In Befallen's first level, you'll find a room with four skeletal excavators. Kill them until you get a skeletal foreman to spawn (/loc?).

a skeletal foreman shouts 'Dig! Dig faster, you fools! Our masters say this ghost is all that stands in the way of the great one's return. Uncover his hiding place so that the forces of the Burning Dead might destroy him and recover its legacy!'

Once the foreman is killed, a ghost named Sir Ariam Arcanum will spawn. Hail him and he will tell you his story.

You say, 'Hail, Sir Ariam Arcanum'

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'My thanks for destroying these minions of Befallen's masters.' Sir Ariam's form suddenly contorts in agony. 'This accursed place rends my soul trying to twist me to its purposes. My time here is short.'

You say "I sense a deep pain within you, ghost. Is there some way I might assist you so that you may find eternal rest?"

After that he will tell you more about his story and ask you to perform a task for him.

You say "I will perform any task that will cleanse this place."

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'I have this parchment that must be delivered to either the Knights of Truth in Freeport or to the Queen of Neriak. The contents of the note concern them both and I am desperate to have this matter addressed so ask that you take it to which ever of the cities will accept your presence. Will you take the note to the [Knights of Truth] or to [The Dead]?'

You say, 'I will take it to the Knights of Truth.'

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'It must be delivered to Sir Artanis in the city of Freeport. It details a terrible plan of the masters of this place to restore life to a foul necromancer named Marnek. The Burning Dead must not be allowed to achieve this goal. So that you may ride swiftly with news of this nefarious scheme, take this as well, the bridle to the noble steed that was entombed alive with me here. He has strength enough for one final ride.'

He despawns. You receive a Scroll of the Burning Dead and a Ghostly Bridle (NO TRADE/TEMPORARY/LORE with one charge of Summon: Horse). The scroll reads:

... all our enemies will once again tremble. My friends, the pieces are nearly in place so that our great master, Marnek Jaull may rise up again and spread the cleansing fire of the Burning Prince. Oh, how little our enemies realize! There are some among them who believe they have the knowledge to properly assemble the masters wand. And they deem mere legend the threat of so many of the masters other great weapons and his repository of knowledge that we have carefully safeguarded until this time: his return. The time is near. Rejoice. In humble service to Solusek Ro, Priest Amiaz.

Give the scroll to Sir Artanis in the Hall of Truth in West Freeport, at +825, -510, -125:

Sir Artanis says 'By Marr, what is this? .. Burning Dead .. .. Marnek! By my blade this must be stopped! Where did you find this?'

You say, 'I found it in Befallen.'

Sir Artanis says 'You did well to ride swiftly with this news. I must take this directly to Valeron Dushire. If you learn more about this plot that would unleash this monster upon Norrath or wish to someday soon aid the Knights of Truth in putting down this evil, then return to speak to me again at a later time.'

Give him the Ghostly Bridle.

Sir Artanis says 'It was a fine and valiant steed to serve its master beyond the grave, but it looks to be near its end. But I have a fine eye for horses, and I dare say it will serve you one more time.'

You receive the Bridle of Sir Ariam, another bridle with 1 charge of Summon: Horse.

We need logs of all dialogues (these are transcriptions), current faction hits, /loc of quest mobs, fight information, etc.

As a L20 froglok shaman, I went into the zone and killed excavators for, literally, hours tonight. No Foreman, no Sir Ariam, no bridle. Finally they shut the server down.

I've done the quest before, on my human bard, with no problems. But with the froggie, my luck was bad.

I wonder if it is the phase of the moon or something?

The necros in the side rooms will heal the excavators that spawn toward the "stage" where Ariam spawns, but they will chase you up the steps..and they would land a fear on me every now and then, and when they did, I would run through the door, into the back. I didn't have a key at the time, and would end up gating to get out of there - I hadn't played a gating, binding toon in so long that I ran back from PoK three times before I realized I could bind just outside in WC and then gate.

Just did this quest along with the Ariella's Token quest (with my wood elf druid). It took probably 3 hours of killing excavators to get Foreman to spawn. All the excavators need not be dead since he spawned with three excavators still 'alive'.

I did not get the note when saying the phrase 'I will go to the Knights of Truth', but I did get the Ghostly Bridle. I turned in the no-rent bridle for Bridle of Sir Ariam in Freeport. I am guessing you need higher faction to get the note although I did get xp for turning in the bridle.

I think many people will hate me for this but tonight I wiped out the excavators 3 times and each time the forman spawned for me. That does not mean it was easy for me to get the bridle, I have been gating in to West Commons (Im a druid) every now and then for the last 2 weeks killing off excavators waiting for him.
As for the note, the first time he gave me the note (using all the lines given here) and then the bridle. After handing in the note I gated back to WC, killed the excavators and again he popped. I just scrolled back through to the messages typed last visit (too lazy to type again) but I think I skipped one (not sure now that I think back). The dialog continued, got the bridle but no note. I think it may be because I did not follow ALL of the dialog this time. If you skip saying some of the lines you may not get the note.
The third time the forman poped (this is within an hour or two) I just left the forman there and /OOC to WC that he was there and left him for someone else.
I aggree that the Forman would sometimes spawn before all were dead, but he did seem to pop as an excavator died.
One idea behind so many spawns in one go and other people (including myself) getting nothing for so long may be related to game date. This seems to get little mention in any discussions. FYI I got lucky on Jan 25th, 3185 game time. It may be the day of the month, it may be the day and the month... maybe time will tell.

** update ** Done tongiht 2/16/04 - He did not respond to anything except [Knights of truth] and id assume [The dead] - I did nto get a parchment, just the bridal, figuring the quest one was hosed, I clicked to use. A lot of fun. you also dont take damage on a horse if you fall??? It was cool to move, cast and still see my mana full. Very cool, nearly sold me on getting a horse. Terrish-Thule server. Then I think I said Eternal rest, not internal?

Its very usefull in one sense. It appears its an older quest. The thing is before POP and even Luclin the longest run in the game is from the commons to Qeynos.

West Freeport, East Commons, West Commons, Kithikor woods (only durring the day), High Keep, East Karanas, North Karna, West Karana, Qeynos Hills, Qeynos.

(there is another way if you wanna go Runny eye and the Gorge, which you dont usually...)

Fun huh? Not only a ton of zones but arguably 2 or 3 of the still largest in the game. So there you are, able to get a horse. If you not TOO spoiled by POP make the run some day. Its an adventure. For real fun, do it wihout a sow. Or for that matter take boat ride one day everywhere you need to go.

Not to mention STILL to this day, other then POK book in Misty and or NEXUS at North Karna its still one heck of a run.

Besides it could be like one of those off the road theme parks, the cheesy joints you take a photo at, you get a chance to take some pictures of you on a horse, also cheeper then sow potions. I understand the quested turn in is NOT lore, so might be killer to have for a run. :)

ZOned in, grabbed the corpse, blasted the two excavators in the upper corner, went down the stairs, blasted one of the two at the bottom. Foreman spawned, blasted him, Arcanum spawned, gave him the lines, got the horse.

I just did this on the Tunare Server and have found that:

1) While can take only about 10 min to ge tthe items and be on your way there seems to be a timer on how soon he wil respawn. My wife tried doing this quest while iw as turning in my ghostly bridle and could not get the foreman to spawn no matter how many excavators she killed.

After completing my quest i went to help her and after hours of hunting (eventually going down as far as the 3rd levelm checking for hidden excavators) still no respawn on the foreman.

2)If you are an evil race and choose "the Dead" rather than the freeport version there is a very important note that is missed here.

--There is NO queen in Neriak--

Instead you need to turn in the items to the "servant of the queen" who is actually the Necromancer Guild master Xon Quexill in the third gate necro guild.

Hope this helps.

hi,
I just talked to sir ariam arcanum in befallen and I got the note and bridle AND token, here is how I did it.

after you get sir ariam to spawn say in this order.

you say, Hail Sir Ariam arcanum

you say, I will perform any task that will cleanse this place
he then give you the note.

you say, who or what are you?

you say, I will travel to felwithe
he then gives you the token.

you say, I will take note to the knights of truth
(or "I will take note to the dead" if you want to deliver to neriak)
he then gives you the bridle and despawns

so you have to do all you talking to him BEFORE he
he gives you the bridle, because saying you will take the note will make him despawn.

The quest description above indicates:

"(At this point you can continue the conversation to trigger the optional Arrialla's Token quest.)"

I didn't find this to be true, the ghost despawned immediately upon handing me the bridle and note. Now maybe I just took too long remembering the key phrases, or maybe its been changed... either way, be prepared to be speedy (e.g. hotkey both lines so they come out with the press of one button) or pick your favorite quest.

I can confirm that killing off the 4 excavators is the way to spawn him. Took me about 3 spawns to make him pop.

Last but not least, I got two sets of identical faction adjustments for the Knights of Truth variation: 1 when I handed Sir Artanis the note, and 1 when I handed him the bridle. They were:
Knights of Truth better
Dismal Rage worse
The Freeport Militia worse
Priests of Marr better
Steel Warriors better

Got the bridle last night, I was in the area killing wisps so thought I would pop in, as soon as I zoned in I see: Skeleton Foreman shouts "Get your lazy bones digging" or something to that affect. I was level 12 Ranger and twinked so I thought I would give it a shot, took out two skellies in the front (cracked and something) then I see two excavators and foreman in the back, I was the only one in zone so I healed up and attacked the foreman, both excavators joined in I was able to kill them with just a bit of life left so I was waiting for Sir Ariam to pop and like a dummy I bent down to loot the foreman and a diseased rat attacked, I didnt make it to zone and died. I figure there goes my bridle as I was bound in PoK. I used the books and ran (non-SoWed) to befallen loot my corpse and to my surprise Sir Ariam is there. I hail him and as other posts say the trigger has nothing to do with what he says so I tried a bunch of things figuring he is going ot despawn. Nothing worked so I booted up my second computer logged in and checked here to get the phrase. Got the Ghostly Bridle ran to Freeport and Turned it in and got Sir Ariam's Bridle. Kinda stressful but just to let you know he doesnt despawn fast as long as no one else is around to finish quest.

okay this should be easy to spawn foremen there is an order you need to kill excavators this is how.
First kill the front right then kill front left.
Second go to the back almost where you zone into WC, (if you have LoY use the map and itll give an empty place) go into the little room and kill the skele closer to you then kill the one farther from you keep doing this till he gives a shout to the zone when he does that go into the main chamber and go to a lil room in the main chamber (its the skeleton room you probobly saw when you killed the first two skeles) kill foremen get ghost to spawn then if your takin it to the Knights of Truth say "I will take it to the Knights of Truth" he gives you the ghostly bridle you take it to Sir Artanis (he is in the Hall of Truth) wait for him to come on the bridge give him the bridle then you get Bridle of Sir Ariam witch is the true blue bridle thats how i did this quest.

Would be great for the young ones although getting it recharged would prob not be worth it. Great for medding though. Really only reason I still have mine but very useless in indoor type zones where it would sure be useful.

After spending a good 6-7 hours on this, I finally got the Foreman to pop. The excavators are on a 19 minute timer, and there are four of the all near the entrance. Looks like killing an excavator has a tiny chance of causing the Foreman to spawn. Once the Foreman is dead, Sir Ariam appears for a while 20 seconds or so, so you have to have what you want to say hot keyed.

"I will take the note to the Knights of Truth"

Say them in that order and BINGO! Take the Ghostly Bridle to Sir Artanis and you will get Sir Ariam's Bridle...not the totem that they speak of but I am to believe they both have the same effect ^ ^... Take the Token to Arrias Arcanum to get the nice Neck slot item ^ ^...I like to make things simple ><

Alright. I've discovered the entire solution to the Sir Ariam Arcanum quest, and it was a slap in the face when I found it. It's actually described in detail in the EverQuest RPG book on page 358 (not an advertisement for the book, but it's a good STRATEGY guide overall).

Anyhow, here are the full details of the quest, as written from the book. What you MUST say to the ghost will be in bold.

As Vagner began to kick the piles of bones to one side of the tunnel, a glowing mist began to issue forth from a small vent in a rockfall that blocked one portion of the tunel. Vagner shoved Halwain back three steps and stood his guard between the cleric and the billowing mass that slowly formed into a humanoid shape. When the mist resolved, it was clear the warrior and cleric faced a ghost, for it possessed a soft white luminescence and hovered a foot off the grime-covered floor.

The benevolent, clearly elven face put Halwain at ease, but Vagner was not impressed and remained poised to counter any attack.

Halwain nudged the warrior aside and spoke directly to the apparition. "I sense a deep pain within you, ghost. Is there some way I might assist you so that you may find eternal rest?"

Thrning, the figure inspected Halwain for a moment, and then replied in a faint, reverberating voice, like that of one who spoke only softly and from the opposite end of a great hall. "Out time is short, hero, for the minions of the Burning Dead will soon sense something amiss here. Will you perform a task so we might lay to eternal rest the evil that dwells within Befallen?"

Over Vagner's growled warning, Halwain hurriedly replied, "I will perform any task that will cleanse this place."

"Then take this," the ghost said, bringing forth a rolled parchment from the deep recesses of its faintly glowing form. "This must be delivered to the paladins of Marr in the city of Freeport. It details a terrible plan to restore to life a foul necromancer called Marnek. The Burning Dead must not be allowed to achieve this goal."

Halwain accepted the scroll with some surprise at its weight, and then responded. "But who or what are you?"

"I was Sir Ariam Arcanum, a paladin of Tunare. There is no time for my own story, which in any case is of little account." The ghost paused. "But if you wish to know more of me, and to do me a personal favor after you've traveled to Freeport, then please seek out my family in Felwithe. Will you travel there?"

"There is evil enough here to busy us - but, yes, we will travel to Felwithe as soon as we are able," the cleric answered smoothly.

"Then deliver this to my family. It is my love for them that binds me here. Deliver my sister's token," said the ghost. The ghost carefully removed a necklace and handed it to the cleric. Immediately, the ghost vanished, though its gentle radiance shimmered faintly for several moments afterward.

"May your journey take you through the Plane of Health, there to lighten your soul," Halwain intoned, "and then on to your place beside the Mother of All."

Soon, the ghostly paladin's glow was gone entirely, and the grip of the dank tomb closed in on Halwain and Vagner. Both men squinted, muttering oaths to return some day, and then turned their backs on the evil and prepared to seek a paladin in the city of Freeport.

END OF MESSAGE

The only differing parts of the story from the actual quest are that you can either deliver the note to Knights of Truth in Freeport or to the Necromancer's guild in Neriak. That should take care of any confusion you may have. Any questions, go ahead and contact me.

Therefore, I command you to deliver to me any further information you uncover regarding the plans of the Burning Dead, and likewise I order you to return here at my bidding for further instructions in this matter. Now, begone.'

Here's my personal experience with this quest.

After killing a few skeletal excavators on the first floor of Befallen, a skeletal foreman spawned in the alcove where the skulls with glowing eyes are. He immediately said this:

a skeletal foreman shouts 'Dig! Dig faster, you fools! Our masters say this ghost is all that stands in the way of the great one's return. Uncover his hiding place so that the forces of the Burning Dead might destroy him and recover its legacy!'

I killed the skeletal foreman and immediately Sir Ariam Arcanum spawned in where the foreman had been. Sir Ariam was invisible. All you could see was his name and the two-handed sword he wielded.

I hailed him and he responded with this:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'My thanks for destroying these minions of Befallen's masters' Sir Ariam's form suddenly contorts in agony. 'This accursed place rends my soul trying to twist me to its purposes. My time here is short.''

Sadly, nothing is bracketed in his text, so I have no idea how the original trigger was found, as it's not exactly intuitive. Anyway, using the quest is it currently is in Allakhazam's database as a guide, I said to him "I sense a deep pain within you, ghost is there some way I might assist you so that you may find eternal rest?"

He resonded with this:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'Our time is short, hero, for the minions of the Burning Dead will soon sense something is amiss here. Will you perform a task so we might destroy the evil that dwells within Befallen?'

Once again, no bracketed text. I resonded according to what was already on the quest's page on this site. In other words, I said "I will perform any task that will cleanse this place".

Sir Ariam then gave me a note called "Scroll of the Burning Dead" (lore, no drop, weight of 0.1, and small sized).

He went on to say:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'I have this parchment that must be delivered to either the Knights of Truth in freeport or to the Queen of Neriak. The contents of the note concern them both and I am desperate to have this matter addressed so ask that you take it to which ever of the cities will accept your presence. Will you take the note to the [Knights of Truth] or to [The Dead]?'

I said, "I will take it to the Knights of Truth", to which he responded:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'It must be delivered to Sir Artanis in the city of Freeport. It details a terrible plan of the masters of this place to restore life to a foul necromancer named Marnek. The Burning Dead must not be allowed to achieve this goal. So that you may ride swiftly with news of this nefarious scheme, take this as well, the bridle to the noble steed that was entombed alive with me here. He has strength enough for one final ride.'

At this time he also gave me the Ghostly Bridle:

Ghostly Bridle
MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM NO DROP NO RENT
EXPENDABLE Charges: 1
Effect: Summon Horse (Casting Time: 2.0)
WT: 1.0 Size: MEDIUM
Class: ALL
Race: ALL

After giving me the bridle and speaking, he immediately despawned. I left Befallen, and when I got outside, I read the note he had give me. It wouldn't scroll for me, so perhaps it's bugged? Anyway, it said this:

... all our enemies will once again tremble. My friends, the pieces are nearly in place so that our great master, Marnek Jaull may rise up again and spread the cleansing fire of the Burning Prince. Oh, how little our enemies realize! There are some among them who believe they have the knowledge to properly assemble the masters wand. And they deem mere legend the threat of so many of the masters other great weapons and his repository of knowledge that we have carefully

As I said, it wouldn't scroll for me, so that's all I could see. After I read it, I proceeded to Freeport.

I found Sir Artanis outside the Hall of Truth in North Freeport. I gave him the note, to which he replied:

Sir Artanis says 'By Marr, what is this? .. Burning Dead .. .. Marnek! By my blade this must be stopped! Where did you find this?'
Your faction standing with Knights of Truth could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dismal Rage got worse.
Your faction standing with The Freeport Militia could not possibly get any worse.
Your faction standing with Priests of Marr could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Steel Warriors got better.
You gain experience!!
You receive 4 copper from Sir Artanis.
You receive 6 silver from Sir Artanis.

The factions that show as maxed were already maxed for me. I said to Sir Artanis, "I was given it in Befallen", to which he replied:

Sir Artanis says 'You did well to ride swiftly with this news. I must take this directly to Valeron Dushire. If you learn more about this plot that would unleash this monster upon Norrath or wish to someday soon aid the Knights of Truth in putting down this evil, then return to speak to me again at a later time.'

I then gave him the Ghostly Bridle. He immediately gave me this:

Bridle of Sir Ariam
MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM NO DROP
EXPENDABLE Charges: 1
Effect: Summon Horse (Casting Time: 2.0)
WT: 1.0 Size: MEDIUM
Class: ALL
Race: ALL

and said:

Sir Artanis says 'It was a fine and valiant steed to serve its master beyond the grave, but it looks to be near its end. But I have a fine eye for horses, and I dare say it will serve you one more time.'

I then proceeded to Felwithe to speak with Ariam's father, Arrias Arcanum. When hailed, Arrias replied:

Arrias Arcanum says 'I am sorry, young one, but I am too burdened by my own troubles to help you now. Please seek another of the faith to ease your soul.'

I said to him, "What troubles?", to which he replied:

Arrias Arcanum says 'My son Ariam, a paladin of this fair city, has been missing for many years. Now, after remaining hopeful for so long, I have given up and it has broken my heart and soul. If I could but hear news to know of his fate, then I could find comfort again. Until then, I am no good to others. I am sorry.'

When I tried to give him the Bridle of Sir Ariam, he simply said:

Arrias Arcanum says 'I have no need for this item Tarwen, you can have it back.'

and returned it to me.

I tried saying all of the following things to him, all with no response from him:

I found your son.
Who is Ariam Arcanum?
What fate?
Your son rests.
Your son has found eternal rest.
Ariam has found eternal rest.
Your son is in Befallen.
I can ease your troubles.
I have found him.
Who is Marnek?
Your son is dead.
He is dead.
He is a ghost.
The Burning Dead seek him.
Who is Marnek?
Tell me about your son.
Tell me about Ariam.

Saying the word "his" in any phrase, or even just the word "his" alone produced this result:

Arrias Arcanum says 'I am sorry, young one, but I am too burdened by my own troubles to help you now. Please seek another of the faith to ease your soul.'

That's all I have found so far. Hopefully someone else will figure the rest out. As for me, I'm logging back on now to try some more things :)

just did the dark elf side of this quest... the turn in is not to the queen but to the head of the necromancer guild.. in the neriak third quarter lodge of the dead, on the first floor center room, cant remember his name off hand but the center dark elf obvious caster NPC is the turn in, dont worry if ya give it the wrong guy he will give it back, by it (singular) i turned the note in first then the bridle so i made sure if i gave it to the wrong guy then i would not lose one
