Captain Ashlan is located at -570, 160. (This hand-in can be done with high dubious faction.)

    You say, 'Hail, Captain Ashlan'

Captain Ashlan says 'Greetings, traveler! I am Captain Ashlan of the Highpass Guards. I keep watch over my men and the volunteers here at the East Gate. It's been a busy [job] here lately, with the [orc raids] and all.'

    You say, 'What job?'

Captain Ashlan says 'We're short-handed around here, as usual. Would you like to help us out with the [Volunteer Watch]?'

    You say, `What Volunteer Watch?'

Captain Ashlan says 'The Volunteer Watch guards the entry gates of Highpass. Since the [orc raids] are becoming more and more frequent, it's a busy job. But it can pay well, depending on how many [orcs] you slay.'

    You say, 'What orcs?'

Captain Ashlan says 'One of the orc clans of Kithicor Woods has been trying to expand their territory. Small orc raiding parties are frequently rushing the East Gate. Without the [Volunteer Watch] helping us out, Highpass would probably be overrun by those vile beasts.'

Turn in an Orc Scalp (you may turn in up to four at once).

Captain Ashlan says 'Great work! Maybe you can help us out again sometime?'

On Phinigel players keep offering 3gp for these scalps in GFay and CB. So decided to save mine up and make the long run to Highhold Keep just to see what the "excitement" is all about. Turned in 60 scalps and got 1% XP TOTAL at level 12. I did receive over 5gp per scalp so there is a decent profit in buying these at 3gp on a new server. My faction went from apprehensive to amiable so if that's worth anything, the improvement was significant.

The XP is, of course, nothing like CB belts and pads, which give about 2% and 5% XP each, respectively, at level 10-13.

The experience was nerfed on those low level quest turn ins on Phinigel a couple months after the server was launched.

Bludgeoned to useless is probably an accurate description of what they did to quest XP...

This quest gives no noticeable XP gains at level 3. I just turned in 54 scalps (and that was quite the run without sow for my rogue).

This quest giving poor XP at level 12 is kind of meh, but arguable I suppose... before level 8 it should be good xp.

Illusion drops when you zone, of course, so you'd have to cast the illusion in zone. Illusion up, then invis up, to get TO the quest-NPC and then carefully drop invis to test /con him. If he isn't KOS then you can do the turn-ins. There's no faction requirement to GET the quest since just like the CB belts/pads you don't need to obtain the quest prior to "doing" it.

My toon was a Halfling druid so he was only apprehensive to start, not KOS.

I think they seriously nerfed the xp on this one. At level 13 my XP bar did not move up at all after turning in a stack of scalps to Capt. Ashlan. The faction hits and the gold are still good, though.

    Hello all,

Went to see the Captain yet again today with a few more stacks of orc scalps from Crushbone.
I usually hand in (4) unstacked orc scalps at a time to him and get the factions hits, experience, and money (5g 2s 5c).

I had a single Orc Scalp, so gave it to him and noticed that I got the same amount of money as I did for handing in (4) Orc Scalps (5g 2s 5c).
To confirm this, I gave him (1) Orc Scalp at a time for my last stack, and it was a much nicer profit of 20 x 5g2s5c =(100g 40s 100c) vs 5 x 5g2s5c =(25g 10s 25c) per stack of Orc Scalps.
Regarding the XP and faction hits, I assume it's the same and get the same as by handing only (1) Orc Scalp or (4) Orc Scalp at a time.

Note for Bards: Use your 'Cindas Charsimatic Carillon Song' on him and any other NPC that regards you lest then 'amiably'. He regards my Wood Elf Bard (CHA 122) 'apprehensively' usually, but with the song on it jumps to 'amiably' as it does with most NPCs that I use the Song on.

With the onset of DoD, players have been running, flying, porting to HPH for exp that MM's give. Some find that the guards aren't too friendly here tho. And worse yet is if someone is doing the rogue epic some mobs go wild and kill anything near them. This faction fixes that.

Orc scalps can be collected from either orcs here in highpass or from orcs in crushbone. It must be "orc scalp"

Faction works by numbers and goes like this: (rough estimates)

    Ally ------------------------------------- +2000
    Amiably
    Kindly
    Warmly
    Indifferently ---------------------------- 0
    Apprehensive
    Dubiously
    Threateningly
Scowls at you, Ready to attack ----- -2000

And to do the turn in you have to be at least medium dubiously to captain ashlan, low dubioulsly will not work. To accomplish this you can:
a: sneak up behind him and turn in orc scalps.(makes you indifferent)
    b. have an illusion potion (human) to increase faction. (moves you up 1 level. Example: KoS becomes threatengly)
c: have an enchanter along with you who can cast benevolence on capt. (+200 faction)
d: have a person with invis cast it upon you after you hand him orc scalps but before you hit give.

Any combination of these will work or if you want or you can just kill. (see below)

There are 3 ways to increase that faction to do this quest.
    1. Kill orcs and gnolls in highpass to increase faction. (+1 to +5 faction)
    2. Kill Named Gnolls in EK. (+20 faction)
    3. Kill Named Orcs in Kithacoor.(+20 faction)
    4. Do quest http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=434

I am guessing orc scalps give like +5 as a faction hit because I went from Threatenly to indifferent in 300 scalps(15 stacks) turned in.

You will get 5 copper, 2 silver, 5 gold each time. Capt ashlan can be found from the ZI from kithacoor at about -574, 168 or wandering nearby if he hasn't been killed by orcs or players.

It's been so long since I've done this quest with my main I cannot remember if you need to be indifferent or better with Capt.Ashlan to do the turn in. I am trying to fix my Ogre's faction and the Capt. is giving him the "I have no need for this item..." text and handing the scalps back. Anyone confirm that 1) this quest is still working and 2) what faction rating you need to do this quest in the first place.
I'll take my answers off the air.
    Thanks :)

The best way to get orc scalps is in Crushbone they drop semi frequently and if there is not a low lvl grp in there they respawn quickly I offered 2pp each to a group and got almost a stack from them whatever works because faction is hard to get back =)

Hey all....this is a pretty out of date post...but here it is. I was disappointed with the supposed faction boost that you get from handing in the scalps. I handed in over 60...now in all honesty I handed in probably 20 of those in 4 scalps at a time..then chanced over to individual scalp turn ins. I started out with Dubios faction and ended with that same. I'm a 17th lvl Elven Ranger...

Ok, this is NOT the quest to do if you don't desperately need this faction. I turned in 4 STACKS (and yes I did turn them in individually) of scalps on my lvl 20 necro.

I saw some wonderful faction hits. But the xp and coin was just NOT worth it.

Get someone to wolf form you. It will bump you up plenty to do the orc scalps. The faction needed for the goblin ears is slightly higher, but if you turn in a lot of scalps first, you should have plenty.

Perhaps, but since this quest is in highpass, and Captain Ashlan is a human, those concerns are moot.

I got my IKSAR shaman to ally in highpass. I first killed orcs until I was dubious. Then I got a wolfform, which took me to apprehensive. I then turned in about 10 stacks of scalps, and a bunch of goblin ears, and by the time I was done, I was ally. I also got a bunch of good halfling faction killing the goblins, so now am not KOS is Rivervale, highpass, and 2 parts of freeport (at least to guards).

Ashlan is on the overpass as you come into High Hold from Kithicor Forest. As you fight off the orcs, look to the left and there is a ramp there. Go up the ramp and you will see Ashlan.

This is a great quest, in my opinion. Not only do you get good faction (without losing any, which is even better), but you get about 6 gold PER scalp. So if you turn in 20 scalps (easy to get), that's 120 gold, which is 12pp. Good money for casters who need the pp for spells. Back when my Shaman was young, I turned in over 100 scalps in a day. That's 60pp for very little work, considering you can find scalps rotting on corpses in CB all the time.

EDIT: And since you're hunting in CB, you'll be looting a lot of belts, so that makes up for this quest's crappy experience.

The reason to do this quest is for faction. You go to CRUSHBONE (Works from expierience) and kill all in site. Get scalps. Hand in to Ashlan. BOOM... Faction + and no faction -. Did at dub. Went from dub to amiable in 8 stacks (160 scalps). I got app at 4 stacks, indif at 6 stacks, and amiable at 8. Just my 2 cents.

My Frog Pally just turned in orc scalps to the Captain and my faction with him was WAY APPREHENSIVE and I got the gold.

    O my bad!
I did this qeust second time. First time I did it with my warrior lvl 18 (Barbarian). To be honest I didn't need to raise faction but I hoped to get some exp. Every time I gave Orc Scalps to Captain Ashlain (or so) message said - You gained experience. First time I used about 30 scalps. No visible exp.
Ok I thought maybe I need to be lower lvl.
Today I moved there with my lvl 9 druid and I gave this captain 27 orc scalps. Again message said - You gained exp... - but nothing moved in my exp bar. I started with 76% and finished at 76% :-(:-(:-(

However money I got - some golds for every scalp!

Good luck to everyone with this quest - I wont try it anymore.

The fastest way to raise your Highhold Pass guard faction is to kill the 4 named Orcs in Kithicor forest. Zone into Kith from HHP, turn south (to your right) and follow the wall until you get to the bottom edge of the zone. In this corner spawns 4 named orcs (the Shraloks), they have a fast respawn time and are great exp at 20-22. Killing these Orcs will raise your faction a lot faster than killing the Orcs in HHP.

I can also confirm that the "Orc scalps" that drop from CB Orcs, work for the Orc scalp quest in HHP.

    Best of Luck,

I see a lot of faction posts. There is a lot you can do to raise fation with these guys, you can kill the bandits just out front in the caves from what I understand, turn in the scalp, kill gobbies... (just get back there, get bound, and dont come up...) or turn in gobbie ears when not kos.
