This quest begins with Aqaar Aluram, located at -1460, +1046 in a camp with Eleann Morkul and Spanner Scrapsnatcher on the edge of a hillside...

You say, 'Hail, Aqaar Aluram'

Aqaar Aluram says 'Hail, traveler. May I assist you with something, or are you just passing through?'

You say, 'i'm just passing through'

Aqaar Aluram says 'Very well, friend. Please take care when passing beyond the river to the east. Several researchers and their mercenary escort passed through our camp en route to the temple. That was last week and they have yet to return. We are holding off on our expedition until we can learn more about what happened to them.'

You say, 'What temple?'

Aqaar Aluram says 'The temple of the lizardmen. The lost temple of Cazic-thule. It's just to the east of here... across the river.'

You say, 'What expedition?'

Aqaar Aluram says 'Several weeks ago, I received the news from M'lady Morkul that the Academy was researching this temple. It had been years since I last visited this site, so naturally I was interested. Of course, that was before we set camp in this accursed place. I must be honest; I was quite ready to leave after our first night here.'

You say, 'What first night?'

Aqaar Aluram says 'After securing the site, we set sentinels to alert us to any patrols or prying jungle eyes. Unfortunately, our magic did little to provide us with a night's rest that eve. The incessant sound of drums and the screams from within the temple had little regard for our lack of rest and already nervous disposition. Several times during the course of my slumber that night, I was taunted by foul visions of an unnatural sort.'

You say, 'What visions?'

Aqaar Aluram says 'My mind was filled with images of grotesque rituals. The lizards that inhabit that place were gathered around magical portals, chanting in a tongue too wretched to recall. As they spoke and danced, the denizens of some horrid void were pouring from the shimmering rifts! I awoke to find the others in the same state of horror! When I gathered my senses, I noticed that all of our equipment has been covered in some sort of black ooze, though our sentinels displayed no signs of having been triggered.'

You say, 'What black ooze?'

Aqaar Aluram says 'I really cannot recall much about the ooze. We have noticed that our memories seem to be affected by this place as well. I know that the ooze was present when we awoke, but it seemed to have been absorbed into the ground. It moved on its own volition. That is all that I can recall'

You say, 'What happened to the others?'

Aqaar Aluram says 'There was a story that floated about when I was a student. In summary, there was a tome of similar nature to the Phobonomicon. An ambitious mage recovered the tome from the possession of several faceless creatures in the Abysmal Sea. This mage reportedly went quite insane. The story claims that his last act of madness was to cast the tome into a living rift of matter. The rift then opened and released a creature of an unspeakable nature. This cured the mage of his problems... for good. That is why you should return all items of that sort to me.'

You say, 'What phobonomicon?'

Aqaar Aluram says 'A Phobonomicon, book of fear, is rumored to be creatable through the use of rituals and tools too disturbing to describe. Once the ritual or process is complete, the book will begin to take on its own... life, for lack of a better word. The book of fear is capable of unthinkable magic. Watch yourself, should you stumble into such a tome.'

To create the Phobonomicon, you need to collect the following items in Cazic Thule:

- Crude Bone Altar (container from "a Thulian High Ritualist" at the top of the northeastern pyramid)
- Black Powdered Incense (dropped by "a Thul Tae Ew judicator" in the Avatar pyramid)
- Flesh Bound Tome (dropped by "a Thul Tae Ew lifestealer" in the temple area)
- Tear Encrusted Obsidian Quill (rare drop from Thul Tae Ew bloodcallers, defenders, justicars, and zealots in the pyramid area)
- Black Ooze Phylactery (dropped by "a pool of black ooze", common spawn upon death of Thul Tae Ew lizardmen mobs)

The Flesh Bound Tome is written in Lizardman, and reads:
Like the mist that rolls through the jungles, the screams of the soft and terrified will fill the fields and hills of this land.

-=The voids shall open=-

Primordial memories of things that rest in the darkness of ancient voids will force the screaming souls to look towards the Faceless for an end.

His will shall fill their minds like the mist the rolls through the jungle.

-=This is the instrument of gathering=-

The black ichor of the Faceless brings life to its pages.

Dark smoke pours from the alter, like fear from the weak.

A quill desecrated in terror will inscribe the summoning words.

The bones of the alter cast shadows of things to come in this ceremony of ancient rites.

When combined, the summoning shall ensue.

When cast into the living void, the Phobonomicon shall pull from the coldest void of Fear, an ancient horror of an age forced from the memory by terror.

=============
Thul Tae Ew, the reign of blood will begin.
=============

When you combine the ooze, quill, incense, and tome together in the crude bone altar, it produces a "Phobonomicon of Thul Tae Ew". The Phobonomicon can either be handed in to Aqaal Aluram or turned in to the living void on the top of the northeastern pyramid.

If you hand in the phobonomicon to Aqaal Aluram, you receive the Medallion of the Arcane Scientists:

Aqaar Aluram says 'Thank you for returning this to us. I'll secure it until it can be returned for analysis. Please take this as a sign of my appreciation.'
You gain party experience!!
You receive 1 platinum from Aqaar Aluram.

If, instead, you give the phobonomicon to the living void, it summons a horror construct:

A loud explosion sends ripples of energy through the air! Matter seems to lose its substance, but quickly solidifies. A shriek fills your ears, followed by the pounding sound of drums!

The horror construct spawns on top of the pyramid. It's rooted in place; hits for a max ~600; and casts "Vortex of Horror" (AE knockback) and "Horrific Force" (another strong knockback). Levitation effects are recommended for this encounter.

The construct's loot table (drops 4 items per kill):

Amygdalan's Chain Mask
Book of Unspeakable Fear
Earring of Silent Screams
Horror Shard Blade
Loathsome Bludgeon of Depravity
Medallion of the Arcane Scientists
Thulian Visage of Horror
Untouchable Tome of Lunacy
Wailing Bone Mace
Wailing Bone Shield

So this is only doable on the TLP servers after PoP comes out I was told and if that's the case why is it flagged as era original?

It looks like this quest came out with the revamp to Cazic-Thule which was during LoY, so I have moved everything attached to this quest as LoY.

I'm certain that the zone was revamped during the Shadows of Luclin era, not LoY. The month was February 2002, according to the P99 wiki: http://wiki.project1999.com/EverQuest_Timeline

I think the original revamp was during luclin and then another partial revamp during LoY.

The quest itself was entered in August 2002 which was during PoP. I don't know if that was an addition during the expansion or was it during the beta for LoY. Most of the earliest posts on the quest items are May of 2003.

Anyways, let us know which expansion this shows up on for progression servers and I'll change it.

Quest dialogue
# Mar 15 2015 at 2:12 PM Rating: Decent
So I did this quest twice, once to turn in the tome to Aqaar Aluram, the second to spawn the horror construct. Here's the quest dialogue and info on item drops.

Aqaar Aluram can be found at -1400, +900 in the Feerrott. This is west of the Cazic-Thule entrance, just on the other side of the river.

You say, 'what temple'

Aqaar Aluram says 'The temple of the lizardmen. The lost temple of Cazic-thule. It's just to the east of here... across the river.'

You say, 'what expedition'

Aqaar Aluram says 'Several weeks ago, I received the news from M'lady Morkul that the Academy was researching this temple. It had been years since I last visited this site, so naturally I was interested. Of course, that was before we set camp in this accursed place. I must be honest; I was quite ready to leave after our first night here.'

You say, 'what first night'

Aqaar Aluram says 'After securing the site, we set sentinels to alert us to any patrols or prying jungle eyes. Unfortunately, our magic did little to provide us with a night's rest that eve. The incessant sound of drums and the screams from within the temple had little regard for our lack of rest and already nervous disposition. Several times during the course of my slumber that night, I was taunted by foul visions of an unnatural sort.'

You say, 'what visions'

Aqaar Aluram says 'My mind was filled with images of grotesque rituals. The lizards that inhabit that place were gathered around magical portals, chanting in a tongue too wretched to recall. As they spoke and danced, the denizens of some horrid void were pouring from the shimmering rifts! I awoke to find the others in the same state of horror! When I gathered my senses, I noticed that all of our equipment has been covered in some sort of black ooze, though our sentinels displayed no signs of having been triggered.'

You say, 'what black ooze'

Aqaar Aluram says 'I really cannot recall much about the ooze. We have noticed that our memories seem to be affected by this place as well. I know that the ooze was present when we awoke, but it seemed to have been absorbed into the ground. It moved on its own volition. That is all that I can recall'

You say, 'what happened to the others'

Aqaar Aluram says 'There was a story that floated about when I was a student. In summary, there was a tome of similar nature to the Phobonomicon. An ambitious mage recovered the tome from the possession of several faceless creatures in the Abysmal Sea. This mage reportedly went quite insane. Once the ritual or process is complete, the book will begin to take on its own... life, for lack of a better word. The book of fear is capable of unthinkable magic. Watch yourself, should you stumble into such a tome.'

To create the Phobonomicon, you need to combine Black Powdered Incense, a Flesh Bound tome, a Tear Encrusted Obsidian Quill, and a Black Ooze Phylactery in the Crude Bone Altar. The Crude Bone Altar drops off the high ritualist who is at the top of the pyramid in the north-east area of the zone. The rest of the items you need drop off the Thul Tae Ew lizards which may be found at the mud temple in the north-west, near the top of the north-east pyramid, and the mini-pyramid in the south-east corner of the maze.

In my farming I had 4x Black Powdered Incense drop off Thul Tae Ew judicators, 4x Flesh Bound Tomes off Thul Tae Ew lifestealers, and 1x Tear Encrusted Quill (identifies as 'A quill used in rituals') from a Thul Tae Ew bloodcaller and 1x quill from a Thul Tae Ew zealot. The quill seems to drop from any Thul Tae Ew lizard around the mini-pyramid. The Black Ooze Phylactery drops from a pool of black ooze, which commonly spawn on the death of a Thul Tae Ew lizard.

The Flesh Bound Tome is written in Lizardman, and reads

Like the mist that rolls
through the jungles,
the screams of the soft and
terrified will fill the fields
and hills of this land.

-=The voids shall open=-

Primordial memories of things
that rest in the darkness of
ancient voids will force the
screaming souls to look
towards the Faceless
for an end.

His will shall fill their
minds like the mist the rolls
through the jungle.

-=This is the instrument of
gathering=-

The black ichor of the
Faceless brings life to its
pages.

Dark smoke pours from the
alter, like fear from the
weak.

A quill desecrated in terror
will inscribe the summoning
words.

The bones of the alter cast
shadows of things to come in
this ceremony of ancient
rites.

When combined, the summoning
shall ensue.

When cast into the living
void, the Phobonomicon shall
pull from the coldest void of
Fear, an ancient horror of an
age forced from the memory by
terror.

=============
Thul Tae Ew,
the reign of
blood will begin.
=============

When you combine the ooze, quill, incense, and tome together in the crude bone altar, it creates a "Phobonomicon of Thul Tae Ew" (identifies as 'Fear emanates from this tome.') The Phobonomicon can either be handed in to Aqaal Aluram or turned in to the living void on the top of the north-east pyramid.

If you hand the phobonomicon to Aqaal Aluram, you receive the Medallion of the Arcane Scientists.

Aqaar Aluram says 'Thank you for returning this to us. I'll secure it until it can be returned for analysis. Please take this as a sign of my appreciation.'
You gain party experience!!
You receive 1 platinum from Aqaar Aluram.

If instead you give the phobonomicon to the living void, it summons a horror construct:

A loud explosion sends ripples of energy through the air! Matter seems to lose its substance, but quickly solidifies. A shriek fills your ears, followed by the pounding sound of drums!

The horror construct will spawn on top of the pyramid. He's rooted in place and max hit is about 600. He casts Vortex of Horror which is an AE gravity flux, and Horrific Force which is a knockback that can knock you off the pyramid (all the way to the bottom). I recommend having levitate or 450-500 magic resist.
spawn?

I have 2 questions please I need answered

First: is the Thulian High Ritualist a timer spawn on top of the temple or is there a placeholder such as the enraged tae ew fanatics up top?

Second: Once I get the crude bone alter and combine the 4 items in it will I lose the alter or will I be able to keep the alter for the next time?

Thanks

EDIT: - I killed the thulian ritualist today - he is definitely on a timer no placeholder - spawns right in the doorway at the top on the little ledge that drops down to the sewers - he drops 2 crude bone altars so you should have all 4 items ready to combine because you do lose the altar when combined and it turns into a book or something - but then u can loot the other altar for next time... the incense and the Tome I looted at the mudpit so thats a good place to camp for 3 of the pieces... good luck

On SolRo, the camp was called Archon (upper archon and lower archon)...however, with the revamp removing the archon, 4c seems easier and makes more sense now.
Anyone gotten quill recently?
# Aug 31 2003 at 12:15 PM Rating: Excellent
proper info

Flesh bound tome - can drop immensly rarely around 4c special mobs and in 4c temple, but 99 % of the time this drops from Thule Tae Ew Lifestealers. You can get them around the mud temple also in spots that bloodcallers spawn in, or on the top rung before amy protectors in 4c temple. More likely in 4c temple but drops in both places. I got one recenlt off the ritualist in 4c, only time i have looted from anything other then a lifestealer.
Inscense - rarely from other mobs but 99 % of the time drops from Thule Tae Ew Judicators. Not justicars, only judicators. Best place tog et this is from the front 3 mobs in mod temple ramp or inside mud temple there. IMO better to camp both inscense and tome by camping the browns around mud temple and the 3 at ramp. plus u can camp crusdaer for some loots. There is also a judicator spot on the same rung in 4c temple as the lifestealers spawn, and drops fairly commonly there.
Phylectory - any black pool.
Tear Encrusted Obsidian quill - mini browns in mini temple in the maze, and from browns that you spawn during the gnome quest. This item has not dropped for me in nearly a month now.

**** Has anyone looted the quill in the last 2 weeks please, or noticed anything about its drop rates? Also anyone know if the thulian high ritualist is still spawning? ****

Tear Encrusted Obsidian Quill does indeed drop off the little brown lizards at the mini pyramid.
2x off a Thul Tae Ew justicar and 1x off a Thul Tae Ew zealot.

We got the quill tonight (10/3/03), in the same spot described in the original post; from one of the brown lizards in the small pyramid in the maze (the one with the untargeatble AoF on top). We stayed there about 3-ish hours constantly clearing the pyramid and got only the one quill. Hope that helps some.

Where we got stuff!
# Jul 07 2003 at 6:52 PM Rating: Good
1. Tear Encrusted Quill -- Brown lizards near the golem in the pyramid area
* Brown Lizards by pyramid in Maze (close to wizzie portal). This Pyramid has the old Avatar of fear standing on top (non agro)
2. Black Powdered Incense -- Brown lizards in the Avatar Pyramid (mud bowl)
* Avatar Pyramid (mud bowl) is the one right above avatar of fear bubble NOT the temple in 4C (that is the old Archon Pyramid) These also drop off the 3 brown lizards protecting the ramp up the pyramid (we got ours from them we DID NOT have to go up top)
3. Flesh Bound Tome -- Brown lizards in the temple area
* Dropped of the Thul Tae Ew Spiritcaller and/or Bloodcaller (mean basterds with nasty AE) behind Avatar pyramid (mud bowl) near the spawn point for Thul Tae Ew Crusader...again NOT the 4C area. UPDATE: While going up the Archon Pyramid to whack the high ritualist, one of these dropped.

4. Black Ooze Filled Phylactery -- Brown lizards in the temple area.
* Drop off ANY black slime which only seem to spawn from brown lizards near avatar pyramid in mud bowl OR brown lizards in 4C, none of the other brown ones spawn the ooze upon death.

Hope this helps

Did this recently, was going great until we had the adds, got too confident or something. Anyhow, like they say have a group to handle the repawns or a enchanter team to mez em and keep most the fighters near construct or near north end.
4c = Avatar Pyramid?

Is 4c the 'new' name for the Avatar Pyramid beyond the maze? What is the significance of the title 4c? (four corners?)
RE: 4c = Avatar Pyramid?
# Nov 20 2003 at 7:38 AM Rating: Decent
Yes, 4C=Four Corners. It's not a new name though, it's as old as the rubicite camps, but it depends on which server you grew up on. Camps sometimes have different names on different servers.

Quest is not MQ able, u have to combine the 4 things in a container at the end, but the ft3 neck is dropable, a good group can finish this quest easy, if they take the time to camp all the boreing stuff
new feature?
# Jun 03 2003 at 1:01 PM Rating: Decent
I did this quest last night with the help of friends and guild on Inny. The Thulian High Ritualist dropped TWO Crude Bone Alters. Nothing else, but still, TWO containers. Makes the nuisance of getting to that camp much more worth it.
