Talk to Vaifan Cogswin

Vaifan Cogswin may be found near Fezbin Fizzles at -35, +60, with whom you must have already completed the preflagging to accomplish this step of the quest.

You say, 'Hail, Vaifan Cogswin'

Vaifan Cogswin says 'Well, hello traveler. You here to help with the scout problem we've been having?'

You say, 'Yes.'

Vaifan Cogswin says 'Good to hear. I have been going out of my skull trying to tinker another one to find the first. Now that you are here, I can stop that and focus on compiling the information I already have. Let me tell you, being in charge of something like this is very taxing on the nerves. I remember being a young gnome and whenever I tinkered something it worked the first time. Ah, how good it felt to put the Cogswin family emblem on my wonderful creations. Nowadays it seems like everything I make has some intermittent flaw or defect. I might have to accept that I am getting old and a little slow, but I still have the wits to invent. I should stop rambling and get to the point. I am in charge of scouting the mountain areas known as [Tipt], [Vxed], and the [sewers] under the city. Which would you like to know about?'

You say, 'What sewers?'

Vaifan Cogswin says 'According to my records here, the sewers are a pretty vile area. Filled with some strange creatures, I hear. So, being the genius that I am, I came up with a plan to use a prototype clockwork scout I built when we were having problems exploring the catacombs in Mistmoore. He appeared to be working fine. I received constant detailed reports on the sewers and mountain areas until one day it stopped. For some time I tried to make contact with the clockwork, but nothing. I started working on a second one to retrieve the first when Falcin stumbled onto the boat. In his struggle to get back to us he had to make his escape through the sewers. While going through there, he found this. This is the reporting module used by the clockwork scout. It does not look like much now, but you should have seen it when Falcin gave it to me. I have repaired most of the damage in an attempt to access the information stored within, but there are four vital components missing. I need you to go to the four sewer areas and find a timing gear, a rusty spring, an oiled cog, and a processing gizmo. When you have them all, place them inside the gearbox and combine them. Once this has been done, the gearbox should give you a report. Return the report to me.'

You receive a Broken Clockwork Output Gearbox, a 4-slot container.

Repair the Gearbox

You now need to go through each of the four sewer zones and collect the parts mentioned. The Timing Gear drops in the Emanating Crematory off Cryxtetl, Diseased Larva, and Slime Devourer. The Oiled Cog drops in the Lair of Trapped Ones off Blistering Larva, Sludge-Eating Fly, and Rigara the Lost. The Rusty Spring drops in the Pool of Sludge off Distraught Slimesnipper, Festering Sewer Gnat, and Xthid the Undying. The Processing Gizmo drops in the Purifying Plant off Grimy Turepta, Kril V`Lak and Ukun Packleader. You will need to kill many mobs in the zone before the named mobs spawn.

Once you have all four parts, combine them in the Broken Clockwork Output Gearbox.

As you fit each piece into place the small device comes to life. Whirring and clicking, it begins to shake in your hand as a mangled piece of paper slides out of an opening on the front. Then, just as quickly as it started the device goes dead.

You have crafted a Repaired Clockwork Output Gearbox, as well as the Mangled Report you were looking for. Give the report to Vaifan for your reward. Hang on to the Gearbox, as it will be used in a later subquest.

Vaifan Cogswin says 'Grrr, I was afraid of this. Seems without the extra modules working together this one won't function completely. Nonetheless at least it is fixed now and with your assistance we should be able to reassemble the scout and place this module back inside. Take this. I found it in the gearbox when I first received it. Seems like it may have some affinity with the stone Fezbin gave to you. Let me know when you are ready to help out some more.'

Flag: You were successful in helping Vaifan complete her report of the sewer areas.

You receive A Muddy Gem Shard, which you may combine with the appropriate version of A Green Hued Gemstone (melee, hybrid, caster, priest) with Vaifan's Clockwork Gemcutter Tools in Vaifan's Experimental Sealer to craft A Muddy Green Gemstone.

I guess the strategy here for BiC Sewers is to kill 20ish mobs in any instance and check for nameds. If no nameds up, restart. This strategy still seems full-proof, but it's all luck. I started by completing Plant, Crematory, and Lair of Trapped Ones, and the nameds spawned on the first try in each, right after 20ish kills. When I did Pools of Sludge I had an issue: Killed 25-30 mobs 4 times in a row, nothing. Stayed in the instance longer and killed 50-60, still nothing. Tried a 6th and 7th time, and finally on the 7th time "Xthid the Undying" spawned in the same room as Utani, closer to the zone-in than listed on the ZAM map here.

So it definitely seems like the nameds will spawn around that 20-25 kills mark, but don't expect them to show up in the areas listed on the GoD Progression maps here.

First off I can confirm that you dont need the quest or the gearbox to get the named to spawn. I was able to get Cryxtetl to spawn using a toon that did not have the gearbox or the pre-flag. I wonder though, if having the pre-flag and gearbox might increase the likelihood of a rare spawning. Working on my third piece I cleared the entire pool zone multiple times with no luck. So I went and got the pre-flag and gearbox, took ranger back in, cleared all PHs that I had locs for (pretty sure i cleared 20-30 during this time), and sure enough got a rare on one of the respawns.

So my strat would be:
-Get gearbox and pre-flag just in case. You can do BiC out of order so all you have to do is just talk to Fezbin and Vaifan.
-Have a ranger. It just makes it easier.
-Get locs and/or map labels for any PHs that you can. I will try to compile a list later.
-Invis through and clear any of the PHs you can. You will run into see invis mobs along the way, so you will end up killing the 20 to 30 mobs during this process.
-Wait for respawns of the PHs which hopefully will include a named.

At this point its a toss up. Lots of people seem to say if you don't get a rare on the first set of respawns to quit the expedition and repeat the above process. I'm still not sure if all the tricks above really do anything or if the spawns are just random..

/target Gamesh

One can save significant time dropping DZs by typing /tar Gamesh and the keyword to spawn a new instance. This works through the wall without having to fiddle around with invis and running back and forth.
Have the Gearbox in inventory to spawn!

For each of the 4 sewer instances, you MUST have teh gearbox in your inventory to spawn the namers. As mentioned previously, zone into the instance, kill 20-30, and check track. If the namer hasn't spawned, get a new instance.

verfied that you do NOT need the gearbox in inventory to spawn the named. You do need to kill about 20 mobs.

If the mob isn't up after those kills, the reason it works better to just repull the instance is that in 20 kills you will repop ALL possible spawn points. That parts great advice.

Just got the Oiled Cog from Rigara the Lost last night in Lair of Trapped Ones.
Second time in a row he's dropped it.

Fezbin Fizzles is listed (at the time of this post) as an involved NPC. This is misleading. He is not involved at all.

Bah, what can I say? :)

Well -- I guess I can say I somewhat retract that Fezbin not being involved.

If you don't hold on to the Vaifan's Experimental Sealer -- you will have to get another one from him.

If that qualifies him as being involved... but if you held on to it -- you don't need him at all.

Camping drops

this has been the biggest headache of all the stages for me on this quest. Over 72 hours of farming to get the named to spawn so thought i would post the eventual tactics that worked for all 4 drops.

I only used the non-flag versions as i was unable to get flagging ones as i already had the flags - it may be different for the flag versions.

Tips:-
1) take a good tracker
2) To get the named to spawn or their placeholders you have to have killed 20 mobs or more.
3) the named will not necessarily spawn each time you request a mission. - so save yourself a lot of time - kill 20 mobs at zone in and hit track - if no BiC dropping named have spawned - kill up to 10 more and check again - if still nothing - leave and get a new mission.

This is based on information eventually passed on by a GM - they also said you needed to have done the prehail with Vaifan Cogswain in order for any chance of the named to spawn on these missions - but as i already had 1 drop before that am not sure thatthis information .. was .. entirely accurate.

Tactics before this had included camping all the internet posted placeholders, for hours on end, and also killing absolutely everything in the zones over and over. eventually the kill 20-25 worked well and the drops then came much faster .. but consider ing first 2 drops took over 2 days of farming anything would have seemed quicker. the kill 20-25 at zone and hitting track worked to get the drops for the 3 farmers in my regulare group.

Hope this helps people on this extremely long and frustrating quest.

This strategy worked well for me. One thing I'd like to note, is that I saw about 7 or 8 PHs spawn in the crematory, both the sludge lurker in the pool inside the 2nd room (counting the zone in room) and the nihil spirit that spawns in between the zone line room and that 2nd room. I didnt get any named in any of those 7 or 8 instances.

I then went to Abysmal Sea and hailed Vaifan Cogswin, asked about the sewers and received the Broken Clockwork Output Gearbox. The next instance of Crematory I did, the Slime Devourer spawned in the 3rd room at Loc Neg 1250 Pos 376. So there may be some truth to the need for having some invisible preflag to spawn these named mobs.
