After you turn in Gnasher's head to Larsk Juton, he will sometimes say that he requires your services to [assist in the extermination of the gnoll brewers].

You say, 'say I will assist in the extermination of the gnoll brewers'

Larsk Juton says 'Within the bowels of Blackburrow, our scouts have reported seeing the gnoll brewers. You will go and brave the lair of the dogs and slay these brewers in order to cease the flow of [Blackburrow Stout]. During your mission, should you find any Blackburrow casks, you must return them to me. When you have recovered three of these casks, I shall award you the [Cloak of Jaggedpine].'

You say, 'Blackburrow Stout'

Larsk Juton says 'Blackburrow Stout is a grog created by the gnolls of Blackburrow. It is no surprise that the grog is illegal in Qeynos. Even so, I hear there are some barkeeps who dare sell it.'

You say, 'Cloak of Jaggedpine'

Larsk Juton says 'The Cloak of Jaggedpine was made for those loyal to the ways of the forest. It is enchanted to increase one's dexterity. It is awarded to those who have aided in our cause to rid the land of those vile dogs called the Sabertooths. Should you earn one, be sure to hold onto it - you never know when we may alter the enchantments placed upon the cloak.'

Larsk Juton says 'Good work, but I must see at least three Blackburrow casks before I can reward you with the [Cloak of Jaggedpine].'
Larsk Juton says 'Good work, but I must see at least three Blackburrow casks before I can reward you with the [Cloak of Jaggedpine].'
Larsk Juton says 'You have done well and served the people of the forest through this brave and noble deed. I now bestow upon you our friendship and reward you with the [Cloak of Jaggedpine]. Wear it as a mark of your allegiance.'

165 spawns for 3 casks

It took me 165 spawns to get 3 casks. I saw 20 gnoll brewers, 145 gnoll guardsman, and 0 master brewers. I also killed about 10 spawns before I started keeping track, which were all guardsmen. I saw brewers on spawn number 4, 7, 8, 29, 38, 49, 51, 55 (cask), 69, 92, 93 (cask), 109, 134, 138, 142, 145, 146, 147, 161, and 165 (cask). Spawn rates are between 13.5 minutes and 17.5 minutes usually. And yes, the brewer/guard spawns around -32,-32 and then wanders over to the barrels after maybe 10 minutes. They do eventually wander back to the water as well.

I finally got my Cloak of Jaggedpine at level 49 and I wear it to show my allegiance.

At last

Well I got three casks, thanks to Aceeyed who replaced the one I gave to Finstab.

I turned them in to Larsk. Unbeknownst to me, one of my casks had a whole bunch of stuff in it. He gave it back. I panicked, and wondered why it wasn't working. Then I looked inside-WHOOPS. Emptied it out and gave him the cask. He gave me the cloak. And might I add, it looks fantastic.

I am very happy that I finished this quest. It took a long time, but the satisfaction of completing it is great.

Note: You can turn in the Casks one at a time. I don't know if there is a certain time that you have to get them all, but I turned in two and then two or three minutes later, I turned in the last one.

My Tunare hold a candle to all of your footpaths.

ok Blackburrow Stout CANNOT be brewed, buy it in qeynos or do the gnoll fang quest for them. Casks are only for the rogue or ranger quests. they sell on Prexus all the time for less than 200p anyone who pays more must be too rich to care. they aren't that hard to get.

You used to be able to brew it in the casks. I used to do it myself. It was probably changed in a patch.

Thisa cask is also used to brew blackburrow stout. Does the stout havy any practical purpose, other than to practice your brewing (and alcohol tolerance with the finished product, hehe!)? Or is it just the casks themselves that have any practical purpose?

The Cask is also used in the Rogue Redemption Quest, a fairly outdated quest that yields the Burning Rapier and used to be required for the epic.

I've heard of some minor quest you can do by turning the stout into someone in Qeynos, but it's very very minor and not worth the time. I'm not even sure if it exists, because it's not in the database here, and I've only heard about it one time.

Actual Spawn Spot
# Nov 06 2002 at 7:30 AM Rating: Excellent
The actual spawn point of Brewers and their placeholders is approximately 24.07, 49.29, -145.91. Which is next to the lake close to the barrels.
The Brewers and their placeholders (Always Gnoll Guardsmen) spawn here and then after a little while walk over to the barrels.
If you want to save a good ammount of time with this quest camp this spot. I just sat in the corner adjacent to this and waited. You can save about 10 minutes each spawn, which adds up to a lot of time on this quest!
Good luck!

No, the quests can be done independently.

With the addition of the new zone the Jaggedpine Forest, now would be the most likly time for a quest to upgrade the cloak to surface. So everyone should keep their eyes peeled.

change stats
# Mar 31 2002 at 1:10 AM Rating: Default
when you finish the quest, the guy says that they might change the stats on it or..
"You should keep this, for you never know when we may decide to alter the enchantments on it."
so what if Verant decides to do this? then whos gonna be sorry when they didnt get their new Cloak of Jagged pine with 50% haste oooooooooh...
RE: change stats
# Aug 08 2002 at 11:44 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah right -- they'll add 50% haste to this -- you'll just have to kill 4 level 70 mobs and then the 5th will be an NPC that spawns once a month. Any quest item with worthwhile stats is hard as hell to get.
RE: change stats
# Mar 27 2003 at 11:42 AM Rating: Decent
... I think the brewers only drop the cask once a month! I've killed tons of them with no cask drop.

I have, however, bought one off Frannie in SFG for 1cp! (Only cask I have, mind...)
Just a random mob
# Mar 26 2002 at 2:41 PM Rating: Decent
When i camped em, it seemed like this

1 brewer out of 5 guardsmen
1 Master Brewer out of 5 brewers

so 1 MB = 5 dead brewers = 25 guardsman

It might be a bit off, but its fairly acurate. with 18 min between spawns, you get very bored of gems there....or very good at Gems ;P

ok let me try again. first post lol.
I think the spawn is determined by speaking to larsk. Hardly anyone is ever there at least on the ZEEB server, but anytime i completed the gnasher quest there would be next to no one else in the zone, if not just myself. But if brewers spawn so rarely, and the brewer quest is triggered RARELY, then Formel may be on to something. Speaking to larsk might just be what spawns the brewers.
RE: brewer spawns
# Jul 17 2002 at 7:00 PM Rating: Decent
The brewer spawns when you kill its place holder which is the Guardsman down by the river with the razorgills in it. The spawn is not triggered but you may see the brewer by the barrels because it wanders overthere if no one has killed it.

# Mar 14 2002 at 3:34 AM Rating: Default
Well, after spending a week around BB, 4 RL hours a day I got the 3 casks (one for my self, another from Realek and another from Camomil, thanks to both!!).
I just saw 4 gnolls brewers in this time and I was at spot 32,32 going around between pops (18 min).
I killed commanders, elites, shaman, splitpaws (thanks Vengador!) and finally I think is just random pop.
I didnt see any master brewer in all this time.

Just be patient, help people while waiting, practice fletching or any other skill (maybe brewering?!?)

Well, be safe and good luck in your travels!

Where's the Master?
# Mar 06 2002 at 7:02 PM Rating: Default
Hey everyone. I'm confused - where is the Master Brewer? When he spawns, is he in among the barrels under that little ledge, or is he on top of the ledge at the end of the bridges that go upwards? Please, someone tell me!

Hey all
I just finished this quest, level 41 ranger, yeah I know it's kinda sad, but I had some time to burn and I was curious so I did it. I guess I just wanted to say that if you have no patience (like me) this quest is a bad idea. I camped for a few hours, killed millions of gnolls and ended up buying 3 casks from other PC's at about 100pp each (which is a generous price)
So good luck to you on your travels, and stay safe
Facts on quest
# Feb 20 2002 at 5:27 AM Rating: Default
This was the first major quest I ever did on EQ, so I paid attention and here is the skinny. The brewers spawn between the bridge and snake ledge, by the water. A gnoll guardsman is the PH. Spawn cycle is about 18min. Brewer spawns an average of 1 in 4, with the cask being a very rare drop. Master Brewer is a very rare spawn, with the cask being common drop. A Master Brewer will sometimes spawn in the small cave to the left as you enter bb, but dont expect it. Be prepared to spend a lot of hours waiting and avoiding trains, best to do this when you are around 14 and the weaker gnolls are green, else you will be run over. Cloak is NODROP, so you cant buy one and will wear it proudly once you get it, if you can wait that long. Expect 6 hours of RL to get casks, minimum. Ask if anyone has a cask they dont want, you might get lucky. You should be able to get 100pp from a rouge for the cask. While youre at it, save a gnoll skin and sell him/her both at once, they will be thankful. IMHO, two casks would make the quest great, three is just painful.

I totaly agree with you, but I think that the brewers pop up after you empty the commander room. I been there for a while and I just killed a couple of brewers, but always show up when the commander and elite guards were killed.
I also use to kill the elite guards at the balcony up the 5 barrels. May them be the key?
Anyway, just dont be sitting around too much (you can practice fletching) and kill gnolls around just in case this are the key to pop up the brewers.
I didnt see any master brewer by now.
I will try to get the third cask today and clean the commander room to verify my theory.
Good luck to all and be safe!

P.S. Thanks to Realek for his spare cask!

I was in Black Burrow PL'ing My Love. Lo' and behold someone shouts...

/shout What Level is the Master Brewer?

I dart to search this fiend, and after 10 mintues of tracking, I finally kill him.

I got another cask!

Hmmm...with my cloak of Jaggedpine, I think I am gonna start Brewing with this thing. Until I find a rogue to sell it to! So...how much would you say? 1k? 750? Very Reasonable!

If you still have them, I could use a measly 3 so I can complete my quest. I have killed several gnoll brewers and a gnoll master with my lvl 14 Druid and have yet to see a cask. My character's is Narmoseldon, sen me tells if your interested in working something out. Also I am on the Tunare sever.

Thanks

I don't know if it is just my dumb luck, but it seems as if people have either forgotten the value of this item, or have never heard of it. I am on Mith Marr, and I have gotten 2 casks for FREE. 1 from a lucky newbie who ran out of room, and one from a lvl 23 warr. Maybe the people of Mith Marr are as generous as everyone says or simply just don't know about it!

WOOT Got my last one from a Master Brewer! Underneath the bridge, by the pond...just pops up.

Good luck all!

The casks are also part of the Rogue Epic quest... they're used for the Burning Rapier section (dunno anymore detail... never played a Rogue high enough to look at the Epic)
Does it do anything else besides the stats?

I have all 3 cask and im wondering if the cloak does anything else beside the stats. the top of this page says that you never know when we cast our enchantments on the cloak. what does he mean?

I was camping brewers tonight, and was relieved to see a Master Brewer, so I killed it. I went to loot his body, but instead of a cask, he had an item called "a Mammoth hide" No Drop, Lore Item, No Rent. It looks like the unrolled scroll that is "A word of..." such and such....any clue what the hide is for?

I wouldn't worry abou it. The quest has been the same for the last 2 years, since they have put it in. Maybe someday, when the development team realizes it needs new quests, they may go back and change this one, or add to it.
