This is the first task in a series of five (the end result being your 70th level spell/tome) and begins with Jarzarrad the Prophet who can be found in Undershore at -960, +650.

You say, 'Hail, Jarzarrad the Prophet'

Jarzarrad the Prophet says 'I know why you are here, _____.' He nods as you approach. 'I have known why you'd be here since before you were born. You are the _____ who will learn the secrets of [Shadowspine].'

You say, 'Shadowspine?'

Jarzarrad the Prophet says 'Yessss, Shadowspine. . . The drachnid book of the dead. . . The tome stolen by the Shiliskin Empire during the War of Four Crests. Shadowspine corrupted Emperor Draygun and drove him mad with the promise of power. Ultimately, Draygun's study of the tome led him to unleash terrible magic in Illsalin which turned him into a lich and bound the fallen warriors of two armies, both drachnid and shiliskin, to his will. You may not even know of Shadowspine yet. . . But you will. . . Let me know when you are [ready] to trace your fate.'

You say, 'I am ready.'

Jarzarrad the Prophet says 'So be it. Here is what you must do.'

There are two versions of this task: Normal and hard. The only difference between them is the quality of loot and difficulty of mobs.

You have been assigned the task 'Preemptive Strike'.

Before it fell to ruins, Illsalin served as capital of the Shiliskin Empire. The city's streets now lay broken and befouled with Draygun's undead thralls. The few surviving shiliskin refugees have retreated to Malgrinnor, the fortified outpost along the Undershore.

The first thing you must do is weaken Draygun before confronting him directly. Sneak into Illsalin and find where Draygun keeps his living shiliskin captives and then kill them. Draygun needs their life essence to sustain what is left of his wasting body. By killing his energy supply, you are weakening Draygun himself.

When you finally have depleted Draygun's energy supply, you will be ready for a more direct attack on the city itself.



Enter the Nargilor Pits of Illsalin 0/1 (Ruins of Illsalin)

Zone into The Nargilor Pits, an instance off the eastern side of the Ruins of Illsalin (location: -749.69, -1324.27, 57.20).

Find the Living Shiliskin Captives 0/1 (The Nargilor Pits)

Kill 10 Captured Shilgrave Legion Soldiers 0/10 (The Nargilor Pits)

Clear your way to "an ornate chest," which spawns in a random location, usually a rather inconvenient one. One location is southwest of the zone-in, in an underwater pool surrounded by mobs. Another possible location is in the trap. Inside this chest is a Carved Nargil Triangle, a key which opens the door at the opposite end of the pit.

Next, clear your way to the Guardian of the Pit (random in level 71-73) due south of the zone-in. You will need to kill it to safely pass through the locked door behind it. There is nothing overly difficult about the fight. If you can handle trash, you should be able to handle the guardian.

Once you have killed it and unlocked the door, moving into the room will pass the second task stage above.

Finally, you must pull and kill 10 x "a Shilgrave XXX" from the room behind the door, where "a Shilgrave XXX" may be a hard-hitting regular mob or a regular mob that transforms into "a Shilgrave shade," an even tougher version of the same mob.

Once this is done, you will see:

A clatter sounds throughout the hall as your fleeing enemies drop a treasure chest near the entryway.

Your task 'Preemptive Strike' has been updated.

A glittering warchest spawns at the zone-in with loot, which may be one of the following:

Darkcoral Bracer (hard)
Dead Water Ring (normal)
Deepskin Arms (hard)
Fen Link Vest (hard)
Fishgil Stone (normal)
Illsalin Enforcer Bracer (normal)
Illsalin Enforcer Helmet (hard)
Shimmer Scale (normal)

Return to Jarzarrad with News of Your Victory 0/1 (Undershore)

Head back to Jarzarrad.

You say, 'Hail, Jarzarrad the Prophet'

Your task 'Preemptive Strike' has been updated.

Jarzarrad the Prophet says 'Welcome back. It appears that Emperor Draygun's power will wane for want of sustenance. Let Jarzarrad know when you are [ready] to venture back into Illsalin.'

Completing this mission unlocks the next mission in the series, "Praetorian Guard".

Do you have to do these tasks (70.1-70.5) in sequential order to get the level 70 spell or do you just have to complete them all in any order?

Did mission again and chest was not in expected locations - this go was in water on opposite side with 3 mobs sitting on top of it - apparently it can pop all over the zone.

We had a helm drop from this mission's chest(hard version) the other day. Unfortunately I didn't win it, will be doing this quite a few times to get it =(

I can confirm the Stun, but it seemed to be single target (On tank). Every shaded didnt have this though from the looks of it, i got 1 out of 10 which stunned me 2 times, and thats it.

Did this the other day with myself (70 paladin, 10.6khp, 1800 AC) and a 67 cleric, 70 shammy, 70 druid, 70 ranger, and 70 mage. We were right at the envelope of being able to do this.

Dropped off of a non-named mob in the normal version off the mission. Not out of the chest or off a named, suspect that it's a random trash drop. Looted by accident and didn't even know it had stats until I tried to sell it to a vendor. :p

Dropped for us tonight on the normal mission. And WTH...not warrior useable?!?!?!

I think the posted rewards may be backwards. We did the normal mission and received the following:

Definately makes more sense that the hard reward is respective augs and not the crap loot.

Groupsetup: ENC PAL PAL CLR DUI ROG all Lvl 70 time geared

Played hard version. All mobs con yellow. Hit for 1,4 at 2500 AC all def AAs set. 90% of mobs are undead.

Move invis to RoI zone in and to the left you will find the Instance Zone.
ZI of Instance is save. From ZI you will get a T-crossing at which is trap to the pit - so keep to the left. There are see invis mobs in zone. No repop

First task is - get key - you will find it in the pit lefthand side from ZI.

There are 3-4 roamers and 2 stationary mobs. Clear to the left while staying at ZI. Continue clearing the first tunnel to the left. then move in room behind tunnel - clear down to chest and loot key.

Return to ZI and start clearing the way down to the named. More than 2 mobs are very hard to handle - they hit hard and fast. Getting the last 2 mobs before named is tricky. We had to evade several times (that's why we stayed at ZI) and had some casualties.

Don't move down to kill named at his spot - unless you have cleared all mobs - what we did not do - we pulled named to ZI. He hits for 2,5k max - clr ch chain and druid patch heals.

Open door behind named spot and clear entrance of a wide hall. Move to hall entrance - and wipe *g* as we did. You have to kill 10 mobs from hall - they are lying FD on the floor and there are trashmobs around - single pulls are tricky.

The task mobs change at 90% to "shadeform", i.e. they get black and con red from than on - hit for up to 2k and AE stun - wait loading (healers stuned - wipe inc.)

It took us more than 3 hours till that point. So either have a more "classic" groupsetup (war instead pal as MT and dps instead second pal) or plan 3-4 hours to complete the mission.

ok to clarify... Key can spawn in second room on right and (mostly) second room on left. We cleared down to the second room on left. About 7 wanderers and maybe 6-8 static mobs to pull to clear that room. 4 more static and 2 wanderers near Named. Named hits for 2500 (dont forget the rampage) and hes not undead /does the paladin cry
relatively easy for a 13k paladin to tank with cleric CH and self heals. as far as the ghost. It is completely random when they spawn to the shade mobs (ie. most of them spawned on the pull, and when they spawn its auto agro wipe) two more things.. once they spawn to shades they will corpse camp WHERE they pop at. the other thing.. the shade poppers DO repop. P.S. never once did i see an ae stun. takes 2 hours with even a paladin tankin ifyou dont mess around.

there is also a Hate aug that comes from the chest.

it's called Shimmering Scale, with CS IV that fits all 4/8 slot weapons. i'll send in a pic.
