You can get up to skill level 54 via this quest, provided you are a gnome and meet the level requirements.

You say, 'Hail, Skelontorim Orrthemech'

Skelontorim Orrthemech says 'Hail, ____! I can't believe that we've come this far! I've never been much of a traveler, but I'm glad I took these Wayfarers up on their offer to join, even though that means I have to travel on this leaky wooden contraption. I've been teaching these mechanically ignorant folks something about how things should be done. I have to say, they've taken to it well. When they find something useful they use it. So now we're swamped with requests. I could sure use a good [gnome] to lend a hand here.'

You say, 'I am a gnome.'

Skelontorim Orrthemech says ''Well, with all the items I need to make, I haven't any time to delve into the properties of this [new matter] that they've brought me. If I could just find someone to [lend a hand] around here . . .' Skelontorim peers at you, then around you, seemingly searching about for someone with hands to lend him.

You say, 'What new matter?'

Skelontorim Orrthemech says 'Ah! Fascinating stuff. Blacker than night, it is. Heavy, too. I've taken to calling it dark matter, though Tial is of a mind to call it Tialonium.' Skelontorim chuckles. 'In any case, it's surprisingly fragile and must be handled carefully. It seems as though it reacts to contact very poorly. It has to be tempered and refined before it is of any use. But with the proper tuning, as I call it, dark matter is an extremely powerful energy source. Unfortunately, it's also unstable. I'm very sure that I can put it to better use eventually. If you find any raw dark matter, bring it to me and I'll treat it for you. I'll keep a little for my research, but I'll give you most of it back.'

You say, 'I will lend a hand.'

Skelontorim Orrthemech says 'Great! I'm almost ashamed to ask you to do such a menial task, but we are in desperate need of springs. Nothing fancy, just small, tight springs of the sort that many gnomes learn to make before they are out of their cradle. Just take this wire and you should have new springs for me in no time. Bring them right to me.' Skelontorim pauses, then speaks again. 'I don't imagine you should go unrewarded for your efforts. If you help me enough, I can teach you the secret for treating dark matter. That's a pretty important secret, so you'll have to do a lot of work, but I think it's well worth it!'

  • You receive 20 x Thin Steel Wire. Combine 1 in a toolbox.

  • Simple Spring trivials at 31. After doing each set of 20 combines, hand them back to Skelontorim unstacked, up to four at a time. After handing them all in, say "I will lend a hand" again and he will give you more Simple Spring components until he feels you've made enough (approximately 100).

    You say, 'I will lend a hand.'

    Skelontorim Orrthemech says 'Aha! Just in time. I've got some work to do and I need, well, I need a lot of pulleys. You probably shouldn't ask what I need them for, it's a rather long story involving a cat and a wedding ring. Let's just say that I need some pulleys. These should be simple, you'll only need one of each of the items I've given you. Your toolbox, while in need of some repair, should be more than good enough to do the work.'

  • You receive 20 x Small Axle, 20 x Small Ball Bearings, and 20 x Small Roller. Combine 1 of each in a toolbox.

    You have learned the recipe Simple Pulley!

    Simple Pulley trivials at 38. After doing each set of 20 combines, hand them back to Skelontorim unstacked, up to four at a time. After handing them all in, say "I will lend a hand" again and he will give you more Simple Pulley components until he feels you've made enough (approximately 100).

    You say, 'I will lend a hand.'

    Skelontorim Orrthemech says 'Hello. I've got just the thing. As you may have noticed, we live mostly off of fish here. I noticed that our fishermen are using simple, boring lures. I'd like to get together a stock of my personal lures for them, but I just don't have time. If you could make some simple animated lures, I can at least upgrade their tools and improve their production. Not as well as using my special lures, but with all this work, what can we do? I apologize for the quality of the parts, I have to take what I can find here and even if that's used wine corks, then that's what I have to use. Bring the lures to me when you have them finished.'

  • You receive 20 x Ordinary Lure, 20 x Small Spring, and 20 x Used Cork. Combine 1 of each in a toolbox.

    You have learned the recipe Simple Animated Lure!

    Simple Animated Lure trivials at 46. After doing each set of 20 combines, hand them back to Skelontorim unstacked, up to four at a time. After handing them all in, say "I will lend a hand" again and he will give you more Simple Animated Lure components until he feels you've made enough (approximately 100).

    You say, 'I will lend a hand.'

    Skelontorim Orrthemech smiles widely, 'Fantastic! I am trying to provide some more useful tools for our scouts, namely bows. If you could crank out some simple bow cams for me, I'd be grateful. I like to send folks into battle with the best gear, and those plain wooden bows don't have the punch that they should. With a few simple additions and can give them some serious kick! So hurry back to me with those cams.'

  • You receive 20 x Bolts, 20 x Simple Gears, and 20 x Used Grease. Combine 1 of each in a toolbox.

    You have learned the recipe Simple Bow Cam!

    Simple Bow Cam trivials at 54. After doing each set of 20 combines, hand them back to Skelontorim. After handing them all in, say "I will lend a hand" again and he will give you more Simple Bow Cam components until he feels you've made enough (approximately 100). Finally:

    Skelontorim Orrthemech smiles and claps you on the back. 'I think you've done enough. You look like one of those adventuring gnomes and I hate to keep you working for me. You should be out there defeating our enemies! Only you can bring the proper tools to the fight. If you have forgotten or just want them for posterity, I can give you the [recipes] you used while helping us. Before you go, let me explain to you what you need to know about the dark matter so you can treat it yourself.' Skelontorim whispers into your ear. This is distracting, but you are able to concentrate well enough to understand the process he is explaining. 'That should work well enough with the infused dark matter too. Now run off and save the world, but don't be a stranger!' As you step away from the master tinkerer, you are certain that you can treat both forms of the raw dark matter in your toolkit. In fact you're certain that if you work with the material long enough, you will be able to get better results and lose less of the material in the process.

    If you say recipes to Skelontorim Orthemech, you will learn these 4 recipes and also Tialechaety's 4 recipes as well.

  • You may now place a piece of Raw Dark Matter or Raw Infused Dark Matter in a toolbox and "refine" it (and learn the resulting recipes).

    Simple Animated Lure: 89 (I checked my logs twice, 89 counts of combines, 89 counts of hand-ins)
    Simple Bow Cam: 100!

    I turned them in a single stack of successful combines from 20 components at a time. Eg, if I only made 16 out of 20, then I turned in 16. If I made 19, I turned in 19 - all in one stack.

    I'm guessing there was some fluke with the Lure.

    I imagine it's been updated at some point, but now in the middle of these 2 sentences there is a new one: "Only you can bring the proper tools to the fight. <<<< "If you have forgotten or just want them for posterity, I can give you the [recipes] you used while helping us" >>>> Before you go, let me explain to you what you need to know about the dark matter so you can treat it yourself."


    This adds a new key phrase [recipes], which if said to him causes you to learn not only these four, but also Tialechaety's four recipes without having to go through all the drudgery.

    i used a calculator to keep track of the # of combines i did for the simple pulley to get to the next combine and i turned in 102 pulley's.lets assume the the total need for turn in is 100.i did turn in 4 at a time and not a whole stack.i also made a macro /say lend a hand and put it on my hot bar to speed up the process a little bit.to speed up the process up even more bring a box toon with you and hand them the pieces until you get enough to do approx 140 combines and do the turn ins all at once.140 should allow you to get to 100 pieces.i hope this post helps out .p.s. if someone uses a box toon and it works out please leave a post so others know they can do it.

    last combine i turned in 95 and got the completed text so im thinking its only 90 combine turn ins to get next 1.i hope someone will confirm this.

    If you've given him everything you have created and hail again and he says you haven't completed the task he gave you yet - just destroy the extra components in inventory and re-hail.

    I think the point is...the gnome teaching you how to refine raw GoD matter. But, thats only from reading quest.

    I don't get it.

    From what I understand Gnomes have Tinkering at a skill of 50 at their creation. Level 16 unlocks the tinkering skill for higher combines and advancement so doing this to get 4 points is rediculous in my opinion. Make Standard Bow Cams to get up to the 70's... not this quest.

    Yes, the 4 points you can gain is minimal, but look at the big picture. You can now work with some GoD combines. Each of these quests unlock some secret, and cost only the time it takes. If you dont plan on doing GoD combines, then skip it, but if you do, this should be worth the time and effert.
