It is advised to get the Quest items prior to looking for Hasten in Rathe as he will despawn after a certain amount of time and getting him to spawn in the first place can take hours with bad luck.`

The Shadowed Rapier is a TEMPORARY item that drops from "a shadowed man," found in several zones. Since it's TEMPORARY, it's best to get this last.

The Ring of the Ancients drops from "an ancient cyclops," found in Ocean of Tears and Southern Desert of Ro. In the Ocean of Tears, the AC spawns on the seafury cyclops island and can spawn in place of any of the seafuries. The Southern Desert of Ro AC has a much more intriciate spawn mechanic that can be found on his bestiary page.

You will also need the equivalent of 3250 Gold for the turnin. (325 Platinum works).

Hasten Bootstrutter is a semi-rare spawn in Rathe Mountains. He, or any of the mobs on his spawn cycle will spawn in the Northeast section of the map in the area where Hill Giants are found approximately every 6 minutes(provided they are kept down). Once any of these NPCs or Hasten spawns they will begin roaming throughout the zone where after running their route they will despawn and a new mob will spawn. If you set up camp at the little valley leading into the Hill Giant area every placeholder or Hasten will roam right past you provided they aren't killed by another player.

NPCs that are PHs for Hasten listed in order of how often they pop: Spawns are at exactly 4m 45sec cycles.
a drake
a grizzly bear
Brother Zephyl
Maldyn the Unkempt

You say, 'Hail, Hasten Bootstrutter'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Stopped, I have. Greet you, I do. What business do we have? Hmm? Speak up!!'

You say, 'Journeyman's boots.'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Journeyman's boots are what you seek? Ha!! Those I have upon my feet and disintegrate will they if my life is taken. Extra pair have I, and, possibly, [rare trade] can we make.'

You say, 'What rare trade?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Three things I call for and journeyman boots are yours. A [shadowed rapier], [ring of the ancients] and gold... 3250 gold coins I call for !! This trade I call.'

You say, 'What shadowed rapier?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Shadowed men, foes to all, have appeared. Many lands do they walk. Invisible are they, but for the items they wield. Seek them out and return to me a shadowed rapier. Return it with haste before 'poof' goes the rapier!! No time to camp have you.'

You say, 'What ring of the ancients?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Ancient cyclopes [sic] do march the land. Long have they lived and crafted the rings of the ancients. I must have one and you shall go and fetch one for me. Seek the lands of the oldest cyclops clans. Seek the plains, seek the island in tears and search the dunes for there is one who is last. His clan was blown from the sands.'

Give Hasten the Shadowed Rapier, the Ring of the Ancients, and 3250 gold (or 325 platinum)

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'The time to trade has come!! I am now rich and you are now fast. Take the journeyman boots and run like the wind.'

Thornbriar quest adjustments
# Aug 04 2021 at 3:39 PM Rating: Good
For those that have joined us on the Thornbriar server, loot works a bit differently, and it makes this quest and its results SO much easier/cheaper than it ever was on other servers. The Ancient Ring can also drop from the Nobles/King camp in Sol B (admin pls do not add this, Thornbriar only), as well as the usual places, making this quest significantly easier to do. An hour regular XPing there at near level saw 3 Rings drop, 2 even at one time.
As we are in Kunark currently, and likely even into Velious release, monks will be here on the regular on the spawn cycle trying to get Brother Z to spawn. It's the same rotation, and often pops after Hasten is killed so please if you are a monk, warn the zone when Hasten pops and before killing him!

I think you're better off going to S. Ro for the ancient cyclops now, rather than the island in OOT. Odds are you won't be able to find anyone to go with you to OOT anymore to help you keep the island clear until the ancient cyclops spawns, and if you get into trouble alone out there, you won't have anyone to help you or a zone line nearby that you can quickly run to. S. Ro might be a longer spawn cycle, but you have two zone lines that you can run to if you overpull or get adds.

I've seen it happen twice (Agnarr). So if you see the bear up on track and he disappears, he has either wandered outside your tracking radius, or was killed by a hill giant and you need to reset your spawn timer.

Don't have to go through any text. Just hail him to get him to stop, hand him the items and plat. Can MQ as well. You can hand them in separately, but why would you? :P

Updated the quest a little to hopefully help any people on Agnarr that may have trouble getting Hasten to spawn. At some point a grizzly bear was added to his spawn cycle which seems to be throwing some people off.

Play EQ the first 15 years or so it was out; then got burned out. Started playing again a week ago. Did this quest yesterday as 40 enchanter. Took 12 hrs in South Ro to finally get the AC to spawn (unless he spawned earlier and I missed him) ... a lot of pain in the **** named mobs that didn't help the time factor (Moldrak w/pet, Arthikus w/pet, Ghoul of Takish-Hiz, Terrorantula and ALL her babies, Orbetl, and all the giants. Glad thats over! Definately would of done Seafury's if I was a higher level; used to farm the *** out of the AC when I played before and sell it for 6k or so, which seems to be small change now.

Still a fun quest. The OOT go east 2 islands till you find the cyclops island...they are all over the place. Kill all the Cyclops until Ancient Cyclops pops up. Sat a tracker in the Mountains of rathe, there is a path that Hasten follows you can google it. I sat my tracker in the pathways west of the feerrott zone line until I saw him pop up on tracker. Just kept hailing him till I ran my other toon over to him with Ring, Shadow rapier (which i got from lfaydark shadowmen first), and 325 plat. turned it in and it worked. Took 2 hours for Hasten to spawn that day, and I think a total of 2 different days hunting ancient for me to find Him. Good Luck !

Already stated I believe, but I just got him 3 times today in about... 2 hours, very lucky I know and no I wasn't clearing the entire island.

1. Others were and left
2. Respawn started to happen
3. He spawned in front of me. I kill him
4. about 5 minutes later, more respawns and him again
5. camped for about 1 hour after that and he spawned again

Very very lucky but all we were killing were Sea Furies oh and some Corrupted for someones epic was up... Didn't touch him.

I was tanking at 44, healer was 38 and chanter was 39. So it was pretty easy and meh exp as we are slow. Cleric made 25% in that time of 38.

Cheers

Hasten no longer "hastens" around Rathe. He walks at a very leisurely pace. If you're doing this quest for a very low level alt, have your higher level alt catch him near his spawn point close to the giants. The higher level char then gives him the ring and the rapier, then spam hail him as you log. Have your low level camped at the crossroads near Feerott with the 325pp. When you log in the lower alt, Hasten may be still approaching the crossroads or just past them. If you don't see him, run straight ahead from the Feerott zone area and you should see him in a few moments. It's not like the old days where it was extremely hard to catch him.

30 levels higher than most of the mobs should allow one to speed up the camp. Lower level people can expect this to take much longer if not lucky. Letting us know that the modern spawn locations for the ancient cyclops are in play on the current TLP is helpful, thanks.

For those trying this at lower level, keebosabi's older post gives you some insight:

keebosabi wrote:
I am playing my level 33 wizzy and doing this quest using a merc wizzy. I killed stuff in South Ro for a couple levels and no luck. I have spawned him there with my higher toons but I don't have the mana at my level (using "old world gear and zones ONLY") to keep the area dead.

After reading these other posts throughout these pages and with my own experience, this is the way it seems to be:

1) To spawn the AC in South Ro, there seems to be quite a few spawn points from the northern area to the southern areas. The last time I spawned and killed him, I stood near the center of the desert area where the flat spot is. The flat spot is just east of the first hill north of the spires. I killed everything that pathed within casting range of that flat spot. Within 1 or 2 spawn cycles(roughly 18-20 minutes per cycle I think), I saw him just north of the hill I mentioned earlier and as he went around the west side of the hill. I watched to see where he was pathing. He walked up to the spires and stood there which is where he died too. As a lvl 33 wizzy, I killed all the mobs that came up to the spires for maybe 12-15 hours or more except the named madman was up and too high for me to kill. I never saw the AC. Maybe the Madman was his ph, I dunno.
At lvl 32, I went to Ocean of Tears to try my luck on the Cyclops Island. Allakhazam says the cyclops are lvl 36-39 and the Ancient Cyclop is lvl 40. When I got there, the AC was up and roaming on the side of one of the hills. Every "a seafury cyclops" on the island is a ph for him. I bound myself on the edge of the water at the druid ring (no mobs path there). I pulled him and killed him with my merc wizzy helping. The mobs here are resistant to fire nukes but the cold nukes hit full damage.

2) The Shadowed Rapier drops at all the shadowedman camps but it seems during the revamping of EQ some things have changed. I went to the shadowedman camp in South Karana and there were no shadowedmen to be seen. I waited for their spawn time and still no sign of them. It seems they are AWOL. If someone finds them in South Karana, can you post a location here please. I killed the camp in Commonlands but took 6-8 spawn cycles for me to get the shadowed rapier. There were up to 6 in the camp at a time so to break the camp I nuked 2 dead and ported out. Then 2 more and ported out. then came back and killed the last 2 spawns. Sometimes 4 would respawn and sometimes only one would respawn at a time. I used fire nukes and was rarely resisted.

3) As for Hasten, I remembered the last time I did the quest, I read the posts and found one that was very helpful. I followed the same advice from memory that I did then and achieved the same results.
From The Feerrott zoneline, run to the first crossing. The path goes right, left, and straight. Sit right there and face north. Kill everything that paths through there. The mobs will be coming back through that area again in 8 minutes. I have managed to get very close to Hastens actually spawn point but it is easier to just tell you to sit in the intersection and watch for him. Most of the time, I see his ph as the drake which is light blue or green con to me at lvl 33. Kill the drake and the ph will be popping over the hill again in 8 minutes which means his actual spawn time is about 6 minutes because he kills time up in that area before he roams out of it.
I gave him 325PP, the shadowed rapier, and the ring of the ancients and now have my super AC +1 boots with the 18 min run buff (instant cast time).

It seems Hasten has numerous ph's and spawn points. It seems possible that any roaming drake can be his ph and I am sure other mobs as well besides the named one like Brother Zephyl who drops the robe for monk epic and the other named mob I can't think of the name of.

I hope this info has helped people. Good Luck in your J-Boots questing. If you wanna contact me for help or just questions, look for Keebo(85 druid) or Snaap(33 Wizzy and growing) on Drinal/Maelin server.

OOT:
Spawns randomly from any cyclops on the cyclops island.
Just slaughter the island until he pops.
Cyclops are not stunnable or mezzable at level 60 with kunark era spells, so AEing is limited to simply overpowering them with multiple AE's. Since they run, AE snare is also essential. I'd suggest this route if cyclops island provides good xp for you still.

South Ro (My suggested option for higher level toons)
Bring a tracker.
AC only pops at NIGHT.
AC PH spawns every 8 in game hours, so at maximum you get 2 spawns every in game day. Timing when you kill the PH becomes essential to maximizing your potential spawns.
This is easier achieved when no one else is in the zone killing yard trash in the Wizard Spire / Druid Portal area of South Ro.
I have camped AC for 5 of my 6 characters on Lockjaw in the below fashion. It took approximately 14 hours in total at level 60 with a warrior, bard, cleric, enchanter and two wizards.

Stand at P1800,N1400 on the hill between the merchants under the tents and the wizard portal.
At just prior to 8 PM game time, round up all of the following mobs:
a mummy
a dervish cutthroat (not the ones in caps! This is the only one that paths!)
a desert madman
a sand giant
Send them all to their graves once it is 8 PM game time.

In this first round, continue to kill any of the following for the next 6 in-game hours:
a desert madman
a sand giant
These mobs can spawn off of other mobs as well. Your goal is to ensure that they respawn as some of the other yard trash not on the original list above so that only the PH for AC which could be a desert madman or a sand giant will be popping going forward. Its a pain to track down multiple mobs named the same that could be a PH for AC, so this makes sense if you plan to camp a few sets for multiple characters or are trying to do this at levels where the sand giants give experience and could be a challenge.

At 4 AM game time, track down any of the original list of mobs (which should be a significantly shorter amount of mobs now that some mobs you've turned into yard trash).
Pull them all to your hill.
Wait until 12 Noon game time and then kill them all.

If only one mob of the original list of 4 was up at 4 AM and killed at 12 noon, then you do not have to continue monitoring track for a desert madman or a sand giant.
If there were, continue to monitor track for the next 6 in game hours and continue killing them until they have all spawned as anything else.

At 8 PM game time, your PH from the original list will pop. Pull it and kill it immediately.

Repeat the pattern at 4 AM, holding off at killing the mob until 12 Noon game time.

This ensures you get two spawns per in game day cycle. Note, you could in theory get three spawns a day if you instantly killed the PH, but no matter how you cut it, only two of the three possible spawns in each 24 hour period will be at night which could spawn AC. The above process ensures you kill the PH in a matter that establishes a timer so you can AFK between spawns that will both be at night and potentially spawn the AC.

According to the AC page for the South Ro AC, the TLP spawn is 24 minutes and 42 seconds, so you can set your timer to that between PH's.

I just completed this quest today on Vox after camping the cyclops on and off for a week. Just keep clearing the cykes and eventually the ancient will spawn. Don't worry about Broog or goblins - the ancient used to spawn on a different island w/placeholders, but that's no longer the case. Good luck!

The AC spawned in the Ocean of Tiers on the seafury island next to the old druid ring. I guess I got lucky because I just swam up to the island killed like two cyclops and bam saw him and killed him got the ring first loot.

For the shadowed rapier I sat at the shadowed man camp in the Old commonlands at the bottom left hand corner facing away from east freeport. took a couple of groups till one finally spawned that had it.

Hasten bootstrutter was just a matter of patience. From the feerrot zone at the crossroads I took a right to head towards the giants. I found "a drake" which is the PH of Hasten killed him and ran back towards the path where it opens up into the HG area. I backed up a few to get a good view of the whole path just in case. Sat there and waited till i saw the "a drake" come thur again. Kept killing him about 3 times until low and behold Hasten appeared. Ran up to him as he was walking so I did't have to chase him down, hailed him and gave him "The ring of Ancients" "Shadowed Rapier" "325 Platinum" and got the boots.

I haven't played since 2001 (or maybe 2002?) so a LOT has changed I'm sure, but I remember the Trivial Loot Code causing problems back in the day... Is it possible to get Shadowed Rapiers when the Shadowed Men are green or gray? And does the Ancient Cyclops still appear on his usual island across from the Seafurys?

I may play again and do this quest for old memories sake. :o)

Also, the trivial loot code has long since been scrubbed along with many other changer on FV. Now you can have 8 toons on FV and there is also a 50% full-time exp modifier for the server. They had a free - voluntary character move to this server in Feb.2011, but once there, you cannot leave. This was not a problem for me so I move 16 toons over there.

OOT=Ocean of Tears. So "OOT cyclops"="cyclops in Ocean of Tears", not Rathe. ;)

A Drake spawns at 2713.15, -2074.88 in Rathe Mountains... Got Hasten to spawn but didn't actually see him spawn... I apparently missed him running by me. After about 10 to 15 minutes of watching the spawn point for the Drake I went and checked the path. Only took me 4 or 5 A Drake kills to get him to pop.

Also killed Hasten for fun... Didn't drop anything and no faction hits.

If you sit in Rath, at cross-road leading to Freerot, facing the direction towards the Giants. Kill anything that comes from that direction. You will see him a ways off coming towards you. Gives you time to hail him and have your stuff ready.
