This group monster mission begins with Kathi Norman in the Commonlands. She can be found at +1102 +415.
You say, 'Hail, Kathi Norman' Kathi Norman says 'Hello yourself. Unfortunately, there isn't anything to be [happy] about today.' You say, 'Happy?' Kathi Norman says 'I'm sorry. I found a broken griffin egg and a trinket of sorts next to it. Next thing I knew I was.. Well, it's too weird to explain. If you like I can offer the [trinket] to you as well.' You have been assigned the task 'A Griffin's Plight'. Your group can select from two monster types: Featherclaw Griffin (Druid) and Sharptalon Griffin (Ranger). Once you've selected templates you can zone into the instance. You say, 'Trinket?' LOADING, PLEASE WAIT... You have entered East Commonlands: A Griffin's Plight. Kathi Norman is at the zone-in point and will port you out if you ask her to: You say, 'Hail, Kathi Norman' Kathi Norman says 'If you find yourself in a hurry to [leave], just let me know and away you go!' Locate your missing eggs 0/10 (East Commonlands) To get these updates you need to "fly over" an egg. Once done successfully the egg will disappear and another will spawn elsewhere. (Note the task may not update itself until the 10th egg is done.) Eggs appear near buildings/camps, or else near the fringes of the desert west of the undead camp or along the eastern side of the zone. Yellow and red-con mobs will begin appearing on track and are indicators of egg locations. Among them are higher level players, each with a very large aggro radius (about a quarter of the zone). Once the eggs are found you'll have two targets to find and kill. Find Guard Tygos 0/1 (East Commonlands) Guard Tygos spawns near "Inn 1". Kill Guard Tygos 0/1 (East Commonlands) Guard Tygos hits for a max 161 or so and flurries. You'll want full health and mana for this fight. Find Merchant Wendell 0/1 (East Commonlands) Kill Merchant Wendell 0/1 (East Commonlands) Merchant Wendell drops 6x "Shard of Wisdom" (you must have this in order to get experience). Speak with Kathi Norman 0/1 (East Commonlands) Hail Kathi for experience and task completion. The common loot is Anodized Mithril Vambraces, while the rare loot is Sparkling Necklace of Joy. Anodized Mithril Vambraces (ARTIFACT) can transmute to: Anodized Mithril Vambraces (level 1-10) ???? (level 11-20) Colorless Plate Arms (level 21-30) Repaired Plate Arms (level 31-40) Clear Resin-Covered Plate Arms (level 41-50) Ornate Plate Arms (level 51-60) Decorated Plate Arms (level 61-70) Sparkling Necklace of Joy (ARTIFACT) can transmute to: Sparkling Necklace of Joy (level 1-10) ???? (level 11-20) Ashen Neckguard of the Wind (level 21-30) Somber Neckguard of Hostility (level 31-40) Decorated Neckguard (level 41-50) Fiery Ornate Neckguard (level 51-60) Relucent Neckguard of Remorse (level 61-70) Unrelated to the task, some shouts and emotes from within the zone: Goldenblade shouts 'Don't kill bixies! You'll spawn griffins!' Wichi shouts 'Has anyone seen my corpse?' Kitinu shouts 'Griffin near Inn!' Luna shouts 'Price check on PGT!' Fingerslaru shouts 'How do I get to Qeynos? I'm lost!' Baddrood shouts 'Need SoW for corpse run...' Faffird shouts 'Selling Dervish Rings at tunnel! Also have spider silk for 1P a stack!' Ilight shouts 'Can I have some plat?' Wichi shouts 'You suck! Stop KSing my beetles!' Hiatha shouts 'EverQuest has defeated Yoursociallife in a duel to the death!' Kaane shouts 'OMG some wizard named Fiflenoggin just ninja looted a ghoulbane from a group of paladins in Lower Guk!' Skeletoor shouts 'Selling everything on me at tunnel. PST for list and price!' Baddrood shouts 'Ding! Level 7!' Wichi shouts 'Ding! Level 8!' Sloerz shouts 'Ding! Level 4!' Wichi shouts 'WTB BBC PST' Skeletoor shouts 'Looking for group! PST!' And sometimes upon attacking a lower level player, they'll turn around and flee, shouting: Connaan shouts 'Griff inc to Freeport! Look out newbs!' | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

1) After hailing Kathi, select one of two monsters, either a ranger, or druid. Four people should choose the ranger option and two should be the druid because dps does help speed things along in the end.
2) Port in and get your skills and AAs inline. The rangers should use the Lesion and Stinging Swarm spells as this increases their dps quite a bit. The druids should have their heal, immolate, and snare up. Nothing else really makes a difference.
3) There will be two eggs up initially. I know this for a fact as I have had both in the first two spawn points where I can see them at the same time. The eggs have specific spawn points that they will randomly spawn in, including one just down in front of where you zoned in. After checking that spot, I start a racetrack pattern heading west. The general spawn points and order are as follows:
-The first orc camp you come to
-First group of inns
-Second orc camp
Turn left here (edge of zone) and head south
-Open area ahead and to the left of where you just made your 90 degree turn
-Next to small group of trees right before you hit the desert area
Turn left here again
-Immediately up a small green hill next to desert area
-Just past this hill in an open area right where the desert area starts
You should be heading east over the desert area now
-The broken down druid rings
-Just north of the druid rings next to a tall tree
Keep going east
-Over the fisrt hill past the druid rings, one next to a large tree and one just south of the tree half-way up the next hill
-Start vearing about 30 degrees to the north and make your way back to the green area (a group of inns and guard hut will be on your left)
-Right next to a large tree that has a small branchling growing out of its base
-Open spot just west of where you are
Turn about 45 degrees to the right and start heading south-east again
-Next to a tree that sits on a small hill just south of the next set of inns
-Just north of that same set of inns (need to head north again to see it)
Make sure you are heading due east with the third set of inns passing on your right
-Right next to a small single inn straight ahead
-Slight northeast of that same single inn, in the sandy area just short of the Freeport zoneline.
4) There is a special way to collect the eggs that make this much quicker. With everyone auto-following one person, the leader should fly just to the right or left of the egg in what appears to be about 30ft to the side. Once the leader loses sight of the egg on their screen, they should swing around towards the egg. This should bring the group of 5 directly over the egg at the same time. If done correctly, you only need to find the first two eggs on the racetrack. I can sometimes get credit for six at a time by bringing my leader back to the egg very quickly.
Note: If any player or group of players has aggro from something, ie skeletons or zombies, they will not get credit for the egg. What typically happens is that I will trail my group too close to a skele over the desert area and they will get aggro, but my leader will not. Thus, only my leader gets credit for the egg (1 out 10).
5) After looting the second egg, whether you get full credit for it or not, the first group of four "newbs" will spawn and begin trying to collect eggs. The next two eggs will also spawn somewhere in the zone on the racetrack pattern. The newbs are yellow con, and they always seem to know where the eggs are as they start walking/running directly for them. They will also aggro to you if you get too close. One of the two eggs will also have a mob/mobs spawned with them. These can be either a curious spider, kodiak, griffin, snake, group of skeles, or group of orc gatherers. All but the orcs are KoS and will cause the aggro problems mentioned before if you try and loot the egg that they are on. The other egg does not have a mob with it. If I need a third egg, I simply retrace my race-track pattern looking for the egg without a mob. The newb group will always go the one with the mobs so we all stay out of each other's way in this manner.
6) Sometimes it takes four eggs to get credit for all ten. In this case you need to start worrying about a second newb group or "kos group". This group will spawn around the 15 minute mark and head straight for you and try and kill your group. They can be tough as a whole as they are also yellow-con mobs.
7) After getting all ten eggs, Guard Tygus will spawn with an emote. He spawns in front of "Inn 1" at /loc P200 P60. He is non KoS. Pull him with whoever is the designated tank using Stinging Swarm and run him to the nearby inn that has a plague flag up (/loc P640 P980). Gang up on him and kill him here. Rangers should use stinging swarm and druids should use immolate on him. Druids snare and heal tank. He hits fairly hard and fast so druids need to be focused with heals.
8) after Tygus is dead, Merchant Wendell spawns immediately inside the small inn next to you. Hail her to aggro her, then cast stinging swarm and run her east back up the hill to where you spawned next to Kathi (this is a safe area that the KoS group of newbs will generally not follow you to). Kill her here and then loot shards of wisdom. Once everyone has a shard, hail Kathi to get credit and exp, and then say "leave" to get out.
I have done this mission at least several hundred times gaining about 10-15 levels for many of wife and I's toons and several hundred AAs. The fastest I have done it is 8 minutes, the slowest about 25. Sometimes the collecting just doesn't go well and I end up needing 5-6 eggs with the second newb group chasing me around the zone. Hope this helps others use this mission.
After you kill the Innkeeper (and loot the shard of wisdom), you must go to Kathi and HAIL her to get the experience!
- The eggs are almost as tall as a human character; you'll have no trouble recognizing them.
- to 'collect' the eggs you have to fly over them, and they will disappear. It may take several passes to get them to disappear - I've collected some the first pass, others I have had to fly over 6 or 8 times. Frustrating, but you'll get it eventually. (You may get 1-2 griffin eggs off mobs; I don't think they are good for anything. I never did anything with the ones I looted.)
- when the eggs disappear, there is no message that your task has been updated.' Don't worry, it isn't bugged - you'll get credit
- There is one egg 'in play' at a time; collect one, another one will pop up somewhere. If you can't find one, killing newbies (though fun) won't make an egg spawn. If you can't find it that just means that you haven't looked in the right place yet
- eggs appear near buildings/camps, or else near the fringes of the desert west of the undead camp or along the eastern side of the zone. So that means that you have to be prepared to do a long racetrack to find each egg from Orc 2 in the west, all the way to the eastern zone line
- as noted below, if a red monster (other than a griffin) shows up on track, head to it - it will have an egg. Sometimes the one of the yellow/red player mobs will sit on an egg as well.
- the yellow/red player mobs seem to spawn in waves. After killing them all off there were none for about 30 minutes when four suddenly spawned again. Not sure of exact timing
- the yellow/red players have a large agro radius, maybe a quarter of the zone - i.e., you *must* take care of them before you do the Guard Tygus or Merchant Wendell fights to avoid adds.
- If you die, you will come back by 'Kathi' on the north wall between the Nektulos zone-line and Orc 1. If you are having trouble with the yellow/red player mobs, try to get train them as far away from there as possible, in order to avoid a death loop where they will immediately agro on a griffin as it respawns.
Since this is a 'find the item' type mission, you can do with a small group almost as easily as with a full group. I three-box it in an hour and a half; a full group could probably do it in under an hour by splitting up to look for eggs. The only tricky part is the yellow/red player characters - when you get four, taking them on with only three griffins can be a challenge. One strategy which I have found works is to set up a warrior and a healer griffin by the edge of the desert; the third griffin gets aggro on the player mobs, and leads them past the other two. The two griffins in wait then pick off a yellow/red mob each time that the train goes by. The red players aren't too hard single, other than the chanter character. With only three characters, you will want the healer to be full mana for the Guard Tygus fight, though.

Solo is the default setting until someone tells us otherwise. Changed this MM's info to reflect that it requires a group.
Step 1: find 10 of your missing eggs, sometimes people shout they looted one have to track down fake PC's kill them and loot egg.
Step 2: Find Guard Tygos
Step 3: Kill Guard Tygos
Step 4: Find Merchant Wendell
Step 5: Kill Merchant Wendell Loot Egg for turn in, Shard of Wisdom and Gear drop, give egg to Kathi Norman.
5% regular Xp at level 69.

Are you ready to DIE???
Eventually, you'll see red mobs appearing on track. They'll have names like "enraged grizzly bear" and such. They spawn in a place and don't wander, and there's always an egg under them. You don't have to kill them to loot it, you can pull them away.
When the groups of players "camping" eggs appear, try to gang up on them. They come in groups usually of 2 or 3, but generally have casters and are difficult to kill unless you have at least as many griffins as there are players.
Both times I did this MM it took something like an hour and a half, and the EXP (pre-PoR nerf) was I think a bit less than one AA, so it's really not worth doing for the EXP, but if you know someone who wants the arms it's fairly easy and anyone who was playing EQ "back in the day" should play it just for the ability to kill newbs with stupid (hence realistic) names like "Healzalot" hear them shouting about how stupid Verant (yes they mention Verant) is to put griffins in the zone.
EDIT: Well after an hour I found an egg, it turned out to be 4 eggs. I guess they spawned on top of each other. Went looking around for another 45 minutes or so and didn't find anymore. /taskend

You have to kill the final red spawn mob "a rival griffon" to get Kathi Norman to spawn.

This is the highest reward, don't know what it would be at lower lvls.
Three stages:
Collect 10 eggs (just run over them)
Kill the guard who stole an egg
Talk to (and kill) the merchant the guard sold it to.
The eggs do not start on the map. They spawn, and I couldn't detect any sequencing. Just keep running around and looking. Mark known spawn points on your map for repeat missions.
Red mobs or "orc gatherers" will spawn. The gatherers are nonagressive, but the red mobs are mean. Both are good indicators of egg positions so use your tracking. Gang up and kill the reds or use a decoy and loot the egg that they guard (just run over it.)
As time passes, dark blue NPCs start spawning at the Freeport zone line and begin searching for the eggs and you. If possible, use someone to drag them in a circle about the zone, so that the the rest of your team can get the eggs. You can kill the NPCs as they spawn at the Freeport zone line, but they respawn, so probably not worth it.
The NPCs talk in ooc. They'll tell you when they are camping an egg, and when they are taking it to Freeport. Don't let them get to Freeport. Too many eggs taken away loses the mission. If you kill them, you can loot the egg they carry.
After 10 eggs are found, you must kill the guard (red) and then the merchant (yellow). Use track to find them. The NPCs should still be chasing you. Try and keep them away from your fight.
The guard is tough. You'll need 3 players, at least one ranger on him. If he kills your attack force, he heals fully. Aftyer the guard, the merchant is cake.
Reward I've seen:
Decorated Plate Arms (level 65+ version)

Noted egg epawn locations:
Orc 2 (NW corner)
Hidden Inn (near north wall)
Undead Camp (near south wall)
Ponila (weapons merchant near Freeport)
I have not seen any inside the tunnels to North Ro.
