Kyralynn can be found in the Barbarian Fishing Village.

You say, ‘Hail Kyralynn’

Kyralynn says, ‘Hello, ! I am the shaman Kyralynn. If you have banded armor, my husband Vrynn and I can form it into a new shaman armor using this totem and some reagents for the ritual. I can use a banded [bracer], [mail], [helm] or [cloak] to form this new armor.’

You say, ‘helm’

Kyralynn says, ‘The helm requires a banded helm, 1 ground dufrenite, a glacier bear pelt, and an ogreskin chamois from a lizard page.’

  1. Banded Helm
  2. Ground Dufrenite
  3. Glacier Bear Pelt (from glacier bear in Everfrost cave) and
  4. Ogreskin Chamois (from lizard page in Cazic)

Dufrenite is occasionally, although rarely, dropped by carrion ghouls in Unrest and Clockworks in Solusek's eye and also can be purchased in the magic shops in various cities including Halas, W Karanas, Rivervale, Grobb and Ogguk for 150 to 200 pp each depending upon your faction and charisma. The ogre shamen in the camp on the other side of the lake will crush/grind/powder it for you. Banded armor is made with the blacksmithing skill.

I bagged this little bugger the other morning at 5am EST. Iwas going to Halas to buy some Alchemy components and decided to check the cave just for the hack of it. When I went there was one IB raoming counter clockwise so i figured the bear wasnt up, but went in towards the middle and cast sense animals anyway. BANG!! The elusive bear was up. I quickly swam out and bound myself by the hole, also putting an end to the pet i had summoned. I swam back in and went almost up the the first intersection. There I stopped, summoned pet, and cast Talisman of T'Narg and Regen on it. I then loaded, from top to bottom, Gate, Sense Animals, Malaisement, Listless Power, Tagar's Insects, Scourge, Shock of the Tainted, and Root. The bear was moving counter clockwise also so I went left and up to the round room to a spot where I could see both entrances to that room. I had no idea whether Lich was up and no intentions of tearing around the place to find out. The bear did go up by Sulon McMoor and then back down by the entrance to the room I was in. I kept the dog beside me to keep him from attacking until I was ready. As the bear went by me I cast Tagars Insects then ran back into the corner of the room. I turned around, sic the dog, and cast root. Since the frost based spells are useless I unleashed 3 blasts of Shock of the Tainted (225 DD poison based) before the root broke. By that time the bear was down to a little over 1 bubble left. He rushed me, swung 1 time then turned and ran. 1 final blast and he went down. I looted the pelt, Gated out by the hole and never lost 1 HP. Needless to say, the hardest part of the quest to this Shaman, having just broke into level 37, was patience and diligence in checking on the bear. I wouldnt recommend anyone trying this part till lvl 34. The bear was dark blue to me at 37 but never hit me. Root, slow, and poison DD is all you really need to defeat the monster. Good luck and look me up on the Povar server if you need help. Mdakintoo Shaman of the 37th

You have to give her GROUND Dufrenite, not regular. I've done this quest twice, and the info above in incorrect.

There's an ogre in the camp in the NE corner of the zone that will grind it for you.

First off keep Gate up at all times, the Lich does wander and is no joke. Head to the center area that has a broken teleporter with 2 Icebone spawns (#2 on EQAtlas map). This is where you set up camp. Now cast Sense Animal. If you don't get a Glacier Bear targeted he is not up and you'll need to kill the 2 wandering Icebone skelly PHs, log out and come back in 7-8 hours and cast Sense Animal again. (Doing this quest 3 times I've only had to clear the PHs once each time, and the first time 2 Glacier Bears pop'd). Waiting here you can see when the Lich and IBs walk by the room enterance, target the Lich and cast vision to watch where he goes if you want to be ultra safe. Easy to pull the IB into the room with a DD as they walk by. For this quest Sense animal and Vision are a great help.

Ogre Chamois
# Apr 27 2002 at 1:51 PM Rating: Default
The orge chamois drops outside CT at the temples. There is usually some high lvl there farming ravenscale from the rare mobs at each temple. The chamois is a fairly frequent drop, not everytime, but its hardly rare. The pages are light blue to my druid at lvl 36, and now light blue or green at 37. The item is no drop, so shammy must loot unless you plan on MQing the helm.I dont know if this works, but I am about to find out later today. I'll let you all know how it turns out!

Like the other stuff that dropped in the old C-T, it now (supposedly) dops in Feerott near the zone to C-T. I haven't seen this specific item drop there yet myself, but those are the rumors, and they're definitely true about much of the former C-T loot.

Greetings EQers

To let you know a few facts in regards to questing for this item:

1. you can Multi Quest for these items (if you have a friend who gets one piece and you get the others you can both compplete the quest together)

2. When hunting for the bear. I use Invis. to Undead potions. ONLY the bear will see you so be sure not to get too close if you are around 30th. But I would use them at entrance and wander in a little ways if nothing else was around except a couple of ice boned skeletons. I would kill them helps the spawn rate. Just avoid Lich and the other NPC in there (The bear never spawns over there anyways). Oh and ALWAYS have GATE handy.

3. Ogre Skin chamois has become much easier to obtain recently so no need to really talk about that. just take a few friends (maybe a bard or even SK) and you all can try to collect your items for your first armor upgrade together.

4. ANY race/class can do the quest. The helm is still easily sellable on Xev for 1200pp (I have sold a few to buy my other upgrades)

I may have said alot that was already listed here but I hope this was a small help

Yes, I did this quest with my 34th level druid on Tarrew Marr easily. The bear showed up on track a couple of weeks ago just after 6pm pacific time, I swam in, saw the lich's pet and 10 seconds later the bear walks by the pet. Finally went down this week and killed 4 or 5 pages and got the chamois. I have to wonder what the lizards polish with it? With indifferent faction and 100 cha the dufrenite was just under 160pp which I'd made in an hour hunting mammoths for tusks. Banded helm was a snap with 178 smithing. Ported from Halas to Feerott, ran to the ogres (Punga does ask for plural pieces but she talking ogre-like and will do a single piece no problem), levitated and camo'd, crossed the lake and got my helm. Prolly beginners luck.

I was a lvl 31 shammy rasing cash and exp in EF hunting momma mammoths. I had managed to secure the permafrost snowball the day before when a ranger shouted he had seen the bear on track. Quickly ran to bank to get fish scales (wanted to leave as much room for tusks) and gated back, headed into caves and stayed near entrance, then used sense animals to make sure he was still up. I knew not to wonder to far in so stayed near to entrance on the path bear takes (thnx to EQ Shaman site posting for info). Suddenly he turned the corner, so malised him and ran just inside the cave entrance tunnel. rooted him and dotted him (resistant to cold so dd was not worth using) and just kept dotting him, tim he was low then meleed him to death. He only took 2 bubs of health and 3 and half bubs mana so is quite easy at 31.

I was in Everfrost hunting mammoths for plat and waiting for my guild's perma raid (I can never get 'em to drop tusks when I need them, hehe) when I saw the glacier bear on track. Light blue so I thought, what the hell. The swim was easy (had enduring breath on, but probably didn't need it). The bear can occaisonally hit quite hard and resisted most of my weapon's procs (wakizashi of the frozen skies). I killed it and looted pelt without knowing what it was until I asked in /ooc and someone told me it was for this quest. My shammy friend should be happy if I can manage to do the rest of the quest :-)

Anyway, the really lucky part was backing away from the bear after I'd snared it... two seconds later, Lich and his pet walked straight through where I had been stood. So a word of warning, watch where those two wander, because boy they look nasty at my level (36). And one more thing, altho finding the cave is easy underwater, finding your way back to the ice hole can be hard work...
Medium?
# Mar 15 2002 at 3:03 AM Rating: Default
Even though Natsuko kinda covered this I feel I must elaborate. This quest calls for a medium banded helm. This item does not exist so please don't give any smiths a hard time when they tell you so. The item is called, simply, "Banded Helm." By medium all is meant is what races can equip it; the medium races. This has nothing to do with the SIZE: attribute either. Some of the banded pieces you will use in totemic armor are SIZE: SMALL. It doesn't matter. As long as the item is called only "Banded Helm," you are fine. A shaman took a big risk to prove this and it turns out I am right. So, if you can, when a smith tells you he can make medium banded helms and they don't say that, don't give him a hard time. Thank you.

All the mobs that were inside now spawn outside the temple. So it might actually be easier.

The mobs are all stuck together on each of the mini-temples outside the entrance to CT uberzone on that little "island" formed by the streams. You will still get mobbed if you try and take a page yourself, although they are much easier to get to now.

The Ogre, Punga will GRIND your dufrenite in Lake Rathe. Keep in mind that other ogres will crush and powder so don't mistake which one you need. If you hail them they will tell you which one they are. Also, don't confuse the Barbarians with the ogres. The barbarians in Lake Rathe are the ones you turn the quest items in to, but the ogres at the diagonal opposite end of the lake change your dufenrite stones. (One other item, the barbarian viilage was KOS to my ogre shammy, but the quest NPCs were indifferent.)

Can Rangers do this quest?
# Dec 13 2001 at 12:26 PM Rating: Default
Question- Since most, if not all, the items dropped for these various Totemic Armor quests are no drop, can another class complete the quest?

My main is a 37 ranger and I would have no problem completing these quests for one of my alt shaman.

So again, do I have to be a shaman to start this quest from Vrynn or Kralynn?
Its just "a banded helm", medium is confusing people

A banded helm is what you need, the "medium" part is confusing people. There is no "medium" named banded, just the regular "banded helm" is sized medium. Its only named something different if it is large or small sized in which cases it is named "large banded helm" or "small banded helm" respectively.

When an npc gives a quest they almost ALWAYS want the EXACT item that they say. In this case the barb quest givers in lake rathe say A BANDED MAIL, A BANDED HELM, etc because that is the EXACT name of the medium sized ones.

So no, a "SMALL banded helm" or a "LARGE banded helm" won't work because it is not what they ask for.

You make this, the "banded helm", in the cities of medium wearing races. Those cities are freeport, neriak, kelethin and qeynos (molds sold in qey hills for banded if i remember right) Yes, thats right, even though dark elves and the other elves are really small/med so its better for them to wear small banded since its light weight their cities STILL only sell medium. Even though the barbarians are med/large their silly town sells only large armor molds so its heavier also.

"Banded Helm

AC: +8
Weight: 4.5
Classes: Ranger Shaman Cleric Paladin Shadowknight Bard Rogue Warrior
Races: All Races"

In that case Allakhazam's is wrong with:

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1463

because "A banded helm" is NOT all races, but only races who can wear medium armor so it excludes small only races and large only races.

And this link only shows that one "banded helm and not the "small banded helm" or "large banded helm."

Wow, I'm a lucky Sod. I swam into the cave- and at the end of the first tunnel the darned bear just walked right past me...he aggroed on me and my pet just ripped him a new one. I dotted it and stood back and watched the bear fall EASILY!

Spawn Times

I consider myself very lucky to have spawned the bear in less than a day (3 cycles). I entered the caves and killed the roaming skellies and marked the time. As a Ranger doing this quest for a guildmate, I would highly recommend bringing a ranger along. Seven hours later I checked and both PH skellies were up again. So the third time, I went earlier and watched the bear spawn at exactly 6 hours. [Edit: Please note that in each of many other camps I have completed with this bear, the spawn is 7 hours.] Then a second bear popped a few minutes after I killed the first one. So, I can confirm that two bears can pop on one cycle. I did a quick /who and found a Shaman of 19 seasons and escorted him to the cave and promptly proceeded to beat down the bear for him. For some reason, during the last spawn cycle the Lich was despawned - lucky me!

A few tips for Rangers helping their Shammy friends:
- Set /tracksort to distance
- Move forward into the caves to the first intersection, then track
- You will see 2 Skeletons close together (The ones by the broken teleporter)
- You will see 3 Skeletons close together (The ones in the hut with the wizard wand piece)
- The other 2 Skeletons are the placeholders (Or a bear if you're lucky)
- Keep the Lich on track so that you can stay away from him.
- Cast enduring breath, no matter how well you or your Shaman friend can swim

Helm fun
# Oct 31 2001 at 5:06 AM Rating: Default
Greetings and salutations!

The Glacier Bear is indeed located in the caves under the ice river. Use the hole located closest to Meg's Tower and swim north into the caves. If you swimming is 100 or above, you will make the swim easy- else have someone put enduring breath on you.

The problem with the bear spawn is two fold-
1) The spawn cycle is almost exactly 7 hours
2) There is a place holder for the bear (an icebone skeleton)

There are basically two (2) placeholder roaming spawns on a 7 hour clock. They are the only spawn that roam the caverns, all others are stationary. The place holders have 3 possible pops:
1) Icebone skeleton (common)
2) Lich and Pet (rare)
3) Glacier Bear (very rare)

The key is to go into the caverns (ranger assistance is helpful to avoid the Lich) and kill the place holders and mark the time. 7 real-world hours later, they next spawn cycle will occur and hope for a bear.

The shortest period I've ever seen this quest take is about 4 real-world days, religiously marking time of placeholder kills and checking back in with track. If the lich spawns, it is definately bad news as this guy is very nasty. He can drop a level 40 in a few seconds.

On the banded helm- armor can be confusing and it's very simple once you realize a few things:
1) The NAME of the armor denotes it's size. So "Small Banded Helm", "Banded Helm", and "Large Banded Helm" are the 3 sizes possible, with the no designation always meaning "Medium"
2) The SIZE parameter in the armor information page denotes the CONTAINER SIZE from which it will fit within. This is common of ALL items in EQ. They all have a "SIZE:" field and this refers to what kind of sack or bag is needed to carry it. Do not let this confuse you on armor size for race applicability.

It's quite possible to have, say, "Large Bracer" showing "SIZE:Small." This simply means it fits large races, but will also fit in a potion bag or other container that can only hold small items.

Last comment here- there is lore of an additional drop on the Glacier bear of interest to clerics. "An ICON of the Devout" or similar. I've seen dozens of bears fall but never heard of such a drop. I've ran into a cleric now camping the same bear looking for this drop to only be dissapointed by the bear only having the pelt and some bear meat. Has anyone ever seen the icon?

I'd really feel sorry for clerics if their drop is on such a rare spawn with long spawn cycle AND a rare drop. Be it as it may, it might be wise to send a shout out to clerics to give loot rights for the icon if you ever run into one... or try to pair up with a cleric to double-shift the 7 hour spawn. :)

Peace and grace be with you

Thanks for all the great information. I just wanted to correct a little oversight in the original post. The Lich IS NOT a placeholder of the bear. The Lich is part of a different spawn table and is a Quest NPC. The only Placeholders are the 2 wandering Icebone Skeletons.

RE: Medium helm molds?

I had a hard time with the medium helm concept also. I kept expecting to have an Item called 'a medium helm'. This is not so. The helm and having the dufrente ground was all I had left. I had one high lvl blacksmith help me, he took 2 sheets of metal, and one helm mold (Both purchased from Issilyn Ristan, found in East Freeport at the 'Armor by Ikthar' store [#1 on the eqatlas map]). He made 'a banded helm'. We both looked at it, and thought it was wrong. I went to other 'large' cites, only to find no luck. Then I ran into a lvl 60 shaman who was also a high lvl blacksmith. He looked at my helm, said it was a small helm. I gave him the 2 sheets and 'helm mold', he made the same helm, but said it was a medium helm.

Now, this really confused me, because I was trying to beleive what the other players were telling me. But after researching and finishing the quest, they were both wrong/right. They both made the same helm. There is no such thing as 'a medium banded helm'. You must have 'a banded helm' crafted for you. The helm must have the list of medium races on it. Here is a link to the helm:
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1463

Hope this clears any confusion about the helm.

btw, I gave my dufrente to Punta, and she ground it for me. Punta is one of the few shaman ogres in Lake Rathe. Also, my Glacier bear had a spawn time of 6:45 min. And I had to kill 5 Lizard pages before one dropped the chamios.
