You say, 'Hail, Gaudric Stormwynd'

Gaudric Stormwynd says 'Greeting. What brings you to this forsaken rock? I have been sent here by the council of Surefall Glade to gather information about this Island. This place seethes with anger and hatred, and even the familiar [winds] of Karana blow with a cold bite. So far the creatures have all proved very hostile, even to a follow of Karana. I suspect that the curse of Innoruuk has caused them be very aggressive towards all outsiders. I have been able to gather some information on a new race of [insect] though'

You say, 'What insects?'

Gaudric Stormwynd says 'A strange group of ant like creatures that I've named Nifiliks seems to be native to the island. I've never encountered creatures quite like this. They seem to have a sort of Hive consciousness. They have a vast range in size. The smallest are barely an inch or two across, while the largest can be upwards of four feet tall. The larger ones seem to be able to control the smaller ones by some sort of audible communication. I've heard the strange noises they make, but have yet to [mimic] them.'

You say, 'Why do you want to mimic them?'

Gaudric Stormwynd says 'The smallest ones do not seem to have as developed of a nervous system as the larger ones. They only act on the instincts and the commands of their masters. If we're able to mimic the sounds that they make, we may be able to control the smaller ones. If you're able to capture one of them alive and allow me to listen to its sounds I may be able to mimic them. You'll also need to bring me one of the smaller ones so I can observe its reactions.'

Now go kill "A Broken Skull Nifilik", which spawns on the shore directly South of Gaudric. You will need one ‘A tiny Nifilik’ and one ‘A captured Nifilik’. They are fairly common drops.

Return to Gaudric with the Nifiliks.

You gain experience!!

Gaudric Stormwynd takes the small nifilik and places it on the ground at his feet. He then partially unties the larger one causing it to let out some sort of high-pitched wailing. The small niflik on the table immediately begins to run across the ground toward you. You try to jump away but the nifilik still manages to latch onto your boot and crawl up under your armor. You howl in pain as the tiny creature bites repeatedly at your skin. Gaudric rebinds the larger nifilik and it stops wailing. The tiny creature below your armor stops biting at your skin.

Gaudric Stormwynd begins to scrawl several runes on a parchment and then hands it to you. 'I believe I've worked it out now. Unfortunately, our voices won't be able to make the sounds necessary to control these creatures, but with the help of Karana's magic you'll be able to imitate the sounds enough to control the small creatures. Use their power wisely, Ninlawen. As you know their bite is quite painful.

Your reward is the spell Swarm of Pain.

After 3 days of gaming, around 15 hours, I have only one component of the quest.

The 'a captured nifilik' in the bag. Got another one day.

I have yet to see the 'a tiny nifilik'.

Lots of Nifilik Bile. I have killed about 20 or so of 'A Broken Skull Niflik'.

Well, first nifilik dropped captured.
Died a few times, joined a group to do a bit of hunting (they were already there - rezed me), served as pull/tank to a couple clerics and a druid, which was cool. Although they stayed away from the beaches, it was fun anyway.
Went back after they left and second one dropped a tiny. :)
Just had to be careful and fight one beastie at a time.

Creatures to hunt, obviously, are "a Broken Skull nifilik" and
the items needed are "A captured Nifilik" (pouch icon)
and "A tiny Nifilik" (bat fur icon).

No luck getting these my first time, next time
they dropped from the first two nifiliks I pulled.

Got a captured niflik on the 4th niflik I killed, another captured on the 7th one, and the 12th one dropped both a captured AND a tiny. Took about 60-75 mins total, but I was using a 70 mage and was able to keep the entire beach clear with time to spare. Niflik seemed no more rare than any other type of mob that pops there. Also got two nameds to pop in that time.

This quest can be a pain in the rear end. Luckly I had enough friends to make nearly a full group, but yet the tiny refused to drop from it. After giving up after nearly a week of camping the beach, a lvl 70 Ranger popped across and got it for me...Thanks to an MQ.

Prepare for adds, but with a good group you can deal with them. Nice XP, nice loot and a lovely DoT.

Just be prepared.

I decide to try this quest as a brand new lvl 42 Ranger, Half Elf, even though it states a minimum level of 45 for some reason. I like to do quests at a time when doing so I get experience for the kills. Anyway I just got my lvl 42 in the Eastern Waist working on the Prayer Shaw quests but was having trouble with the Snow Griffins so I decided to give the “Swarm of Pain” spell quest a try. I figured I’m only 2 levels away so I might as well get started.

Since I was only level 42, and 99% of the MOBs were dark blue, I was not selective about killing just the Nifilik’s and I killed anything I came across. On my 6th Nifilik kill I got the Captured Nifilik. On my 11th Nifilik kill I got the Captured Nifilik and the Tiny Nifilik, Whoo……Hooooo! I was just over 2 yellows into my lvl 42 and had killed 29 MOBs at this point. I ran back and completed the quest and was surprised to get about 2 blue bubbles of experience pushing me to the midway point to my lvl 43.

This is not the best place for Ranger to hunt as the bow was pretty useless but the experience was great. I figured since the experience is so good and the “Outcast Survivors” drop about 5pp every time I will keep hunting here until I get to level 44 and can use the spell then I will go back to EW to work on the Prayer Shaw quests again.

By the time I got my level 43, about 57 Mob’s kill and 11 of them Nifilik’s, I had 3 Captured Nifilik’s and two Tiny Nifilik’s so yes I did the quest twice and got the spell and experience both times they were turned but he would not talk to me the second time. As long as no one in the zone says they need the parts when I do an OOC then I will loot them and turn them in just for the experience. The spell is No Drop so I just destroyed the extra one.

While it did take me a while to complete this quest at level 45 with my Ranger, it was refreshing to at LEAST get a little bit of experience when doing a quest.

Most quests are quite the opposite. I camped the beach for about 3.5 hours. I cleared every non-dead spawn point. All light and DB to me. I got about 2 yellow of reg exp and a spell and about 110p in loot total.

Not bad and it's a decent spell for the level.

Drop was on both the Dk blue and on the lt blue's as well. Turn into NPC at lighthouse. Very easy to do. DOT isn't too bad either better than stinging swarm. GL.

I just did this quest earlier today with my 51 ranger. Saw that I didn't have it and the mobs were pretty low comparatively so i figured - why not? Plus its better than Immolate and they stack. I zoned in from PoK, ran to the shore and killed one, it dropped the tiny nifilik, then i killed another "a Broken Skull Nifilik" and the capture nifilik dropped, handed into Gaudric and got the spell. Took roughly 5 mins, hope you all have the same luck. Oh and they green at 51, if you do it at 44, maybe light blue, but would still be pretty easy to kill.

Use Harmony to pull and snare! They run at 20%.

FYI, I had both items drop off one mob. That was nice.

Another FYI, you don't exp for doing this quest so no reason to collect items more than once.

I hope this good luck continues for others, don't be discouraged, it's a good spell for the effort required. Good hunting!

At 51 - I am able to solo the Broken Skull Nifliks. Most are green with an occasional light blue. Standard agro range. My usual procedure of snare, root, dots, and repeat works very well. The Nifliks seems to break root sooner than most mobs so root every time dots wear off before re-dot. Obtain C3 (KEI) buff spell from a friendly enchanter to reduce medding down time. I looted both items in under an hour. Now I dot for 67 hits every 6 seconds using Immolate, Stinging Swarm, and Swarm of Pain. All stack and it really makes short work of soloing doggies in Karnors.

Just a note of warning to any non-Ranger looking to do this quest for the XP. (I know that the quest reward is a Ranger-only spell scroll and that it is NODROP; this warning is for folks who might try to do the quest for XP.)

My Beastlord partner (then 41) and I (then 43) worked the west side of the beach. We cleared the wreck on the shoreline, the first spawn near the wall and a couple farther south also near the wall. It appears that all the non-undead spawn points can potentially spawn Nifiliks.

I got the drops I needed fairly quickly, and my partner did too. I did my turn-in and gained about about 1.5 blues of experience. Made 44 here and scribed my new spell. A very nice upgrade to stinging swarm it is, too.

My Beastlord friend tried to do the turn-in for the XP. He hailed the quest giver, who responded with a totally different message than he had given to me. Basically told the Beastlord to leave him alone. My friend tried to do the turn-in anyway, and the NPC ate both items without an additional word.

So if you're thinking of trying this quest and you're not a Ranger, I would try hailing the quest giver first to see if he will give you the quest dialog. If not, it probably isn't worth your time to try.

The drop rates must have been increased because I got both drops after the 10th dead Nifilik. Did it at lvl 40 so I'd have the spell with me when I turned 44 and it wasnt' that hard. Although I did die several times, I refined my strategy to camping either on the far west side of the beach or the far east side, near the water on both sides. Just keep killing mobs until the little devils pop. Every once in a while I'd levitate my a$$ over to the other side of the beach to see if I was missing out on anything. The undead here are good xp if you're soloing and decent $ drops also. Everything on the beach was DB to me at 40. And to top it off, I got 1 and 1/2 yellow bubs xp when I turned in the Nifilik drops! All in all a great quest for the reward.

I got a Tiny on the 1st day of LoY and then nothing for like 2 weeks of trying. I stopped trying specifically for that drop because I wanted to get through the tunnels to Dulak and group.....no time to stop for possibly futile exercise. Then, on a day when I was blessed with c3 IN Dulak, and my group was leaving, I went Camo down to the beach. The nearby spawn to the lighthouse was a Nifilik, killed it and no luck. I stopped there and Tracked all the Nifs on the beach and here's how I cleared the beach of them without dying.
Camo at the beach, go to the nearest Nifilik, and check your spacing between him and the other mobs. If he is alone, get ready to whack him, but first find a spot juuuust out of his reach where you can root him in place and move to without his neighbors noticing to heal. If he is near another mob, Snare-Pull him to a spot like the kill/heal spot described above. Not one time did another mob agro the snare/pull move. I killed all 7 or 8 available and as listed below, the drop rate had been drastically raised. I had my Tiny in the bank and left the beach with with another Tiny and 2 Captured. I did that in the hopes that the Spell Scroll would NOT be NoDrop[sorry Tierash, it was]. Going from 1 Nif to another, you obviously have to Camo again but this should work for you with no group, and possibly, no c3. I'll mention last that I was Level 47 when I did this cause Camo, Snare, and Root are all low level spells. They were dark blue and I think only two made me back-off to heal during the fight.
Finally, doing this niiice lil quest got me more into DoTs. It's nice with new patch to see in the middle of kitin or melee:13hp non-melee, 24hp non-melee, 30hp non-melee, due to Stinging Swarm, Swarm of Pain and Immolate[lvl49]. Makes my solo day go faster and my c3 well worth it. Good luck with this my fellow Rangers.....Peace and Love.....

Went on last night, cleared beach, then nifiliks popped everywhere, and there were 3 captured and 2 nifiliks on 7 mobs. Shouted to zone for other rangers to come and loot ones I didn't need, but no one was around to take advantage of the drops. Some more dropped a little while later while helping some lower lvl friends get XP, so it does seem that the drop rates have been increased. Good luck fellow rangers.

Made 45 2 nights ago and was too anxious to get this so did not wait long to try and get C3(yesss Ceee Threee), having had to make do without for 3 levels since the patch nerfed it <45. These guys are not extremely tough, but can do some damage causing med/heal delays. Without a group, or at least a partner with you, it could be pretty slow going. Asked those in the vicinity if they would PST if they found a 'tiny' or a 'captured' on any of the bodies. I was there for about 2 hrs and only killed about 6 Broken Skulls due an unfortunate add situation which caused me to zone and med for quite a while. Got a 'tiny' gift from another PC and one off a kill of my own, but no 'captured' in the whole time despite periodic reminders.

I like that this is pretty straightforward as far as what you have to do and having the Quest NPC in the same zone is good too, even though you really only need to do this once. My recommendation is to get your crack hit first if you are thinking of doing this solo cause there will be a lot more running around rooting and shooting if you can't nuke them repeatedly. The MOBs on the beach don't move, but there are lots all around so choosing the correct path through them is essential if there are not enough others killing them off.

I did the quest in approx. 7 hours. The nifliks will pop alot on the west side of the beach. Killing everything that was not undead with viewing of the water kept up a fair number of Nif's. Killed approx. 65 before I got both parts. Good money on the undead if ya want to keep the killing up.
Luck?

Items are more difficult to obtain than I thought! Been campin the beach for over 15 hours (over many days) and killed a lot of Broken Skull Nifliks (although seem to only be 3 - 4 at a time on the beach - kill them and wait for respawn - LOL). Try to avoid other Mobs while tracking, or at least minimize additional pulls. Good news is mobs don't move much on beach, so you can camp and regen health and manna pretty easy. Got Captured Niflik within first 5 - 6 kills, been hunting Tiny Niflik for days - no luck yet. Even offered plat to others on beach if they found on corpse - had one group find another "Captured", but no tinys yet! Can't wait to get spell. Lvl 43 Ranger with 1 small yellow tick till 44 - Hoped to have spell right off!

Good quest though - doable (I hope - seem should be - LOL) without spending months or finding 10 people to tag along...

I got my spell yesterday after 3 days of killing every A Broken Skull Nikilik. The "a tiny nifilik" looks like a bat fur, and the "a captured Nifilik" looks likes a pouch. I turned both in and got the spell.

I guess you have to be lucky to get this on the first few tries. If your not lucky like I am you will be camping a few days. The 3 days I was there I was the only ranger in the zone except for the other guildie ranger that was with me. I was unble to capture the spawn times, and it seems that hailing Gaudric does not spawn them any faster.

Hope this helps and if anyone has a question on the 7th, gimme a /tell and i will definatly help out as best I can.

When you first get to Gunthak, walk the dock from the ship to the lighthouse. Follow it around like you're gonna go in the lighthouse but go to the first little "shed" next to the lighthouse instead. You'll find Gaudric in there.

Remember to trigger the spawns! Like many of the other zones having quests, we just tend to camp the spawns then hoping to quickly get them items. Get tired log off, next day, log back on, more of the same camping; Just remember to retrigger! AND HAVE FUN.

Namdaruluclin...I'd like to see your data on this. I spent a day, three boxing in the zone with one character hailing Gaudric Stormwynd and the other two clearing Nifiliks. HAILing did NO GOOD. As of now, they appear to be a random spawn.

Also, there is the perception that 'a Tiny Nifilik' and 'a Captured Nifilik' are common drops. Again, after 10 hours in the zone, I received 3 'a Tiny Nifilik' and 0 'a Captrued Nifilik'.

While in the zone, I kept doing /ooc to ask if anyone else was camping or getting these things. Only one person in 10 hours responded that they had seen either of these things.

What exactly do you mean by trigger? Do you mean killing everything in the area to spawn more mobs, increasing the chances of getting a nifilik, or something else?

When you get a task from npc, "but Dulak npc give tid-bits no Alt-Q task assignments", so trigger spawns wont work, darn, back to killing everthing in the zone hoping for that elusive drop to complete my spell book. So the developers have no way of trigger. Things just happen stance.

I to had all the expansions, but when tried to get into zone couldn,t. I found thet when your patcher screen come up when you log on, you need to click on "advanced" button and make sure all your expansion buttons are checked, then update files. i was missing some files that let me into zone. now working fine.

Get a port to Stonebrunt, find the coast. There is a ship there. Click on the door. It takes you to gunthak.

Took me three days of off and on fighting to get both -- ironically, when I finally got the tiny nifilik, the same corpse had a captured nifilik on it, but by then I already had a captured nifilik and had seen three others drop.

I think what may be happening is that they go through cycles of captureds and tinys -- that and other people are finding what you need and vice versa.

As for needing only one component, I agree with Caidykat: this quest can be MQ and some may have given only one part with the hope of lucking up and completing a previously started MQ.

It was a very frustrating three days. Stupid undead saw through invis (of course) usually near a scorpion or one of the scavengers. A lot of casting interruptions and junk. THEN there's the huge mosquitos . . .

Hang in there. Completion of the quest gave me roughly half a blue (I had my AA set to 50%)

I am a 55 Ranger and just completed this quest.

I guess I got lucky as I got both items from only 4 Nifiliks. They all spawned in the same place on right hand side of the beach as you face it, right by a big rock. You can wait safely against the wall further up the beach.

I handed in both items and got the scroll and the captive niflik back, with the message 'I dont need that item'. I would say reading other posts that this quest currently allows the scroll to be gained from tiny nifilik only.

I have now killed around 40 nifiliks and only two of the "a captured nifilik" have dropped, but none of the "a tiny nifilik". This is over the course of about 3 days, beginning late on day two of the LoY expansion. Good luck to anyone doing it. My guildmate, Hulrar, got both in about an hour, however. #@&*%$!! ;)

I have been killing Nifiliks (and the mobs that spawn where I have seen the Nif's spawn) for about two days now. I have two "a tiny nifilik" but have yet to see "a captured nifilik" I have looted a few "nifilik bile" and "nifilik barbs"

I am on Lanys and have personally killed at least 40 of these d@mn bugs. I am about to go back to leveling without the spell.

This spell can be MQ. That is why you got the spell only turning in one item, someone else had turned in the other previously.
