Hail Vrynn

Vrynn says, ‘Greetings, spiritwalker. I am called Vrynn. My wife Kyralynn and I form shamanic armor from banded armor. I make armor from banded [boots], [gauntlets], [sleeves], and [leggings].’

You say, ‘boots’

Vrynn says, ‘The boots require banded boots, 1 dufrenite, an orc chief’s tongue from Lesser Faydark, and terror spines from a tentacle terror in Najena.’

  1. Banded Boots
  2. Dufrenite
  3. Terror Spines (from tentacle terror in Najena) and
  4. Orc Chief Tongue (from Orc chiefton in Lesser Faydark)

Dufrenite is occasionally, although rarely, dropped by carrion ghouls in Unrest and Clockworks in Solusek's eye and also can be purchased in the magic shops in various cities including Halas, W Karanas, Rivervale, Grobb and Ogguk for 150 to 200 pp each depending upon your faction and charisma. Banded armor is made with the blacksmithing skill.

This is my first totemic quest and here's how it worked for me soloing it (29 barb shammy):

Did the tongue first. I had to go through about a dozen orc chiefs (and several lego PHs) until I got it. Otherwise piece of cake.

Spines were tougher. The mobs in the area of Najeena where the Tentacle Terrors are found (by the way, there's actually 4 total TTs to camp, 2 in the large chamber in front of the "castle" after the PH skellys are removed and 2 in the room straight past the ogre sitting behind the fire -- also occasionally with skelly PHs) wasn't too difficult but the TTs are very hostile (plus they have the blow back and DD and DoT spells) and I sometimes had to manage 2 blues at once, plus the occasional ogre guard or skelly who joined in as well. Sometimes I had to give up and zone out, heal and med and try it again. Also, the drop rate on the spines was much longer for me than others have posted. I had to kill about a dozen TTs before one dropped spines. Still, at 29 this wasn't too terribly hard -- it just required a plan and patience.

After reading about the spawn/drop rates for the dufrenite I said "***** it" and went and bought it in Halas (at Yee Magik btw). With Alluring Aura they sold it to me for about 154 pp. That part annoys me since, even though I paid the lower end of the scale for the dufrenite, I find it hard to believe that by now I couldn't just pay that much for a pair of these boots in Bazaar.

Finally, I invested the time and money to get my smithing skill up to making banded boots -- for me it was around 65 so it's not that hard.

Anyway, as quests go this one's decent overall and I'm looking forward to *finally* getting rid of my cloth sandals. ;-)

Happy Trails!

Ok, maybe someone in here can help. Attempted to do the Totemic Boots quest. Got all the items. Turned them in to Vrynn in Lake Rathe. He said where's the rest 4 times. Took my items and got no boots. Want to know what I did wrong. He cons indifferent to me. Please respond.

Did you get him the right type of processed duffrenite ? I got powdered instead of crushed or vice versa the first time I did it. Wow, that was an annoying way to waste 160 pp

Did you make sure to sure normal banded boots? Large banded and small banded boots will not work. I have done this quest many times, and if you had the nodrop spines and the nodrop tongue, that's the only thing I can think of unless you handed him a peridot by accident. I hope this helps you out.

Be safe and have fun:)

Medium?
# Mar 15 2002 at 2:39 AM Rating: Default
What does a master smith gotta do? Anyhow, this quest calls for a medium banded boots. This item does not exist so please don't give any smiths a hard time when they tell you so. The item is called, simply, "Banded Boots." By medium all is meant is what races can equip it; the medium races. This has nothing to do with the SIZE: attribute either. Some of the banded pieces you will use in totemic armor are SIZE: SMALL. It doesn't matter. As long as the item is called only "Banded Boots," you are fine. A shaman took a big risk to prove this and it turns out I am right. So, if you can, when a smith tells you he can make medium banded boots and they don't say that, don't give him a hard time. Thank you.

Seronius, Master Smith, Solusek Ro.

I can second the fact that the boots must say "Banded Boots". Do not try and use "Large Banded Boots". This does not work (firsthand experience). I think the reason they call them medium banded boots is due to the fact that they are neither large nor small. Which would make them medium.

Well said brother Seronius. My cleric is also a master smith-rapidly working towards Grandmaster to make some cultural elven armor(currently 176). If anyone on Sol Ro needs banded armor made for these quests or even alts, I'm more than willing to help you out depending on how far I have to travel, what I'm camping at the time, etc.

The most uncommon component seems to be the banded boots

Got the Tongue off the first Chief, spines off the sixth Terror, then sat on my butt for two hours auctioning for banded boots and getting nothing. I guess I'll be camping the Banded Boots again tonight.

OK, finally I have started to get somewhere with this quest. Found and slaughted 4 orc chief's with the last one dropping the tongue. No problem there except for this maniac horse that would pop out of nowhere and with two smake downs i would be dead. I took a hit for 405 HP once - DOH - run u say, well even with Spirit of Cheetah i did not get to far when WHAM, here comes little brownie girl - BAH. Now i moved on to The Cauldron where i spent a total of approx. 7 hours camping them GOBS - what a pain. What i finally had to start doing is just pull every goblin from the camp that was not a Tidal lord to the Healers and such up north. THese guys call themselves the "FABULOUS FOUR" Anyway, if there was a tidal gob at the camp, i would just root it and run. All the aggros in the camp would follow except for the TIdal gob and then after the FAB four took care of the rest for me I would go back and Root/Envenomed breath the Tidal gob down. I gave away quite a few waterrings from them but finally have awhile i got a Cauldron shell, YEAH!! I got so excited and it was so late at night that I logged - doh - All me stuff from the night including the shell were in spirit pouches. Needless to say when i logged on the next day - no more shell or the Stalagterror spine spear that had been given to me by a kind soul in Lavastorm. WEll, back the Gobs I went. In a total of 7 hours, i managed to loot 3 shells approx 10 waterrings and a total of 25 Tidal gobs dead. Now i am trying to solve the Duferite problem. I was going to sell the Stalagterror spine spear for the money and just buy the duferite but i brain farted and lost it. So I went to Solesks eye to try and find some. Yeah right, good luck. I better off hunting mammoths in Everfrost until i freeZe and just buy it. When I was in Solesk eye and i asked people obout this duferite no one had ever seen it dropped before. Now these were 50 + dudes that were in there and they were slaughtering everything in that place and nada. OK, back to the Cauldron then and on to Unrest where there it is rumored that carrion ghouls dropped this stuff. Well that may be try but the problem is finding a carrion ghould. Once again no one had ever seen one, let alone the duferite. ANyway, i guess my point is - I GIVE UP! Im just gonna have to buy the darn things. Anyone that wishes to give me a donation just send me a tells and i will be on my way to collect it. :)
OK, so what does the shell cauldron have to do with this quest? NOTHING, but u need it for one of the othere pieces of armour, dont remember which right now but another one of the things that disappeared in my spirit pouches was the Terror spines. This has got to be the easies NO DROP quest item i have ever got. Killed two Tenacle terrors and recieved to Terror spines. WHOOPIE, how depressing, still cant get the armour. :) DONATIONS ACCEPTED
boot sizes
# Sep 04 2001 at 12:05 PM Rating: Decent
Being a smith, i hope this clarifys the whole medium banded armor question. There are 3 sizes of banded armor. S/M/L These sizes refer only to the size of the critter that can wear them. Large is ogre/troll/barbarian only and weighs more than the rest. Medium is Barbarian and all the medium sized adventurers. Small is dwarf, gnome, etc. When the armor is forged, the stat gives a size of small/med/large. This stat refers to the size of the container that the armor can be stored in, not the "Medium" that is required for the quest. "Medium" armor molds are found in Freeport, so ask a blacksmith in freeport to make you medium armor. The size will say "small", but this is the medium sized armor for the quest. Hope this clears up any confusion about medium sized armor.

on the banded boots they need to be medium right? Do you mean medium banded boots or large banded boots size medium?
Banded Size Clarification
# Mar 13 2002 at 3:47 PM Rating: Default
Hopefully this will further clear up the banded armor size question:
The term "medium" banded armor can be confusing for non-blacksmiths who have never bought the components for smithing....For each piece of armor, for example, banded tunic (mail), you can buy one of three different sizes of armor molds to make the armor. For instance, these are "Large Tunic Mold," "Tunic Mold," and "Small Tunic Mold." The one that makes the medium armor is the "Tunic Mold" (this applies to each different armor piece as well). The confusion comes when you inspect the stats and see that the gloves are small and the cloak is large, ect.

AS LONG AS THE NAME OF THE ARMOR ITSELF DOES NOT INCLUDE THE WORD LARGE OR SMALL, YOU HAVE MEDIUM BANDED ARMOR!

IF YOU HAVE, AS EXAMPLE, "LARGE BANDED BOOTS" OR "SMALL BANDED BOOTS" YOU WILL FAIL WITH THIS QUEST! YOU WANT "BANDED BOOTS"!!!

From Blacksmithing experience, I know that medium banded armor molds can be found in Freeport and Kelethin...so both places would be good to start your banded armor search. Or just ask me and I will make you a full suit!

Good Luck with the Quest!

Orc Chief's Tongue
# Aug 23 2001 at 2:38 PM Rating: Default
Got the orc tongue after about 1/2 hour camp last night. Killed orc chief, orc legionnaire, then two more chiefs (last one had tongue.)

Each one spawned about 5-6 mins after the last one was killed, just enough time to heal, med and get ready to go again.

Chiefs were low blue to my 24th lvl Ranger (used him to kill to camp orcs so my 21st lvl Troll Shaman wouldn't lose faction with Indigo Brotherhood.) The one legionnaire I fought conned dangerous blue, but was pretty easy to solo (only brought me down about 2 bubs of health.)

don't summon pet

44 sham here- i know i should have done this earlier but hey need that extra ac now- thur armor quests gonna be while. Anyway- camped chief for couple hrs- killed him like 5 or 6 times with pet up-no tongue. Logged in later- didn't summon pet- first chief drops tongue. Seen this happen before with paw container for opalla quest- guy didn't spawn until no pet was up. Coincidence- maybe, but don't think so. See if this helps.

my exp so far

TOUNGE: killed 2 legionares, chief, two legionares, chief, three legionares, two chiefs....got the tounge on the last kill.

TERROR SPINE: nine terrors in Najena so far and got two whips but no spine. I will try again tonight. The terrors spawn is about 18 minutes. There are two spawn points but one occasionally has a skel as a PH.

I solo the orcs and the terrors np as a 27 shaman, and still get exp from all the legionares, chiefs, and terrors so the camp is not a total waste....plus I may actually get the boots some time.
Easy enough
# Apr 16 2001 at 11:21 PM Rating: Default
I was lucky enough to get this done at level 15, was fighting with a monk in Najena who said to take the thorns. The tongue I got by sticking around a bard who was fighting the orcs and was nice enough to let me loot. Best part was I got it off the first chief she killed when I was there.

These are now dropping in the Rathe Mountains off a named Cyclops (Occulys Ogrefiend). He's ca. level 45, hits like a brick, and has, oh, 20 billion hits, but, just last night (2/16) picked up a pair of these from him...In my experience, he spawns pretty much wherever a 'clopse can, which is to say, darn near anywhere on clopse hill.

Can these also be found off the tentacle terrors in Unrest, or do I have to go to Najena to get them?
RE: Terror Spines
# Aug 10 2001 at 1:17 PM Rating: Default
You CAN get these in Unrest. I killed about 4 terrors near the Geranel spawn in Unrest and got one spine. Might be easier/more common in Najena though.
RE: Terror Spines
# Dec 17 2000 at 7:36 AM Rating: Default
I don't think so. Hunting tentacle terrors in Najena, they dropped about 1 in 4. In Unrest, my group must have killed a dozen and not one dropped.

My group camped him the past two days on and off and killed him about 50 times. The shaman finally got a tongue!!! Then, while meding for the trip out, another chief attacked us. Low and behold, this one had ANOTHER TONGUE!!! Two in a row... Too bad we only had one shaman with us. Now I (23 ranger) have a tongue I do not need that is no drop....
Orc Tongue is easy!!!
# Oct 15 2000 at 2:23 PM Rating: Default
I camped the orc chief at lvl 20 with my lvl 40 wizard friend and we killed him 3 times and he droped it on the 3rd kill. Luck...maybe but i thought it was easy!
RE: Orc Tongue is easy!!!
# Oct 30 2000 at 3:58 AM Rating: Default
I seem to be able to get a lot of tongues. As a lvl 27 ranger the chief and legionnaires are quite good exp. Anyway, while waiting for the chief, I usually lay waste to the entire camp.
Maybe this helps. Maybe the death of the whole camp or the oracle has sumthin to do with it.

Then again, it maybe totally random )
