You say, 'Hail, Errin Pinewhisper'

Errin Pinewhisper says 'Welcome to Surefall Glade friend. I am Errin Pinewhisper, Ranger of Karana the Storm Lord. You will find worshipers of both Karana and Tunare residing here in harmony. I train young rangers of both faiths and assist them in getting prepared for work in the often dangerous lands beyond the glade. If you are in need of a [sturdy outfit] suitable for work as a young ranger then I will gladly instruct you on the means to obtain one.'

You say, 'sturdy outfit'

Errin Pinewhisper says 'This specially prepared curing kit will allow you to craft an outfit that will protect you in the wilds of Norrath. The materials required for the outfit vary depending on the piece you desire to craft. Do you desire to craft Pine Scout [Gloves], Pine Scout [Boots], a Pine Scout [Bracer], a Pine Scout [Cap], Pine Scout [Leggings], Pine Scout [Sleeves], or a Pine Scout [Tunic]? Once you are properly outfitted there is an [issue] that you may be of assistance in resolving.'

You say, 'I desire to craft pine scout tunic'

Errin Pinewhisper says 'To craft a Pine Scout Tunic you require four [silk thread], a ruined gnoll chain tunic, a giant whiskered bat fur, and a giant field rat pelt. Once you have the necessary components combine them in your Curing Kit with this Tattered Tunic Pattern.'

There aren't any Chain Tunics. You want to look for a Ruined Gnoll Chain COAT.

That will work.

I just finished the rat and bat portion of this quest, taking my Ranger from lvl 1 to 9 (twink free, thank you) before I finished. (Now for the Gnoll armor...) Just thought I'd put in my 2cp...

Before I start, let me remind you that Everquest's randomness makes it a diffent game for everyone. My observations are just that, observations, not facts. What seemed to work for me may not for you...

First, the bat part ain't that hard. The Giant Whiskered Bats aren't that uncommon of a spawn nor are the furs, so just level 'til they con blue and waste them 'til you get what you need. The Giant Field Rats are the pain, as you can tell by the other posts, so let's focus on those.

As if I have to say it, use Track... always... constantly...

It seemed to me they spawned more often to the right of the North Qeynos zone, facing the zone. They do spawn more the closer you get to the Qeynos zone in general, though there seems to be an area in the hills near the Haunted Ruins where they sometimes spawn.

The @#!%&* rats (of all types) seem to run towards the nearest trail when you get them to half hp. The problem is that the @#!%&* guards patrol that trail and tend to take your kill. If your target rat is anywhere near a trail, draw him away before you start wailing on him. That way you have room to kill him when he runs. This becomes MUCH easier once you hit 9th level and can snare. (I SWEAR if he hadn't conned red that @#!%&* Guard Nash would have been MINE!!!)

I killed every rat I could find, regardless of level. Theory being that the time between Giant Field Rats (GFR, from now on) would be reduced 'cause the game would be spawning rats more often. Since I did that full time, I honestly can't say if it worked or not. I think it's a good theory though. And besides, not only did it give me something to do between GFR spawns, it gave me plenty of stuff to sell. The bones and eyes get 2gp each and then there's the Plague Rat Tails.... Use your gains to BUY the Ruined Gnoll Chain in Qeynos.

It seemed I got more Whiskers from GFRs that conned dark blue, at a 5/1 ratio; but that's prob random.

Get bags. You'll get lots of different stuff.

Man, do I ramble! I hope you find this helpful.

Good Hunting!

This whisker thing is getting out of hand. I haven't kept track, but I'd guess I've whacked at least 50 of these darn rats, and so far I've seen one whisker and two pelts! At this rate this stuff is going to take a long time. The armor looks cool though. I've got the tunic, the cap, and the one bracer so far.

Well, I finally got them all. I would say I spent about 10 hours to get 5 whiskers. grrr... Don't bother to buy the pelts, you'll get plenty along the way.

It's Giant Field Rat pelts, not whiskers! Rare drop plus Giant Field Rats are uncommon.
Anonymous, Posted: Jul 20th 2002 11:39pm, Score: Sub-Default, [expand] I used the shopping list that was listed and got everything but the gnoll armor and then come to find out that Wood Elves can't use. What kind of CRAP is that. On the Rallos Zek server you do anything to get all no drop at this lvl or any lvl but thanks to the luck of the damned Wood Elves we can't use. WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Finally they got around to the newbie qusets for Qeynos and SFG. Started these with my lvl 30 ranger (I know but I want a set in the bank anyway) a day or two after the patch. Spent 2 days in Black Burrow slaughtering gnolls, the ruined gnoll chain drops off of anyhting from what I experienced. That was the easy part, the giant feild rats were the problem. They were an uncommon spawn and rarely drop the wiskers. I have killed at least 30 of these and I still need 2 wiskers to complete my set of armor. The other drops are fairly easy to come by. The armor looks nice, a dark green leather, kinda like soft wicker but darker.

I /agree about the giant field rat whiskers. I ended up killing 133 rats to get five whiskers, I'm only making one bracer!

Pine Scout Armor Shopping List:

The closest places I could find spiderling silks for this quest are Everfrost and Toxxulia Forest. The combine is no-fail. You might want to pick up sharpening stones while you are there. Get a stack, they're cheap!

Large Whiskered Bat Furs drop from Large Whiskered Bats in Qeynos Hills.
Giant Whiskered Bat Furs drop from Giant Whiskered Bats in Qeynos Hills.
Large Field Rat Pelts drop from Large Field Rats in Qeynos Hills.
Giant Field Rat Pelts drop from Giant Field Rats in Qeynos Hills.
No drop Giant Field Rat Whiskers are looted from Giant Field Rats in Qeynos Hills.
Large King Snake Skin drops from Large King Snakes in Qeynos Hills.
The Gnoll Fang is easy to obtain, and randomly drops off any gnoll.
The Ruined Gnoll Chain is found on Gnoll Guardsmen and Elite Gnoll Guardsmen in Blackburrow.

[17] Silk Thread or [34] Spiderling Silks
[1-20] Sharpening Stone (depends on Blacksmith skill on how many)

[1] Giant Whiskered Bat Fur
[1] Large Field Rat Pelt
[3] Giant Field Rat Pelt
[6] Giant Field Rat Whiskers

Why do you need the sharpening stones, snake skins, gnoll fang etc? They are not requirements listed by the NPC.

I mainly ask because although I have made the bracers, despite triple checking I cannot get the tunic, leggings, sleeves or boots to combine.

Am I missing something?

BTW - I agree about the difficulty in getting the whiskers - killed 14 for 2 whiskers.

Is the Ruined Gnoll Chain Coat the same as the tunic because I cannot get them to combine.

Yes it is the same. I just created my tunic tonight and I did it with a ruined gnoll chain COAT.

If you can't get it to combine then you must have somthing in there stacked or an incorrect item or you are still missing somthing else.

Gnoll chain coat DEFINATLY works.
