You say, 'Hail, Megosh Thistlethorn'

Megosh Thistlethorn says 'Greetings Connun! I am Megosh Thistlethorn first Ranger of the Storm Reapers of Rivervale. I journeyed many years ago to the Surefall Glade far to the west of our lovely shire. It was there I trained with the human and half-elven rangers that like the Storm Reapers are faithful disciples of Karana. I have returned now to Rivervale to teach our interested young people the ways of a ranger of the Storm Lord, so that we may defend our shire and the wilds of Norrath from the [evil forces] that would see it destroyed. '

You say, 'what evil forces'

Megosh Thistlethorn says 'Currently the Death Fist Clan of Orcs, a race of bloodthirsty humanoids concerned only with expanding their territory and slaughtering all who stand in their path, threatens our homeland. The Orcs have long had a minor presence in the Misty Thicket but lately they have been amassing in greater numbers. The Death Fist has been chopping down our trees and quarrying rock from the nearby mountains. We know only that they have been shipping the materials to the commonlands and stockpiling it for what purpose we do not know. As rangers of the Storm Reapers it is our duty to [stop the desecration] of the thicket. '

You say, 'I will stop the desecration'

Megosh Thistlethorn says 'First you must outfit yourself for battle with the Death Fists. Seek Bipdo Hargin here in Rivervale and give him this letter. He will instruct you further on getting yourself outfitted for the tasks ahead. Once you have been outfitted in a suit of Thorn Mail Armor return to me and I will instruct you for your [next task]. '

Your Location is -222.35, -71.61, -21.81

Hand Bipdo the note Megosh gave you

Bipdo Hargin says 'Pleased to meet you Connun! You must be one of Megosh's new trainees. Megosh has asked me to help get you outfitted in a suit of armor to protect you from the vile weapons of Rivervales foes. I have assembled a kit for you that will allow you to construct the armor pieces once you have gathered the necessary components. The required components vary according to which piece of Thorn Mail armor you are planning on assembling. Do you wish to craft a [thorn mail coif], a [thorn mail bracer], [thorn mail gloves], [thorn mail boots], [thorn mail sleeves], [thorn mail leggings], or a [thorn mail tunic]. '

You say, 'I wish to craft a thorn mail tunic'

Bipdo Hargin says 'To assemble a Thorn Mail Tunic you will require four [silk thread], pristine thorn drakeling scales, a giant fruit bat rib cage, and a giant fruit bat fur. Once you have the necessary components combine them in your Mail Assembly Kit with this Tattered Tunic Pattern. '

I noticed recently that that the spawn rates have changed drastically. Before I almost never saw a thorn drakling or a large yellow jacket. Now the yellow jackets are all over the newbie side of the wall and the draklings are a fairly regular spawn. I got three thorn drakling scales in a row the other day. Before I had been trying for over 2 months and never found one. ;x So just to let every one know these quests are more reasonable in how hard the drops are to get now.

At least on the Xegony server that is. ;D

Two things:

Entopop and his little Amber came half way across a zone to ks a Drakling I was about to put down. NOW that sux. I suggest leading your Drakling (when you do get one) toward the nearest edge, then snare him.

Also, I've noticed after several weeks of trying to get this set of armor that when there are a lot of younglings in the zone (druids mostly) killing stuff, the Drakling spawn rate jumps dramatically--from 2 per hour to 6 or more--so the previous posting about killing stuff to make the Thorn Draklings appear makes sense.

The quests for halfling armor in GENERAL are hard to get the items for. Rangers are the hardest to get armor for by far. For the knobs who say "quit bitchin" and "camping? get used to it", remove your heads from your butts long enough to realize this armor is for NEWBIES. UNDER LVL 15. Camping for something for 36 hrs is damned ridiculous for what this armor offers. Some folks don't have the option to buy better if they are new and broke.

You flamers are losers of the worst kind.

I spent over 15 hours trying to kill these bats. I killed over 100 bats and nothing. Need to make the rib cage come up more often. Would be very nice and make alot more people happy.

Good luck to all of the rangers out there.

The drop rate for The Giant Fruit Bat Ribcage is rediculous. I've spent about 36 hours of playtime looking for this item. Everyone I have spoken has not sighted one yet. Why do they need to make it so hard, remember Everquest is only a game and should be enjoyable not frustrating. Verant better wake up to themselves or they'll lose players to other game sthat are not so frustrating to play.

Goodbye Everquest forever.

Dont know if this will help, but a GM last night mentioned that the spawn rate of the drakelings might increase if I were to kill every flying thing in the zone. Since at lvl 11 everything is green on that side of the fence, I proceeded in doing just this. 2 drakelings spawned, killed em (no damn regualr scale) then a few min later a third spawned. That had never happened before, as on Mith Marr, the spawn was allways 2 of them at a time.

Think Im gonn ask my guild to pull in several warriors and monks, and clear the friggen zone for all the newbies announcing all the silly drops. (hehe)

I too was stupid enough to start a halfling ranger and am really frustrated with the drops. I am still lacking the ribcage and one thicket rat pelt. The rates are ridiculous.

I just recently completed the bard newbie armor quests and believe me, it is so much simpler than what rangers have to put up with. Picture 15 rangers in the thicket, all with tracking, ks'ing each other for the drops. That is what it is turning out to be.

To get a whole set of bard armor, the hardest thing to get is the drop off the wisps and that may be 1-15. Not 1-120 or more for our ribcage.

I spent probably 24 hours of playtime over the weekend killing every giant fruit bat and thicket rat and have one pelt to show for it. My feet are cold and I need my boots. BP will probably not happen unless I get really lucky.

At least my tracking is maxed. Only bad thing about that is I can track all the way across the zone it seems only to have someone else kill what I am tracking before I get there! Ho hum!

Good luck to you all in your quests.

I have to agree with many of the posts already here. The drop rates on some of the items are very rare and it takes a lot of time and patience to get them. Couple that with a lot of competition for certain mobs and this can make for a long tedious process. However, I can confirm that the giant fruit bat rib cage does exist as I did get mine after three solid days of hacking everying giant fruit bat that I could find on track. I have still not seen a single large fruit bat fur drop, however, I was able to attain them from other kind peeps shouting and giving a loc when they found one they didn't need. Fortunately on XEV server most of the people will shout out when they find an item that is no drop that they don't need. As for the scales, again there seems to be high competition for them. I found the regular scales were the hardest to come by. As for the post below, where you are having trouble combining items in the box, yes, please make sure you have all items "unstacked". For some reason if they are stacked they won't combine.

I agree the drop rates suck, but only for certain items for me... like the rib cage, large fruit fur, and thorn drakeling scales (Normal). The prsitine ones i get too much of and I have made about 100pp selling them at 5gp per one;also gave away a lot... These armor 'quests' are retarded and i would suggest bringing in your main and blowing up Runnyeye until you have a full suit of alloy... Also, the thorn machete is not worth it; stats are crap. Get a Blackened alloy longsword instead... 4/27 or 10/29? Which do you think is better? Verant is retarded and screws the rangers over all the time. I would have to agree though; if you cant get BA armor get the scarab stuff; it looks cooler and you can practically buy the supplies from the stores in Kaladim. I didnt like the machete so i gave it to some noobie ranger... I have killed over 300 friggin giant fruit bats and they usually have nothing on them. I saw an auction saying someone was selling blackened alloy mail for 5pp so i bought it and they threw in a blackened alloy longsword too... I will still kill the bats because i won't sleep until i get one of those friggin ribcages. You'd thing you could just rip the rib cage out of them but Verant would rather have the rangers with the short end of the stick get screwed over yet again. My advice is to try to get the thorn mail till the stuff is light blue... so you at least are trying and getting exp at the same time.

Ok, this is most probably a stupid question but I am going to ask it anyways. I gathered finally everything that it takes to make all the armor, I give the note to the guy get the kit and the pattern for this tunic, put all the stuff -
4 silk thread
pristine thorn drakeling scales (tried with one and also with two)
a giant fruit bat rib cage
a giant fruit bat fur
the tunic pattern

I even tried moving the things around in the kit
the response I got, "can't combine these items in this ... "

What's up with that? anyone have the solution?
I'd greatly appreciate an answer, thank you!

Three weeks of regular hunting With my new ranger and I've yet to see a pristine scale. The The spawn rate on Draklings is slow enough but the drop rate is worse. I kept a casual tally and got like 1 drop for 12+ kills. mostly ruined scales, got 2 regular scales and 9 ruined scaled, traded 3 for the last regular scale I needed. They really need to fix the drop rate on this one.At least I've got everything but the tunic now and the rarity makes them valuable. Its the 1st time I can remember being able to sell newbie loot for pp( Sold 4 ruined so far 2pp each ) still If i had it to do over I'd skip it. To get the tunic you have to be either really patient or VEEERRRY Stubburn. Either way, Good Luck

It seems obvious that I have extreme luck on EQ according to the below posts. I was hunting Giant Fruit Bats, getting extra wings, etcetera. On maybe my 40th kill I got the rib cage. While killing the thorn drakelings by killing about 50 I got 3 pristine thorn drakeling scales and about maybe 9 ruined scales. I have never seen a normal thorn drakeling scale. I have the 2 bracers, gloves, tunic, and helmet.

Both of these mobs spawn in Misty Thicket. The fruit bats spawn on the far side of the wall (kill bats to get them to spawn) and the thorn draklings spawn on the newb side of the wall (or so i am told). Tracking would be very useful in finding both these creatures.

Run to freeport (start the trip at daylight for kithicor) take the boat to butcherblock then run to kaladim and get the scarabarmor quests- pretty green plate and droprates are SO MUCH easier, plus the items and rewards are droppable.

I personally killed over 140 of the giant fruit bats without any luck. Then, while I was over trying to collect the final Thorn Drake Scale I needed, another guy (thanks Biddo) had one drop and he let me loot it. That is the only one I have heard of dropping in two days on the 7th Hammer Server. It looks cool.... it's a bright green chain on the Luclin models.

Ahh, just as a side note, the drop rates on the components needed for most of these items is ASTOUNDINGLY low.
And to make it even better/worse,the spawn rates on the Thorn Drakelings is most heinous. The other mobs spawn more often, but refer back to the ASTOUNDINGLY low drop rates.

Hehe, otherwise pretty straightforward.

So far its just paid to be out there earning your xp and keep checking track for the mobs you need, otherwise you're going to pull your hair out and go nuts 8)

And yes, almost all the components needed off the mobs are NO DROP. So leave your main at home:)

Good luck on all these HLF racial/class armors !
