You say, 'Hail, Gaudric Stormwynd'

Gaudric Stormwynd says 'Greeting. What brings you to this forsaken rock? I have been sent here by the council of Surefall Glade to gather information about this Island. This place seethes with anger and hatred, and even the familiar [winds] of Karana blow with a cold bite. So far the creatures have all proved very hostile, even to a follow of Karana. I suspect that the curse of Innoruuk has caused them be very aggressive towards all outsiders. I have been able to gather some information on a new race of [insect] though'

You say, 'What insects?'

Gaudric Stormwynd says 'A strange group of ant like creatures that I've named Nifiliks seems to be native to the island. I've never encountered creatures quite like this. They seem to have a sort of Hive consciousness. They have a vast range in size. The smallest are barely an inch or two across, while the largest can be upwards of four feet tall. The larger ones seem to be able to control the smaller ones by some sort of audible communication. I've heard the strange noises they make, but have yet to [mimic] them.'

You say, 'Why do you want to mimic them?'

Gaudric Stormwynd says 'The smallest ones do not seem to have as developed of a nervous system as the larger ones. They only act on the instincts and the commands of their masters. If we're able to mimic the sounds that they make, we may be able to control the smaller ones. If you're able to capture one of them alive and allow me to listen to its sounds I may be able to mimic them. You'll also need to bring me one of the smaller ones so I can observe its reactions.'

Now go kill "A Broken Skull Nifilik", which spawns on the shore directly South of Gaudric. You will need one A tiny Nifilik and one A captured Nifilik. They are fairly common drops.

Return to Gaudric with the Nifiliks.

You gain experience!!

Gaudric Stormwynd takes the small nifilik and places it on the ground at his feet. He then partially unties the larger one causing it to let out some sort of high-pitched wailing. The small niflik on the table immediately begins to run across the ground toward you. You try to jump away but the nifilik still manages to latch onto your boot and crawl up under your armor. You howl in pain as the tiny creature bites repeatedly at your skin. Gaudric rebinds the larger nifilik and it stops wailing. The tiny creature below your armor stops biting at your skin.

Gaudric Stormwynd begins to scrawl several runes on a parchment and then hands it to you. 'I believe I've worked it out now. Unfortunately, our voices won't be able to make the sounds necessary to control these creatures, but with the help of Karana's magic you'll be able to imitate the sounds enough to control the small creatures. Use their power wisely, Ninlawen. As you know their bite is quite painful.

Your reward is the spell Swarm of Pain.

# Mar 26 2010 at 12:44 AM Rating: Decent
After a hour and a half of killing everything on the beach I decided to call it a night. In the hour and a half I was on the beach I managed to get 6 Nifiliks to spawn.4 were DB to my level 40 ranger and other 2 were lb. Going to try again tommorow. I only managed to get a tiny one.

I just did this for my young ranger. Just kill everything from the middle of the beach to the right wall, if facing away from the water. I had them spawn in undead spots and living insects/crew spots. Took about 2 hours to get both parts. It seems once you clear a couple of times, the nifilick spawn in greater numbers. I went for 1 in the 1st clear, to 5 in the last. Bit of a pain for a level 44 spell.

also found out that the Out cast Survivor's can also be spawning spots for these insects.
More than 1 spawn spot

OK i figured out that by killing all of the "insects" around the shore area.. and back along the East wall all the way back... these mobs can spawn at any of those spots. got my Captured from a spawn at very back of beach

After 3 days of gaming, around 15 hours, I have only one component of the quest.

The 'a captured nifilik' in the bag. Got another one day.

I have yet to see the 'a tiny nifilik'.

Lots of Nifilik Bile. I have killed about 20 or so of 'A Broken Skull Niflik'.

Well, first nifilik dropped captured.
Died a few times, joined a group to do a bit of hunting (they were already there - rezed me), served as pull/tank to a couple clerics and a druid, which was cool. Although they stayed away from the beaches, it was fun anyway.
Went back after they left and second one dropped a tiny. :)
Just had to be careful and fight one beastie at a time.

If the spell you get in reward for this Quest is rated for a level 40 Ranger then why rated for a level 45 Ranger. That Seems a little strange to get a spell that you should be able to use at level 40 but need to be lvl 45 to get it

One character might need to be level 45 to complete this on their own, but a couple (or a few) characters could likely complete this at level 40, which is the level for the spell.

Creatures to hunt, obviously, are "a Broken Skull nifilik" and
the items needed are "A captured Nifilik" (pouch icon)
and "A tiny Nifilik" (bat fur icon).

No luck getting these my first time, next time
they dropped from the first two nifiliks I pulled.

Got a captured niflik on the 4th niflik I killed, another captured on the 7th one, and the 12th one dropped both a captured AND a tiny. Took about 60-75 mins total, but I was using a 70 mage and was able to keep the entire beach clear with time to spare. Niflik seemed no more rare than any other type of mob that pops there. Also got two nameds to pop in that time.
Be prepared to spend along time here

This quest can be a pain in the rear end. Luckly I had enough friends to make nearly a full group, but yet the tiny refused to drop from it. After giving up after nearly a week of camping the beach, a lvl 70 Ranger popped across and got it for me...Thanks to an MQ.

Prepare for adds, but with a good group you can deal with them. Nice XP, nice loot and a lovely DoT.

Just be prepared.
bad luck better than no luck?

I soloed on the beach for a half hour as a 43 Ranger with no luck on the drops. Then I hooked up with a Cleric / SK 2 boxer and we cleared huge sections of the beach for an hour. Barely 5 Nifliks popped the whole time. Uncommon drop on a rare spawn is all I can say :-(
I camped there so tomorrow is another day...
3 to 4 hours on average
# Aug 18 2005 at 12:16 AM Rating: Decent
I have completed this quest on several different toons and help a few others. 1 time I was able to get them within about 1 hour and got them both off 1 drop. the rest of the time, it has taken 3-4 hours and had to clear the beach 2-4 times to get both drops.
Common Drop?
# Feb 07 2005 at 4:09 AM Rating: Decent
I have hunted Broken Skull Nifiliks for 4 nights now and have killed everyone one the beach twice each night and have only received 1 tiny Nifilik about 20 babrs and about 10 biles. I have yet to even come close to looting a captured one.
Oh wel maybe day 5 will get me what I am looing for>

Still a good little quest.

I decide to try this quest as a brand new lvl 42 Ranger, Half Elf, even though it states a minimum level of 45 for some reason. I like to do quests at a time when doing so I get experience for the kills. Anyway I just got my lvl 42 in the Eastern Waist working on the Prayer Shaw quests but was having trouble with the Snow Griffins so I decided to give the “Swarm of Pain” spell quest a try. I figured I’m only 2 levels away so I might as well get started.

Since I was only level 42, and 99% of the MOBs were dark blue, I was not selective about killing just the Nifilik’s and I killed anything I came across. On my 6th Nifilik kill I got the Captured Nifilik. On my 11th Nifilik kill I got the Captured Nifilik and the Tiny Nifilik, Whoo……Hooooo! I was just over 2 yellows into my lvl 42 and had killed 29 MOBs at this point. I ran back and completed the quest and was surprised to get about 2 blue bubbles of experience pushing me to the midway point to my lvl 43.

This is not the best place for Ranger to hunt as the bow was pretty useless but the experience was great. I figured since the experience is so good and the “Outcast Survivors” drop about 5pp every time I will keep hunting here until I get to level 44 and can use the spell then I will go back to EW to work on the Prayer Shaw quests again.

By the time I got my level 43, about 57 Mob’s kill and 11 of them Nifilik’s, I had 3 Captured Nifilik’s and two Tiny Nifilik’s so yes I did the quest twice and got the spell and experience both times they were turned but he would not talk to me the second time. As long as no one in the zone says they need the parts when I do an OOC then I will loot them and turn them in just for the experience. The spell is No Drop so I just destroyed the extra one.

Not bad

While it did take me a while to complete this quest at level 45 with my Ranger, it was refreshing to at LEAST get a little bit of experience when doing a quest.

Most quests are quite the opposite. I camped the beach for about 3.5 hours. I cleared every non-dead spawn point. All light and DB to me. I got about 2 yellow of reg exp and a spell and about 110p in loot total.

Not bad and it's a decent spell for the level.
Rare Drop?

If anyone is still doing this quested item. I went in with 45 Ranger...snuck (Camo) around the beach and killed three Nifilik's. First one dropped the "Tiny" third one dropped the "Captured". It was dangerous and i'm not sure if my casting Harmony, before pulling, helped but i was not attacked by anything else...no root just snare. Drop was on both the Dk blue and on the lt blue's as well. Turn into NPC at lighthouse. Very easy to do. DOT isn't too bad either better than stinging swarm. GL.
These are not common drops.
# Sep 17 2004 at 2:15 PM Rating: Decent
I dont know how all you people got them but Ive been at the beach for about 5 hours and the only thing that dropped was the the tiny one. This is not a common drop. Exp is good though so I figure I ll get to 44 and come back another day.
nothing happened

I just did this quest earlier today with my 51 ranger. Saw that I didn't have it and the mobs were pretty low comparatively so i figured - why not? Plus its better than Immolate and they stack. I zoned in from PoK, ran to the shore and killed one, it dropped the tiny nifilik, then i killed another "a Broken Skull Nifilik" and the capture nifilik dropped, handed into Gaudric and got the spell. Took roughly 5 mins, hope you all have the same luck. Oh and they green at 51, if you do it at 44, maybe light blue, but would still be pretty easy to kill.
why such a high level?
# Jul 29 2004 at 7:31 PM Rating: Decent
I'm leveling there at 33, did quest before i saw it here. Don't have to be that high of a level at all =]

Can solo these mobs at 35 with good equipment. Solo at 40 with decent equipment.

Use Harmony to pull and snare! They run at 20%.

FYI, I had both items drop off one mob. That was nice.

Another FYI, you don't exp for doing this quest so no reason to collect items more than once.

I took a couple of friends and we killed on the beach for about an hour yesterday (although it seemed way longer). I got the captured almost right away, and then got both items from the same kill at the end. I hope this good luck continues for others, don't be discouraged, it's a good spell for the effort required. Good hunting!

At 51 - I am able to solo the Broken Skull Nifliks. Most are green with an occasional light blue. Standard agro range. My usual procedure of snare, root, dots, and repeat works very well. The Nifliks seems to break root sooner than most mobs so root every time dots wear off before re-dot. Obtain C3 (KEI) buff spell from a friendly enchanter to reduce medding down time. I looted both items in under an hour. Now I dot for 67 hits every 6 seconds using Immolate, Stinging Swarm, and Swarm of Pain. All stack and it really makes short work of soloing doggies in Karnors.
The nifliks

I dont care if anyone believes me, and those that do will probably be mad at me... but I just finished the quest about 20 mins ago. I had to kill 2 Broken Skull Nifliks.

The first one dropped the tiny niflik, and the second dropped the captured. Just goes to show that sometimes you can get lucky.

Good luck to everyone else.
Drp rate as of today
# Dec 09 2003 at 8:46 AM Rating: Decent
Got both parts last night. Took about 3 1/2 hours of steady killing. My first kill got me level 44 and by the time the last one dropped I was at 1 blue from 45. I think the drop rate has improved. I continued to kill mobs in the area after getting the last piece and saw a couple more drop. No other rangers in the area so I had to let them rot. Most unfortunate.
