This quest begins with Larsk Juton in Surefall Glade. He is located behind the guild house north-northeast from the zone-in tunnel.

You say, 'Hail, Larsk Juton'

Larsk Juton says 'Hail, Adventurer! I hope you are enjoying your time in Surefall Glade. You must be careful when leaving the Jaggedpine. There have been many report of [Sabertooths] attacking travelers.'

You say, 'What are Sabertooths?'

Larsk Juton says 'The gnolls of Blackburrow are called Sabertooths. They have been seen in force on a regular basis. They are surely up to something. We have even heard rumors of a [pact] between Qeynos merchants and the dogs.'

You say, 'What pact?'

Larsk Juton says 'Sources have come forward to tell of a pact between a merchant of Qeynos and the Sabertooths. It all has to do with blades and brew. We hear that a meeting will occur soon, somewhere in the Qeynos Hills at night. Do not fear, we shall find a brave ranger to [halt this meeting].'

You say, 'I will halt this meeting.'

Larsk Juton says 'Very good of you. Stop this meeting by killing the gnoll in Qeynos Hills. We hear that he shall be there in the late evening, and that his name is Furgoot or Furgy, something like that. Find him and kill him. I want his head. And if you should find any evidence of who the merchant is, be sure to hand it over to me.'

Gnasher Furgutt may be found in Qeynos Hills. This is a Gnoll that has been known to appear in the area outside Blackburrow and in the very central part of the zone.

You say, 'Hail, Gnasher Furgutt'

Gnasher Furgutt says 'Who are you? Did McNeal send you? If not, you would do yourself good to leave Gnasher alone. I have friends in high places.'

Gnasher Furgutt says 'Grrrrr!! You'd best run! If Gnasher dies, more than Sabertooths will be after you.'

Gnasher Furgutt has been slain by _____!
Gnasher Furgutt's corpse says 'Uuungghh!! You fool. Gnasher have human friends. They not be happy.. Bash you!!'
Your faction standing with Circle Of Unseen Hands got worse.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Qeynos got better.
Your faction standing with Corrupt Qeynos Guards got worse.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos got better.
Your faction standing with Kane Bayle got worse.

He always drops a "Gnoll Head" (identifies as "Gnasher's Head"). He sometimes drops a "Tattered Note" which reads:

1 case Blackburrow Stout for McNeal Jocub of Qeynos

Bring the "Gnoll Head" to Larsk Juton:

Larsk Juton says 'So, I see you rid the hills of the beast. Good work! I have a reward for you. I hope it will be usefull. I am afraid this gnoll's death will not halt the alliance between the two. I shall require your services to [assist in the extermination of the gnoll brewers].'

Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Sabertooths of Blackburrow has been adjusted by -3.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos has been adjusted by 1.
You gain experience!!
You receive 3 gold from Larsk Juton.

You receive a random low-level weapon or piece of low-level armor.

If you got a "Tattered Note" from Gnasher Furgutt, turn that in as well:

Larsk Juton says 'Fine work, _____. Hmmm. It seems this needs taking care of. Take this note to the Captain of the City Guard in Qeynos. His name is Captain Tillin. He will have to attend to this matter. Also... Let me see the gnoll's head. I must know you killed him. Be safe, my friend. I am sure that whoever this McNeal is, he was simply a lackey. Whoever he works for is most likely going to be looking for you. Watch your back in Qeynos.'

Your faction standing with Protectors of Pine has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Sabertooths of Blackburrow has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos could not possibly get any better.
You gain experience!!
You receive 9 copper from Larsk Juton.
You receive 4 silver from Larsk Juton.
You receive 1 gold from Larsk Juton.

You receive another note "Tattered Note"

Head to South Qeynos, and hand in this other note "Tattered Note" to Captain Tillin:

You offered 1 Tattered Note to Captain Tillin.

Captain Tillin says, 'I heard you were on your way. I have called for the state [executioner]. She should be on her way now. She will deal with our friend, McNeal Jocub. Thank you for your help, citizen.'

Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos has been adjusted by 40.
Your faction standing with Antonius Bayle has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Corrupt Qeynos Guards has been adjusted by -6.
Your faction standing with Circle of Unseen Hands has been adjusted by -10.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Qeynos has been adjusted by 4.
You gain experience (with a bonus)! (0.025%)
You receive 5 silver from Captain Tillin.
You receive 2 gold from Captain Tillin.
You receive 1 platinum from Captain Tillin.
You complete the trade with Captain Tillin.

You receive "Medal of Merit", and an NPC called "Executioner" spawns.

You say, 'executioner'

Captain Tillin says, 'The executioner is quite an exceptional person. [Field Marshall Ralem] happened upon her while on a secret operation in Everfrost Peaks. They fought side by side against some creature the locals named Iceberg. The creature escaped. Ralem was grateful and eventually recruited her when she decided to separate from the guards of Halas.'

You say, 'Field Marshall Ralem'

Captain Tillin says, 'Field Marshall Ralem Christof is in charge of a brigade of roving rangers, druids and warriors. He hails from the Jaggedpine. He is quite an exceptional ranger. No one is ever really sure where he is. His brigade is constantly on the move.'

Executioner says 'Sir. You called for me?'

Captain Tillin says 'Ah. Good. You have arrived. (Executioner], could you please visit McNeal Jocub at Fish's Tavern. He has violated our laws and the sentence is death.'

Executioner says 'Aye sir!'

You say, 'Hail, Executioner'

Executioner says 'I have no time to talk, citizen. Please, step aside!'

Executioner says 'McNeal Jocub? You have been found guilty of crimes against the city of Qeynos.'

McNeal Jocub says 'You shall never take me alive!!'

The Executioner seems to take McNel Jocub at his word, as he wanders off and disappears.

As a ranger I track him down. He is often located close to the store on road from Surefall to Queynos. On the West side of the road. If you have trouble finding him, ask a ranger for help.

ok to clear up the gnasher thing. I have cought him outside of BB at around 1am. idk if it is every night but i saw him there more times that i can count at that time. It is good to do for lowbies cuz the medal of merit raises ur charisma so those useless things u loot will be worth a little bit more. i have heard that u give the medal to a guy in the catacombs named, "the mumbling idiot". and he will give u his lvl 50 pet to play with while in the catacombs. but idk.. just a rumor. ok well i hope this helped

RE: Time
# Sep 04 2001 at 3:48 AM Rating: Default
I have to just mention something because I've heard too many people do this... you say "cons yellow to my poorly equipped lvl 7 ranger" and I've heard people say things like "cons blue to a 52 paladin" The cons are simply your level difference. The game doesn't calculate your chances by compiling all the equipment and spells you have at your disposal and analyze your ability to kill the target, it only reflects the difference in level. If it's green, it's about 5 or more levels less than you, if it's blue, it's 1-4 levels or so below you, if it's white, it's the same level as you, if it's yellow, it's 1 or 2 levels above you and if it's red, it's 3 or more levels above you... if your level 7 ranger had a wurmslayer or a yak, a fungi tunic, and a bunch of other uber items, gnasher is still going to con yellow to you. Just thought I'd rant about something stupid, not meaning to harass you or mock you, just letting you and everyone else know how it works. :)

LOL
/em shakes his head at the silly newbs

Also as you get higher the level range in which a MOB can be dark blue will get bigger and bigger, I believe. There is also of course the light blue group of MOB's now, that give the exp message when killed, but I think it's more of a joke. Maybe if you killed a hundred of them your bar might move, lol.

Done this quest about 4 times or so. Gnasher spawns outside or near BB you kill im and bring the stuff to Larsk(Gnasher doesnt always have the Scroll). Give Larsk the stuff and you get rawhide cloak(4AC) and the note back. I am a ranger so my faction was good. Give the note to Captain Tillin in qeynos and get the merit voila. you have it. You get a +5 Cha piece for your neck which is better than a silver cats eye agate. Juton will also give you info if you faction is good about the gnoll brewers.
Broken?

Is this quest broken? First of all, I couldn't even get the quest from Larsk, and secondly, when I did give him Gnasher's head he just gobbled it down without even a thank you.

OK so everyone doesn't know that if your faction is bad you can't do quests with whatever faction is bad. Now you know, and you are for the better now! Never ever give stuff away to an NPC unless you know for a fact that they will receive it correctly!

Here is a tip to do before turning stuff in for a quest. ASK THE PERSON ABOUT THE QUEST FIRST, if they don't tell you about it, they will not exept it.
RE: Broken?
# Sep 05 2001 at 12:23 PM Rating: Default
This is not always true, as i have had 2 chars in highpass hold who gave scalps to the captains at each end and recieved faction and exp. Neither captain replies when hailed at all though, so don't give absolute information like that when you obviously aren't absolutely sure, since you've now been proven wrong.
RE: Broken?
# Oct 04 2001 at 1:36 PM Rating: Default
I have NEVER gotten ANY quest done without being able to talk to the person. They will accept the item without giving you anything in return if you don't have the faction, period. Now, how much faction is needed depends on the quest and those giving the quest. For me? I'll just alliance him to make him amiable and get the quest anyway with my 14th level chanter.... hee hee!

you must not have tried very many times - lots of NPC's will respond to giving them stuff even if they dont tell you about the quest when you hail them. I just wouldnt try it unless the stuff your giving them is pretty easy to replace. if they just take it and say "thanks for your meagre gift" you wont be out hours of camping.
Easy Quest! Spawns....

This was a fairly easy quest...Gnasher spawned for me on the hill right buy the BB entrance. I waited around in Q.Hills for about an hour killing wisps when he appeared on my tracking. I believe he only spawns at night (thats when i got him). After an easy battle i got his head and the letter. Upon turing the hea over to the guy in the glades i didnt get the cloak quest (not enouph faction prehaps?) :-( BTW the medal i ok ..not really that big of deal. Good luck in your hunt.

You know I took one of my characters and got this medal once...then I realized:

Splitpaw Tooth Necklace AC2 CHA+5 SV POISON +5

...and it's tradeable so if you don't need a 5 charisma necklace anymore sell yours. I ran to south karana at level 10 and bought one from someone camping the spires outside paw, another time someone just gave me one and if your high enough level you can kill a few splitpaw gnolls and get your own. The 5 charisma makes a little difference to vendors but I found the quest a little annoying waiting for gnasher to spawn, even for someone who likes to do quests, and I wouldn't really reccomend this one unless you run into gnasher one night in the hills.

I love doing this quest, not because of the item I get for the head (because it's never a good item, it's usually something I already have) but because the note part... I love watching McNeal fight for his life! :)

If you give Larsk the note that you can get on Gnashers corpse you get XP, coin and he asks for the head. He gives the note back to continue the quest into Qeynos. Hope this helps.

As a 9th lvl Chanter, I ran across Gnasher, slayed him and turned in the head to Larsk. I got no reward, but instead got a cold shoulder and a message that indicated I was a poacher. I had lots of "good faction" for these folk, though I had made the msiatek of asking "Who is Mammoth?"

I also could not get the quest dialogue back from Larsk. Does this quest work for all or just Rangers, etc.?

Bears in cave
# Sep 14 2000 at 11:26 AM Rating: Default
If you're a high enough level to take Gnasher, you're probably high enough that brown bears simply ignore you, and the grizzlies don't wander the cave. Be sure not to sit down and meditate in the cave or walk too close to the gizzlies, and use the side entrance to the cave, not the one behind the waterfall. Killing poachers is probably the easier way to gain faction compared to doing the druid quests. Plus you get around 5gp for each head you turn in.
Faction and Gnasher spawn
# Sep 14 2000 at 11:13 AM Rating: Excellent
I raised faction fairly quickly with the Protectors of Pine by doing the poacher quest. Doesn't require any zoning, just locating and killing the poacher in the cave. I turned in approximately 8 heads, including one gnoll head (you get a very nice bow for that), and went from dubious to amiable. Larsk wouldn't give me the quest until he regarded me amiably.
Now if only I can figure out where Gnasher spawns. I don't have tracking and have waited on the small hill next to the BB entrance to the south for many a game night, yet I haven't seen him. Does he wander immediately upon spawning?
Gnasher spawn
# Feb 19 2001 at 12:11 PM Rating: Default
For me he spawned almost directly between BB and the temple, then started walking straight over to the lake. I got him on tracking ~5-15 seconds after he spawned (i was refreshing it specifically for him.)

I'd been keeping an eye out for quite a while (~6 hours :P) but I'd been doing other stuff too so I may have missed him earlier.

I also found him on the opposite side from BB entrance, south of the lake and moving towards N. Qeynos along the wall there. In game time was about 6 a.m., I had just dinged 14 off a wisp, and turned to see him bearing down on me. Conned Dark Blue to me, but did not attack. So I hit Mend and popped him with a Shuriken to get his attention. Not too rough a fight, but he hit a couple of times for damage in the 20's, and bashed/stunned me a couple of times.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Ran into him last night as I was approaching Blackburrow entrance from the guard tower in Qeynos Hills. He largely ignored me, of course, but someone else pounced and trounced him in short order.

I did this quest with no problems, but my faction was already pretty good. The faction adjustments are as follows:

Turning in the head to Larsk Juton == Protecters of Pine +, Jagged Pine Treefolk +, Guards of Qeynos +, Sabertooths -.

Turning in the note to Larsk Juton == Protecters of Pine +, Jagged Pine Treefolk +, Guards of Qeynos +, Sabertooths -.

Turning in the note to Captian Tillan == Qenoys Guards +, Antonius Beryll +, Corrupt Guards -, Unseen Hands -.

The battle between the bartender and the executioner is kind of neat to watch. It takes her a couple of minutes to get there, I don't know where she starts from. The medal has been updated to LORE and NO DROP so you can't sell it to another player =(

Killing gnolls raised my faction with the Jaggedpine Treefolk but most of Surefall including Larsk hates me. After weeks I finally found Gnasher and risked it all to fight him at half health and 20% mana. I didn't get the note but I got the head at least and I searched for Larsk for an hour and when I finally gave it to him I got zip because he hates me. How can I raise faction with him besides killing poachers because the bears attack me and then if I kill them all of Surefall attacks me. I am on the Lanys T'vyl server.

Killing gnolls only raises your faction with the Druids in Surefall Glade, the Jaggedpine Treefolk. It doesn't raise your faction with the Rangers, who are the Protectors of Pine.

To raise your Ranger faction, try doing quests for the Surefall Glade Druids; most of those quests raise the Protectors of Pine faction.

However, once you have really bad faction, you may not be able to repair it again.

(The best solution is to not do things that wreck your faction in the first place.)
RE: Faction
# Jan 23 2001 at 4:57 AM Rating: Default
Kill poachers (the ones in the bear caves are about level 10 or so--they are harder than they con--the ones in Toxx Forest are about level 4 and their heads work just fine). This will lower your faction with the Circle of Unseen Hands. You can repair that faction by killing Karana Bandits. Note: don't kill Talym Shoontar though. He may be an infamous poacher, but he also seems to be friends with the Ranger guildmaster (who has put a bounty on his head--these guys should go on Oprah) and killing him will hurt your Surefall factions.
