Sage Balic may be found at the top of the tower in the neutral section of town at /location -15, 60.

    You say, 'Hail, Sage Balic'

Sage Balic says 'Greetings friend. Welcome to my place of private contemplation. I relax here and leaf through my old studies, admiring at creations from the past made by races we thought would never amount to anything. My favorite tomes to look at are those that deal with Frogloks.'

    You say, 'What frogloks?'

Sage Balic says 'A surprising race to study is the Frogloks of Antonica. While we may think their magic was weak, it was at one time so powerful the Gods reached down and smote them for their creations. Balls of energy that made life into magic! Their High Enchanter even made a mask that transformed the wearer into a Teir`Dal! Quite an interesting race worthy of some study if you ask me, someday I shall like to go and see these frogloks, especially to learn more knowledge of the magical mask.'

    You say, 'What magical mask?'

Sage Balic blinks and looks at you. 'I have told you all that I know, for more knowledge you will need to seek its creator. The enchanter is more than likely very old, the mask having been made at the height of the power of the Froglok race. Here take this picture book to aid you in your quest.'

Sage Balic hands you a Picturebook.

In Upper Guk, find an old froglok (location 1280, +220, -94; PH is a froglok ton shaman but does not need to be killed as it will despawn in place of the old froglok).

You must have at least 'warmly' faction (750) with Frogloks of Guk in order to get a response out of it. (Note: undead frogloks in Old Sebilis give +25 faction per hit, so may be among the best kill targets for faction increases.)

You say, 'Hail, an old froglok'

    an old froglok says 'Frroooaaaaaakkkk!'

    Give him the Picturebook.

an old froglok backflips and says, 'Frroooaaaaaakkkk! I'm in this book! You see me! Owww that flip hurt my old bones! Frroooaaaaaakkkk! Look there is a picture of my maaask from long ago! Frroooaaaaaakkkk! I keep book! You taaake this recipe! Maaaybe more! I'm in book! Frroooaaaaaakkkk!'

Your faction standing with Frogloks of Guk has been adjusted by 1.

You receive an Elf Essence Recipe, which reads:

Grind up the parts of both the elves of dark and the elves of light, of which descended from the same tree. A source of celestial liquid as the base and the fungus from this scroll shall cause a reaction that will decant the pure essence.

You say, 'What about the mask?'

an old froglok says, 'Frroooaaaaaakkkk! Speciaaal maaask I maaake for sneaky types! Lost long ago! Baaad frogs taaake! I too old to maaake more! Frroooaaaaaakkkk! Maaagic aaalmost used up! So cold! You help me! I help you!'

You say, 'I will help you.'

an old froglok says, 'Frroooaaaaaakkkk! So cold! You bring me waaarm velium mastodon fur cloaaak! I need supplies! You bring me maaana juice! You bring me elf essence! You bring me sturdy froglock crown those naaasty big frogs stole! Frroooaaaaaakkkk! I maaake you something nice! So cold! You bring me all those things, don't forget cloaaak!'

    The Froglok needs four things:

    Elf Essence (crafted via baking)

Reet Froglok Crown (drops in Old Sebilis from "reet" mobs in the juggernaut tunnels)

Vial of Purified Mana (summoned by an enchanter via Purify Mana or Mass Purify Mana or crafted via research)

Velium Mastodon Fur Cloak (crafted via tailoring)

Hand all 4 items to the old froglok.

an old froglok says 'Frroooaaaaaakkkk!!! This cloaaak so waaarm! Here let me work! Frroooaaaaaakkkk!' The old froglok goes to work on the crown and after uttering a few froaks, a small cloud of smoke rises from the crown. You reach over and pick it up. 'Frroooaaaaaakkkk! Maaagic haaat! Taaake good care of it aaand staay away from baaad frogs! Frroooaaaaaakkkk!'

You receive the Crown of Deceit.

I am a Agnostic Halfling Rogue and I factioned to Amiable and when I got the Feral Pack illusion, I conned Kindly. So some of these posts are wrong about Amiable to warmly...all of that is strictly dependant on dieties and race and such...need to post that.

The druid spell Feral Pack is needed to get wolf form. Unfortunately, you have to find a druid that purchased this spell from LDON. As an ogre worshipping Rallos Zek, I factioned my way up to indifferent, got Feral Pack and that got me to warmly. I was able to get the quest at this point. I had the ghoul lord scalp, but I didn't have to equip it. It may seemed to me to be that
Indiff + Feral Pack = Warmly

The reason it's misleading is because it is based on a misconception. Wolf form does not in and of itself raise faction with the frogloks, it merely removes any negative racial faction you may have with them.

For example (all numbers are abitrary, used for demonstration purposes):

Ogres start with -200 froglok faction (scowling), but An_Ogre_01 raises his faction to indifferent by gaining +300 faction. -200 +300 gives him +100 faction. If this ogre uses wolf form, the racial -200 is elminated, so now he has +300 faction, and he's warmly.

Woodelves start with -100 froglok faction (dubious), A_woodelf_02 raises his faction to Indifferent as well.. but only took +200 faction hits to get to +100. He uses wolf form and removes the -100 racial faction and is left with +200, Kindly.

Don't try to sit there and count up the numbers, as I said they are totally arbitrary for demonstration purposes, but hopefully it will show how the "faction adjustment" of wolf form truly works, and why different people will get different results.

    **Edit**

Religion adds its own adjustments as well, which I *believe* are now removed by illusions.. although don't hold me to that.

Racial illusions only affect the NPC's racial attitude, they do not mask your religion or class. That's why the Scalp of the Ghoul Lord exists - to allow evils to compensate for their religious differences with the good frogs when they equip it. Someone who is both evil class and evil religion needs to do both things - use a good race illusion and wear the scalp.

You're right about how racial faction works.

Just finished this quest today,it took me about a week from start to finish (started at kos to upper guk frogs) but was well worth it.And I hope the price of the furs is not as high on your server then on mine(2k-4k each). To the guy who posted the Essence of Gukta trick,it did not work for me.Maybe it was nerfed since you tried it,but I HAD to max out my faction to do this quest.Im maxed at kindly and with scalp Im warmly.

This is my hint to you all, those that have just learned about this fun clickie and want to do this quest. the first thing you will need to get is a reet crown. ***** factions at first, becuase killing froglocs for reets for 15 hours trying to get you and your party reets will get you most the way there. If you do faction in lower guk, and get to warmly, you will be like me, get faction to warmly and then get reet, spend 15 hours total. max kos to trak and i am now ally to upper fogs. get reet. if your unlucky enough you'll be already be warmly by the time you get reet. the rest can be baught in bazaar for a total of 18K, (16K comes from fur cloak) or if you have the TS (taloring) you can do it yourself, just farm for furs.

I managed to loot scalp of Goul Lord, but every thread I read on this quest gives different things to do. Do I need illsion? Can I make faction for quest with out these items?

    # Aug 06 2004 at 3:35 AM Rating: Good
Its really a preference thing and how fast you can kill. Seb has a much much faster respawn and is much easier to just rip through and kill without much downtime waiting for respawn.

Lguk mobs have less hp, but are on about a 30minute spawn timer and I found myself always waiting about 13minutes for respawns. Also, running through left, right, left, right is annoying as heck.

I have factioned two characters and help faction another in both zones. I can honestly say the faction hits are about the same and its really how fast you can kill in the long run. If you are faster than the spawns in Lguk, you should really just head to seb.

I have found, without a doubt, the best place to raise Guk faction, and that is the crypt in Sebillis. To give you an example of how fast you can raise your faction killing frogs in the crypt, I ae'd the entire undead population in Lguk for 2 hrs 1 morning to raise faction from threateningly to dubious. I went to the crypt and killed for about 2 and a half hrs killing maybe 60 or 70 frogs total and my faction jumped to warmly, so if you dont want to take days and days raising your faction spend a few quality hrs in the crypt at sebilis.

bodacious, your information is deceptive. The number of faction hits to get from threateningly to dubious is huge compared to the number of htis it takes to go from dubious to warmly. I'm pretty sure that killing the undead frogs in L Guk is the same exact faction hit as killing the frogs in Sebilis.

Wolf form, increases my faction from Dubious to Indiff, increased faction of the Druid casting it from MAX KoS, to Dubious.

Essenece of Guktan, new froglok illusion, no faction change whatsoever.

Illusion: Froglok, old froglok illusion, no faction change whatsoever.

May be ableto use Puppet strings to charm it, then use Wolf Form to get warmly faction with no faction work, have yet to test this.

[Sat Jul 31 11:53:12 2004] Your Essence of Gukta begins to glow.

as a troll shaman worshiping inny got my faction up to dub, got scalp from lord, got feral pack from pocket druid = good enough faction, took me 4 spawns of the lord to get scalp. Got lucky he spawned 4 times in a row. His timer is around 29minutes. Reets in seb are around 23 - 25mins. Took me 11hours of camping reets with friends to get mine, in the 11 hours 3 crowns droped, 2 within 20mins of eachother.

Seems you can no longer make elf essence in mortar and pestal. is this quest broken now ? placed dark elf parts, and wood elf parts in mortar with one celestial essence, only to get " you cannot combine these ingredients in this container type". Since celestial essence is now made in mixing bowl, i tried that too, but no luck. anyone else petitioned this ?

Need Faction help of a differant sort
    # May 22 2004 at 6:18 AM Rating: Decent
Please help if you can. I was told that in this message thread, someone had posted a way to determine exactly how KOS you are, but I have not been able to find it. Perhaps it is someplace else related to this quest? I AM NOT talking about froglok faction. There is another faction that I have been working on for 5 MONTHS now. But I am still "ready to attack". I am sure that no ammount of illusions of any sort will make me other than KOS, but I need to know if I am a month away from being nonKOS, or a year away, so I can tell weather or not to give up. I read somewhere that faction ranges from a scale of -32000 to +32000. I would estimate that I have had at least 5000 positive faction hits in the last 5 months. If I am only getting 1 point per kill and am at -27000, then I very much want to give up (not wanting to put 2 more years into it), but if I am really at -8000 it would be a shame to give up now and waste those 5 months. I read somewhere that the best faction spell in the game only gives you 400 points, so at -8000 I would still be VERY KOS. I NEEEEEEEEED a way to get at that raw faction number. Please help.
RE: Need Faction help of a differant sort
    # Aug 06 2004 at 3:19 AM Rating: Decent
To my knowledge there is no way to get a number figure on how kos/non-kos you are. Its something like -32000 to 0 is dubious in most cases. From there its much smaller to climb the faction ladder, I think it was around 400 to get apprehensive. Also, very important if you are an evil race with an evil diety,(example DE/Inny) you probably max out at amiable without the aid of faction modifiers. A DE Cleric with Inny diety maxes out at amiable and requires the lords scalp + an illusion to gain higher faction. So in other words, faction will seem very slow because you only have Scowl>Threat>Dubious>Apprehensive>Indiff>Amiable.

First, let me state that I was duoing 2 chars while doing this quest. A 65 Druid and 40 - 56 Beastlord. The crown is for the beastlord. She is an Ogre, and Rallos Zek diety. Started with non-edited faction on the BL.

    Faction in Upper Guk:
I started Power leveling off the undead froggies here. I went from level 45 - 52 off them, as well as earning 12 AA's, which were all earned at 52.

The druid went from Scowl to Apprehensive.
The Beastlord went from Scowl to Warmly.

The druid didn't get every faction hit. But I tried to get him most. The Beastlord got every faction hit. So it will take you quite a while to get the faction. I did attain the Ghoul Lord Scalp but didn't need it in the end.

    Elf Essence:

Wood Elf Parts from the Wood Elf Bandits in Greater Faydark. Dark Elf Parts from Dark elves in Dulak's Harbor. Or just check PoK/Bazaar for both. Celestial Essence is made in a Mortar and Pestle by combining a research item ( Usually The Scent of Marr sold in PoK ) with Celestial Solvent ( Sold in PoK also. )

    Vial of Purified Mana:

Summoned by an enchanter. 4 Rubies, 1 Poison vial required. The summon spells are sold in LFay. Requires wolf form/illusions to get the spell.

    Mastadon Fur Cloak:

The furs drop off mastadons in Western Wastes. They drop more often than Velium Hound Furs, thankfully. The platinum thread is sold in Thurgadin. The vial of mana, look above.

I have two furs at the moment. I'll repost when I have all four and find a tailor ( 250 ) to combine.. and post success/failure.

    Reet Crown:

The only place I have seen reet frogloks are down by the Juggs/Trakanon area in Old Sebilis You can invis, if you are lucky, past the mushroom area and the Juggernaught Hall. The juggs wandering in the cavern area near Trak will see invis though. There are 3 camps of reets here you can kill. I've camped for 8 hours and I have seen no crown yet.

    Thanks Djehuti

I have been working on this quest for months for my alt 63 DE Innoruk cleric and have the skin off Lord, killed tons of frogs and still cant get past kos even with Illusion Gukta. I was about to give up till I saw your post.

However, I am still wondering if all this is worth it? Even with the Illusion Wood Elf, will it allow a dark race to enter light race villages without getting waxed because of race and diety? I've converted my cleric and have been working on light faction in all areas and realize that there are areas he is going to be hated because of faction, but what about those areas that are purely based on race/deity?

Any dark races out there with this item know if you can enter Rivervale, Akanon, Qeynos, Felwithe, etc...?

Rivervale: Hand bandages into the guy in the south east corner of misty thicket. Lots of them.

Ak'Anon: Minotaurs and Meldrath, takes a little while.

Felwithe: This may be for wood elf faction, I forget, but hand in muffins to the dwarf in Hogcaller's Inn in Freeport.

Qeynos: Never tried it, but apparently the Card quest is good for qeynos faction. could also mass-kill gnolls.

Freeport (North): Deathfist Orcs in the Commons. Keep any belts that drop.

Freeport (West & East): Hand in all those belts you picked up from gaining North faction.

Kaladim: Used to be that you could gain guard faction killing the deathfist orcs, but I have a feeling that's been changed. In which case, aqua goblins are probably your best bet.

Halas: If you choose to mass-kill gnolls to gain qeynos faction, collect the fangs. Hand them in to the female warrior guildmaster in the arena in halas. Note that the bank is run by the rogue faction, which remain unraised.

    Gukta: Never tried.

I completed this quest last night and I will tell you going to seb and getting that piece was the easiest part of it all. My faction was max KOS with the live frogs (who the hell ever thought they would have a quest any level 65 would want to do there) and it took several days of killing in both seb and Lguk to fix my faction. As a dark elf SK on Inni faction it would not allow me to hail the old frog until I got the message your faction cant get any better. It did require this, the scalp and a froggie illusion potion to get to warmly and anyone who says it doesnt work is full of it.

I am a lizzy war who just spent 4 days ( a few hours everyday ) in LGuk factoning. I had never hunt in both of the Guk zones previously and I very rarely hunt in Seb in my entire EQ career. This made me KoS to the max towards all the froglok kinds right from the start I assumed.

I maxed my faction towards the Frogloks of Guk yesterday, with the message saying my faction with the Frogloks of Guk can't get any better. Here are a couple of things I noticed..

    1. I con Indifferent to the Old Froglok without the Scalp of the Ghoul Lord nor any illusion.

    2. Once I wear the Scalp, Old Froglok cons Amiably to me.

    Now the interesting part:

I took off the Scalp then take a zip of the Essence of Gukta ( Froglok illusion potion ), Old Froglok now cons Kindly to me.

After that, I put on the Scalp again. Old Froglok cons Warmly.

This means that Froglok illusion does help with faction. Some of the posts said it won't work. And better get a Human illusion. Misleading info.

I will try to get a human illusion and con the Old Frog again and see.

Not sure if this applies to evil races as well as good races, but the old froglok wouldn't even talk to me untill I was warmly with live side frogloks. As a human agnostic monk that spent many hours camping Raster, I had close to bottomed out negitive faction with the live frogloks. Its true that you would need to kill in the area of 5000+ undead frogloks to get up to warmly to do the quest. If you can find people to join you, or if you can get into one of the AoE groups this will help immensely.

The Reet Froglok Crown took some time to get. Killed more then 70+ reet frogloks in Sebilis before one finialy dropped. As far as I can see this crown dropping is purely random. Some people I know got it on the first reet froglok they killed, and others like myself spent many hours before one dropped. All I can say here is keep killing as many reets as you can, a crown is bound to drop.

The rest of the quest was pretty easy enough. I just bought the furs in the bazaar, got the rest of the pieces for the cloak and /auctioned for a bit to find a tailor I can pay to do the combine.

As for the elf essence potion, I simply went to Befallen and killed the dark elf SK on the first floor to get the dark elf parts. For the wood elf parts I went to the elf bandit camp in Gfay. The good part of killing the wood elf bandits is you don't get a negitive faction with any of the elf factions. Although I did get a faction hit against Fizzlethorpe the god of thieves.

One last note, most of the monk only gear doesn't show up on the wood elf illusion. Seems SoE decided to save some space and time by not flagging these pieces to have a clothing look for any graphic models other than human or iksar. Which is understandable, at the time SoE made all these pieces they weren't expecting any races except for iksar or human to wear them. Although if you swap a piece of armour that a wood elf can wear in place of your monk only piece and then put your monk only stuff back on, the leather pattern will stay. I carry around 4 extra pieces of armour, so when I cast the wood elf illusion, I quickly click the leather pieces in and out and I no longer look naked.

Good news is that a new graphic engine for EQ is due for release in the next few months. With any luck the world file will be updated to include clothing textures for people using different illusions.

Same issue with my wizard being a wood elf, robes just don't exist for a wood elf, guess none of the classes they can be were ever expected to wear one

As a paladin, i have been leveling in Lower guk dead side for tonned of levels. I went there at about 43 and left at 51 when the experiance really slowed down. All these levels i was soloing, constantly, for many hours, and have killed hundreds of dead frogs. In all these levels, i went from bottom of KOS to kindly. From 51-55 i got myself in 2 seb groups, and saw that my faction went up with livies of guk. Today, i went to guk to farm, and to my surprise i was Warmly to livies.... I dont know if i was just on the boarder of the 2 factions, or if the seb frogs give uber xp ( i wasnt in seb for more than 4 hrs total) but anyhow, crown here i come.

Ok I am an Ogre I worship RZ and I got my Human Illusion on and my ghoul lord scalp on and I am Indiffrent when I con the frogs without the illusion or scalp on. The Scalp and illusion only take me down to Kindly, Is that the right con or do you need to be amiable? I also don't know where an old froglok is.

Alright, I just finished this quest last night and let me say it was totally worth the time! I am a Ogre Bst that warships CZ. I have read in alot of other posts that evil races can't get to Kindly with the live side of Guk without the scalp or a illusion, that is very wrong! Atm after many many trains I am Kindly to them without a illusion or the scalp. I am pretty sure with enough trains ANY evil race could become Warmly without the scalp or a illusion. Even at kindly I still get the message your faction has got better, not it can't get any better.
