If you are not an INT caster, you will need the help of one with high Research skill to finish this quest.

Protector of the Ruins is located behind a locked door at +47.00, +346.00, -385.72.

You say, 'Hail, Protector of the Ruins'

Protector of the Ruins says 'Greetings traveler, it has been ages since I have seen another living person. I have spent many years down here trying to perfect an ancient spell discovered long ago. While the history of this place is still told throughout Norrath, only those who live here know what really went on when the heretics moved down here. . . [Continue]?'

Keep saying 'continue' multiple times. Eventually, Protector of the Ruins gives you a Tome of Basic Research.

You say, 'What portals?'

Protector of the Ruins says 'If I remember correctly, the portal to my right will lead to New Paineel, the current home of the heretics. The one to my left it will lead to the prison in Erudin. The third one behind me leads to the home of the dark elves.'

All of the pages are NO DROP, so make sure the INT caster collects them. Most of the pages are either random drops from named mobs or are ground spawn in the Ruins of Old Paineel. Obtaining page 38, however, requires going on a journey. Your journey begins by speaking to Pellillo Cogswin, a gnome who, with his brothers, got a bit over his head (as if that were difficult) in the Ruins of Old Paineel.

Page 20 -14.58, -107.32, -273.764
Page 36 110, 1000
Page 52 750, 600
Ancient_Book_Cover 445, -355, -11

A tracker is needed to find the "mini" named "old" / "ancient" gargoyles and constructs (pages 20-23 and 35-38). They can spawn from any broken/ruined garg or construct.

The researcher is easier as it is in one building/area (Pages 50-53) -- it spawns only from temple "ghosts" - one is always one up after each clearing.

The drops for each mini are random (about 1 in 3 drop a page) - you can get no pages or a duplicate page a lot!

You say, 'Hail, Pellillo Cogswin'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'What how did you see me? Never mind I guess it doesn't matter at this point. Our [goal] has become unattainable.'

You say, 'What goal?'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'When my younger brother heard that something had happened here in these ruins he went looking for fortune and glory with a [party] made up of old friends.'

You say, 'What party?'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'As far as I know they are all treasure seekers and explorers like him, but his fate has become less of a priority to me as my attention has been placed on my other [brothers] that accompanied me here.'

You say, 'What brothers?'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'Well to make a long story short, my other brothers and I tracked the party here, but when we found that disenchanted earth elemental we all stopped to investigate. What we found was quite extraordinary. A piece of [paper] that looked like it had been ripped from a journal was clenched in the hand of this elemental.'

You say, 'What paper?'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'The paper detailed an ancient magic spell that we believe is responsible for the constructs that recently inhabited these ruins. Now gnomes being gnomes we all begin to wonder if we could decipher the ancient text the spell was written in and use the spell for the greater good of our kind. But then I begin to have a [doubt].'

You say, 'What doubt?'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'Well after thinking about it a little I realized that there must be a reason why this magic had not been found. Many have passed through these ruins and this had never been discovered by anyone. It must have been hidden for a reason and as such I told my brothers that we should leave it here as it could bring more bad then good. That's when something [happened] I was not prepared for.'

You say, 'What happened?'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'One of them, Stiggles, turned to me and told me to shut my trap. The other, Tani turned to him and demanded that he give him the paper. They begin to argue back and forth and then a small scuffle broke out between the two. I tried to break it up, but before I could I heard the paper rip in two. Standing across from each other with a torn piece of paper in their hands they looked at me and gated home leaving me here in danger and very [worried].'

You say, 'Worried?'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'This power cannot be given to my kin. It is dangerous and I must figure out how to get those pieces back. . . Hey you seem pretty interested in this to have listened so long. You think you could do me a [favor]?'

You say, 'What favor?'

Pellillo Cogswin says 'Find my brothers and when you do give them each a note I have written for them. Hopefully it will help them understand why the information contained on that piece of paper must be kept here. Finding them will not be easy but I can tell you that Stiggles use to spend a lot of his time alone in a dragon graveyard inhabited by phase spiders. Tani may be near the home of the Sarnaks, he was looking into some intriguing discovery around there before he decided to accompany me here. They should give you the piece they have and then I will need you to bring them back here to me so I can fix this mess.'

You receive a Note to Tani and a Note to Stiggle. Tani Cogswin may be found in Chardok at +40, +40 in the safe room next to the Bridgekeeper area.

You say, 'Hail, Tani Cogswin'

Tani Cogswin says 'Please leave me be if they catch me talking to you I will be punished again.'

Give him the note.

Tani Cogswin says 'Oh thank Brell I thought I would never be found. My brother Pellillo is right we were wrong to take the paper and I realized that shortly after, but when I started the journey back I was captured by a band of Sarnaks and brought here. When they found the paper, the Queen demanded that it be researched and so she gave it to [Historian Selrin].'

You say, 'Who is Historian Selrin?'

Tani Cogswin says 'Historian Selrin is the lorekeeper of Chardok. He spends most of his time in the library but I hear he and the Prince often talk for hours on end. Please you must get that paper back from him and return it to my brother. Don't worry about me, your timely intrusion has provided an opportunity for my escape.'

Historian Selrin Di`Zok is a red-to-65 wizard with high resists that can hit in the 800s. He has no faction hits. Kill him and loot an Outcast's Torn Right Page.

Now go to Dragon Necropolis. Find "an Odd Looking Spider" and hand it Stiggle's note. This causes a clockwork spider named Stiggles Cogswin to spawn. He'll summon and hit for 600 or so. At 50% health he respawns in gnome form and continues attacking. At 20% health ten or so of "a tiny clockwork spawn," each mezzable and hitting for 200-250 or so. Stiggle can drop Stiggle's Crimson Shawl and a Clockwork Facemask. One of the tiny clockworks will drop an Outcast's Torn Left Page.

Give both halves of the note to Pellillo Cogswin to receive Restored Page 38.

Now you need to assemble the three chapters of the book in the Tome of Basic Research by combining pages 20-23, 35-38, and 50-53 to craft Assembled Chapter 19, Assembled Chapter 20, and Assembled Chapter 21, respectively. These combinations require a near-200 skill in Research.

Next, locate the Ancient Book Cover as a ground spawn at +445, -355, -110, on the balcony overlooking the bridge across the pit.

Finally, combine the three chapters and the cover in the Ancient Tome of Research, which drops from the Guardian of the Seal, a rather tough level 70 mob that generally requires 2-3 high-level groups to kill. This again requires a high skill in Research, and crafts Tome of the Outcast, usable by INT casters. You may hand the Tome of the Outcast in to the Protector of the Ruins for a Disenchanted Piece of Yael, a droppable item that you may then pass to a non-INT caster class.

Protector of the Ruins says 'Amazing I can't believe you found the remaining pages. I was beginning to believe that I would never again see these pages. Now I can complete my research and finish the spell I placed upon these portals please take this; it is some of the substance I used to create the constructs. If you take it to Nortlav he might be able to craft something from it.'

Give it to Yael:

A voice echoes in your mind; 'I give you this in memory of my people, use it well. If you to wish craft something else return to me that which I have given.'

If you are one of the classes that has more than one reward possible, turn the one you got back in to the Protector of the Ruins for a different reward.

I completed this quest on Agnarr several months back. I camped in Chardok for days waiting for the Historian who never showed. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere in the quest details or comments(unless I missed it).... It turns out the Historian is a spawned, loot locked mob that appears after you turn in the note to Tani. I tested this theory multiple times, and the Historian was never up, but after turning in the note and running to Prince room, it was up every time.

The Tome of Basic research is given to you after you complete going through the text offered by The Protector of the Ruins.

Upon each combine within the Tome of Basic Research you retain the container; it is not consumed.

You say, 'Hail, Protector of the Ruins'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'Greetings, traveler. It has been ages since I have seen another living person. I have spent many years down here trying to perfect an ancient spell discovered long ago. While the history of this place is still told throughout Norrath, only those who live here know what really went on when the heretics moved down here... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'Nortlav studied the tome I had been using and asked if I had used a chunk of living rock in the recipe. I told him that it was impossible for me to retrieve living stone on my own. For this spell, I used granite chunks I found at the tower. Nortlav's eyes glowed brightly as he rushed pass me saying he would return shortly... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'From deep in the caverns, I heard the cry of the horrible elemental guardian, Master Yael. He shouted Nortlav's name and I was sure I would never lay eyes on him again! But Nortlav burst through the door to my chambers with a fierce grin. Bloody and bruised, he reached out and opened his hand. Resting on his palm was a chunk of earth that he retrieved from Yael. He said that with that rock, the spell for the constructs should work. He told me that if I used the armor of my fallen comrades in the spell recipe, that I should be able to construct golems of steel, which would be much stronger then ones of stone. Then, Nortlav turned and disappeared into the hallways of the temple. I expected him to return to assist me with working the spell on my sculptures, but he never did... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'I called to the golems I had created earlier and commanded them to collect all the pieces of armor they could find on the floor of the Tower. While I waited for the steel ingredients, I smeared some of the earth taken from Yael's body on the gargoyles I had made and begin the ritual again. It worked far better than I could have imagined. Moving as if made of living tissue, the gargoyles sprung to life and crouched before me. I commanded them to begin sculpting more forms for me to give life to... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'The golems brought back piles of armor, which I coated with the mud from Yael's body and brought them to life. It wasn't long before I had created a significant army of summoned creatures that would help us reclaim our city from Brell's servants... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'When I felt it was the right time, I sent the constructs forth with one command -- destroy all elementals that inhabit the city. They marched forward and executed the command flawlessly. Realizing that in their weakened condition they stood no chance against my creations, the elementals begin to flee to a hidden part of the city. I called for my summoned creatures to stop their assault and told the spirits of my fellow heretics to once again take back that which was theirs. With relieved and grateful whispers, they floated back into the city and took the places they held when they were alive... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'There was a lingering issue, though. Ever since Nortlav gave me the earth he found on Master Yael, I had not seen him. It had been years since I'd set my eyes upon him. Escorted by some golems I began to search. Feeling confident and safe, we entered the chamber of Yael. He still stood! While he looked much weaker than the day he came through from the Underfoot, he was still an intimidating sight... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'I carefully looked around the chamber and saw a ghostly figure. With my brawny servants keeping an eye on Master Yael, I approached the ghostly figure hoping against all hope it wasn't that brave dragon slayer I had once known. But it was Nortlav. After the battle with Yael, he returned and was killed by Yael. "Nortlav what happened?" I asked. The incoherent moan was all I needed to ignite the flame of revenge inside of me. The thought of this great warrior being reduced to some mindless spirit trapped in Yael's domain caused a fire of hate to burn in my heart... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'In my fit of rage, I began the ritual again, with a few alterations. With some new words and reagents, I aimed to create the mightiest golem that had ever crushed the ground of Norrath. It's only purpose would be to destroy the failing Master Yael. I wanted the ultimate payment, the highest price possible for killing my people and extinguishing the flaming spirit of Nortlav... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'I remember the sweat forming on my brow as I twisted the spell to do my bidding. A whirling tornado of magic appeared before me and it was filled with as much rage as I had buried in me for countless ages. The room filled with a vicious storm of magic. I collapsed when the spell was completed. And when the room cleared, there it was -- my perfect construct... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'Towering over me, his pearly black skin gleamed. I shouted for him to destroy Master Yael and to make sure nothing else ever enters or leaves through the Wall of Living Stone... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'Master Yael shouted in vain as my construct ripped him to pieces. The battle lasted mere moments before its earthen corpse crumpled to the ground. Having completed its first task, the new construct stood in front of the Wall of Living Stone and called two other constructs to its side. The construct still stands there, forever watching for those creatures that would come through the wall from the Underfoot and violate my home... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'All of my efforts to reclaim Old Paineel for the heretics, and my vengeance, have taken a toll on me. With nothing to distract me, my desire to return to the world of the living slowly returned. While searching for a safe path to the surface, I discovered a secret wall I had never seen before... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'
Protector of the Ruins says, 'I stepped through and came upon a door that could not be opened by my fragile hand. I called to a construct and had it force the door open for me. What I discovered is what lies before you, three portals which take you above ground. The very same heretic who fashioned the spell for my constructs, also had the skill and talent to create the portals. I wonder if they were put there during the war as a failsafe escape. The fact that they weren't used concerned me. I thought they might be unsafe... [Continue]?'
You say, 'Continue'

(Tome of Basic Research appears on your cursor)

Protector of the Ruins says, 'I've gone through the notes that were left inside the ancient tome he wrote. After going through his notes I think I discovered the problem and have tried to fix it. I am still trying to figure out how these [portals] can be used to return here, but the tome was ripped to shreds one day during one of my experiments. Now the pages lie all over the place. While I have collected many of the pages I have yet to find the remaining twelve and the book cover. If I ever retrieve them I can rebind the book with the aid of the Tome of Research that is held by my perfect construct. In your travels if you happen to come across any of the pages I ask that you combine each chapter in this Lexicon. Then they can be combined with the book cover to complete that part of the ancient tome. When I have, I will be able to go to the surface and then return.'

I thought I would try to get this quest done for the 1HB with stun for my level 30 Pal. I used my 105 necro (mass kill) and 95 Ranger (tracking) and 95 mage for CoTH at the end to get my level 30 paladin to the Echo of Nortlav for final turn in.

Note: Stiggle fight: be very careful not to kill too fast - you need to wait for Stiggle to spawn the tiny guys that drop the page (these spawn around 25% health or something). I had to run back to the hole get a new Stiggle note and redo that part.

Ground Spawns in The Hole:
Page 20 -14.58, -107.32, -273.764
Page 36 110, 1000
Page 52 750, 600
Ancient_Book_Cover 445, -355, -11

The hard part is getting all the pages in The Hole.

3 days later I finished it. I gave the Disenchanted Piece of Yael (drop-able) to my 30 Pal and he turned it in to Echo of Nortlav to get his nice 1HB ( keep handing the item you get back to Echo of Nortlav until you get the item you want). Looks like the stun process works at maybe even level 1 (works at level 30 for sure).

The rest of quest is as listed.

It took about 20-25 hours from start to finish.

Earlier today I saw a zonewide emote, about an earthquake in Odus: You feel the whole of Norrath tremble. You are fairly certain the epicenter of the shaking is somewhere on Odus.

Checked various zones, and then the hole. Hole didn'nt need a key/lockick to open, the rock just moved when clicked.

Once out of the water the Protector of the Ruins stands there. Hailed and he gives the following reply:

You say, 'Hail, Protector of the Ruins '
Protector of the Ruins says 'Oh No. It is horrible. My creation, the Guardian of the Seal has failed. Something has caused a horrible [earthquake] that has broken through the seal from the Underfoot. I came up here to see if I could think of anything different to do to make it stronger. It is much too dangerous to assist the Guardian. I would not ask that of myself, so I will not ask it of anyone. If you can, keep an eye on things. I expect The Guardian can hold his own, but one can never be too careful.'

You say, 'What earthquake?'
Protector of the Ruins says 'I do not know conclusively where it originates since it has been reported over all of Norrath, and even a few of the planes. But the extent of the earthquake causes me to believe it is from the Underfoot itself. '

At this point he doesnt reply further to any of these questions:
You say, 'what is Underfoot?'
You say, 'I can keep an eye on things'
You say, 'I will keep an eye on things'
You say, 'Want me to keep an eye on things?'
You say, 'Who is the Guardian?'

The Protector cons white to lvl 76

If you go to the other end of the zone, where the Guardian of the Seal spawns, you'll see about 15 "a cliknar invader"s fighting the Guardian and two "an Animated Construct"s. No health bars actually drop though, so it's just there for lore I suspect. Targetable, and you can attack them (they hit for about 4k and there's 15 of 'em, bring a good group and a mezzer).

These were the happenings before the release of the "Underfoot" expansion.

Today the Guardian of the Seal's spawn point is still at the (now open) door, which leads now to Brell's Rest.

The room to the Guardian and the door seems now locked; I'm looking for the now-needed key.

Response from Protector of the Ruins when handing in the completed Tome of the Outcast:

Protector of the Ruins says 'Amazing I can't believe you found the remaining pages. I was beginning to believe that I would never again see these pages. Now I can complete my research and finish the spell I placed upon these portals please take this; it is some of the substance I used to create the constructs. If you take it to Nortlav he might be able to craft something from it.'

You receive the Disenchanted Piece of Yael with instructions to hand this to Nortlav for the different items to fit your class.

Nortlav's response after handing in Disenchanted Piece of Yael:

A voice echoes in your mind; 'I give you this in memory of my people, use it well. If you to wish craft something else return to me that which I have given."

Some clarifications
# Feb 05 2007 at 3:09 PM Rating: Decent
The hole is roughly divided into 4 clumps of mobs. The easy mobs at the top are mostly elementals, and have no drop for this quest. Then come the first batch of mobs with constructs, ghosts and gargoyles with nameds "an old construct" and "an old gargoyle" (page 20s). Second batch has nameds "an ancient construct", "an ancient gargoyle" and "a ratman inhabitant" (page 30s). Third batch is ghosts in the temple, and has named "a temple researcher" (page 50s).

Each of these nameds will drop a piece of loot, a sacred key, and possibly a page. The page will be random in the appropriate range, minus the pages that come from ground spawns and cogswin.

Note on the ratman inhabitant: There are one or two roaming ratman inhabitants which sometimes spawn as a "named" loot dropping version, but have the same exact name and other characteristics. Most of the time when you see a ratman inhabitant, it won't be a page dropping mob.

After hours of massive slaughter, here's my working theory about the nameds:
Any mob of the right level and type (construct, gargoyle, ghost) will PH the corresponding named, but the named can only be up ONCE at any given time. The spawn rate for the nameds is actually pretty high--after getting one, you'll probably get another within the next 20 or 30 ph spawns. The problem is the Hole has tons of weird nooks and crannies off the beaten path (in basements and up stairwells). If the named is hiding up some random building, you will not be able to get another to spawn until you hunt it down and kill it.

I was able to construct the assembled chapters at research skill of 165. It was already trivial, and I didn't fail on any of the three. The final combine of the assembled chapters and book cover, however, cannot be attempted without a certain research skill. At 170 skill, it still tells me I wouldn't even dream of attempting the combine. I'm assuming from the original guide I'll need to get research skill 200 to finish up.

Really not sure what is going on with this. But figured I'd give this a shot solo.

Turned in the note to Stiggle in Dragon Nec to the "an Odd Looking Spider". It attacked and otherwise behaved as described. When the mini-spawns started I burned Stiggle to the ground and looted quick, knowing my pet couldn't take the 10 or so spawns for long.

No torn note on Stiggle, only a

Looks like your common cloth shoulder item.

The above outline implies that the torn half is dropped by him, don't believe it. It's on one of the "a tiny clockwork"s that he spawns, maybe each drops one, will have to try again :/

Took a cleric with me (yes, needed this even at 73, those adds are a drag for a non-raid equipped mage) and finished this today. The page does only drop off one of the adds, and it would appear to be random which one has it. This time Stiggle dropped nothing. Yay for completing an old quest, now I can get rid of the combine containers!

Do the Berserkers get the shaft again? I checked all the links above and I didn't see BER anywhere? Can anyone confirm that the cleaver is Berserker useable or not?

The cleaver is BER-useable and I've updated it to reflect that.

What will happen if combination fail?
# Jul 11 2004 at 1:02 AM Rating: Decent
Do i lose the pages . If any of the combination fails?
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 09 2004 at 9:25 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) im sorry but if you ask me this quest is flat out retarded. it is such BS that it is all based on research. because if you are not an int caster and dont know an int caster with high enough skill that would like to spend hours upon hours of THEIR time to get YOU an item you are screwed. thanks again soe for dangaling yet another item in front of my face that i know ill never be able to obtain.

I completed this quest after spending quite a long time in the hole. I was looking to get the Living Stone Shield for my Druid. My necro did the final combination, and handed in the Tome of the Outcast to the Protector of the Ruins to receive a disenchanted piece of Yael.

I then handed this to my druid, dropped down the hole to hand it into Echo of Nortlav and received Living Stone Gloves. *sigh*

Beastlord only and curiously with a description of a 2000sec stun, about 33mins worth... nice stun.

Since this was now no drop, I was SOL. My druid had a beast only weapon. Naturally I petitioned, emailed, sent my youngest child in as a sacrifice to be told to bugreport the quest and so long thanks for playing.

Looks like I received the leather reward, not the priest reward.

So be warned, this may fail likewise for you other masocist questers.

You SHOULD be able to turn that reward back into Norty for a different reward despite the no drop tag.

From the Quest write up: "turn the one you got back in to the Protector of the Ruins for a different reward"

Did you try that at least?

I tried handing in the gloves to both Nortlav and Protector of the Ruins... sigh.

Can anyone tell me that has done this quest. if the Ancient Tome of Research diapears on combin or falur or do you keep it like the other book you get?
Ancient Tome
# Apr 17 2004 at 2:50 AM Rating: Decent
I'm sure I've read it somewhere but I can't find it <--- More than likely blind, when I do the final combine in the Ancient Tome of Research, do I get the Ancient Tome of Research back? or do I need to get another by killing Guardian of the Seal for friends, familys and pets?
Int Casters

Can an Int Caster turn in the Disenchanted Piece of Yael and recieve the Tome? Or can you only obtain weapons by turning in the Piece of Yael?
On completetion...
# Mar 08 2004 at 11:41 AM Rating: Decent
After you have gathered all the enchanted pages and have crafted the Tome of the Outkast you then have to have the int caster turn in the tome to the protector of the ruin's, then give the enchanted piece of yael to the class you want to have the weapon. Then you must got to Echo Nortlav who spawn's in GoS's lair and had him the enchanted yael who will then in turn give you your reward keep turning it in for your reward you want.

If this doesn't make sense sorry hehe i was first on Saryrn server to complete and as far as I know still the only one on Saryrn to have finished it..
If you read your final message when you turn the tome into Protector it'll tell you to go to echo for your weapon :)
Is the final turni-in correct?
# Feb 17 2004 at 3:43 AM Rating: Decent
I noticed it said to turn the droppable piece into Yael up there. Is this correct? I thought Yael was kos as most mobs in this zone.

# Feb 20 2004 at 5:06 PM Rating: Decent
Yael still exists? I thought he was out before this quest was in.. Perhaps they mean you turn it back into Protector of the Ruins?

Also, if said Int caster turns in his Tome for the peice of Yael in attempts to create a 2nd tome so that he can get some weapons for his guildies.. but fails the attempt. Can he turn back in the peice of Yael to get his Tome back? It would seem like you should be able to.. has anybody done it?

Ok I can see what the rewards are which is nice, but has anyone put together a compiled list of the pages and what they are? I feel like I am missing something. Also if someone posts the list of items for the quest do we know areas where the drops are located? I could not find any details on Safehouse, so I thought I would post to see what others might know.

For the long and the short of this quest visit safehouse. A write up on it is there, if you want to know the rewards, I will post links from my guild website below. It was an interesting quest, and only INT casters can do it. If you are doing it for someone else, turn in your uber sweet book for the remains and hand the remains to whomever you want to get the item. With all the trouble that this quest entails, you better REALLY love someone to do it for them. It is long. Links to the rewards posted below.

Turn that in for

Since that is not no drop, you can give that to whomever you want, but it can NOT be turned in for INT caster loot. So you can quest this for anyone except an INT caster. The other loots are posted below.

Have fun, and if you have questions look on safehouse until it is posted here.

If you are going to bother doing this quest everything needs to be looted by an INT caster because you need research skill to finish it.
#REDACTED, Posted: Nov 23 2003 at 11:07 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Crazy... All that work, and rewards available for most classes, but only if a researcher starts them since pages are LORE NO DROp. Not gonna happen often, I imagine. Someone at SoE had a ***** loose

The temple researcher dropped outcast journal page 53 ... 2 of the times we killed it (as well as a key every time and that ring every time). We killed it 5 times.

No they are all dropped in the hole, one of the pages was dropped from one of the guargoyles next to the guardian of the seal, when you kill the guardian of the seal he drops the cover.

Perhaps this means the pages are scattered across Norrath in the vicinity of where the portals lead to?
