Go up to the top of Kurn's Tower. Here, a skeletal cook spawns. /loc is 82, 45, 129

Northwest corner of "kitchen" in the top of the tower

You say, 'Hail, a skeletal cook'

a skeletal cook says, 'Some cracked old bones, two zombie flesh, and a salt minnow make up the rest. Throw inside a skull and mix, and I would have a delightful dish. But with no eyes I have no sight to make Kurn's delicious delight. And if I could I would not eat without a tongue behind my teeth.'

The Cook wants you to gather a number of items:

Bone Chips (dropped by skeletons)
Two Zombie Flesh (dropped by Rotting Flesh Hunters in the Field of Bone)
Salt Minnow (fished in Cabilis)
A Preserved Eye (red) (dropped by Crackling Bones, a Stables area spawn in Kurns)
A Preserved Eye (green) (dropped by a burynai flesh reaper, tunnel spawn at +200, -232)
A Dried Tongue (dropped by Undead Tower Guard near the zone in)
Hollow Skull (dropped by Undead Jester, who roams the stables)

The Jester also drops a note related to the quest. It reads:

Within the tower lies the corpse of Mirgon Dower.
A faithful servant of Kurn's deadly tower.
He served Kurn and kept him very well fed.
Now it is time to replace his head.
His new head did glow once upon a time.
Now there are no eyes, no tongue, to taste the sweet crunchy flesh.
And so the years flow.
When all are back together the magic will once again glow.

Inside the Hollow Skull, combine: Bone Chips + Zombie Flesh x2 + Salt Minnow. This yields you a Kurn's Jerky Delight (edible, so make sure not to eat it).

The Hollow Skull is returned to you. Now combine the Kurn's Jerky Delight + Preserved Eyes + Dried Tongue in the same container. This yields you a Glowing Skull (which is TEMPORARY).

Hand the Glowing Skull to the skeletal cook:

The cook's bones crack as he reaches out to take the skull from your hands. A voice in your mind says, 'thank you now I can leave this dreadful place. Please take this as I no longer have any use for it' The cook places the skull back in your hands before collapsing into a lifeless pile of bones.

Receive The Skull of Torture.

Need all dialogues (these are transcriptions), /loc of quest mobs.

I've done this quest countless times and the new pop after the turn in has always been the thick boned skelly. Well, today on TLP Ragefire server I did the turn in, and lo and behold the new pop was...another skeletal cook!! Never seen that before, but apparently it's a thing now.

I just completed this quest. Started off by collecting the needed quest items until I looted a glowing skull off of a greater scalebone. Went to the NW area of the dining room on the fourth floor and killed a "thick boned skeleton" in the corner. Another one spawned exactly 59 minutes later and then another one 57 minutes later. The fourth spawn was the cook. Gave him the skull and I recieved the reward. The cook colapsed upon receipt of the glowing skull. I wanted to wait to see what would happen to the colapsed cook and I did not kill and loot him. After one minute, the colapsed skeleton cook disapeared and a thick boned skeleton appeared in its place. I hope this helps those that are interested in doing this quest.

Getting the Glowing Skull off of a high level skellie and then doing the turn in works. Verified (again) tonite. Went to kitchen. Whacked down a Greater Scalebone, he had the glowing skull, did the turn in (the cook was already up). Got the Skull of Torture (Burning Affliction comes in handy).

Easy way to do this quest
# Oct 13 2004 at 10:24 AM Rating: Decent
No need to go around collecting all the parts for this quest. Just go to the top floor and kill everything in sight (except for the cook) and sooner or later one of the higher level skellies will drop "a glowing skull". Hand this to the cook and he will give you the Skull of Torture.

The cook is in the north west corner of the banquet hall. His Place Holder is the Thick Boned Skeleton. If you kill the PH it will take about 45 minutes for the cook to spawn.

So, today, as the previous post stated, the Rotting Flesh Hunters were introduced. Hell of a Mob...it took my 38 Monk 2 mends (12 minutes) worth of crushing and kicking to take this thing out. It did hit in the 60's, but not that often, it just seemed to have an unbelievable amount of HPs. It helped to Intimidate (fear) it and chase it back and forth in the pit. He ran at 50% health, no particular path, from the pit, to the beach and back toward Cabilis before he finally died. I did this twice to get the 2 zombie fleshes needed, and completely agree, that freakin' thing has taken way too many steroids. For the Salt Minnow (NO DROP fished in Cabilis only) I got some invis potions, ran into town, found a "safe spot" to fish. With a skill of 1, I caught the fish in about 30 minutes...used two invis potions. Yes, you can fish while invis is on. I combined 1 ordinary Bone Chip (on a hunch) 1 Salt Minnow and 2 Zombie Flesh (unstacked) in the Hollow Skull. Voila! I made Kurn's Tasty Jerky (Lore Item, but shows to be stackable?)! Now, all I have to do is return to Kurn's when the servers are back up and turn in the 2 eyes and the tongue along with the Jerky to see what I get. I will post more details when all is finished. I will let you know what happens.

Someone said that the resyult of combing the Kurn's Tasty Jerky and the 2 eyes and tongue result in the glowing skull that has been droppping in kurn's for some time. yes, that is true. I confirmed it today, killed one of the multiple mobs who drop the Glowing Skull and ran up to the Cook. i gave it to him and BAM, got The Skull of Torture. So, you can waste time camping the items needed for this quest or just go kill multiple mobs and get a Glowing Skull from one of them and turn that in. What I noticed is that Greater Scalbones and higher drop it, and only skellies, no furbies.

I got it! All done! The cook finally popped and when he did, I gave him a hail. Got the usual text (to be posted when I get more time) then tried to hand him the Jerky, the eyes and the tongue...he gave it all back...so then I combined all of them in the hollow skull...BAM! Got a New Glowing Skull...Lore, NO DROP, NO RENT type. I gave that to him and he collapsed (more text) and in my hand was the Skull of Torture Neck item, 0.0 wt., Effect Burning Affliction 1, AC 2 and a light source...picture to come soon!!! I will make a more detailed post when I get all the pictures cut down to a postable size and copy the exact text.

This results in Kurn's Jerky Delight -- be very careful not to accidentally eat it! (The hollow skull container is also returned).

This is then combined with the 2 eyes and the tongue in the skull, to get a glowing skull, which according to Magelo is the same item that's been dropping in Kurn's Tower since September 2001 (Kunark's release).

This is NORENT, so don't do the combine before you get to the cook, just in case...

Give it to the Cook, and you get this text:
Quote:
The cook's bones crack as he reaches out to take the skull from your hands. A voice in your mind says, 'thank you now I can leave this dreadful place. Please take this as I no longer have any use for it' The cook places the skull back in your hands before collapsing into a lifeless pile of bones.

And your reward... The Skull of Torture. Clearly, this has been updated since Kunark launched, because (a) Focus effects are a new thing, and (b) this would have been an 'Uber' item in the old Kunark days.

Well, looks as though the Rotten Flesh Hunters have made it to the live server and are in Field of Bone just like the previous post stated. But they got the mob level/difficulty WAY off the mark right now!

As a 49 Warrior, this mob was out-pacing me in hit points (him hitting me for 66 damage about every 20 seconds or so, me hitting him for 500 damage or more in the same span of time). But yet, he's blue or maybe even green to the local hunters in the area so all I needed was a Necro to fear kite him for me and I did the rest. Took me over 5 minutes of hacking to bring him down but I did. And he dropped a single Zombie Flesh for my reward. I in turn handed the Necro two stacks of bone chips for the assistance and we were both happy.

Whether this shows that the quest has indeed been fixed now remains to be seen of course. I'm still missing some items and didn't have time to recruit another Necro for my second Zombie Flesh. But with any luck I'll have the entire set of pieces by tomorrow (save for the bones still) and we'll have to see what happens from there.

In the meantime, I'd look for this mob to be tuned up significantly. Not sure how they missed this one, but it's an awefully rude mob to place in a newbie zone, particularly since it's "ready to attack" :( I was lauded in the zone as a Hero when word got out that I killed him. Apparently he'd been terrorizing the place for some time and nobody had gotten upset enough to bring their high level on to crush him I guess :)

Okay, gonna kill off a lot of misconceptions about this quest, and bring people up-to-date on the quest.

First... the quest drops/combines have been REDONE. Do not expect anything that was true in the past to be true now.

The burynai forager has nothing to do with the quest anymore.

Thick Boned Skeletons are place-holders for a lot of mobs. Not all, though. And sometimes a Burynai will spawn instead of the TBS in the stables for Crackling Bones' PH

Go up to the top of the tower, the Cook spawns there now, and is non-kos. Hail him. He says:

"Some cracked old bones, 2 zombie flesh, and a salt minnow make up the rest. Throw inside a skull and mix, and I would have a delightful dish. But with no eyes I have no sight to make Kurns' delicious delight. And if I could I would not eat without a tongue behind my teeth."

There you have it. The skull container is not used to combine the eyes and tongue. It's used to make up the food the Cook wants.

Cracked Old Bones: Not yet discovered
Zombie Flesh: Zombie Skin (Antonica drop) does not work. This is a new drop. Dropped off Rotten Flesh Hunters in Field of Bone on Test, but they have yet to be seen on live. The flesh probably drops somewhere different now on Live.
Salt Minnow: This elusive fish is now on Live servers, and can be fished in Cabilis.

Other Drops
Right Eye: Crackling Bones - in the stables area, where the Cook used to spawn. (Middle stable in the set of 3)
Left Eye: a burynai flesh reaper - Rarish spawn in the tunnels under the tower. Location is +200, -232 by a firepot. PHs are usually other burynai.
Tongue: Undead Tower Guard - if you're standing at zonein, he spawns in the room farthest away, on the left (next to the stairs up) and has non-named placeholders.
Skull: Undead Jester, still, who spawns much more frequently, and in the same place (him/PH roam along the halls in the stables, no need to kill things in stables to get him to pop.) The note's text has changed from "sweet honey flesh" to "sweet crunchy flesh"

The canopics are no longer a step in the quest. The mobs now drop the preserved eyes.

The skull is now medium-sized, to fit the larger food items.

Scroll down about 6 posts and see that thread I linked. Much more trial/error done and discussed there, and they're much closer to the solution.

So basic rundown of what we probably have to do...

1) Get the skull, eyes and tongue off their respective mobs
2) Do NOT visit the dude in OT anymore, since we don't get canopics anymore
3) Fish for the fish, get the zombie flesh somewhere, and the bones
4) Combine the fish, flesh, bones in the skull to get the food.
5) Give the cook the food, 2 eyes and tongue to complete the quest.

No longer are we trying to combine the eyes, etc in the skull. The Cook (who, presumeably, is Mirgon Dower), has a skull. He just lacks the eyes, tongue and food.

So please, go out and try to find Zombie Flesh, fish the fish, and try combining various bone things with them. Presumeably these bones are going to be some rare spawn thing, and I'm guessing not in Kurn's, as the other 2 recipe items are outside Kurn's as well.

Good luck!

Getting closer

Decided to dust off one of my first characters,53 monk, and finish the shackle quest now that they added Tynnonian. Did that and had so much fun thought I would run through them again to get the shackle of Steel. While running around waiting for the fingered skeleton I noticed several changes since long ago.

First, the Cook no longer pops, in his place is a Skelly called Cracklin Bones, he drops a perserved eye. Earlier posts claim this can be identified as right eye of torture.

Second, they have upped the rate that the Undead Jester pops. Instead of once in a millenium, I have killed him four times in about four hours. He dropped the Iksar Beserker club once. In addition to the note mentioned in the quest, he now also drops the hollow skull that the cook used to drop. Also, the skull has been changed to medium.

Third, the rate on the forager has gone down, I have yet to see him and I am clearing the entire level to try and get him to spawn, I assume he still drops the tongue and at least one jar for an eye.

Fourth, and most importantly, I believe I have found the fourth item. In the third room down from the where the undead jester pops I have looted a tiny glowing skull. This is not the same skull found on the Crusader on the top floor for the shaman cudgel quest. This skull is NO RENT! The first night it dropped off of a lessor icebone skeleton. The second night off of a scalebone skeleton, but in the same room. As soon as I get the tongue and second eye I will test out my theory.

Read posts underneath before you post a question someone answered 3 lines below. Here's a brief summary.

Honey Mush Bread, which was added in a patch as part of a quest, is for another quest involving making a sandwich for someone for a hat. As I said before, honey will probably have nothing to do with the quest.

People have tried just the eyes and tongue. They've tried adding the note. None of them worked.

The Glowing Skull that IDs as the Skull of Torture has always been dropping in Kurn's, and is used in one of the SK Kukri quests. While it's a possibility, it's highly doubtful, since the quest apparently wasn't working when the skull was still dropping.

All the various Honey and flesh things... *shrug* I'm of the opinion that you're all chasing a red herring. He used to eat flesh. I doubt you actually combine flesh in there... and honey... that's just kinda absurd to think it'd go in there.

Chances are, based on the clues, either the tongue has to be restored out of its dried state, or a 4th item is missing. Chances are it drops in Kurns as well.

Now the patch message was unspecific if the 4th item wasn't dropping, or if the proper 3 or 4 item combine wasn't working before, but is now.

So, I read all the posts on that thread someone linked (thanks, very good reading)

http://pub8.ezboard.com/foldunsolvedquestsineverquestfrm1.showMessage?topicID=88.topic is a newer thread, started after the patch that "fixed" the quest, to help kill off old info that may be inaccurate.

Thing is, from the looks of what people are posting, the quest STILL isn't fixed. There's lots of new things on Test in FoB and Kurn's that point towards this quest, including a recipe for Kurn's Jerky Delight, which is referenced as Honey Flesh. The items required for the recipe don't seem to drop on live servers yet, including an elusive fish.

Anyway, I'm trolling around Kurn's with my wife right now trying to get this bugger solved. Would suggest you read all the various threads involved to see what has/hasn't been tried, and what looks to be happening on Test.

Edit: Messed around on Test. The quest is somewhat different than we thought. The Skeletal Cook now spawns upstairs at the top of the tower, and gives you a recipe that you combine in the skull, which is now a different size container. So you make the food in the skull, then give him his eyes, tongue and the food, presumeably, from the text he gives. There are new mobs that drop the eyes/tongue as well, so I assume the Burynai Forager isn't such a bottleneck anymore.

Sounds like 3 different mobs, 3 different drops. New mobs in FoB drop zombie flesh for the food you make for the Cook, and some bones (doubt it's bone chips, too easy to obtain)

Oh, and the skull drops off the Jester in the basement now. Where the cook used to spawn is a new named mob or its PH. The usual Thick-Boned skeleton PH rule applies for the most part. A furby (Burynai) can be PHing the mob in the cook's old spawnpoint.

# Jul 13 2003 at 1:38 PM Rating: Decent
Poeple, the solution is quite simple...Burynai Foragers drop all the body parts for the skull. There are 3 things I have in mind to do: 1: Forage around Kurn's Tower for the body part. He found some, it must be a hint...Secondly: Try combining the note in the skull along with the 3 items 3:If not that then he must drop a body part not yet discovered yet...*shrug* Just my cp.

We've gotta get this solved, folks... doing a search for "Honey" I came across only one item that was tiny. Honeycomb.

However, I don't think the honey has anything to do with it. Re-read the riddle. Sweet honey flesh. Meaning he used to eat flesh that tasted good.

I think the key is the "His new head did glow once upon a time." Maybe we have to make it glow again. Do his eyes/tongue act as a lightsource? If not, maybe the 4th item is some kind of glowing item.

So, looking up "glow", I came across a few things. (All are Tiny)

"A Glowing Skull" which IDs as "Skull of Torture" (seems weird to put a skull inside a skull, though.)

"Glowing Crystal"

"Glowing Iksar Skull"

"Glowing Meteor Fragment"

"Glowing Torch"

2 different "Tiny Glowing Skull"s (both ID something about Rok Nolok)

My guess would be the Iksar Skull or the Glowing Skull. Read an earlier post saying someone got one in Kurn's. Gonna take my iksar monk over and start this quest, I think. I always destroyed anything that dropped, since it was a broken quest =\
RE: Okay...
# Mar 26 2004 at 6:04 AM Rating: Decent
Of course it can be for two quests....look at noob quest items they are more then likely used for something else as well. As for the glowing skull all you have to do is kill some of the higher lvl skeles for them... they can drop off of greater scalebones but are pretty rare. They drop of most skeles above that pretty easy. Just give to the cook and he drops..have the courtesy not to kill the cook if he spawns..hes non-agro to most if not all factions and is only there about 50% of the time.. just leave him be unless ur doin this quest.
