caelin alive, all the gnolls despawn (even while fighting them) and this message happens:

Sergeant Caelin shouts, 'It appears the gnolls have been routed but at what a cost? Many of the innocents I have sworn to protect have perished this day. Karana forgive my dreadful failure. If you can show me that you assisted in defense of the fort, you shall be compensated.'

When handing in the quest items :

Sergeant Caelin says, 'You are brave and a valiant one, _____. Alas, the people whom I have been sworn to protect have been mostly wiped out. Take this as a token of my gratitude for your assistance today.'

Ok so here's Barduck dying and starting the event :

[Fri Aug 11 21:24:36 2017] Barducks Darkpaw's corpse shouts, 'A curse upon you pitiful manlings! Avenge me my brothers and raze their pathetic settlement! Ruin their land as they've ruined ours!'

here's the emote where all the villagers despawn and respawn as the war event versions of themselves :

[Fri Aug 11 21:29:24 2017] The sound of war drums echo through the forest and a rough inhuman voice calls out a war cry. 'Brothers, now is the time of our revenge! Destroy the human settlement and claim it as our own! For Barducks and clan Darkpaw!'

If you keep at least Sergeant Caelin alive, all the gnolls despawn (even while fighting them) and this message happens:

[Fri Aug 11 21:44:16 2017] Sergeant Caelin shouts, 'It appears the gnolls have been routed but at what a cost? Many of the innocents I have sworn to protect have perished this day. Karana forgive my dreadful failure. If you can show me that you assisted in defense of the fort, you shall be compensated.'

When handing in the quest items they all give the same message :

[Fri Aug 11 21:44:23 2017] Sergeant Caelin says, 'You are brave and a valiant one, _____. Alas, the people whom I have been sworn to protect have been mostly wiped out. Take this as a token of my gratitude for your assistance today.'
[Fri Aug 11 21:44:23 2017] Your faction standing with Residents of Jaggedpine has been adjusted by 10.
[Fri Aug 11 21:44:23 2017] Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk has been adjusted by 5.
[Fri Aug 11 21:44:23 2017] Your faction standing with Protectors of Pine has been adjusted by 5.
[Fri Aug 11 21:44:23 2017] Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos has been adjusted by 1.
[Fri Aug 11 21:44:23 2017] You gain party experience!

    reward that wasn't listed :
[Fri Aug 11 21:44:40 2017] You say, 'Elixir of Promise'

came from the gnollish holy symbol hand-in

Also I believe I only had Sergeant Caelin alive at the end, it seems like his text and rewards will be different if more villagers live

    Cloth Cord of Mourning

I killed Barducks, and about ten minutes later, the town folk repopped per tracking. The gnolls started to attack. Former merchants and the banker were no longer right clickable for a merchant/banker window. There were three waves of gnolls, the first wave was only 'a gnoll' and about ten total. The second wave was a little smaller, and at least one 'a gnoll assassin' The third wave was smaller still, and at least one gnoll assassin. All the town folk died, except one, and sadly the seargent died. Note: I had one runner on the first wave, and the second wave didn't start until I tracked him down and killed him. Loot was some plat from all the gnolls killed, three "Runed Gnollish Tome", one 'gnoll pitfighter gloves' and one 'gnollish holy symbol'. I got at least one of these items from the second wave.

From What I saw, the gnolls attack specific towns folk, and when the town person is dead, the gnolls stand around waiting for something to happen, but don't seem to move on to other targets. My strategy next time will be to protect Sarge (it helps to know this ahead of time). When attacks on him cease, then go round up all the other gnolls.

The gnolls could be attacked and would loose aggro on the humans, and follow me around. The humans didn't follow the gnolls around once I dragged the gnoll off. Once I had a bunch of gnolls following me, Hail of Arrows worked well at softening them up.

I waited for the town folk to repop, and tried to do the turn in for the items I mentioned above, to Sergeant Caelin. He returned them to me saying he had no use for them. I suspect this is a different version of the sarge, and therefore not able to give the reward. Alternatively, I was turning in items which are not for my class. Maybe if I didn't camp, killed Barducks tomorrow, and waited for the townfolk to repop as quest mobs I could do the turn in then. Considering the reward is kind of useless at level 75, I don't think I will be doing that.

Sgt Caelin would take my gnoll items for "of Mourning" lefsser rewards. He would not take Gnoll Canines during this phase. I agree he seems to be in a different mode during/after the event.
