It is advised to get the Quest items prior to looking for Hasten in Rathe as he will despawn after a certain amount of time and getting him to spawn in the first place can take hours with bad luck.`

The Shadowed Rapier is a TEMPORARY item that drops from "a shadowed man," found in several zones. Since it's TEMPORARY, it's best to get this last.

The Ring of the Ancients drops from "an ancient cyclops," found in Ocean of Tears and Southern Desert of Ro. In the Ocean of Tears, the AC spawns on the seafury cyclops island and can spawn in place of any of the seafuries. The Southern Desert of Ro AC has a much more intriciate spawn mechanic that can be found on his bestiary page.

You will also need the equivalent of 3250 Gold for the turnin. (325 Platinum works).

Hasten Bootstrutter is a semi-rare spawn in Rathe Mountains. He, or any of the mobs on his spawn cycle will spawn in the Northeast section of the map in the area where Hill Giants are found approximately every 6 minutes(provided they are kept down). Once any of these NPCs or Hasten spawns they will begin roaming throughout the zone where after running their route they will despawn and a new mob will spawn. If you set up camp at the little valley leading into the Hill Giant area every placeholder or Hasten will roam right past you provided they aren't killed by another player.

NPCs that are PHs for Hasten listed in order of how often they pop: Spawns are at exactly 4m 45sec cycles.
a drake
a grizzly bear
Brother Zephyl
Maldyn the Unkempt

You say, 'Hail, Hasten Bootstrutter'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Stopped, I have. Greet you, I do. What business do we have? Hmm? Speak up!!'

You say, 'Journeyman's boots.'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Journeyman's boots are what you seek? Ha!! Those I have upon my feet and disintegrate will they if my life is taken. Extra pair have I, and, possibly, [rare trade] can we make.'

You say, 'What rare trade?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Three things I call for and journeyman boots are yours. A [shadowed rapier], [ring of the ancients] and gold... 3250 gold coins I call for !! This trade I call.'

You say, 'What shadowed rapier?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Shadowed men, foes to all, have appeared. Many lands do they walk. Invisible are they, but for the items they wield. Seek them out and return to me a shadowed rapier. Return it with haste before 'poof' goes the rapier!! No time to camp have you.'

You say, 'What ring of the ancients?'

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'Ancient cyclopes [sic] do march the land. Long have they lived and crafted the rings of the ancients. I must have one and you shall go and fetch one for me. Seek the lands of the oldest cyclops clans. Seek the plains, seek the island in tears and search the dunes for there is one who is last. His clan was blown from the sands.'

Give Hasten the Shadowed Rapier, the Ring of the Ancients, and 3250 gold (or 325 platinum)

Hasten Bootstrutter says 'The time to trade has come!! I am now rich and you are now fast. Take the journeyman boots and run like the wind.'

Just got my boots

A druid in my guild was getting the ring to MQ it for his chanter and me<grin> he helped me get the jboots today, he had the rapier and ring all I needed was the gold, which I had. After a while we found him cause of a friendly Monk who hailed him till we got there. Thanks again BTW. A little advice make sure you shout you need to do the quest, if anyone is hunting him they will usually let you since the jboots dont despawn him. Good luck.

This is for all my fellow Paladins and Warriors out there. I went to S Ro at 39th level looking for the AC. When I arrived, there were several other PCs in the 35-60 level range. There were Shaman and Necros running around killing every green in sight, trying to get the AC to spawn. And there were Druids and Rangers just waiting for him to pop up on track. So I knew from the start that the odds were against me.

I tried to solo an SG and he kicked my butt, so I just dug in and waited for the AC to spawn. After 3 hours that first night, I had not seen or heard any sign of the AC. The next night, I waited to log on until later (around 12am CST) and noticed the zone had a lot fewer people. Around 1 am, the crowd really thinned out and there were times when there were only 2-3 others there. Finally, the AC pops! I saw him far off in the distance and started running. But I had no sow so by the time I reached him, a high level Ranger had already engaged. Sadly, I watched the AC die, the Ranger kneel over, and the corpse disappear. I knew I needed a different strategy.

I left S Ro and the quest behind for a while, and leveled up to 40th.

Then I went back to S Ro. This time, I hailed a friendly Shaman along the way, and she kindly mixed a sow potion for me. I made a hot key for the item, so I could swig a sow potion as soon as I saw the AC. And I decided not to even waste my time when the zone was too crowded. I spent another 2 hours one day with no sign of the AC. But I did talk to a Warrior who said he had seen him twice and got KSed both times. That's when I added the final part of my strategy.

Well last night (around midnight real-time), I was just standing around on a dune when he popped again. This time, much closer to me. I right-clicked my sow potion and started towards him. But then I noticed another guy fighting him. Ugggg! I targeted the guy to see who he was, and it was "a Dervish Thug". What? No PC had attacked him yet! I ran over and slashed the Cyclops. He forgot about the Derv and aggroed on me. Then I bolted, running full speed to the far South end of the zone. I turned around now and then to make sure that some Wizard hadn't peeled him off me. When I reached the South of the zone (hopefully far away from KSing casters) I wheeled around and started pounding on him. About 30 seconds later, a Ranger showed up. I click another hot key I had made. "/shout I'm on the AC!!! No KSing Please!". He was 50th level so he possibly could have KSed me, but had the decency to stand back and just watch. So I finished off the AC (he got me down to about half my hps), looted the ring, and thanked everyone in the zone for not interfering.

I ran to WC and killed a few Shadowed Men, but no rapier dropped and a friend told me Hasten wasn't up, so I logged. This morning when I logged on, the first SM I killed drop the rapier, so I ran to the FP Bank to get some gold, then ran to Rathe (long run from FP!), found Hasten, turned in the items. And now I have a new pair of Journeyman's Boots prominently located in inventory slot #1.

So if you're a tank, and plan to solo this quest in S Ro, my advice is 1) Be patient, I camped the AC for a total of 10-12 long boring hours. 2) Find yourself a dune over near the undead tower and derv camp and keep your eyes peeled. 3) Camp the AC during off-peak hours. 4) Get some sow potions and be ready to drink one as soon as he pops. 5) Once he aggros on you, train him far South away from the desert. 6) If anyone shows up, shout for them not to KS.

Sorry this is so long. But maybe it will help. Good Luck.

I camped the AC for about 30 to 45 mins, killed "a ghoul" and "crypt mummy", also killed that sandgiant hassan as soon as I got to zone. Shortly after i killed the crypt mummy, the AC popped on track and I ran to kill it, some high level was already beating on it, I nuked it and killed it but he had more dmg, but was nice and let me loot after i explained i'd been camping it.

You could probably take him, although you might have to use LoH. He conned blue to my Paladin at 39th. But when he pops in S Ro, the least of your worries will be the AC himself.

1) S Ro usually has some high level Druids and Rangers who want the ring for and alt, or some extra cash. With sow and track, they will always get to the AC first unless he pops right on top of you.

2) If you do happen to get to the AC first, some high level caster may come along and KS him. This quest tends to bring out the worst in some people.

If you go to S Ro to get the ring, go with the same attitude you have when you buy a lottery ticket. Don't have any expectations of winning, and you won't be to dissapointed.

Good Luck

Just wanted to let the rest of Norrath know that almost 4000 gold pieces is the equivalent to 100 pounds of extra weight. Unfortunately, I never scheduled enough calisthenics classes when I attended Mage School so I guess it's off to SolA to find the Gnome Mining Company and buy mine there.

Darn. I was so looking forward to fighting off KSer's in OOT and SRo.

I had a great time getting my Jboots for my Necro. I went into Sro to hunt SG's with a friend, my friend left so I was just running around collecting silks and such for crafts. Ran into a LVL 57 chanter doing the same, and offered to give them to her, because you know I kiss high level rear. I asked her if she was waiting for the AC to pop to grab the ring, and she said it was mine if it poped. I was LVL 30 at the time and was not ready to face it alone, but within 10 mins the AC poped, and I get a tell from the chanter to meet her at merchants, I run down there, i get invited into group with chanter and her husband. They killed AC in about 45 seconds, and told me i could loot ring. *cheer*

Went to EC to inquire if anyone had a shadowed rapier i could but, and I get a tell for a girl whose husband was in lavastorm and killing shadowed men, told me to run over there and see if he had found one, when i got there he was just looting one. *cheer*

At this point I hadn't paided a cent and was feeling rather full of myself. I shouted for a port to NK, and told a druid that I would give him 30pp for port and for him to help me track hastens and to keep me sowed. I shouted in Rathe mtns to see if anyone had seens NPC of had him on track, and I get his loc, turns out a monk was just about to kill him for some quest, but he sat there are hailed him untill I got there. It was the easiest quest I have ever completed! *cheer*

I have been trying to figure out a quick way to get this ring, my frinds and I have aquired it 4 times. I was there for 3 of them. Of cousrse I have the boots. My question/comment is that each one is averaging about 13 hours. Does this seem right?

There is no quick way to doing this, its all about luck.

In south ro its luck in seeing him first and doing the most dmg.

In ocean of tears its luck in even seeing him.

I have camped him 3 times now, first time took 11 and a half hours, 2nd time took 4 hours, and the 3rd time which i just got today 8) took just under 12 hours, only camped him in oot because south ro is just a big ks fest.

On friday I took 2 groups of guildies to Sro and we OWNED the zone. Killed everything in the desert, almost so nothing was spawned. (we had everyone pull trains to the wizzie who AoE'd and killed them all) after about 3 hours of ownage we got the AC and kicked his ***** Then the server went down and only 4 people came back on so we had to end the raid. Anyway if you can get a group of friends and make a list of who gets the ring in what order try this, it worked well

Alright~ first of all~ im not saying i have any secret or anything~ second, im not even done with this stupid quest (hasten has eluded me for the past 2 nights~ ill try to find him in the morning i suppose) but anyhow~ i got that AC to spawn in about an hour and a half~ i dont think thats half bad~ i didnt do any of that "kill the undead at the tower" or "kill all undead in the desert before 10 o clock" or whatever that BS is~ i simply killed everything in the desert~ i was one of 3 people there when it popped~ the other two both being under L10~ i would suppose i was the one who caused it to pop from this~ well anyhow~ that damn thing... i killed like 10,000 spiders (hehehe~ i dont like spiders~ they gimme the chills in RL) and any undead that agroed mainly before it spawned~ i left the dervs pretty much alone, same with everything in the foresty part~(oh ya, i was in ro~ /giggle)
so i dunno~ i figure you should prolly shoot for the spiders~ and i THINK (not KNOW)that seeing sand giants is a good sign~ the last kill i had before the AC popped was some guy named Hasam or something (named sand giant) and then the AC popped behind me about 30 seconds later~ soooooo~ in short~ meTHINKS spiders and undead are targets but dont hold me to that~ lotsa luck to all~ =) hope you all get Jboots if you want em~

Uh, I think you should get your keyboard looked at, probably even replaced. It's placing a tilde (~) after all the sentences when I know you were intending to type a period (.)

You see the difference, right? One means the sentence is over and the other is just a weird symbol the Spaniards like to place over their n's. Maybe should go look up which is which.

I spent 4 hours hunting the elusive AC tonight. I basically did the same thing. I went out and killed everything. The first time (after about 2 hours) I noticed that the AC also spawned a few minutes after someone took Hasan down. I caught him right in front of the eastern Derv camp. That should have been the end of it but I was KS'd by some rude people. So another 2 hours and endless kills. The second time he was wandering east from the NW corner of the zone. I'm not sure when he spawned or if Hasan was up previous to the AC spawn. Fortunately I had him all to myself that time.

Finally Got My Ring
# Mar 15 2002 at 3:10 AM Rating: Default
I play on Vallon Zek first of all. I had logged on my main to check what was goin on in South Ro, since that's where alot of people in my range like to hang out (camping the AC, on their way to LGuk etc). I check the zone and spot a few people I had fought before. I then begin to med/buff up for a fight.

I check to see if they're still in zone and I notice an 8 lvls higher (highest possible in range) troll shaman also in zone. I began to track a blue pet I had believed to be the necro's I was hunting down, but just my luck, it was the shaman's pet.

He saw me and immediatly jumped up and began to cast upon me. We fought a lil but when I saw I could barly dent the big fellow, I high tailed it out of there, towards the derv camp.

I medded/healed up a bit to continue my original goal (to pk the necro and his pals). I check track for the necro's pet and I see "An Ancient Cyclops". He Conned light blue to a 45, and I figured someone had already had gotten to him.

I spot the troll medding, but then I see the AC behind him...unattacked :). I circle behind the troll without him noticing and engage with the AC. I used up the last of the bit of mana I had on him, trying to deal as much damage as I could to him to ensure I couldn't get KSed. Once he was at half I pulled him away from the troll, to a secluded area, to make sure noone interfered.

I finished him off and when he fell, I saw the ring and was overcome with joy. That fight was so intense it felt as if I was going to have a heart attack, lol, what an adrenoline rush.

I begin to rant about my victory against the AC to the others in the zone, only to get flooded with responses of "stfu" from the others. :p

I proudly began to march out of South Ro but right before I did, I see the necro I had orginally planned on killing. I decide to let him go this time since I wanted to go to the bank to get my gold and complete the quest.

It was one heck of a day, and I'll never forget it. :)

How to kill AC!
# Mar 13 2002 at 11:57 PM Rating: Default
First, you go to your character select screen. Click on create a character and start an SK. =) I prefer Iksar, but you can pick which ever race you like. Then you hunt to lvl 55. (at 55 you get your HT discipline) Then, you go to OOT and camp AC. He spawns one every 2 hours or so. PH's are on a 6 minute timers. When AC pops, just HT him. That should get him to about half or maybe a little bit lower, then melee him a bit and BAM.. AC is yours... =) Happy hunting and remeber Patience is a Virtue....

P.S. This post was intended to be a joke, if anyone takes it other then that... they should reconsider the priorities of life. But in all honesty my best friend plays a lvl 59 SK and he's bagged AC 17 times. =) Don't believe me.. send him a tell.. Midious on the Fennin Ro server...

SEEEEEE YA!

I just got the ring of the ancients from the cyclopse. I stayed up all night because there were no guilds getting it for their younger mates and no one at all was on. I managed to get the ring in under 5 hours of walking around killing stuff. Killing stuff did absolutly nothing for me I think. The guy spawned before 3am eq time and I killed him shortly after he spawned (sgs or terrorspider thingey spawned at the exact same time at different parts of the zone, I think each has their own corner). Lvl 34 necro (human) not twinked or anything managed to kill him by a thread. He has a very high fire resist, so for all you necros thinking about this quest, he resisted every boil blood I attempted (three) but he never resisted dooming darkness (two), invoke fear (two), or VoS (one). Well, managed to do the hard part, now im just about 20pp short on the 3250 gp ;p and I used to give shadowed rapiers to my pet. Later.
God Bless Jboots
# Mar 08 2002 at 6:42 PM Rating: Decent
I recently completed the Jboots quest and must say that these boots are probably one of my favorite items. Being a warrior, soloing has always been a fairly dangerous task. No longer :) In the last week or so that I've owned these boots they've saved my skin atleat 5 times. Over time, I'm sure these boots will save me atleast 10k in SoW potions and are considerably more convenient.
I was luckier than most when it comes to getting the ring from da AC. I was running through SRO when I stumble upon AC! So I ooc to see if he's camped. no responses (except someone who wanted his loc so they could kill him). So I smush him. Down he goes. I gaff his ring and run to WC to smush some Shadowed Men. Now, these Shadowed Men are usually quite greedy when it comes to their rapiers. I guess they were feeling generous that day. After about 5 minutes I get a rapier. Next it's off to Rathe Mountains to find Mr. Bootsrutter to get myself some new booties. Due to the fact I can't track, I decided my best option was to run around trying to find him. I decided I might aswell start where there's things to kill. First off i went to the Blessed and took his shield, then to the Wicked for Woe and Envy (all 3 items are part of Shammy epic). Now a Shammy friend is 3steps closer to his epic.
Next I was running to the Giant Valley when I stumbled upon a silly little Gnome. I gave him a new ring, rapier and 3250 gp and in return got a new pair of boots. In the end, my Jboots cost 350pp (25pp for port to NK) and about 1hour. Most definately worth it. If anyone would like some help with this quest on Terris-Thule I'd be more than willing to lend a hand.
Luck in battle,

BTW-Just so you know, Hasten stole these boots. So you're buying stolen merchandise ;)

How to avoid KS'd AC's
# Mar 07 2002 at 8:03 AM Rating: Default
This is a common problem it seems... higher levels with no heart or respect for other players. It happened to me yesterday by Lastlin (of Tunare server) who despite me having clearly agro'd the AC (2 resists and a successful root while its hitting me and I hitting it). He layed into DD on it.

Fool was on my behalf for believing in common decency. It conned light blue to 44 Shaman and I was stupid enough to NOT start with DD spells...

My advice to anyone who can is to DD the AC as fast as you can to under half its health... then do as you will.
Quite how Melee classes can do this quest is beyond me when people like this exist.

Good luck to everyone, and dont KS.

p.s. The KS agree'd that he had KS'd me in /say and /ooc......

Yeah, the same thing happened to me on the Tribunal. A couple of losers named Roladene and Kivaan KS'd me after I'd engaged the AC. I was standing toe to toe when I hear Kivaan just yell out "He's KSable!". I don't know whether he was looking for justification or was just hoping I was gullible enough to believe it. Anyway, being a warrior I had no chance against their spells. A nice necro named Suddan saw what happened and backed me up when I petitioned, but the GM says (of course) it's basically our word against theirs. But there is a silver lining. Bout 2 hours later AC spawned again and I was the only one around.

It is very rare when someone does NOT try to KS tha AC. It has getten better now that horses are available but it still happens.

About petitioning on getting KSed on the AC, don't bother. You have less then a 99.9% chance that they will do anything about it. And even less chance that you will get a ring even if they do something. Most likely the best you can hope for is a Guide giving them a verbal warning and sending them on their way (which is like being slapped on the wrist with a feather).

But dont want to get KSed? Be a 60 Ranger. hehe. I have yet to find a player that could get to the AC fast enough to do 50% before I could. ;-)

Started camping the AC at 10am GMT,I killed 34 Cyclops,7 Pirates,6 Boog Mudtoes and 5 Aqua Goblins, Bye this time it was 6pm, And had to log.
I handed over the camp to another player who was waiting. After Logging back on that same player was still there, he said that he had no luck and he would be logging if no show in 1 hour, So I decided to wait, he handed back the camp as promised at 9pm and I continued my efforts.
Now my connection cuts off every 2 hours precisely, thats something most UK users have to put up with, this involves logging off, exiting all screens and closing EQ. Disconnect and reconnect to ISP and restart EQ. the whole process takes about 3 minutes (you just hope that no one steals your camp in the meantime).
Anyways Time was realing on and at 2am the following day I decided my eyes were red enough and that after the next spawn I would finally call it a day,.. At which time I noticed A GM run past, He sat down not to far from me, I hailed him, but got no answer, then he Invised. Mmmm I thought, I wonder what he is doing here? he was just sitting there invisible for about 10 mins doing nothing ?(I could not see him with See invis cast on myself, but I had him on track and he wasn't moving) then he dissapered from track. Joking to my Guild I said he would probaly appear as the AC, we all digressed on the subject he he, I only had 5 minutes left before auto cut-off and was saying my farwells to the guild and POP the AC... my heart was racing, can I drop him before I go LD? I rooted him and blasted him with all the DD I had memmed (no time for DoTs) He drops.... I loot and within 30 seconds my connection cuts off ... YEEE HARRRRR Made a very long day worthwhile :)
