It is advised to get the Quest items prior to looking for Hasten in Rathe as he will despawn after a certain amount of time and getting him to spawn in the first place can take hours with bad luck.`

The Shadowed Rapier is a TEMPORARY item that drops from "a shadowed man," found in several zones. Since it's TEMPORARY, it's best to get this last.

The Ring of the Ancients drops from "an ancient cyclops," found in Ocean of Tears and Southern Desert of Ro. In the Ocean of Tears, the AC spawns on the seafury cyclops island and can spawn in place of any of the seafuries. The Southern Desert of Ro AC has a much more intriciate spawn mechanic that can be found on his bestiary page.

You will also need the equivalent of 3250 Gold for the turnin. (325 Platinum works).

Hasten Bootstrutter is a semi-rare spawn in Rathe Mountains. He, or any of the mobs on his spawn cycle will spawn in the Northeast section of the map in the area where Hill Giants are found approximately every 6 minutes(provided they are kept down). Once any of these NPCs or Hasten spawns they will begin roaming throughout the zone where after running their route they will despawn and a new mob will spawn. If you set up camp at the little valley leading into the Hill Giant area every placeholder or Hasten will roam right past you provided they aren't killed by another player.

NPCs that are PHs for Hasten listed in order of how often they pop: Spawns are at exactly 4m 45sec cycles.
a drake
a grizzly bear
Brother Zephyl
Maldyn the Unkempt

You say, 'Hail, Hasten Bootstrutter'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Stopped, I have. Greet you, I do. What business do we have? Hmm? Speak up!!'

You say, 'Journeyman's boots.'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Journeyman's boots are what you seek? Ha!! Those I have upon my feet and disintegrate will they if my life is taken. Extra pair have I, and, possibly, [rare trade] can we make.'

You say, 'What rare trade?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Three things I call for and journeyman boots are yours. A [shadowed rapier], [ring of the ancients] and gold... 3250 gold coins I call for !! This trade I call.'

You say, 'What shadowed rapier?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Shadowed men, foes to all, have appeared. Many lands do they walk. Invisible are they, but for the items they wield. Seek them out and return to me a shadowed rapier. Return it with haste before 'poof' goes the rapier!! No time to camp have you.'

You say, 'What ring of the ancients?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Ancient cyclopes [sic] do march the land. Long have they lived and crafted the rings of the ancients. I must have one and you shall go and fetch one for me. Seek the lands of the oldest cyclops clans. Seek the plains, seek the island in tears and search the dunes for there is one who is last. His clan was blown from the sands.'

Give Hasten the Shadowed Rapier, the Ring of the Ancients, and 3250 gold (or 325 platinum)

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'The time to trade has come!! I am now rich and you are now fast. Take the journeyman boots and run like the wind.'

Easy Camp

Heh ported into SRO last night at about 3am. Was gonna run to Timourous Deep and bind in the oasis where Faydedar spawns after having killed Venril Sathir's remains about 5 hours earlier. Well soon as I ported into SRO, i checked track to see if terrorantula was up cause I'd only ever seen him once and was in too much of a hurry to bother killing him the first time. Well to my surprise the AC was up and no one else was in the zone. Now i've never bothered to sit and camp the AC nor ever bothered to get the boots for myself since I am a druid and have had various better forms of movement spells better than boot. Well I snared, rooted and 2 fists of karanas later, the ring was in my inventory. Since I don't need the boots myself I guess I'll go MQ it to a guildy friend of mine as a surprise.

Not sure if this helps or not, but just spent 2 hours(RL) camping AC in SRo. Used a very complicated tactic. Run around and kill everything. In those 2 hours I killed 8 SG's 1 Terrorantula and then finally the AC. Not the most scientific method, but it worked. When I saw AC raoming through desert I checked the time and sure enough it was 2am game time. Hope this helps people.

Well this is the 5th time ive tried camping the ac and once again iv had my camp stolen lol. Been in OoT for 6 and a half hours and theres only been 2 other pple in zone all day at other camps. I leave for 5 mins, porting to pok for a quick c3 and gate back to find a pair of necros sitting on the beach telling me to get off their camp. Another sweet day in paradise... oh how i wish Luclin was pvp........

Sunken Tower Mobs
# Jul 07 2003 at 2:39 AM Rating: Decent
It has never been verified that the mobs who spawn in the sunken tower in SRo have any effect on the AC popping or not. The mobs there ("crypt mummy," etc. that were mentioned) have often been left entirely alone for 3 straight nights and the AC still popped... simply by following my advice in my previous post.

I am aware of the theory that killing a unique undead mob in the tower can reset the spawn cycle for the rest of the uniques in the zone. If this were backed with clear evidence that it is, in fact, the case then I would have mentioned the tower. But since I have gotten him to pop dozens of times without ever once bothering with the tower mobs, I do not see any clear connection between the two.

Of course, it does no *harm* to kill those spawns, and if there is even a tiny chance it will have an effect, may as well kill them to be certain.

As for specific times that the AC pops, as I said in my earlier post: I have had him pop at 10, 2, 4, and 6 at night and have never seen him pop at an odd numbered hour. Again, what we at least agree upon is that he pops at night, not during the day.

In his post dated June 20th, 2003, Rasterburn listed the PHs that are part of the S Ro AC spawn cycle. The list he posted was:

a mummy
a sand mummy
a skeleton
a madman
an asp
a rattlesnake
a giant rattlesnake
an orc raider
a young ronin
a jackal
Scrounge (unique named jackal)
Sand Giant Hussam (unique named sand giant)
a terrorantuling
Terrorantula

I have done this quest quest 12-15 times and killed the AC the same way each time. Here's where I differ from what Rasterburn posted...

The list of PHs I use is as follows:

crypt mummy (not "a crypt mummy")
sand mummy (not "a sand mummy")
a drybone skeleton (not "drybone skeleton")
a madman
an asp
a jackal (there's only one that spawns in the desert)
Sand Giant Hussam (unique named sand giant)
sand giant (all of em that spawn)
Terrorantula

I have seen terrorantualings spawn, but when they have I often see them up along with any of the above named. So they do not appear to be part of the cycle. Kill em if it makes you feel better tho.

I have also seen 2 clusters of spiders spawn(desert tarantulas) that spawn in groups of 5 each. They fan out. I haven't been able to say for sure that they are part of the cycle, but I can say I have never killed the AC while a spider is alive and roaming in the desert.

These PHs spawn 2 game-hours apart. (so about 8 real minutes)

The sunken tower plays a role as well, though I know many people will disagree with me on this. But I repeat: I have done this 12-15 times and each time I followed the procedure I'm about to describe below.

An undead, one of the named ones from the list above, will spawn in the sunkent tower. Wait until 5pm game time and kill it.

The AC will spawn (if he spawns at all) at 11pm game time. There is a random chance, as Rasterburn indicates, that the AC will randomly spawn instead of the PH. So his method DOES work, I just like mine better. It seems more reliable.

So...after you kill the undead in the sunken tower at 5pm game time, wait until 8pm and go look for the PHs on the list above. Once you find it, wait until 9pm and kill it. Then, between 9pm and 11pm, make sure all of the spiders are dead.

If the spiders are all dead AND you killed the last PH at 9pm game time AND you killed the undead in the sunken tower at 5pm game time, you will get either Terrorantual or the Ancient Cyclops at 11pm game time.

I have not seen this fail yet. And as I have said, I've done this 12-15 times.

Good Luck! :)
AC in OOT

Sorry if this has been said before, but I'm not really in the mood to read 16 pages of garbage at the moment.

Like in many games, it seems the odds of an AC popping in OOT are based on a certain chance system which I've seen before. Once the AC is killed here, the chances you'll see him again are 1 in 255 (or 1 in 256, forget which number it was). There is no pattern in monster spawns on this island that will help you determine if the AC will pop next. Just gotta wait. Those of you out there who got him once, did the Boots, and came back and got him again the same day, you guys WERE very lucky, but someone else might have killed 30 of the PH's there, and you just picked up where they left off and got an early pop.

Good luck, though, you'll need it. Just spent 13 hours before he finally popped.

AC in SRo Tips
# Jun 20 2003 at 5:38 PM Rating: Excellent
The AC has no placeholders per se... he is one of several "unique" mobs who can spawn at night (between 8pm and 6am game time). If you saw him during the day, it is because he spawned during the night and no one killed him. Saying you saw him pop during the day is incorrect... unless it was during the wee morning hours at or before 6am. This is verified.

Any of the following can pop in place of the AC... killing them will not force him to spawn, but will allow the zone to "roll the dice" again, and perhaps he will be the next unique mob to pop:

a mummy
a sand mummy
a skeleton
a madman
an asp
a rattlesnake
a giant rattlesnake
an orc raider
a young ronin
a jackal
Scrounge (unique named jackal)
Sand Giant Hussam (unique named sand giant)
a terrorantuling
Terrorantula

Notice that most of these mobs have no adjectives in their names... "a mummy" instead of "a crypt mummy" for example, or "a madman" instead of "a desert madman." Also, most of the time, these unique mobs pop at even numbered hours during the night... 8, 10, 12, 2, 4, 6... all game times. At least, this has been my experience.

Running about killing everything in the zone accomplishes nothing, ever. But killing those mobs listed above can hasten his arrival by quickly opening up a spot for another "unique" mob to spawn... and it may be the AC next.

The bottom line is that he is a randomme, unique spawn who has no placeholders at all. And he only spawns at night, as others have said. Go do whatever you like during the day, just get back to SRo a little before 8pm game time. Also, he usually pops either near the dark elf merchants, or toward the back of the zone near the zoneline to Oasis. But near the merchants is far more common. Lastly, neither "Alumnam Dathry" (named madman) nor the Dervish Cutthroats have anything to do with the spawn cycles, so you can ignore them.

Good luck =)

I agree with this method. I just spent 4 RL days (noncontinuous) and he popped 5 times. 2 of the five times I had been in the zone all by myself for at least an hour with out killing any mobs and he popped. He is completely random. On a second note a 34 wiz can easily solo this guy. I came out of fight with over 50M.

Getting the AC
# Jun 13 2003 at 8:08 AM Rating: Decent
Guys -

I spent six levels in south ro and know it like the back of my hand. I have seen people camp for days and i have seen four AC in one day.

The trick is in the placeholders. The people who have gotten the AC to spawn have been the people who have had pets and who just over and over sent the pets out to kill all the yard trash. There are suppose to be four placeholders. I believe they are spiders, skellies, madmen, and orcs (wandering but take out the camps too). If you have a pet, and just over and over kill absolutely everything in the zone that is on the sand, you will get the AC to spawn. But I mean everything, which gets boring for most folks. Having a pet makes things easier because you just point the pet at whatever and it can easily kill it off. You also need to make sure you get everything on the sand, and that is sometimes hard because of the sight lines and you need to keep moving around to catch the corners. If you do this, in about an hour, the AC will spawn.

I have to also say that I got mine while going showing a newbie the zone. He was just strolling around and no one was camping him. My luck.

Good luck.

hey buddys, well i'll tell ya an experience with campin this AC. one fine morin i decided to camp this guy and see if i could get him. after hearing from a buddy "it took me 20 hours to get this guy" i figured i should buy the MQ instead. but after an hour of sitting here guess what spawn? yep, the AC! and guess who's gonna kill it? not me! while he was spawned, the merchants were attacking him, so i thought to make a last ditch effort i should at least attack (he was at 60% health when i got to him) and yea i get some pretty good damage off but at the end he says "Arrgh! My precious ring!" merchant gets the final blow and POOF! no more AC. least to say i was a lil mad. well hopefully nothing like this happens to you guys that camp him, GL in gettin him!

I've camped the AC in OoT a few times for myself and guildies. Also tried in S Ro but since I do not have track and am not inherently lucky, I recommend do not waste your time in S Ro. I agree most people in OoT will respect your AC camp (at least on the Nameless server), and you know where the guy spawns. Last time I camped him was Fri May 23rd and he spawned at midnight after a five hour camp. Took him down easily with a 54 chanter and 40 monk (boots were for the monk). There seems to be a pattern in these posts, he seems to appear around midnight and noon. Good luck, my chanter has had them for about 6 months and they were well worth the effort.

I've been camping the AC for 30+ hours (on and off) over the course of 3 weeks. Beginning to wonder if it still exists.
I log on and pop in POK with my 37 Warrior, MGB AEGO, run for AEGO!
Sitting waiting for AEGO, A nice Druid of 55 or so, buffs me. Get the AEGO, decide to head for desert to kill SGs. head for Innothule swamp, pop in SDR. Running for desert I crest the first sand dune and see what I think is a SG, but to my amazement its the AC! And its not taking damage, and I appear to be alone in the zone. I make a bee line for him, I zing him with an arrow, he turns and charges me. I take him down in short order, easing his and my suffering(LOL). Game time 12 midnight June 25th. Its my RL birthday on that day June 25th. WOOT!
Well off to WC to get the rapier and then to RM to get my long awaited Jboots!!

G.L. All, happy hunting and may you have a safe journey!!!

Hate all these people saying they got their jboots in 2 hours? This should make you feel better. I camp Sro in the middle of the night when almost no one is ever around. Total camp time for ac... 16 hours. But at the 15 hour mark I grouped with someone under the agreement we roll for the ring if the AC pops. Out of 1-1000 I roll... wait for it... 41. Fortunately the monk I was grouping with was very nice and stayed and helped me try to spawn another until she was too tired to stay up anymore. Another kind level 50+ then helped trying to spawn it too... Nothing except SGs and one terrorantula. Terrorantula isn't as big as you'd expect, BTW. Oh, he's big, but he's not as big as the posts on his profile indicate. I stay on until... I guess it was the 20-22nd hour mark, I don't know, lost exact count. High level paladin shows up and starts going around slaughtering everything that moves. Much to my relief, he just wanted some silks. Before I can even reply, AC pops. He invites me and starts whacking away at it, and says to loot the ring. I happily give him some terrorantula silks (which I was going to do anyway) and loot the ring. But wait, that's not all...

Head over to WC. Hrm, lots of shadowmen. I soothe them all and cease one to pull it. They ALL charge at me, and being still in my 30s, they take me down in short order. So I start camping the nek forest ones. They come in 3s, which is a pain but doable. Get a rapier, head to rathe mountains. Kill a drake, and a few minutes later Hasten runs by at the speed of light. He's close enough that I can see his name, but he won't stop at hail. *******. I leave him on target, and about 30 seconds later my target window goes blank. HE DESPAWNED. I wait a few mintues, and that revolting monk runs past me, mocking. Brother Zephyl is the antichrist. 2 hours, he despawns (30 seconds for hasten, 2 hours for zeph.. hrm...) and another drake. Kill it, and the gnome again. He finally stops, and after a full day's online time, I have my jboots. It was well worth it, though. So a few things I wanted to note...

1. This quest does bring out the worst in some people, but it also shows the best in others. There were multiple people that could've taken the AC and the ring before I would've had a prayer and sold the MQ for a quick buck. Not only did they NOT do that, but they went out of their way to help me. There may be a lot of KSers that get mentioned a lot here, but there's also a lot of good people that don't. I just wanna say thanks to everyone like that.
2. Don't count on any of the spawn methods you hear about working fast. I tried them all, usually multiple ones at once. They may increase your chances, but don't count on an AC every other night. I didn't notice anything special after killing the tower spawn at any time, nor after rares. Killing mummies seemed to help spawn SGs though. Still very slow going.
3. Brother Zephyl, while he is pure concentrated evil, doesn't always take as long to despawn as you see people complain about. I'm sure he does take 9-10 hours sometimes, but don't freak out thinking it will definitely take that long like I did. The worst part I would imagine is that he does all that running, and deodorant hasn't been invented yet.
Wow.

Decided I needed some speed, lvl 51 sk on tallon zek. Go to OOT, find the island, and there's a guy on their, 55 nec, human. He's camping AC, so I hit the Seafury cyclops' that he attacks to get my 1HB up. Check out the other island, come back and he's gone. Look around, notice the AC corpse, figured he dropped, looted and split. Nope, Ancient Ring is still on there. 20 minutes in and I've got that. Headed over to Lavastorm, first Shadowed Man I look at has the rapier in his hand. SoD, SoP, 5 whacks and he's gone. 35 minutes in and I've got all components. Grab a sow and 3250 gold, go to Rathe at -850, 450, and it takes about 40 minutes for the lil guy to run by. J-Boots in under an hour and a half.
UGH!

Well lets just say, so far I've had no luck what-so-ever with the AC... First time hunting him, 7-8 hours in Sro... Killed SG's, Terrorantula's, Terrorantulings, The named SG...

Tried killing nothing but undead, tried killing everything but the undead, tried killing named/rare of all, nothing... Had a heck of a time killing the named desert madman... He's a mean ****... Gonna give it a few days before I try again, kinda burnt out on watching the sand dunes flow... LoL...

After Hours and Hours I have found the following: 1.) Camp the AC in SRo you will be KS unless you are the only one in the zone, you are uber, OR you are lucky..regardless if you can get it to pop or not. 2.) OOT camp is a bit longer.. but 99% of the people will honor the camp and will not KS you.. the AC is harder and can be soloed by a 45-50 player depending on gear and class.. Finally, if you give in and go and buy the T-boots (same as j-boots but with a 1 sec. cast time) for the 3-4k (no drop) you CAN NOT sell them back to the vender you bought them from in Sol B.. I know.. I tried.. I had killed the AC by chance in OOT with no one in the zone one night a few weeks ago.. now I have the ring but no need for it.. will prob. MQ it for someone... In short..unless you have a good guild group to out blast the KS'ers of SR.. go to OOT.. if you cant get a group and cant solo.. save plat and buy the T-boots and be done with it...In the 10-20 hours it will take to get it..you can go to the Crystal Caverns and kill orcs for small/large velium and sell in the bazaar and make 4k easy AS WELL as get exp.. Just my 2-cents worth from the school of hard knocks..

Well, I know you wouldn't have any problems at all soloing all the PHs. They are all green to you at your level, except the SG's which you shouldn't have to hard of a time soloing. I think they will be in the dk blue- lt blue range to you and same with the AC. If you want to be sure, just grab an aego or virtue buff and C3 from the nexus or PoK before you head out there. Also, although you may not have any problems at all killing the mobs in this zone, I would seriously recommend that you have a tracker and nuker with you. A druid would be ideal. I say this because in Sro the AC is over camped and often KSed. If you are out there alone with no means of tracking and no sow potions, you can bet someone will
A) beat you to the AC altogether
or
B) KS the AC from you, VERY easy to do by a nuker when you are a melee tanker

So if you could get a druid to go with you I would...not to say it's not possible to do it on your own...but would certainly make it much easier for you.

Hope this helps

well, i camped the SG's in S Ro for about 4 hours with no pop from the AC, and the place was getting crowded, so i headed over to OOT....lucky for me campsite was open! sat and waited for placeholders to spawn (yes, they are much higher lvl than in S Ro) and with the help of another chanter in my guild (thank you Irel!) the AC popped after 6 hours....by which time i was falling asleep at the keyboard...the AC was hitting me, Irel was yelling for me to wake up and just before he landed the fatal nuke on the one eyed bas%$&d, i got squished by it......thank goodness the translocators were up and not the boats on the freeport docks, i made it back with two minutes to spare before the corpse of the AC disintigrated and got my ring =)

Ok, just got the AC to pop in SRo...and I have to disagree with the post about it being harder then OOT camp. I'm on CazicThule server, if that makes a diff. My own JBoots, we got from the OOT AC. Got camp from someone else..he camped for 9 1/2 hours before AC popped. We camped for 5 1/2 hours. Ok...all well and good at least I had them. Tonight I was going to try and get a friend boots but no biggee if I didn't get tonight, so headed to Oot. No go, someone else already camping AC and someone else waiting for the camp. So I head to SRo. There's 7 peeps in zone. We all run around killing stuff, undead, spiders, madmen, zombies, the named guy in the hut/tower/whatever you call it, EVERYTHING. Within one hour we killed 2 Sand giants that spawned. My partner wanted a TL (I'm a 50 Wizzy) so I sat to mem TL and AC popped right in front of me. I hopped up and nuked him, 2 nukes he was toast. The prob with the OOT AC is not only does he take forever to spawn you only have one person camping him at once (unless you want a war by saying he's not a camp) and a long line of other peeps waiting to camp him. SRo was MUCH quicker, even with 7 peeps trying for him. One hour tonight, vs 15+ hours last time in OOT.... I'll take SRo anyday.

Lol...Out of the blue....

I was playing my 51 froglok wizard today and had just got a kei buff and ported to S Ro to med up before I started to hunt the rares.

I was alone in the zone and had been sitting there for about 15 min ignoring the game and talking to my wife when I looked up. There on a sand dune practically in the middle of the desert stood the AC in all his glory!

As I charged toward the AC I did a quick /who check and saw I was still alone in the zone. One Ice Comet and one Draught of Fire later I was the happy holder of a Ring of the Ancients. :)

So it seems that the AC can spawn all on it's own it's just extremely rare for that to happen.

15 minutes isn't long enough for me to be convinced that he popped 'out of the blue' when the cycles of killing the PHs lasts for about 60-75 minutes. Someone could of been in the zone 45 minutes before you came in the zone and killed enough of his PHs to get him to pop but then left before you came. There are ways to get him to pop( that don't work everytime) where you kill a certain PH at a certain time and 20 minutes later either a SG or the AC will spawn. I'm not saying you're wrong, just find it seriously unlikely. The first time I got the ring I walked into the zone, it was empty, and he was up. Doesn't mean he popped out of the blue.
Ac, SRo

Just did this quest easily with 35 wiz-
Ok I dont know about all this undead tower mumbo jumbo but I camped AC in SRo and just watched out for 'unusual' mobs. Ex. instead of a cistern asp PH could be a giant rattlesnake or regular asp, instead of desert madman can be regular madman, instead of dune can be desert tarantula, etc. So the sand giants are a rare spawn of all that trash and the AC is a rare of the SGs. Easily got him to pop with this theory mostly ignored undead.
Shadowed men are everywhere dont need to go to WC.
Good luck
Timing the OoT's AC

So been camping the AC a bunch lately think I have a total of 3 jboots on my alts, and must say the OoT's AC camp is much better than SRo's AC. I camped the first AC for a total of 3.5 hrs, second one right around 2 hours and the last one about 3 hours even. The timing on the pops is 6 mins straight up and I think the ratio of Cyclops to junk PH's are 2/1. Week days are the best time to camp obviously and if you dont mind being bored for a few hours and what not great place to get the ring.
Got em

Got these last night with my 26 Monk. A little heavy for a monk, but well worth the weight. Friend brought the Ring, healed me while I killed the Shadowed Men to get Rapier, and I already had the cash in the bank. Now my Monk can run away as well as fall down and play dead.

Sweet! Instant cast, while running!

Hasten hangs out in RM by the Hill Giant area. Caught him just east of the Med Rock. Can't hail him while invisable. Cost me 3250 in gold as an Iksar. Dunno if price changes according to race or not.

Good luck everyone.
