This flags you to start the quest for the epic 1.5 if you do not have the Scythe of the Shadowed Soul (necromancer epic 1.0).

Find Geboron in the Plane of Knowledge at -860, +305.

You say, 'Hail, Geboron'

Geboron says 'Yes. . . ______ is it? I have heard of you. I am Geboron, assistant to Kazen. It is most fortunate for you that you happened upon me. I have a task that is of the utmost importance and I believe I can trust you with it. There has been talk recently among my brethren of a most powerful staff that was recently discovered in the realm of discord and is now in the hands of a group of paladins. However my undead servants have informed me that the paladins were transporting the staff through the Karanas and suddenly disappeared without a trace. I want you to find my contact, Yuanda in West Karana and give her this note. It says you are working for me now. Find out what happened to those paladins and the staff! If you find out anything, talk to my assistant, Egonis in Lake Rathe.'

You receive a Note to Yuanda. Take it to Yuanda in West Karana.

Yuanda reads the note. 'So you are working for Geboron? Yes I have seen the paladins and the staff they were guarding. They passed through here just one day ago. From what I have been told, they were attacked by a pack of werewolves. All of the paladins were killed and one of the werewolves took the staff. If you want the staff you will need to find these werewolves. Oh, no! Here they come now! I am getting out of here!'

Five of "a snarling werewolf spawn." Four are level 67-68, hit for 600, are mezzable but immune to melee, and summon. One is 69+, hits for 1200 (and this increases as its health drops), is unmezzable and is magic-resistant. You have 30 minutes to kill them all. Once they're all dead, the last one says...

'Your attack was in vain, fool. The staff was stolen from us by a bandit only hours ago.'

Shady Bandit spawns at about -3975, -10930, -5 (under a tree at the river, south side of the zone). Hail him and he will attack. He's level 67 or 68, hits for around 1200, has a 950 lifetap proc, and is snareable. Once he's dead, loot a Contract of Sale. Take this to Egonis in Lake Rathetear at +2455, -655.

Egonis says 'So the foolish brigand sold the staff to Ronaiar, eh? Who is Ronaiar? He is an insane necromancer that makes his home somewhere near the lake. I had a feeling he would try to get his hands on the staff. That is why I came out here. I must inform Kazen of this turn of events and you must destroy that decrepit fool, Ronaiar. If you find the staff, give it to Geboron.'

Go to the aviak island to find Ronaiar Skullmoore at +2695, +1005.

You say, 'Hail, Ronaiar Skullmoore'

Ronaiar Skullmoore says 'So you have come to stop me?' Ronaiar throws a magnificent, yet evil looking staff into the water. 'The precious staff you seek is now lost in the lake for all eternity!'

He attacks. He's level 68, hits for around 1000, and dies rather quickly to a single group. The corpse is empty, but in the water near where he died, you'll find a goblin named Worboli at +3000, +1005, -227.

You say, 'Hail, Worboli'

Worboli says 'Yes, yes, looking for the staff are yous? We can tell. We does see a staff but yous must [do somethings] for us first, yes?'

Hail Worboli again.

You say, 'I will do somethings.'

Worboli says 'The gnolls tooks something that was mines. They tooks my fish. It was nice and rotten, yes it was. Yous finds my rotten fish and maybe we can tell about the staff.'

Now a Gnoll Scavenger (level 68) will spawn on the aviak island at +2260, +950, -16. It hits for 1100 and rampages, but should be doable by a single group. You loot a Rotten Fish.

When you go to give the fish to Worboli, he's not there. In his place is a Man-Eating Freshwater Shark, which hits for 800 at the beginning and up to 1200 near death. Once it's dead, loot a Piece of the Staff.

Head back to the Plane of Knowledge and give this to Geboron.

Geboron says 'I ask you to find a staff of great power and you bring me this??! A piece of the staff? You are an incompetent fool! Take this trash back and give it to Kazen so that he may punish you as he sees fit! Begone!'

Kazen Fecae may be found at +350, -1550 near Lake Rathetear. Give him the Piece of the Staff.

Kazen Fecae says 'Geboron has told me that you would be giving this piece of the staff to me. Do not fear. While I am not angry with you for failing to bring me the staff, I am not thoroughly pleased either. However, this piece could hold the key to discovering the staff's whereabouts. I wish to research this staff piece but first I need some special research tools. Take this note and travel to Steamfont. Find a gnome named Biddliss Sperandu and give him the note. When you obtain the research tools hand them to me.'

You receive a Note to Biddliss. Congratulations, you have completed the pre-quest.

Confirming November 2021, this is still bugged. The yellow-to-70 werewolf is the only one you have to kill to get the Shady Bandit to spawn and he is best summon tanked to avoid the 11k kick.

The blue-to-70s are mezzable and can be blurred once the yellow wolf is dead.

I would say that is a bug and shouldn't be kicking for that much. Not during Omens of War era.

Bring a tank that can withstand a 11k kick. Each werewolf was also randomly kicking for upwards of 10k+. I don't feel like this was emphasized enough in previous posts. Not sure if it was because we split them up or what, but keep it in mind before you attempt this fight.

You must hail Worboli before saying 'I will do somethings' or the Gnoll Scavenger will not spawn.

Thanks for posting. This is a good post as it gives context and useful information that lets other players set goals (or at least budget their time).

Level 60 Necro, defiant geared. Started the prequest yesterday evening, and finished it shortly. Had the help of a 83 Ranger, mostly. We boxed a 75 chanter and 80+ shammy along for the werewolves fight. Ranger track helps a bit for finding these mobs. Yuanda was not on his track though. Shady Bandit wasn't at first, but picked up on him shortly after making it out of the hills where Yuanda stood. All other spawns were on track after that. We did have two mercs with us as well, one tank, one healer.

As the necro, I FD'd immediately after turning in the Note to Yuanda in West Karana, the werewolves spawned IMMEDIATELY; didn't get a hit in on Necro once. Ranger used range weapon entire time, boxed chanter to aoe mez, pretty much chain mezzed. Aggro stayed on tank merc. The werewolves did summon the chanter QUITE FREQUENTLY. But didn't hurt him much because aggro would go immeidately back to tank merc.
A couple minutes into fight, stood necro up and started twitching merc healer; which was not a problem. Merc healer ended up pretty much full mana when all was done. We didn't want aggro on my necro, since I'm only level 60. So, didn't do much fighting until the last mob; blasted the heck out of the last mob. Only resisted poison dot. Only took a few minutes to kill all werewolves. No one even came near death. Was a fun fight.
I found all of the above to be true, regarding what the werewolves resist, as far as melee, mezz etc go. There was only one unmezzable.

Shady bandit was under a tree by the river, southern area of zone; right where he should have been. I hailed, FD'd...as fast as I could. He rampaged on me immediately. No problem though, merc healer healed me, I stood up and the fight was almost over...he did start to walk away when low on health. Snare landed.

On to Lake Rathetear we headed. Really only used Ranger and Necro for this part. All spawns were on track, and in correct locations. Easy peasy.
Ronaiar Skullmoore went down easy.
Worboli was in water where he should be, at the bottom of the lake. Worked on those swimming skills...
Gnoll Scavenger taken out with Ranger HS. Lol
I saw on previous comments that sometimes Worboli was spawned with the Man-eating Shark when coming back to turn rotten fish in. Last night I can tell you, he was not. Got to keep the rotten fish, and move on. Took down the Man-eating shark easy.

Did the last two turn ins, got my Note to Bidliss. :)

I spent several days camping the ores and hinge, before asking a guildmate for help with the werewolves and so on. I did the pre-quest, turned in the ores, and gave the drawing of rune to Ruandia. She told me she wrote some instructions, exactly as described on the page for the main quest. But she did not give me any instructions.

Update: they refunded the drawing and it worked on the second try. Onward to Tabarin and Viarglug, if nothing else goes wrong.

"When you go to give the fish to Worboli, he's not there. In his place is a Man-Eating Freshwater Shark"

Actually, Worboli can be up, witht the shark. When you give him the fish he says:

Worboli says 'My fish! Yes my best rotten fish. You has done good. I sees your staff. I was swimmings here and a staff fall to bottom of lake. But that not be all! You sees, there was a big, big, big shark cames along and bit the staff into pieces! I think that did cause some bad magics to happen! A big whirlpool did appear and the staff disappeared! That did scare the shark away! That is all that I knows.'

At 83 with a Healer Merc, I found the easiest way to handle the Werewolves solo was to:

- pull to the zone line
- zone out into the North Karanas
- run south a decent ways to be outside Aggro range
- zone back into West Karanas
- snare a single werewolf and run South to separate him from the group
- zone into North Karanas
- run north to be ABOVE the aggro range of the snared werewolf
- solo the single werewolf until dead
- run down to the waiting group of werewolves
- snare one and head North until the group is separated from the snared one
- zone into North Karanas
- repeat until all wolves are dead.

I found this part MUCH easier than I had anticipated and all of the other fights were easy with pet and Healer Merc.

Good luck!

Necro 1.5 pre-quest notes
# Jul 28 2009 at 6:49 PM Rating: Decent
84 Necro here, with healer merc.

I used all my poison spells. Never got snare/darkness to work at all.

1. Snarling werewolves were too much for my 84 necro to solo. Grabbed a Mage and Enchanter friend and took em down no problem. 100 percent casting, melee DOES NOT WORK. Thorns are ok.

They had lots of HP, had to watch my mana.

2. Shady Bandit pops afterward so no waiting. Don't stop the quest yet.
He didn't pop where the quest says. I saw him South of the bandit camp by the river. Easy Kill

You can pause the quest here. Come back later.

3. Rest of the mobs were pretty easy. Worboli was out a ways, helps to go to the location specified rather then swim around looking.

ok finished whole quest and noticed this:
-snarling werewolves (all the lower ones) could be hit with any dot. big one only cud be hit with splurt and fire.
-skullmoore couldnt be dotted at all
-scavenger couldnt be dotted
-man eating could be but no fire.
exact time limit on wolves
# Jul 16 2009 at 1:13 PM Rating: Decent
Well, I have attempted twice today. I took a timer, and popped wolves to see how long it would be before poof. Turned out 25 minutes exactly. just to tell anyone who cares its 25 mins exactly.
Easy epic
# Jan 24 2009 at 8:19 PM Rating: Decent
The easy way to do the werewolves:

- grab a mage friend and head to West Karana

- set up mage with pet about 50' feet away and have a healer merc out

- necro hands in note and immediately FDs so the werewolves don't attack

- mage CoH's necro out of the werewolves aggro radius

- necro then uses the non-damaging AA snare to pull one of the lower con wolves; they will all come running. Get some distance and then FD. The werewolves will stay exactly where you leave them. Mage CoH's the necro again.

- rinse and repeat until all of the werewolves are seperated from one another. Then pull them one at a time and kill them off. Burn the lower lvl ones down with dots and then use damage shields on pets to kill the higer lvl conned werewolf. Took me 10-15 minutes to do it this way, no deaths and no real risk involved.

Nothing at all is tough about this pre-quest nowadays, and with my necro/mage I was able to 2 box the whole prequest/ 1.5/ 2.0 with exception on Tarlang and the orb from anguish. GL on this quest fellow necros, one of the easier epics to get,

easy solo.

reptile before hand in.

ae root on aggro and move out quickly before DS drops them below 97%.

pell to single.

fernspike/nbw/sunscorch kills them fast and easy.

*if* you ***** up like i did, and damage them all, then evac and come back and bind a short distance away, reptile yourself then stack 6 or 7 ds's, pop direwood or glyph, pull with nbw, adren/survival to stay alive, evac when both are greyed out, gate back , rinse and repeat. after the hard 1 dies they can be easily tanked @20khp 3k ac and no more evaccing will be required. dont attempt regular heals, they hit to fast, and you waste valuable seconds.

but all in all , just dont ***** up and get them under 97% and it's trivial. it would arguably be worth it to remove standard ds's on pull so as to avoid putting them into summon mode. if they hit you for more then 2 or 3 seconds they will be under 97%.

was 35ish mana at end if fight.

Names are correct for the Gnoll and the Shark. You must hail the gnoll to get it aggro'd, pets won't attack until you do so. All mabs are extremely resistant to a 68 necro... annulled 3 times to land dots... did it with a 70 ish druid and a 75 mage with elemental pets aa. Cake walk
Fights after the first fight.

The fights after the first fight are pretty easy. That said when my friend and Guild finshed with first two fights of the prequest, he and i wanted to finish it . So we went he necro 75 and myself paladin lvl 75. I healed self and he doted down and threw pet in. In all the fights we were but when fighting the shark we came close to bitting the bullet. On more to help like a druid or a healer friend would have helped alot and make all of it easy. As it was we did finish and he is now started on his epic proper :) Grats be cautious. My palladin had 13k after buffs started drping and i got bout 2400 ac .
Fights after the first fight.

First fight Strat:

Get Enchanter to AE mez the mobs. One or two will not get mez . Make sure all get mezzed but the highest lvl mob that cannot be mezzed. let ench die far from group or if you can run and zone out. Main mob can be slowed, after slow burn it w/ panther and/or Necro life tap and ... easy fight after split...

Just a quick update from doing the first fight in West Karana. The werewolves do summon. There was nothing in the write up mentioning that nifty tid bit and we ended up wiping a few times because if this. Make sure you bring a heavy compliment of nukers, tanks, and clerics along for the ride to this fight.
