Introductions

Maesyn Trueshot may be found in the ranger guild in Kelethin at -451.03, 520.32, 116.28.

You say, 'Hail Maesyn Trueshot'

Maesyn Trueshot says 'Welcome to Kelethin, ______! I am Maesyn Trueshot, commander of Faydark's Champions. We are the finest marksmen in all of Norrath. With our trusty [Trueshot longbows] we can miss no target regardless of the distance or the conditions.'

You say, 'What Trueshot longbows?'

Maesyn Trueshot says 'The Trueshot Longbow was created by my famed father, Eldin Trueshot. It is quite accurate and takes a ranger's skill to wield. We use our new recruits to [gather materials] needed by my father. We shall soon begin to release the formula to good elves so all may fletch such a bow.'

You say, 'I will gather materials.'

Maesyn Trueshot says 'Take this pack. Go to Kaladim, find Trantor Everhot and ask for dwarven wire. Then go to Freeport to meet Jyle Windshot. Search the inns for him and ask him for treant wood. Then, collect some spiderling silk from spiderlings and finally, in Steamfont, we have the permission of the gnomes to use any micro servos we find while destroying rogue spiders. Combine them all and return the pack to me.'

You receive a Material Pack, a 4-slot MEDIUM container.

Dwarven Wire

Trantor Everhot may be found wandering around North Kaladim.

You say, 'Hail, Trantor Everhot'

Trantor Everhot says 'Yes, yes!! I am a very busy man. I've got blueprints to work on, [dwarven wire] to perfect and formulae to calculate. In between those tasks, I have to find time to head down to Irontoe's and down a few Tumpy Tonics.'

You say, 'What dwarven wire?'

Trantor Everhot says 'Oh!! Interested in my dwarven wire, are you? Many are. I have no problem letting you use a spool, but I have to warn you that I have not perfected the strength of it yet. I will make you a trade. A couple of [Tumpy Tonics] for a spool.'

You say, 'What Tumpy Tonics?'

Trantor Everhot says 'Aaah!! I love Tumpy Tonics. They were created by Tumpy Irontoe. He was once a member of the famed Irontoe Brigade. Since they disbanded and left for parts unknown he decided to stay in Kaladim and open Irontoe's, the finest well in Faydwer.'

You can get Tumpy Tonics from Tumpy Irontoe or brew them yourself (1 Kiola Nut + 1 Water Flask in a brew barrel, trivial 135). You'll need four of them for the quest, so make sure you get enough. Give two to Trantor Everhot unstacked.

Trantor Everhot says 'Hey!! Only one?!!'

Trantor Everhot says 'Great!! I did not have the time to get down to Irontoe's today. Here. Like I said. A spool of dwarven wire. Now go away. I ain't sharing these tonics.'

Your faction standing with Miners Guild 249 has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Kaladim has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Craknek Warriors has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!

You receive Dwarven Wire. Give him another two Tumpy Tonics unstacked for the second piece of Dwarven Wire.

Treant Wood

Jyle Windshot may be found in West Freeport (a different version of him may be found in East Freeport, but that's for a different quest). Make sure he cons amiably or above.

You say, 'Hail, Jyle Windshot'

Jyle Windshot says 'Hello. Might I ask what you are looking for?'

You say, 'I am looking for treant wood.'

Jyle Windshot says 'You are a new courier from the Faydarks. I am sorry I did not stay closer to the docks. I hear that part of Freeport is dangerous and is filled with many rogues. I shall require a new Small Lantern in trade for the Treant Wood.'

You can buy a Small Lantern at many vendors, including Innkeep Palola in North Freeport and Innkeep Harold in East COmmonlands. Give Jyle the lantern.

Jyle Windshot says 'Thanks, friend. I have run a long way to get here in time. Mostly at night. I lost my lantern in a card game in Highkeep.'

Your faction standing with Faydarks Champions has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with King Tearis Thex has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Clerics of Tunare has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Soldiers of Tunare has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Crushbone Orcs has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!

You will probably receive Wooden Shards, which identifies as "Treant Wood Shards." Occasionally you instead receive A Wooden Heart, which identifies as "A Treant Heart." This is used in the subsequent Rain Caller quest.

Other Ingredients

Spiderling silk drops from spiders around the world. Rogue clockworks in Steamfont drop Micro Servos. You'll need at least two Micro Servos, so make sure to collect spares.

The Finale

In the Material Pack, combine 1 Dwarven Wire, 1 Wooden Shards, 1 Spiderling Silk, and 1 Micro Servo to craft a Pack of Materials. Give this to Maesyn Trueshot.

Maesyn Trueshot says 'I shall see that my father gets the materials. I hope this can be of use to you. It will serve as your starting point toward fletching a Trueshot longbow. It is unfortunate that we are unable to enchant the bow to its [next incarnation], but it is still a fine weapon. You do know the [correct components] needed for fletching such a bow, do you not?'

Your faction standing with Faydark's Champions has been adjusted by 25.
Your faction standing with King Tearis Thex has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Clerics of Tunare has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Soldiers of Tunare has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Crushbone Orcs has been adjusted by -6.
You gain experience!!
You receive 6 gold from Maesyn Trueshot.
You receive 1 platinum from Maesyn Trueshot.

You say, 'What correct components?'

Maesyn Trueshot says 'Now that I have crafted the Treant Bow Staff, you shall need one Planing Tool, one Treant Bow Staff, one Micro Servo and one spool of Dwarven Wire. These items will be used with your Fletching Kit as all other bows. Be forewarned, only a Master Fletcher can create such a bow and even a master fails from time to time. Good Luck.'

You receive a Treant Bowstave. Combine this in a fletching kit with a Micro Servo, a piece of Dwarven Wire, and a Planing Tool to craft a Trueshot Longbow (trivial 235).

Today a friend did the quest and only had to give Tumpy the kiola nut and water flask and he was given the Tumpy Tonics for the Dwarven wire. (after all my work to raise brewing!) The statement above is not clear, in that I expected to have to buy the tonics from Tumpy and he had none for sale.

That person was talking about the guildmaster tunics which have nothing to do with this quest and those tunics were changed to no drop so you can't trade them anymore so I nuked his post.

Ok you guys are talking about three different things here.

For the Tumpy Tonics, can we amend the quest description to say this:

You can get Tumpy Tonics from Tumpy Irontoe by giving him 1 Kiola Nut + 1 Water Flask, or brew them yourself (1 Kiola Nut + 1 Water Flask in a brew barrel, trivial 135). You'll need four of them for the quest, so make sure you get enough. Give two to Trantor Everhot unstacked.

And then for the Treant Wood, there are two different versions of Jyle Windshot who each offer their own version of the same quest.

The bad version is to go to East Freeport and give Jyle your Dirty Green Tunic* (identifes as Faydark's Champions Tunic) plus two gold -- which is the newbie guild tunic given only to Rangers with a home city of Kelethin, and what are the odds you even still have it?

The good version, as already listed in this quest description, is to go to West Freeport and give Jyle a Small Lantern. Actually give him a couple dozen Small Lanterns because you have a 90% chance of receiving Wooden Shards, and a 10% chance of receiving Wooden Heart which you will also need for the followup quest.

Just thought the guide should be updated.

Edit: I'm an idiot, this was the with the East Freeport version of Jyle Windshot ...

When I handed in my small lantern to the guy in Freeport, I ended up getting a Treant Heart instead of the piece of wood. Maybe that is what you use?

handing in tumpy tonics is not a fast way to raise faction. I handed in 460 of them ( 230 faction hits from completed quests ( 2 tonics each quest) and it raised my faction with stormguard from amiable to kindly. I do not know where I started in the amiable range, but considering the listing on the faction message

Your faction standing with Storm Guard got better.
Your faction standing with Kazon Stormhammer got better.
Your faction standing with Miners Guild 249 got better.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Kaladim got better.
Your faction standing with Craknek Warriors got worse.

Storm Guard gets the biggest hit and is probably 3 points. Amiable span being 800, 230 tasks, 4 points each would be too much and 2 points too little
Kazon and Miners next and probbaly 2 points. since there is one more alpha swap afterwards
Merchants is least and probably a 1 point shift to the positive while Craknek is 1 point negative.

edit - I continued handing in tonics. I handed in another 280 tonics ( 140 faction hits) and merchants moved to kindly. Storm Guard remained the same ( kindly).

/agree with VWDiesel. I am doing the Trueshot Longbow quest now. The Material Pack is indeed what Maesyn gives you. It is a 4-slot MEDIUM lore, no trade container.

Luck?

I guess I was just plain lucky, after having read how high this trivials...

I did it on a level 19 wood elf ranger, on Sullon Zek server (just after Omens was released), and made the combine with ~100 fletching skill on the first try.

One thing the instructions do not mention is that Tumpy Irontoes will not deal with half elves. Therefore, you will need to get someone else to get the Tumpy Tonics from him, if you are a half-elf.

There's two Jyles in Freeport. One at the docks in Seafarers Roost inn. That's the one that asks for a tunic. The other one is in Hogcallers Inn in W. Freeport. He is the one that wants a lantern. Very weird.

"A wooden heart" is rarely given out by Jyle Windshot instead of "Wooden Shards." I've edited the quest write-up to be a bit more descriptive on the subject. For now, keep turning in Small Lanterns until you get the piece you need.

"A wooden heart" is needed for the next incarnation of this bow the Raincaller. Keep the heart for later and keep giving him lanterns to get the treant wood.

First Tries

I also fletched mine on my first try at 17th level with a 127 fletching skill. Second attempt failed (after loaning the bow to a friend because they are Lore items).

I'm wondering, given the posts I've seen on this list and elsewhere, if there isn't some sort of bonus for your first attempt? Perhaps that explains why so many people of lower level skill have combined one on the first try when people of much higher skill level say that it's a crap shoot?

I have enough materials to try 6 more times - should I get my skill up much higher in order to hope to make another? Was the first time a fluke?

Nevermind. Answered my own dumb question...

Well, I might as well tell you the mistake I made, to help clarify some things here.

I gathered the dwarven wire, a micro servo, a spiderling silk, and the "wooden shards" that I got from Jyle. I combined them in my Trueshot Assembly Kit, (which seemed like the logical container to make the combine for the Trueshot Longbow). Unfortunately, this container is actually for the newbie armor quests, and the correct container is the Material Pack that was sitting in my bank - (I of course got both at the same time from adjacent quest-givers in the ranger guild, hence my confusion)

When I couldn't make the combine, my first thought was that Maesyn asked for "treant wood," and what I got from Jyle was "wooden shards." That part isn't clear in the above description, where the walk-through says treant wood, but the list of quest items has wooden shards. The wooden shards are in fact the correct item...just make sure you combine them in the right container ;)

Yes or no?
# Jan 02 2004 at 1:11 PM Rating: Decent
I'm a level 25 Wood Elf ranger on the Sayrn server.
I have done this quest and have all the componets
sitting in my bank collecting dust, as I did the quest below lev 10 with a fletching of only 20, so I didn't want to chance it then.

Now, a while back I also got a Hail from a higher level player that gave me a Trueshot Bow. So I was lucky enough to get one. So I figured I'd sell off the componets I had, but forgopt they were NO DROP, so, I kept them.

Now fast forward to present, I'm level 25, and have a fletching of 103- to 104 or so as of last night.
My DEX is 97, WIS 98, AGI 133 and INT 77. Now my question is this:

Should I make the combine attempt? Or wait untill I get my Fletching up higher? I don't need the bow as I have one (Thank you Uber Ranger whoever you were!) but wanted to make my own since I took the time to do the quest, and I could just sell the other in the Bazaar, or better yet, pass it on to another fledgling Ranger on Sayrn.

On a side note, I'm faily confidant I could make it, since I'm able to make Ashwood bows 6 or 7 times out of 10 attempts and only at 104 fletching. I have also been able to make 4 or 5 Rough Darkwood bows with Hemp strings already.
So I'm thinking I may can pull it off..

I'd just hate to lose the quest items, but I do have enough for 2 or 3 tries (except for the staves)
