This quest begins with Larsk Juton in Surefall Glade. He is located behind the guild house north-northeast from the zone-in tunnel.

You say, 'Hail, Larsk Juton'

Larsk Juton says 'Hail, Adventurer! I hope you are enjoying your time in Surefall Glade. You must be careful when leaving the Jaggedpine. There have been many report of [Sabertooths] attacking travelers.'

You say, 'What are Sabertooths?'

Larsk Juton says 'The gnolls of Blackburrow are called Sabertooths. They have been seen in force on a regular basis. They are surely up to something. We have even heard rumors of a [pact] between Qeynos merchants and the dogs.'

You say, 'What pact?'

Larsk Juton says 'Sources have come forward to tell of a pact between a merchant of Qeynos and the Sabertooths. It all has to do with blades and brew. We hear that a meeting will occur soon, somewhere in the Qeynos Hills at night. Do not fear, we shall find a brave ranger to [halt this meeting].'

You say, 'I will halt this meeting.'

Larsk Juton says 'Very good of you. Stop this meeting by killing the gnoll in Qeynos Hills. We hear that he shall be there in the late evening, and that his name is Furgoot or Furgy, something like that. Find him and kill him. I want his head. And if you should find any evidence of who the merchant is, be sure to hand it over to me.'

Gnasher Furgutt may be found in Qeynos Hills. This is a Gnoll that has been known to appear in the area outside Blackburrow and in the very central part of the zone.

You say, 'Hail, Gnasher Furgutt'

Gnasher Furgutt says 'Who are you? Did McNeal send you? If not, you would do yourself good to leave Gnasher alone. I have friends in high places.'

Gnasher Furgutt says 'Grrrrr!! You'd best run! If Gnasher dies, more than Sabertooths will be after you.'

Gnasher Furgutt has been slain by _____!
Gnasher Furgutt's corpse says 'Uuungghh!! You fool. Gnasher have human friends. They not be happy.. Bash you!!'
Your faction standing with Circle Of Unseen Hands got worse.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Qeynos got better.
Your faction standing with Corrupt Qeynos Guards got worse.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos got better.
Your faction standing with Kane Bayle got worse.

He always drops a "Gnoll Head" (identifies as "Gnasher's Head"). He sometimes drops a "Tattered Note" which reads:

1 case Blackburrow Stout for McNeal Jocub of Qeynos

Bring the "Gnoll Head" to Larsk Juton:

Larsk Juton says 'So, I see you rid the hills of the beast. Good work! I have a reward for you. I hope it will be usefull. I am afraid this gnoll's death will not halt the alliance between the two. I shall require your services to [assist in the extermination of the gnoll brewers].'

Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk has been adjusted by 6.

You gain experience!!
You receive 3 gold from Larsk Juton.

You receive a random low-level weapon or piece of low-level armor.

If you got a "Tattered Note" from Gnasher Furgutt, turn that in as well:

Larsk Juton says 'Fine work, _____. Hmmm. It seems this needs taking care of. Take this note to the Captain of the City Guard in Qeynos. His name is Captain Tillin. He will have to attend to this matter. Also... Let me see the gnoll's head. I must know you killed him. Be safe, my friend. I am sure that whoever this McNeal is, he was simply a lackey. Whoever he works for is most likely going to be looking for you. Watch your back in Qeynos.'

Your faction standing with Protectors of Pine has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Sabertooths of Blackburrow has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos could not possibly get any better.
You gain experience!!
You receive 9 copper from Larsk Juton.
You receive 4 silver from Larsk Juton.
You receive 1 gold from Larsk Juton.

You receive another note "Tattered Note"

Head to South Qeynos, and hand in this other note "Tattered Note" to Captain Tillin:

You offered 1 Tattered Note to Captain Tillin.

Captain Tillin says, 'I heard you were on your way. I have called for the state [executioner]. She should be on her way now. She will deal with our friend, McNeal Jocub. Thank you for your help, citizen.'

Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos has been adjusted by 40.
Your faction standing with Antonius Bayle has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Corrupt Qeynos Guards has been adjusted by -6.

You receive 5 silver from Captain Tillin.
You receive 2 gold from Captain Tillin.
You receive 1 platinum from Captain Tillin.
You complete the trade with Captain Tillin.

You receive "Medal of Merit", and an NPC called "Executioner" spawns.

You say, 'executioner'

Captain Tillin says, 'The executioner is quite an exceptional person. [Field Marshall Ralem] happened upon her while on a secret operation in Everfrost Peaks. They fought side by side against some creature the locals named Iceberg. The creature escaped. Ralem was grateful and eventually recruited her when she decided to separate from the guards of Halas.'

You say, 'Field Marshall Ralem'

Captain Tillin says, 'Field Marshall Ralem Christof is in charge of a brigade of roving rangers, druids and warriors. He hails from the Jaggedpine. He is quite an exceptional ranger. No one is ever really sure where he is. His brigade is constantly on the move.'

Executioner says 'Sir. You called for me?'

Captain Tillin says 'Ah. Good. You have arrived. (Executioner], could you please visit McNeal Jocub at Fish's Tavern. He has violated our laws and the sentence is death.'

Executioner says 'Aye sir!'

You say, 'Hail, Executioner'

Executioner says 'I have no time to talk, citizen. Please, step aside!'

Executioner says 'McNeal Jocub? You have been found guilty of crimes against the city of Qeynos.'

McNeal Jocub says 'You shall never take me alive!!'

The Executioner seems to take McNel Jocub at his word, as he wanders off and disappears.

Been digging around npc dialogue for more lore on Field Marshall Ralem Christoff mentioned in this quest, found this :

[Wed Mar 29 19:01:20 2023] You say, 'ralem'
[Wed Mar 29 19:01:20 2023] Te`Anara says, 'Ralem Christoff is one of the finest warriors to come out of the Jaggedpine. He was born and raised to be a ranger. He now serves Antonius Bayle as the Field Marshall of a roving patrol. His quiet, calm exterior hides a tactical genius and ferocious combatant.'

Keep up the good work. I am interested in doing some digging myself lore-wise. What's your method for checking for undocumented lore?

i made about 20 hotkeys that are like "who what when where how why" followed by about 10 things, like "qeynos, freeport, etc." or "king kazon stormhammer, king akanon" on each line, so i go to each npc and hit each hotkey to ask about 200 questions in less than 10 seconds. Once you find a hit in the hotkey, you gotta figure out which thing they responded to. As I learn more about the lore in each area, i add to the hotkeys more. I sorted them so that there's one for each city basically, and then one that asks generic questions (which i didn't stack multiple questions because they generally have hits for most lines, like "where inn?" "where bank?" "where to buy food?" "where forge?" etc. words like "is" and "the" aren't generally in their text triggers. In the surefall area, i have hotkeys asking about ralem christoff, mammoth, baobob and chanda miller, talym shoontar, poachers, great tunarbos - etc. I've found tons of dialogues that were pretty buried, or at least not apparent. Most aren't really too interesting, but there are some gems out there with lore. I posted some of the stuff I found on the west wastes dragons and zlandicar on their allakhazam pages last year.

Confirmed Larsk will not take the gnoll head until you hit Amiable with Jaggedpine Treefolk faction.
He will take the note at Indifferent though.

There is a new [bracketed trigger keyword] of "executioner" that wasn't bracketed before, in the response from Captain Tillin after you turn in the Tattered Note from Larsk Juton.

Quote:
[Sat Jun 17 02:52:38 2017] Captain Tillin says, 'I heard you were on your way. I have called for the state [executioner]. She should be on her way now. She will deal with our friend, McNeal Jocub. Thank you for your help, citizen.'

[Sat Jun 17 02:52:44 2017] You say, 'executioner'

[Sat Jun 17 02:52:44 2017] Captain Tillin says, 'The executioner is quite an exceptional person. [Field Marshall Ralem] happened upon her while on a secret operation in Everfrost Peaks. They fought side by side against some creature the locals named Iceberg. The creature escaped. Ralem was grateful and eventually recruited her when she decided to separate from the guards of Halas.'

[Sat Jun 17 02:52:48 2017] You say, 'Field Marshall Ralem'

[Sat Jun 17 02:52:48 2017] Captain Tillin says, 'Field Marshall Ralem Christof is in charge of a brigade of roving rangers, druids and warriors. He hails from the Jaggedpine. He is quite an exceptional ranger. No one is ever really sure where he is. His brigade is constantly on the move.'

Same [keyword] so same response to [Executioner] here. Then eventually when the Executioner arrives, again the word "Executioner" is now [bracketed] when it wasn't before:

Quote:

[Sat Jun 17 02:53:26 2017] Captain Tillin says, 'Ah. Good. You have arrived. [Executioner], could you please visit McNeal Jocub at Fish's Tavern. He has violated our laws and the sentence is death.'

[Sat Jun 17 02:53:26 2017] Executioner says, 'Aye sir!'

The rest of the text seems to be the same as currently listed.

Quote:
[Sat Jun 17 02:54:19 2017] You say, 'Hail, Executioner'

[Sat Jun 17 02:54:20 2017] Executioner says, 'I have no time to talk, citizen. Please, step aside!'

[Sat Jun 17 02:57:18 2017] Executioner says, 'McNeal Jocub? You have been found guilty of crimes against the city of Qeynos.'

[Sat Jun 17 02:57:18 2017] McNeal Jocub says, 'You shall never take me alive!'

Dialogue is as follows:

You say "Hail, Larsk Juton".
Larsk Juton says, "Hail, Adventurer! I hope you are enjoying your time in Surefall Glade. You must be careful when leaving the Jaggedpine. There have been many report of (Sabertooths) attacking travelers."
You say "What are Sabertooths?"
Larsk Juton says "The gnolls of Blackburrow are called Sabertooths. They have been seen in force on a regular basis. They are surely up to something. We have even heard rumors of a (pact) between Qeynos merchants and the dogs."
You say "What pact?"
Larsk Juton says "Sources have come forward to tell of a pact between a merchant of Qeynos and the Sabertooths. It all has to do with blades and brew. We hear that a meeting will occur soon, somewhere in the Qeynos Hills at night. Do not fear, we shall find a brave ranger to (halt this meeting)."
You say "I will halt this meeting."
Larsk Juton says "Very good of you. Stop this meeting by killing the gnoll in Qeynos Hills. We hear that he shall be there in the late evening, and that his name is Furgoot or Furgy, something like that. Find him and kill him. I want his head. And if you should find any evidence of who the merchant is, be sure to hand it over to me."

When you give him the head, he replies:
Larsk Juton says "So, I see you rid the hills of the beast. Good work! I have a reward for you. I hope it will be useful. I am afraid this gnoll's death will not halt the alliance between the two. I shall require your services to (assist in the extermination of the gnoll brewers.)"

You gain in faction standing with Protectors of the Pine, Jaggedpine Treefolk, and Guards of Qeynos. You lose in faction standing with Sabertooths of Blackburrow. You gain experience, and 4 gold. You are also given a tattered note.

Caught this gnoll at 3872.94 - 865.55 4.52. He popped at 11:00pm game time. Gave head to Larsk Juton then gave note to him. No reward other than sword and coin. Took note to Tillin and got additional xp and medal.

There is also another reward not mentioned. The ranger guild leader you give the head and note to, also gives you a raw-hide tunic, which is nice if you are a newbie starting with nothing. I think you have to give him both the head and the note at the same time, though, so be sure you have them both.

Can anyone confirm this on a non-Progression server?

Gnasher spawned at 10pm near the opening to Blackburrow. Killed him, only dropped head. So no Medal for me.

I've spent several nights waiting for gnasher with my lvl 11 ranger from the black burrow entrance to the lake on the east side of the hills and he never shows up on my tracking. Is he not coming out anymore or am i looking in the wrong spots?

The time is almost exact!! I killed all knolls and Giant field rats for about 30 mins, real time.

The hut across from BB is where I saw him running. Killed him. Got Head and note.

Went back to SG. Larsk Juton is MIA. I waited there for 1 1/2 hours real time and gone. Am I looking in the right place??? Behind the Ranger Guild house, by the water??

This quest still works--Got Gnasher this morning and he dropped head, and note. Turned both in to Larsk in Surefall and he gave the note back to me advising me to take it to Tillin (will do that tomorrow). I got XP and an AC8 tunic and a little money and faction for the head.
Where is he
# Aug 01 2003 at 3:07 PM Rating: Decent
Can't seem to find him anywhere. I don't have track. What are the upper hills? The ones near Surefall? Or the ones that run along the eastern side of QH?

Thanks,

I've been looking for days (literally)

I did this quest as an 18th level Ranger; it was an easy quest except for one tiny problem-the Millers. I have never had a problem with them before.
With track you can find Furgutt. He is found in the upper hills before morning light. I Rooted, snared, Flame Lick him and hit him hard.
I grabed my prize head and went back to Surefall Glad. I did not make it. As soon as the Millers; (who of course are always sitting around the campfire)saw me, they attacked me-and of course the guards standing there had to help.
I have been KOS to them ever since.
Someone want to explain why; and how I can stop the Millers with out having to keep killing them. They will foul up your faction with the Merchants.
You can turn in both note and head at the same time and get xps.

Are you sure it was Gnasher you killed? And not Furball Miller instead. Killed him a few and took some nasty faction hits.

The Millers are on Karana Residents faction which shouldn't be affected by killing Gnasher. I have done the quest numerous times and had no problem with the Millers. You must have lowered your faction some other way. Killing innocent farmers (not the ones at the bandit camp) and other residents of WK destroys this faction fast. Doing quests for the evil guilds in the Qeynos sewers also lowers this faction. You can raise it back up by doing the second half of the gnoll fang quest which is turning the moonstones in to the bartender in the back room at Fishs Ale.
