This is a wizard-only quest. If you're not a wizard, Lairyn Debeian replies with a generic answer.

Lairyn Debeian is an Erudite in one of the houses surrounding the lighthouse in the Gulf of Gunthak at +1615, -50.

You say, 'Hail, Lairyn Debeian'

Lairyn Debeian peers up from his journal and smiles at you warmly, 'Greetings, friend. I was so involved in my research that I did not hear you approaching.' He closes the leather-bound tome and pats it with one slender hand. 'Please forgive my lack of courtesy. I am Lairyn from the order of the Crimson Hands, and this little book here is my life's work. I am currently unraveling the secret of a [new power] that has emerged on Broken Skull Rock.'

You say, 'What new power?'

Lairyn Debeian says 'The strange beasts known as Luggalds that reside on Broken Skull Rock have an amazing power over the dark waters of the deep. They are able to conjure it up in the form of an immense spear of ice. I have seen them do so with my own eyes, though I was watching from afar, of course. I would not dare venture close enough to anger the foul beasts. Their grasp of this magic is simply breathtaking, and from my observations alone, I am very close to unlocking their methods. Unfortunately, I have run into an obstacle, as I cannot complete my research without something more tangible. If only I were brave enough to get closer, or foolish enough. As you can see, I am more intellectual than adventurer.' At this, Lairyn chuckles and his spectacles slip a little further down his nose.

You say, 'I am brave enough.'

Lairyn Debeian gasps in apparent surprise, 'What? Are you certain you wish to put yourself in such a perilous position? Well I certainly can't turn down good help, so I'll tell you what I know. The Luggalds often utilize their spells against creatures in the waters of the harbor. Whether this is for practice, or for sport, or to ward off attackers I am not sure. I would suggest investigating the harbor for further evidence. Take this bag and bring me whatever you can find.'

He then hands you a Small Pouch. From here, swim south and find Aliaka Songscale, a named mermaid. She is hidden under a sunken boat, at 335, -565.

You say, 'Hail, Aliaka Songscale'

Aliaka Songscale flinches as you initially approach, but appears more at ease when she realizes you are not an immediate threat. 'Ah, thank Prexus you are not one of them. Not that this guarantees that you are any less dangerous, so please state your intentions clearly. We have suffered much [abuse] at the hands of other races, and in particular I do not appreciate the pain that the sea trolls inflict upon my sisters.'

You say, 'What abuse?'

Aliaka Songscale speaks, her visage one of sadness and despair, 'This shore has forever been the home of my people, but we are practically driven into hiding now, forced to flee and scatter when the Luggalds come near. At their whim, the fiendish beasts lance us with their icy spears. The cold chill bites and the pain is horrible. In fact, there are still fragments of the dark ice embedded in my scales from their last attack. I believe they only mean to torment and not kill us, as so far there have been few deaths. Now that you understand our plight, what is it you want from me?'

You say, 'I want the fragments of dark ice.'

Aliaka Songscale smirks, 'Forgive my hesitance in trusting a stranger, but the frozen shards are quite painful, and removing them would be even more so. Perhaps we can trade services? I will give you some willingly if you would complete a [task] first.'

You say, 'What task?'

Aliaka Songscale says 'As a sign of loyalty, and to avenge the innocent blood that was spilt by the Luggalds, I would like you to cut down some of the fiends and bring proof of their demise. Use whatever means necessary. Grant them no quarter and expect none in return. For each of their dark hearts, I will trade pieces of the ice that you seem so interested in. I will accept nothing else.'

Now, you need to get 4 Luggald hearts. These need to be turned into Aliaka, she will give you a Fragment of Dark Ice for each one you give her. They are a semi-rare drop off of the luggalds in the Crypt of Nadox, Dulak's Harbor and Torgiran Mines.

Aliaka Songscale clenches her jaw as she wrenches a glimmering obsidian shard from between her scales. 'As promised here is what you desired. What I wouldn't give to have them taste thier own bitter magic.'

Once you get 4 shards, combine them in your Small Pouch that Lairyn gave you. Give the Pouch of Dark Ice back to Lairyn and he will hand you a copy of Frozen Harpoon.

So, I have to ask, is there a second LoY spell for wizards? It seems to me that most casting classes have to quest two spells? Thanks!

"However, the problem is they are LORE and NO DROP, so you can only have one at a time."

I did this quest yesterday, the hearts are not LORE anymore, you can now collect all four.
not too hard

greetings all
this quest isn't hard at all. in a good group (i'm a 58 wiz) doing the luggald rooms in nadox, both upper and lower, will result in the Luggald Heart drops we need.
mind you, i was a tad lucky having stumbled upon a high level bard kiting like 40 luggalds at once, clearing a whole damn luggald room each time! got the 4 hearts in less than an hour *rubs hands*

ISS, ADI and FH, all the same spell, what's the point? Well the recast is fair, so if you have all 3 loaded, you can ignore recast, have spell haste 3, reverance or faith, quick damage 3, improved damage 3, and Iceflame of E'ci, mana pres 3, spell casting mastery 3, and you're doing about 5400 damage every 8 seconds as you cycle through the 3, for less than 900 mana...

Horrible Drop Rate
# May 24 2003 at 4:46 AM Rating: Decent
I was really disappointed in the drop rate .. which was zero. Party of 3 camped by bridge in Crypt of Nadox. We parked there for three hours and the only interesting that happened was a boar popped.

Which also dropped nothing.

Indeed a horrible drop rate but what else can ya do? Camped this same spot off and on all weekend. Got 3 hearts averaging maybe one every 4 hours or so with pretty steady pulling (almost all luggs cept for the occasional troll that got in the way.

We also got the boar once. Fun fight by dropped nothing for us either. Was Level 58.

Also got 2 fecund luggald skins in this same time period so those are just as rare if not more so.

I am a 60 Wizard in a guild where help is hard to come by (basically if I get one or two to help I will be lucky). I have a complete spell book through 59 except this spell so I really want it badly but cannot handle the luggald caves in Nadox solo (its already cost me level 60 twice) so Im looking for an easier spot. The post about the fort doesnt say if the hearts actually dropped there but I assume they did. What I want to know is A) Did they? B) Is this the fort with the town around it on the way to Dulak or the castle thing with the alternate entrance to Nadox? There are Luggalds in the castle but Ive seen none around the fort although I havent been inside the fort. In a nutshell any information anyone has on where to get hearts would be GREATLY appreciated! I have managed to get people together for Nadox one time so far we got two hearts in an hour and a half ( I only got one thanks to a Nimrod Cleric saying she needed one just after I looted first one which got me yelled at for ninja-looting the first one instead of offering to roll and got the second given to her. She sends me a tell next day saying she didnt need it after all but she'd be glad to MQ it. WRONG!) and now Im pretty much on my own cause no one wants to help a Ninja GRRRRRRR.

Hearts are no longer LORE. It took 2 hours to get the first 3 and 8 hours to get the last one - go figure.
Hearts no longer lore
# Apr 02 2003 at 9:48 PM Rating: Decent
Completed this quest today. Somewhere along the line they changed the hearts to where they are no longer lore, though they are still no drop.

Good luck on the luggalds, they seem to drop the hearts in streaks. I got two yesterday in roughly an hour. Today in the same spot we killed probably four or five times as many to get the other two hearts.

I have had similar experiences with other drops off of other mobs within LoY.
Dificulty of Quest

I'm a level 54 Beastlord on Sullon Zek and I was helping my lv 52 Wizard friend out with this quest. The 4 luggunds that spawn in Gulf of Gunthak are the easiest luggunds to kill cause they are level 35 or something around there. There are a lot of light blues that hang around that area so to be safe we worked our way into the fort from the entrance of the camp. There might be a way to click your invis off and start from inside the fort but it might be risky. It involved a lot of him invising and getting me a target for me to /assist onto since most of the mobs spawn in the buildings. Once in the fort I cleared a pull spot and pulled out the luggunds 1 at a time til the room was empty then we just sat in the room waiting for repop. At 54 these mobs are horibly easy, the only problem is with the density of the spawn...once you are in the room you are totally safe, just make sure to pull the 2 door guards when they pop. IVU isnt nessisary for this quest...it would be sorta nice to have but since most wizards dont have this spell anyway there are not many instances where it is needed. there are only 3 skeletons that spawn on the ship with the Mermaid on it. I landed right over the ship while /loc ing myself there and all 3 agroed on the wizard and I was able to pull them off him and take them down no problem. All of this was done Kei-less.

While I was scouting out the fort my invis and sow came off at the exact same time. Run1 was saving my *** until I had to jump in the water...Mobs shouldnt swim faster then 200 swiming!!! (well maybe fish and iksars)

I solved this without help from anyone because there was none to be found and it seemed as though all the wizards were not going to do it. I go to post about it and find that you can find it on Allakhazam now (it wasn't here this morning). Since I did all this hard work, you guys are going to see me list it here too.

1. Port to Stoneburnt Mountains. Face the cliff and then run left along the water to the boat where you have to run up to the door and click on it. This will zone you into the Gulf of Gunthak.

2. Find Lairyn Debeian in one of the huts outside of the lighthouse. I believe he's in the second hut from the drolvarg pen. He's a male Euridite.

3. Conversation goes as follows:

You say, "Hail, Lairyn Debeian."

"Greetings, friend. I was so involved in my research that I did not hear you approaching." He closes his leather-bound tome and pats it with one slender hand. "Please forgive my lack of courtesy. I am Lairyn fromt he Order of the Crimson Hands, and this little book here is my life's work. I am currently unraveling the secret of a [new power] that has emerged on Broken Skull Rock."

You say, "What new Power?"

The strange beasts known as Luggalds that reside on Broken Skull Rock have an amazing power over the dark waters of the deep. As you can see, I am more intellectual than adventurer." At this, Lairyn chuckles and his spectacles slip a little further down his nose.

You say, "I am brave enough."

Lairyn Debeian gasps in apparent surprise, "What? Are you certain you wish to put yourself in such a perilous position? Well I certainly can't turn down good help, so I'll tell you what I know. The Luggalds often utilize their spells against creatures in the waters of the harbor. Whether this is for practice or for sport, or to ward off attackers I am not sure. I would suggest investigating the harbor for further evidence. Take this bag & bring me whatever you can find."

He gives you a 4 slot pouch.

4. Mem Invis Undead, Invis, Gate and wear an EB item or be prepared to keep going to the top for air. Start off with IVU, jump in the water going south. You are looking for a large boat basically in that direction but the location of the mermaid is pos 332 neg 560 and her name is Aliaka Songscale. Be careful where you are swimming because there are mobs around her that will attack you. If you get into trouble, gate out. (I was bound at the lighthouse - if you don't want to do that, lesser evac.)

5. Conversation with the mermaid:

You say, "Hail Aliaka Songscale."

Aliaka Songscale flinches as you initially approach, but appears more at ease as she realizes you are not an immediate threat. "Ah, thank Prexus you are not one of them. Not that this guarantees that you are any less dangerous, so please state your intentions clearly. We have suffered much [abuse] at the hands of other races, and in particular I do not appreciate the pain that the sea trolls inflict upon my sisters."

You say, "What abuse?"

Aliaka Songscale speaks, her visage one of sadness and despair, "This shore has forever been the home of my people, but we are practically driven into hiding now, forced to flee and scatter when the Luggalds come near. At their whim, the fiendish beasts lance us with their icy spears. The cold chill bites and the pain is horrible. In fact, their are still fragments of the dark ice embedded in my scales since their last attack. I believe they only mean to torment and not kill us, as so far there have been few deaths. Now that you understand our plight, what is it you want from me?"

You say, "I want the ice spear."

Aliaka Songspear smirks, "Forgive my hesitance in trusting a stranger, but the frozen shards are quite painful, and removing them would be even more so. Perhaps we can trade services? I would give you some willingly if you would complete a [task] first.

You say, "What task?"

Aliaka Songscale says, "As a sign of loyalty, and to avenge the innocent blood that was spilt by the Lugglds, I would like you to cut down some of the fiends and bring proof of their demise. Use whatever means necessary. Grant them no quarter and expect none in return. For each of their dark hearts I will trade pieces of the ice that you seem so interested in. I will accept nothing else."

Ok, swim away from the mermaid with IVU still on and get to the beach and along the right rock wall (SE basically). Stop before you get too close to the beach and put regular invis on. Now run up along the wall and to wherever you are going to fight Luggalds. Don't forget to change your spells and EB item back.

(Personally, I had many things on me from trying to figure out what went into the sack and had a heart so I turned it in. I say, go get your first heart before finding the mermaid.)

6. Luggalds drop the heart. I believe any Luggald has a chance to drop them. I've heard that the 4 Luggalds in the fort of the evil town drops them. I've heard that they drop in Dulak Harbor and I got most of mine in the Crypt of Nadox. Kill any kind of Luggald. Get a good group to keep the killing constant. I got 4 in 4 hours once I figured out where to go. Here is the problem. Not only are they nodrop but they are lore. You have to get one and take it to the mermaid and go back to your group, who (if you are lucky) managed to get another to drop while you were away. Another wizzy and I took turns running back and forth in our group. I want to say a quick thank you to Osma and group for the rezzes and KEIs and buffs perfomed on my group on Cazic-Thule server and for the many hearts they threw our way as well.

7. When you take the heart back and hand it to the mermaid, (I gated to the lighthouse, put my EB item on, memmed IVU, Invis and gate, and went to the mermaid with IVU on and gave her the heart.

Aliaka Songscale clenches her jaw as she wrenches a glimmering obsidian shard from between her scales. "As promised, here is what you desired. What I wouldn't give to have them taste their own bitter magic."

You receive: Fragment of Dark Ice

Swim out to where you are fighting as described above.

8. On your 4th fragment, put them all in the pouch and combine it and you get a sealed pouch. Gate to the lighthouse. Go to Lairyn Debeian and had him the closed pouch.

Lairyn Debeian says, "You did it. I can scarely believe my eyes! This is wonderful. Let me have a closer look." Lairyn unbuckles the leather satchel and pours out the contents then begins arranging the shards in a pattern on the ground. He slides them around like pieces of a complex puzzle, swapping them backwards and forwards faster than your eyes can track. "Ah yes, very clever. I am beginning to understand. This is not such a challenge after all, once you know the trick. Enough talk, I would like you to be the first to try it!" Lairyn withdraws his journal again and flips through it until he locates a blank page. He scribbles furiously with a quill for several moments, then tears the page form the binding and hands it to you.

You receive your level 52 Frozen Harpoon spell. Congratulations!

I was soooo happy when I got mine.
