Useless Cloth Caps are uncommo drops by kobold scouts. Take these caps to the skeleton miners at the entrance to Paineel, or to the abandoned heretic pets. Both will give experience and a random item.

The abandoned heretic pet will reward you with a gem he has recently mined. There are 4 of them inside a hut in the northeast corner of the zone.

Hand abandoned heretic pet the Useless Cloth Cap.

Abandoned heretic pet says, 'Good work. You should be running this operation instead of that Talrigar fellow. Have a small reward. A little bit of the gems I found while tunneling through this rock.'

Your faction standing with Newbie Monster has been adjusted by 5.
You gain experience!

Receive a random gem among: Hematite, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise ...

You say, 'Hail, a skeleton'

a skeleton says 'Grab a pick. Give us a hand!'
a skeleton says 'Aye... You cut out the middleman... I shall reward you... hmm... I have not found anything, how about... How about something off meself?'

Hand a skeleton the Useless Cloth Cap.

A skeleton says, 'Aye... You cut out the middleman... I shall reward you... hmm... I have not found anything, how about... How about something off meself?'

Talk about a tedious quest
# Aug 06 2006 at 4:17 PM Rating: Decent
Been killing kobolds for about a week. It's tough:
  1. if you're not a ranger, you can't track the scouts, and they wander randomly
  2. the zone has limited visibility (always foggy), and it's relatively large to be wandering around randomly
  3. 1/10 (or so) of the kobolds I've seen are scouts
  4. 1/10 (or so) of the scouts have the caps
  5. 1/10 (just a guess) of the time, the shield drops; I created a Erudite necromancer to actually give the caps to the skeleton, and 3 times in a row I've just gotten zombie skins (before that with my human with low faction with Paineel, probably turned 10 of em in, of course no shield)
  6. oh and finally, if a guard gets to a scout before you do, it's a goner; hope it didn't have a cap!

So that means on average I can expect to kill (or at least encounter) 1000 kobolds (1/10 * 1/10 * 1/10 = 1 shield per thousand kobolds) before the shield drops? Jeez...anyone happen to know of an easier way besides the bazaar to get a magic shield?

Turning in the useless cloth caps now gives a faction boost for *drumroll*..... Newbie Monster!
ROFL.... I nearly died laughing when i read that. And yes I know this sounds like BS..... but that truly is the faction hit, wonder if I can actually raise it (20+ caps and still indiff) =)
Bonus

This is a bonus quest for a Low lvl Necro. It helps to get the money to buy your 8th Lvl spells. A+++++
got gems for caps
# Jan 17 2003 at 2:24 PM Rating: Decent
I turned in 3 useless caps to the right skeleton and received a carnelian, a jade and an emerald (sold to vendor in Erudin for 11+pp.) Great quest for my lvl 6 eru mage.
I never saw these
# Jun 02 2002 at 6:43 PM Rating: Default
I never got any weapons or shields from these skels, just a bunch of bone chips or low quality gemstones.

Is it just me or is this quest just silly?
Skeleton Warrior

The Bone Shield also drops (rare) from a skeleton warrior (level 15) in Lavastorm Mountains as well as a Bone Spear 6/29 piercer (magic). Not too tough, killed it quickly with 13 war and 10 sk.
Quite often
# Nov 01 2001 at 4:52 PM Rating: Decent
I get theese qhite often (FV server). The right skell seem to give a malachite all the time but the left one seem to give the femur and the shield. Havn't tried the heretic one... The shield look like a piece of breast bone but have the graphics of a normal red shield...
how many caps
# Oct 27 2001 at 4:55 PM Rating: Default
How many caps have to be turned in at a time?
still working???
# Oct 10 2001 at 4:45 AM Rating: Default
I'm an eru necro and have killed several scouts and every other kind of kolbod and have yet to get a single cap does anybody know if they still drop?
RE: still working???
# Oct 10 2001 at 4:25 PM Rating: Default
Yes still working. got a couple today. BUT, when i tried to turn them in to the AH pet in the hut near the river, it wouldn't click into the trade window. I got the do you want to drop this on the ground message. Is there a specific AH pet that i need to find or was this quest nerfed?
RE: still working???
# Mar 17 2003 at 10:43 AM Rating: Default
That happens to me sometimes. Try clicking on the skellie's head and see if that works. The skeletons are kind of wierd that way.
Minor Caps
# Sep 16 2001 at 9:57 PM Rating: Default
I been trying to collect some useless caps but couldn`t loot any on the dozen scouts i killed in Tox... Even brought my ranger to track them but couldn`t get any.

My question is: can I get caps from scouts in Warrens or just the ones in Tox?

Ajenos

I picked one up in warrens the other day Ajenos. I killed about 25 Kobolds and got one. happy hunting. =)
abandoned pet
# Aug 09 2001 at 1:23 AM Rating: Excellent
There is a hut on the Erudin side at 1200 -900 that contains four abandoned pet, they also give you gems for the caps and are easy for good erudites to get to without crossing the bridge. At indifferent faction i got 3 turqiouse 3 malachite a hematite and a lapis. At lvl 5, 8 caps gave me half an orange of exp, not bad since they can be purchased off vendors for 1cp each if players dont know what they are for and sell them. =)
Graphic ?
# Mar 27 2001 at 11:21 PM Rating: Decent
I made an erudite necro, and got the shield from the skeleton that gives bone chips and skin on the fifth try.

I was under the impression the graphic was a ribcage. It looks like a plain old normal shield on a dark elf cleric and on a wood elf druid.

Is there a shield that looks like a ribcage ?

Thanks
RE: Graphic ?
# Mar 29 2001 at 9:55 AM Rating: Default
AGhh - I just did the same thing. I was expecting a ribcage shield - I have seen people wandering around with one and it looks really cool.

This is just a brown shield.

Does anyone know what shield it is that looks like a ribcage???
RE: Graphic ?
# May 21 2001 at 11:56 PM Rating: Decent
Shield of the Stalwart Seas (erudite paladin only) and a Nautilus Shield (warrior only) both look like Ribcages but drop in the Planes of hate and Fear respectively.
Faction DOES matter
# Mar 20 2001 at 4:12 PM Rating: Decent
I have been talking to a guy from Verant and have gathered that with a higher paniel faction the shield will be more prone to dropping.

So start those erudite necromancers !

Hope that helps
RE: Faction DOES matter
# Mar 29 2001 at 9:57 AM Rating: Default
Have to agree. I tried to get this shield several times with no luck. Then I went into the Warrens and killed kobolds and turned in their molars until I got my faction up to warmly.

Then I went back to the skeleton and got the shield on the first try!

BUT it doesn't look like a ribcage - its just a normal shield :(
Frustration
# Mar 13 2001 at 8:48 AM Rating: Default
I have been keeping track of my caps turned in.

I have turned in 37 to the skeleton that gives bone chips and have gotten 8 fractured femurs
I have turned in 16 to the skeleton that gives gems and gotten only gems

To whom are you all turning in the caps to get the bone shield ?
Am I just really unlucky? If so,..I need a hug
RE: Frustration
# Mar 25 2001 at 7:51 PM Rating: Default
I got the bone shield from the one on the left (as you are heading in towards Paineel) that gives the bone chips and zombie skins.
Best kept secret in Tox
# Mar 09 2001 at 10:07 AM Rating: Default
Tox is really a nice little newbie zone once you get the hang of navigation. And if you spend any time at all in Tox, you *will* learn how to use your various navigation tools effectively. The loot from kobalds is pretty decent (boxes, backpacks, gems, hides, and small change), and there are vendors scattered through Tox (including one caster supplies vendor on the caster faction) so you'll only need to zone to town when your coin gets too heavy.

The skeleton miners are non aggressive, and there is no faction associated with the quest, so anyone can get the rewards.

I got the bone shield when I turned in my first cap. I've gotten malachite, hematite, lapis lazuli, and cat's eye agate as well. The investment return is phenomenal; for each 1 copper cap you can get several silver to several platinum in loot.
time vs reward
# Mar 05 2001 at 11:17 AM Rating: Decent
I made a Erudite SK. at level 4, i killed some of em kobolds, and got some caps of em. when I zoned into Toxx, I saw the skellies asking headwear, so I turned em in. got 3 gems ( one emerald, woot!)and one bonepiercerthingy.
So far I'm pretty sure the right skelly always gives gems. the left one gave me the weapon ( which is crap anyway). Haven't tried the pet yet.
Faction involved ?
# Feb 28 2001 at 8:42 AM Rating: Excellent
I have been doing this quest with my wood elf druid, turned in about 20 or so caps to the skeleton on the left and have gottend bone chips, skin, and two fractured femurs, but no shield.

I have noticed that some of the people that are claiming to have gotten the shield are Erudite, and some necromancers. I am wondering if faction plays a part in the reward.

The skeletons /con indifferent to me
What did they /con to those who have gotten the shield with no trouble ?

Any help is appreciated
RE: Faction involved ?
# Mar 25 2001 at 7:49 PM Rating: Default
I got the shield with my ERU SHD. They give no faction boosts or hits for killing them and con indifferent to me as well while everyone in Paineel is warmly to me. (Even the Erudin guards are indifferent thanks to those kobolds in the Warrens. The kobolds in Toxx are independent of the kobolds in the Warrens. I made a point of staying indifferent to the Toxx kobolds before going into the new dungeon in the hope that they would be indifferent there as well. No dice, they started off at scowling, so the Toxx kobolds were doomed...) Took about 40 caps to get the shield, and I still haven't gotten the femur yet, so more scouts will die. Only the scouts drop the caps--I've been killing all types of kobolds in order to keep the scouts spawning.
Reward
# Dec 19 2000 at 2:30 PM Rating: Decent
Your reward is linked to who you give the cap to. Some skeletons ALWAYS give gems, while the skeleton that gives the shield NEVER gives gems (mostly bone chips / zombie skins).

I have personally received the shield, which is AC8, it has a small plus to disease save, and it's magic, which lets you bash wisps.

Femur also drops off some skelleton that is a semi-rare spawn. Saw him when running aound and he had a neat looking pointy thing in his hand so I said what the hell. Looks pretty cool on a Ranger.
