On day 6 of waiting for the Goblin Alchemist, including a 30 hour and counting straight camp, I saw Spinflint. Killed him but sadly he dropped a whirling Lapis, and not the crystal. He does exist. My ranger friend believes he popped in somewhere around Diggs Dugan, so maybe he has a plceholder in that area.

Okay, I have played this game over 2 years now and have hunted the gorge since lvl 5 (I had a friend killing evil eyes until I got the polished bone drops)... and I have never seen this NPC. I've spent hours and hours in there and honestly, didn't know that a mob with this name existed there. Cross off one more quest that I'm not even going to try to accomplish, LOL, gotta love VI/Sony!

Did you ever think that maybe , just maybe , they added this mob in AFTER you had left the zone , to go with this quest .. ?

If you go to the page on Spinflint here in the Bestiary you'll see that there are entries there from early 2001, so he was around long before this quest was added, and at least since the original poster said he'd been playing.
I can't believe that this quest is rated 5.00. I have camped Beholders and have yet to see Spinflint pop. Then not only is he a RARE pop but he drops all kinds of stuff, and the Whirling Crystal is not even listed on his drops so it is probably rare on rare... I am not going to waste any more time on this one except to say that I think the rating needs to change.

Since my last post I have spent more time in Beholders camping evil eyes and gathering the clay and ore that drops off muddites for tradeskills, and I still haven't seen Spinflint on tracking. I've asked every person I see in there, and the few who have seen him saw him a long time ago. I've looked in the Bazaar quite a bit for any whirling stones, and have seen two up for sale. Neither was the Whirling Crystal, and in both cases I eventually got ahold of the seller and they said it dropped off Spinflint awhile ago. I petitioned asking if Spinflint still exists, and the response was that they weren't allowed to give out that type of information.

I ran into him today for the very first time. To give you a sense for how rare that makes him, I have been hunting in there to raise faction in Runnyeye. My faction with the Runnyeye Clan goblins was completely bottomed out when I started, and now it's all the way up to indifferent. My faction with the Pickclaw Goblins is up to warmly. And folks, I'm a halfling druid, so you KNOW I was born KOS to them.
Do you have any idea how many muddites, minotaurs and evil eyes (named and unnamed) I have killed in there to raise that faction that much? It has to number in the thousands spread out over a period of several months and many, many hours of slaughtering everything in the zone except the Goblins. Yeah, Spinflint is rare.
Frankly, unless I just happened to catch him, kill him, and get the whirling crystal as a drop item, I doubt I would seriously bother to pursue this quest even if the cloak was something I wanted. The item you get for completing this quest just isn't good enough to justify the absurd amount of time you'd almost certainly waste trying to find him.

I've spent several hours a day for over two weeks in Beholders and haven't seen Spinflint. I passed the time killing Evil Eyes and any minotaur that was carrying an axe, but never picked Spinflint up on tracking. I saw King Xorbb spawn, I saw Qlei spawn, I saw Lord Soptyvr spawn, but no sign of Spinflint. Even if he had shown up it is a small possibility that he would drop the right crystal. I think Spinflint has been removed from the game to rule him out as a possible source of the Whirling Crystal. It's time to look elsewhere.

I have looked everywhere in PoK for this NPC. Could someone post a loc or other specific location for him. I would like to start this quest but get frustrated looking for hours before I csan even start. Any help would be much appreciated.

Renni Stone is @ 837, 563, on the ground floor.
As I remember, I saw him in the tallest building (the one in the middle of the three that are there) on the "good" side. I believe he's on the ground floor though I'll check again as I'm off now to try my hand at this quest. =)

the whirling crystal comes of spinflint in beholders the pulsating rock comes of bugs in paludal caverns and i know that scarlet stone comes of drolvarg scavengers in fv cuz i already got mine thanks to a wonderful ranger helping me of course i think the drolvarg scavegers are a fairly high lvl because they hit me for 40 - 55 but sofar this quest sn't to har i gonna finish it to day this quest kicks for the lvl and what u need for it , it is better than the manual at lvl 55 well the beginer manuals any way ... boy finally i gonna have somthgn in range slot better than traveler manual!!!

It can get a rare drop off a rare, the idol of woven grass took me 60+ kills of casters in WW to find. My Iksar monk maxxed out his FV faction trying to get an idol for me. The drum used in the musical quest, the one from Luclin, is a drop from a rare named that you have to control the war to get to spawn. I have killed him over 20 times and have yet to see a drum drop. The Tome of the Eternal from Droga is from a uncommon spawn in the room where the boss of the zone spawns. Although its listed as a common drop I did not get one copy after 9 kills of them. 2 books of rings and 2 or 3 Stones of Morid. And the Stone is supposed to be a rare drop.
The floral quest seems to get the easiest all the others have at least one part that is hard to get.

I doubt its a rare drop off a rare spawn or anything, none of the other items seem to be. Lavastorm dervs would be my guess, since it has to be old world.
Did anyone think of looking on the dervish in Iceclad Ocean or Eastern Wastes?

2) Pulsing Stone from the tenth Mud Burrower I killed in Paudal.
3) Only took 4 Walrus (regular walrus not Man'o'war) in the SW corner to get Icy GeoDucks.

So I headed to Beholders. I slaughtered everything in the zone for 3 hours. I found these mobs:
1) Muddite Minor: Drops pieces and blocks of ore and clay... and rarly Muddite Mud. VERY rarly "Heavy Clay".
2) Muddite Elder: Drops Same as Minor.
3) Muddite Tacttician near Runnyeye: Same as Minor, plus lore parchment.
4) Gorge Minotaur/Chasm Minotaur: Coins and occasionally a Mino Axe.
5) Goblin Lookout: coin + random trash loot (cloth armor, ration, short beer, etc.)
6) Goblin Veteran: coin. rusty weapons.
7) Evil Eye: Normal Gems, Evil eye nerves and sack. coin.
8) Lord Skrill: Named evil eye.. same as regular eye + Lord Skrills lens.
9) Splinflint: Actually spawned one time when I was there in 3 hours (which I think was lucky).. Dropped a whirling Lapis Lazule (not a whirling crystal), nothing else.

try lavastorm. seems to indiicate would be frm a rock dirvish type mobs, and only ones common (since all of these are common mobs for all these quests) in old eq are in lavastorm.
Been killing Rock Dervish's in Lavastorm for the last week. No whirling crystal dropped. Also killing the Fire elementals, lava crawlers, and drakes. Likewise, no whirling crystal from them. Also know it does not drop in Ak'anon, been killing there for some time also.

Does anyone know what mob drops the Whirling Crystal in the Beholders Maze? I have killed everything in the maze atleast 5 times and still no drop. Any help would rock. Thanks
Spinflint (http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=3521 ) is a _RARE_ mob in Beholders that drops all sorts of whirling stones (see link). It is likely speculation that he drops the crystal, as that's what I thought of when I heard it, but it's not listed there.
Over many years of playing this game I have only seen this mob once, and if he drops nearly a dozen different items, this could be a huge bottleneck.

Mud Burrowers in Paludal drop the Pulsating rocks Level 10 dropped them easy, think they were dark blue.
scarlet stone is from drolvargs in Firona Vie.
