It is advised to get the Quest items prior to looking for Hasten in Rathe as he will despawn after a certain amount of time and getting him to spawn in the first place can take hours with bad luck.`

The Shadowed Rapier is a TEMPORARY item that drops from "a shadowed man," found in several zones. Since it's TEMPORARY, it's best to get this last.

The Ring of the Ancients drops from "an ancient cyclops," found in Ocean of Tears and Southern Desert of Ro. In the Ocean of Tears, the AC spawns on the seafury cyclops island and can spawn in place of any of the seafuries. The Southern Desert of Ro AC has a much more intriciate spawn mechanic that can be found on his bestiary page.

You will also need the equivalent of 3250 Gold for the turnin. (325 Platinum works).

Hasten Bootstrutter is a semi-rare spawn in Rathe Mountains. He, or any of the mobs on his spawn cycle will spawn in the Northeast section of the map in the area where Hill Giants are found approximately every 6 minutes(provided they are kept down). Once any of these NPCs or Hasten spawns they will begin roaming throughout the zone where after running their route they will despawn and a new mob will spawn. If you set up camp at the little valley leading into the Hill Giant area every placeholder or Hasten will roam right past you provided they aren't killed by another player.

NPCs that are PHs for Hasten listed in order of how often they pop: Spawns are at exactly 4m 45sec cycles.
a drake
a grizzly bear
Brother Zephyl
Maldyn the Unkempt

You say, 'Hail, Hasten Bootstrutter'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Stopped, I have. Greet you, I do. What business do we have? Hmm? Speak up!!'

You say, 'Journeyman's boots.'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Journeyman's boots are what you seek? Ha!! Those I have upon my feet and disintegrate will they if my life is taken. Extra pair have I, and, possibly, [rare trade] can we make.'

You say, 'What rare trade?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Three things I call for and journeyman boots are yours. A [shadowed rapier], [ring of the ancients] and gold... 3250 gold coins I call for !! This trade I call.'

You say, 'What shadowed rapier?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Shadowed men, foes to all, have appeared. Many lands do they walk. Invisible are they, but for the items they wield. Seek them out and return to me a shadowed rapier. Return it with haste before 'poof' goes the rapier!! No time to camp have you.'

You say, 'What ring of the ancients?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Ancient cyclopes [sic] do march the land. Long have they lived and crafted the rings of the ancients. I must have one and you shall go and fetch one for me. Seek the lands of the oldest cyclops clans. Seek the plains, seek the island in tears and search the dunes for there is one who is last. His clan was blown from the sands.'

Give Hasten the Shadowed Rapier, the Ring of the Ancients, and 3250 gold (or 325 platinum)

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'The time to trade has come!! I am now rich and you are now fast. Take the journeyman boots and run like the wind.'

You receive: Journeyman's Boots

Wow, I find this quite funny. After over a 2 year break from EQ, I came back. Made an SK and began powering, chose South Ro for the 10 - 13 levels, and as I turn around from cleaning out the derv camp who do I see but the one and only Ancient Cyclops.

Jboots have always been great, ever since I got mine on my old rogue from over a 20 hour camp I've been in love with them. Can't wait to get this pair on my SK.

EDIT: Wanted to add that he showed up about 5 minutes after we killed the named Taziz ghoul. So I believe that might be right, what one of the previous posters said.

AC in SRo

I was running through South Ro on my way to the Oasis to kill Arthikus for the Marr's Ring of Piety quest when I bumped into the AC. He was dark blue to my lvl 33 Paladin so I gave it a shot. I had to use LoH but killed him without too much fuss and now the ring is mine.

Not bad considering I wasn't even looking for it!

To top things off I then killed Arthikus and he dropped the item I was looking for first time! I guess everyone has to have a good day once in a while...

Sorry about the "Typo's" (above) but I was literally asleep at the mouse.

Note...

1) Camped South Ro for 40 hours in all this week trying to get a spawn. This technique worked for me big time.

2) Camped OoT for more than 40 hours over 5 levels to get spawn 1 time ... I ran off to heal using Paladin Spells ... He DESPAWNED on me. (At this time I uninstalled the game and have just now returned to play 12 months later. Yes I was more than mad.)

3) Killed "a Drake" each time it spawned.

4) There is another potential spawn after Drake and Hasten and Maldyn ... Brother Zephyl (I did not see him, but I heard he is high level so be careful. CON first, attack second :)

Good Luck and remember always carry along a Dwarf with you, they are small and sturdy. But more importantly, they make great mob distractions.

With respect, none of these are involved in getting the A. Cyclops to Spawn.

No, this is to get Hasten to spawn, not the AC.

There are also Fabled Journeyman's Boots left over from a special quest. You can buy them in the Bazaar on the F. V. Server, but I'm not sure if they are No-Drop on other servers.

In Sol A, you can buy Travellers Boots from the same gnome that sells Tinkerer Bags. I believe they cost 5250pp with max charisma, same as the bags. The only difference is that Tboots have a casting time, so you cant click them while running (unless you are a bard).

I have been searching for this quest for a while now and i have finally found it but here are some things i am very confused about

1.. you see him running in rathe and u hail him and say all the things to get the quest started blahh blahh blahh.

2.. then you get all the pieces the AC ring the shadow rapier and then u give him the money

3.. but what i do not understand is why i see people post it on this website that they droppped the rapier on the ground first it is very wierd why dont they just give it to him lol??

4.. Also i have heard of the 325gp 10x method or the straight 325 pp which one works??

5.. i wanted to know in order what do u give him first to complete the quest??

6.. and last i have heard that after u give him the money he runs away from u and u have to catch him again to get the boots is this true?

can someone please help me i always wondered which methods worked best please post A.S.A.P
THANK YOU

PS. if you look up on the quest on the very top of the page it says you give him the money he talks like yoda and runs really fast will he give you the boots before he runs away or do you have to catch him ?????

These are the only steps I do for this quest. No other steps are necessary. This is the order I do them in too.

1. Get the Ring of the Ancients from 'an ancient cyclops'. More common and easier kill in South Ro desert but have killed him a few times in Ocean of Tears on the island west of sister island.

2. Go beat on shadowed men until you get a shadowed rapier. Click on link above for their locations as there are quite a few of them. I tend to go to the West Commonlands camp myself. NOTE: This is a NORENT item so it will disappear eventually when you log.

3. Grab moola. 3250gp is what he asks for. See my post below about that. He WILL take 325pp.

4. I park the toon I want to have it in Rathe Mountains. Or tell a buddy to sit there afk until I get him to spawn.

5. Get a tracker (I use my druid) and wait for his spawns. PH's are 'a drake', 'Maldyn the Unkempt', and 'Brother Zyphel'. Drakes are fairly low and maldyn doesn't give any faction hits for killing him. Brother Z needs some high lvl peeps to take out. Best to just come back the next day. Doesn't seem to despawn like the other PH's do.

NOTE: You don't really need a tracker. Hasten and his PHs all follow the same path. Do what I did and follow him around for a spawn. Makes life much easier.

Hasten and his PH's have 3 spawn points. 2 of them just sw and nw of the building on top of HG hill. 1 on the sw lower part of the hill.

6. Either have SoW or hope you can catch him on the path run. You could nab him on the hill but I don't recommend it as HG adds tend to be annoying. Hailing him is the only way to get him to stop moving (besides attacking, snaring or whatever of course then ya can't do the quest). Once ya got him stopped keep hailing him periodically whilst you move your alt, toon, buddy, customer over to where hes at.

7. Chances are your MQ (multiquesting) it and if so just give the ring to Hasten first and have the person who you want to have it give the last 2 items (shadowed rapier and 325pp). Let me repeat that 325pp does work. I didn't try it for a long time because I didn't want to risk it. If your worried, bring 325pp and 3250gp. Thats what I did. Once you try the pp method and are confident it works you wont bother with gp again.

Voila your toon, alt, friend, customer now is slightly speedy for limited amounts of time whenever they want as long as its cast outdoors.

**EDITED** I have done 14 MQ jboot turn ins 11 using the 3250gp method and 3 using the 325pp method. Got the boots every attempt. My last one I did yesterday (08/07/04) was using the 325pp method.

Did the quest today for an alt on 2nd account. Wondered about the 325pp method so decided to give it a try today (done it 10+ times with the 3250gp method). Gave the ring with my high lvl druid, then the 325pp and shadowed rapier with my low lvl alt. Received the jboots no problem.
Best . . . . Spawn . . . EVAH!
# Jun 28 2004 at 10:19 AM Rating: Decent
Following the SMASH ALL UNDEAD rule of thumb, I was able to spawn the AC 3 times, on 3 consecutive EQ Nights. Each night he spawned between 12am and 2am. Not sure iof this is a rule or just a coincidence.

The first time is the only time I didn't kill him, although i did spawn him. I was on my level 22 alt, and we just happened to kill a crypt mummy to try and get a weapon. We killed him and then headed east, the AC spawned directly on top of me. I ran to zone, tried to log my Druid on, but my client crashed, and 5 minutes later when I logged back in, he was gone.

But now I was pissed at Sony for making such a crappy game that it would crash and cost me something like the AC.

So I kept my druid, waited for night to roll around again, and with the aid of BoBo, slayed EVERY SINGLE UNDEAD in the dessert area. At about 1am, the AC popped again, in the exact same spot. Well now I was happy, I got my ring, and was telling the guild and friends. Then my best friend logged in and we did it again. Same procedure, same spawn spot, same time.

I did kill every undead in zone, but before each AC spawn i did kill one of the "strange named" undead mobs, a crypt mummy, shriveled mummy. Although I'm not sure Shriveled mummy counts, they would spawn 3 or 4 at a time for me, so not that rare. The other "named" would ONLY spawn 1 at a time.

Also, the AC spawned In his OWN SPOT. He ALWAYS SPAWNS in the dead center of the valley in teh NE corner of the zone. All 3 times he pops about 50 feet in the air and falls to the vally, it's so deep, you can't see him in it until he walks up and out of it. Unless you are in it waiting for him like me and my friend. Since he spawned there 3 times in a row, I would say it's safe to assume that is his spawn. I've never seen lesser mobs spawn there.

Actually, ive seen him spawn on the far east of the desert, near the dark elfie camp and the far west. Dunno why it did the same for you every time. I tend to watch the dark elfie camp since they WILL kill him (and im not happy about that one time they did).

I tend to focus on just killing the rares in the desert. Sometimes the spiders too when im feeling ambitious.
325pp not guaranteed to work!!
# Jun 24 2004 at 9:05 PM Rating: Decent
I went to Hasten tonight to get my JBoots. Had the rapier, the ring of the ancients, and 325pp (which quite a few people here have said works). I should have known better though. He spawned, caught him, gave him the rapier, the ring and the 325pp, and NOTHING!! No GM online to petition either. But regardless, he/she probably would have told me I did the quest wrong and wouldn't have helped me.

It's not the end of the world, but it's VERY FRUSTRATING!! Unless you want to risk losing your stuff, DO NOT USE PLATINUM!!!!

PP works fine instead of GP; I've always used PP when a quest called for GP and it's always worked including this quest. There must be a different reason why your turn-in failed.

The torn parchment replaced the jboots that used to drop in najena, it is something that directs you to this quest for those that thought it could be found in najena. Its not needed at all to do the quest.

SOE SUCKS! This used to be a game in which the programers took responsibility for using us to trouble shoot their code. Hence the reason behind the GMs and the petition proccess. Now, there are few if ANY GMs on - and the automated set up allows them to fix the error and ***** the player even further.

IF you give hasten MORE than 3250 in gold, by so much as a single gold coin, he keeps it all. HAve fun going after another AC ring 32+ hours.

The speedy gnome will stop after you Hail him successfully. I timed it and he turned and left 1:20 after the last Hail. So this is how long you have to work between Hails, 1 minute 20 seconds.

I parked the receiving character at the spot in the pass where I expected to catch Hasten. With my other character I hailed the gnome, turned in the ring, dropped the no-rent shadowed rapier on the ground, then sat and Hailed him as I camped. Immediately logged in the receiving character, picked the rapier up off the ground, turned in the rapier and 325 PP, and received my new booties. It's risky but it works.

The turnin to Hasten Bootstrutter can fail. I've done this quest many times and had one failure at turnin. The player we had set up to get the boots had Spirit of Eagle cast on her to help her catch Hasten. When we got him stopped and did the turnin she was in front of Hasten but high above him. When I turned in the ring and she turned in the shadowed rapier and the gold she got nothing. With this in mind you probably should have any lev spell clicked off before you do your turnin, I lost the ring and she lost her gold.

I to had a failed atemp at this turn in but my char had all the items him self. I /petioned it and went on my way rathere upset. About 2 weeks latter I guide sent me a tell and he sent it to a GM the next day a GM contacted me and he gave my char a new ring and I went and did the turn-in and had my J-boots.

# May 06 2004 at 11:51 AM Rating: Decent
The lev is probably not the reason for the failed turn in (not saying it isn't possible), if the trade window opened it should be ok. It is more likely that it failed because it was multiquested... While multiquesting does work sometimes it is not supported as far as SoE goes and CS will most likely laugh at you if you petition about it.

I am all for MQing to save time but go into it knowing I am risking the turn in items.
OLD Days on RZ
# May 05 2004 at 6:58 PM Rating: Decent
These things were the source of endless conflicts on RZ in the old days...

The camp for the AC would be a free-for-all spot. NO ONE held the locations for very long. Corpses everywhere in SRo and OoT.

Once you had the ring, you went to cash in the ring and rapier AND 3250gp in Rathe Mountains. You can't run very well with 3250gp on ya, you know? PK's would just sit and control the entry points into Rathe and pick you off. EASY 3250gp. That was when 3250gp was ALOT of money. Nowadays it ain't caca...

But if you perservered and had a pre-nerf pumice (a crystallized pumice!) you were GOLDEN against getting rooted, snared and killed. You just kept clicking away on the pumice and the boots and ran ran ran.

Good ol' days indeed.
He doesnt spawn in SK or EK
# May 05 2004 at 1:39 PM Rating: Decent
The AC never spawned in SK and they removed the EK spawn point as it was linked to the Magician epic, hence he spawned a whole lot.
Spawn Times
# May 05 2004 at 11:43 AM Rating: Decent
The Ancient Cyclops in OOT is a 6 minute spawn. His PH are an aqua goblin, a pirate, a cyclops and broog bloodtoe. He takes AAAAGES to show up.
Took me 16 hours... All spawn in exactly the same loca.

Hasten himself is also a 6 minute spawn, PH being mainly 'a drake', but also maldyn the unkempt and someone else but i forget who... a monk i think.

This quest has taken way too long for me to be happy... i'm camping Hasten right now. Good luck.
RE: Spawn Times
# Jun 10 2004 at 9:04 PM Rating: Decent
I camped the AC in OOT today and it took a straight 18 1/2 hours for him to pop. I am not on a PvP server but did have to deal with a camp stealer...sure was an awful lot of work and agrivation...at this point I do not see that it was worth all the trouble. Will see if I still feel that way after I get the rapier and turn in done and actually get to use the boots instead of buying sow potions all the time. Not sure what it is going to be like getting an 11th level DE Cleric in to do the turn in to Hasten either...Looks like it may be tricky from the other posts I am reading.

well considering there is still a dropable item involved, the quest is MQable. Even if that were not the case, <there are only two no drops involved, and one dropable> then you would only need the person getting the mq to have one of the no drop items... it's obvious to me that you either haven't done much multiquesting, or just never knew that the shadowed rapier is dropable and no rent.

silly you.

WAY too many camps
# Mar 11 2004 at 7:02 AM Rating: Decent
Ok here is my input on the AC. OoT is probably the best(and worst) place to wait on A.C. It is a static spawn and the only one on the island. He is VERY random. I have sat for 17 hours before he appeared and have seen him 2 times in 2 hours..... go figure. There is no competition with other toon trying to K.S. ya since it is a camp. I have done him with a 47 Druid and with my Necro. LOL I have had to get boots for all my non SoW toons and for the wifes:) If you go there from 46 or 47 to around 51 the exp isnt altogether bad either.(as in OoT he is higher lvl)
On a side note...I did 2 MQ in early March, and it seems they have changed the pathing and staying time for the Hasten ph. Bro Z despawned within 20 min and Hasten never went to the Ferrott zone area before he despawned:( Good luck on your boots:) I feel that it is well worth the time invested, especially sice the boots proc at lvl 1;) YAY Verant:)
my take on this quest
# Mar 11 2004 at 1:44 AM Rating: Decent
first off...i've tried the ocean of tears camp and it is the MOST boring camp i've ever sat at....watch the boat come....watch the boat go...kill ph'r...rinse and repeat...actually had trouble staying awake. never done either of the karana camps and quite frankly never heard of anyone getting the AC in either place. south ro is the spot for me if i'm looking for the AC...at least you can run aropund killing things and collecting silks, zombie skins, essence of sunlights etc...all of which can be sold in the bazaar and you can test your staying power seeing how many people you can outlast waiting for the spawn...hehehe. i've heard all the theories about killing th undead, moldrak drin etc. i never saw it make a bit of difference either way. it IS a random spawn period....i've zoned in ( before ldon) and saw him standing there waiting to be slain...nobody else in the zone killing anything. other times i've spent hours there waiting. the only thing that i've read that holds any bearing of truth whatsoever about the AC spawn is maybe that it spawns at night but that is doubtfull also as i';ve also seen him at 8pm.
cost of this MQ is 4-5k on mithaniel marr but i once recieved 20k from someone for it...ooc'd it for 4k in the bazaar...had someone send me a tell that they would give me 20k for it..im like ummm, give me the 4k and we'll be on our way..we do the quest and sure enough she gave me the other 16k...true story...maybe they were on the siblings account and didnt care about the plat i dont know....all in all 4-5k isnt a bad chunk of plat but it really depends on the amount of time spent getting it done.

jboots are nice for lower level chars...got em on all my low level non sowing chars...necro, warrior, rogue.........getting them for a low lvl char is great until getting to lvl 51 and getting run3.

good luck to you all that do this quest.
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 12 2004 at 7:24 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) First of all, I used to go and make the AC spawn in south ro, and he is not a static spawn. He can be triggered. I was shown one day by a high lvl necro. With just him, 60 necro, me a 51 monk and a lvl 46 war, we spawned him in 30min, then repeated 4 times afterwards to get my guildies each a set of boots. And it has nothing to do with the undead or dead. They just keep him from popping. Its the alive stuff that works, but only two of the live stuff. Have fun and figure it out.

I have done this quest several times but it is so speratic i am just off and buying Travel boots from the gnomes in Sol A. Faster and easier to get. ya it 5250 plat but hay it about the same. only problem is 1.5 casting time but i will live with the problem.

I replied to a message which has profanity in the title, edited it out in mine, and pointed out that Tboots are available to buy, if Jboots quest is too frustrating to some.

Now that LDoN has come out, lots of the higher lvls while waiting for a group run out and kill the SGs and spiders out in South Ro. and since LDoN I ahve killed the AC 3 times without camping him.

I can't belive it.. what server is that on? I been camping the AC for weeks in S ro off and on and I got nothing. Either pk's(i play on RZ) log on and kill me or just see a bunch of SG's 8-\.. I wish Sony or Verant (whoever fixxes bugs) would fix this quest so the AC would spawn alot more. I don't think I can waste much more of my eq playing time in s ro waiting AC.

Ok, They havent nerfed these beacause i got them in 2 days. I spent a whole night trying to get AC to spawn in South Ro, he never spawned. I slept nearly all day because i stayed up all night, and when i logged back on, i killed the necro by the tower, and then saw the AC walking down a nearby sand dune. Not sure if necro had anything to do with it. Rapier is easy to get in lavastorm. Me, a lvl 40 pally, and a lvl 45 pally stayed between the valley and giant camp waiting for the gnome to come by. Saw Brother whats his name go by, he stayed up for 15 mins or so, killed a few mobs that walked by us, and he popped. He rooted that fast *** gnome and i turned the stuff in. I am now a running a little faster on my way to gain exp.
