Mahron Sood is located across from the bank near a cage. (Bank loc is neg 251, neg 560)

You say, 'Hail, Animist Mahron Sood'

Animist Mahron Sood says 'Hail mate, did you need something from me or are you looking to do me a favor?

You say, 'I will do you a favor'

Animist Mahron Sood says 'I've been playing with this little hopper for a while with the hopes of maybe domesticating him. He's fond of grimling parts, so that's what I bring him when I come over here to sit around and
work on my leatherwork. I'll make you a deal... If you bring me four grimling toes or finger bones, I'll trade them for one of my leather pieces. Don't mix them up though.... I'm trying to see which he likes best... fingers bones or toes.

Upon handing in four Grimling Toes :

Animist Mahron Sood says, 'Thanks mate, I'm sure he'll love these! Here's the item that I promised you.'

You gain experience!!
You receive 5 copper from Animist Mahron Sood.
You receive 8 silver from Animist Mahron Sood.

Your reward is a random piece of leather armor.

okay so once in three years I will make a post and am not coming down on any one but come on people....doesit make you feel special to say everything i have i didn't buy...I scraped by and spent countless hours doing this and that and these people don't understand this and I have been playing this long...etc. give it a rest!! If someone buys their gear and is havin a good time I say good for them, its a game I hope they are enjoying them selves. If it makes you feel so special to call other players twinks because they have a social life or time restaints and might actually want to get something out of this game without 8 years of solid commitment then I guess thats what you will do. But come on, sound more like a bunch of bitter old people bickering. Play the game and have fun guys....it is a game ...just so we are clear on this..I know a lot of people forget this but it is a game. okay I'm good for another couple years hope you guys have a good one and if I can ever assist you in game feel free to give a shout

Well, clearly, the best race/class combo is human cleric!

Kidding. There is no best race/class. Each has different strengths and weaknesses. Play something that is fun for you, and don't worry about "best". The BEST character, is one that is well played, regardless of race.

At level 10, I'd suggest a good group for the Loda Kai - they drop much better than leather. Plus there's the ghulim armor quests in Shadeweaver that one can start easily at level 7-10. Questing is fun, though...

Level 10 and he has to wear cloth armor? Bucko, when I was level 10 I was tailoring my own armor, and while my tailoring isn't that great, by 14 my blacksmithing skill is past 100

That's funny how the smithing level cap for a level 14 character on would only be 75 though.. ;)

Hello folks. I have been playing EQ for...well....i bought mine when it was still JUST everquest and was almost 40 before Kunark was offered by mail to subscribers. At any rate. I have recently left the politically horrendous Tribunal server and started a kitty warrior on the tunare server. I'm already level 10, haven't worked on any trade skills yet and monay is very slow to come in. I am only wearing the cloak i got from my initiate quest and some cloth armor. Now not withstanding the flamage i'm sure i'll get...i smell twinks. You all say this quest isn;t worth it. But if you don;t have a high level main supporting your efforts...or a high level buddy that can get you good armor to start with...you're pretty well screwed in the money department for a while. This is a good quest, though perhaps a little difficult it still fits for the level you get it. Remember that i started playing when few smiths could make plate armor and bronze was the bomb unless you could do the crafted quests or ro armor quests...and that wasn;t till you were at uber 48 to 50. anywho i'll shut up now. the non-twinks and older players will probably appreciate what i'm saying.

In Shadeweaver's thicket if you talk to ...forgot his name, but he gives out ghulam armour quests, which are good, they give +HP and can be started at lvl 3 or so. (I think his name is Faer Sharar I could be wrong) There's also the blessed champions cape quest which you need atleast 35 in tailoring to do but I heard its good. Bandits in the caves also drop some chain armor.

Glad to hear what you are saying, Anon =)
There is one quest in Shar Vahl that nets you 2 plat, the "follow Shanai", takes some time, it "renews" about every 10-15 minutes, I timed it once, but it's buried somewhere in my notebook. Sit on the steps to the Palace, eventually she will appear at the gate opposite you, and walk up the steps, you must target and Hail her before she reaches the top. The quest only starts if you hail her there, anywhere else and she won't ask you to follow her. You get a compass and experience, and some coins (sometimes it is even plat, though I usually get a few coppers or silver)...take the compass to Arms Historian Qua (building to the south of the gate to the palace). He will buy it from you for over 2pp, other vendors offer less.
You also can take the whiptail poison glands to the alchemist next to the bank, he will give you random padded leather armor for those, a little better than cloth.
Just a couple of suggestions, hope they help someone.

Firstly, I'd just like to say how refreshing it is to see someone who isn't twinked or interested in being PL'd. Congratulations :)

Secondly, I have two low-mid level Vah Shir, and was disappointed to find out that there was a limited selection of newbie armour available. I always do the newbie quests with all my characters because that armour (with a couple of jewelry additions) can see you through to your 30s, when you're ready to start Solusek Ro or Rathe quests.

For this kind of situation however, I would leave Shar Vahl after maybe level 7 or 8, and head down to Blackburrow. Not only is the xp good there for a few levels, you get the chance of picking up some Ruined Gnoll Leather (stragely the leather has more AC than the chain - don't ask me why) which although it has no stats, has more AC than regular cloth, and far more than nothing at all! On top of all this, most of the Gnoll bones sell for a couple of gold each and are stackable, you can get a free bow and arrows lower down and you can even raise your tailoring skill by combining 4 patches of gnoll fur. That recipe eventually ends up getting you a 10AC 4SV cold back piece, btw.
This way, by the time you come out of Blackburrow (mid-teens) you should have enough cash to buy things to fill your empty slots with something that adds some stats.

My main is currently lvl 52, but I refuse to twink any of my characters with cash or items. Tradeskilling your own is all very well, but they cost money that proper new characters don't have.

So here we go, I'm open to all the inevitable flaming as well. I get that any time I say stuff against twinking or PLing, so I'm used to it.

/sigh

But good luck, Anon :)

I just wish they didn't make some of the newbie quests SO difficult! Take for instance the Human Sk of Bertoxxulous. Try finding the drops of decayed skele parts that the decayed skele's according to here should be dropping. Instead, I have only found 2 places where these parts VERY RARELY drop and off of Restless Skele's (QH) or Soldier Skele's in WK.

You take your casual gamer who only has a few hours tops a day to play. Trying to get your newbie armor can be very easy (Troll Ber) or an epic trial (Human Sk)!! Why can't these drops just be uncommon or rare and not uber rare!

After reading through the posts here I had to add my Smiley: twocents

First, I wish "Anonymous" wasn't so I could read a sig and find his/her characters and /friend them. Unlike many posters here, s/he seems to understand what makes Shar Vahl and the surrounding zones tick.

I must say that altho' I was turned on to EQ by a friend and joined the community when Kunark was about to go active, I never really felt like I was having fun until Luclin went live. Unlike the non-stop twinking and constant drive to PL and grab bragging rights the other starting points seem to engender, Shar Vahl requires thought and research and FRIENDLINESS. On my server (Luclin) you can see 50+ players helping noobs all the time, because it is honestly frustrating and difficult to understand. You can EASILY spend all of the lvls 1-10 in the Shar Vahl zone and get good battle skills, good starting quests, and good trade skills. (Certainly, I cannot understand the poster who said "it would be worthwhile if it gave you shade silk" or something like that, because if you work the Pit properly you will garner 10s of stacks of silks long before you get stacks of anything else.) W/o spending a single practice point you can get your primary trade skill, offense, defense, primary spell skill, and primary weapon skill all up to 30+ cheaply. If that's not good enough for you, then I suggest you don't start a kitty ... you'll end up feeling frustrated. Stick to GFay or another start zone instead Smiley: twocents

Flame if you want ... I'm still having fun. Thank God for the LoY bank change, tho' ... there are a lot of items you HATE to have to destroy in this area of Luclin.

Happy Hunting!

I am proud to say i am lvl 45 non-twinked. and i have not got UBER armor. but what i have is mine thru tailoring, and questing. I just got my fbss in lower guk. if you want good armor. you should go where it drops. rawhide armor drops around lvl 10 in south ro, and as a warrior with a cleric and bard at my back i had a full set by the time i was lvl 9.

Hunting is fun. camping is boring, but all make the game.

By level 10 you should be making your own armor. tailoring is so easy. Vah SHir are surronded by supplies. And yes Shade weavers thick is full of quests for armor. My BstLrd at level 9-10 was making bloolbulk plate armor (or whatever its called) unfortunately its no for BstLrds, LOL.
If you were on the Nameless server I'd gear you up head to toe with hand made stuff.

This isnt a flame, so please take no offense. Go out into shadeweavers thicket and visit the cat man standing by the road( forget name) he gives quests for no drop armor pieces that arent to bad and you can do at lvl 10. Will be far better than wearing cloth.
Grimling Parts..
# Mar 28 2002 at 11:51 PM Rating: Good
Grimling parts drop in the newbie crater. This is a newbie quest. The level range for the quest is just set wrong.

Yes, you can get the parts from other grimlings that will give a high level player some experience and be a slight challenge, but no.. This quest is not for those people.
RE: Grimling Parts..
# Jul 31 2003 at 5:22 PM Rating: Decent
NO FINGER BONES OR TOES
Absolute lowest level they may be obtained (w/o twinkage or highers making the kill for you) is 14. And that requires MAJOR luck (or a good group). BSTs start to be able to handle these guys one-on-one at 15. Other Vah have to have some help.
How do I know this? Ever heard of the Shar Vahl Progressive Tailoring Quest? Well, I've decided to MQ it so my 15 BST can get the items while they are still worth getting.
If the runts in the pit actually did drop the fingers and toes, then both quests would fit in perfectly with their required levels.
RE: Grimling Parts..
# Apr 14 2002 at 4:40 PM Rating: Excellent
Grimling Fingers and Toes do not drop in the pit. Femurs and ribcages do, but they are not what he is asking for. I agree that the level for the quest is wrong, but it should be around level 20 for the lower range.

those drop from the grimling skellys there... every now and then you can find a real live grimling wandering around there. I have seen them, although they are very rare.

I started a kitty beastlord A few days ago and have been putting some effort into it... just wanted to comment that the grimlings are not really *that* rare in the "pit". although I have yet to see one drop fingers or toes. I'm level 8 now so I've been venturing out into ST a bit and not focusing on the pit anymore, but I'll post if I come across grimlings with finger or toe bones (and of course, where I found them)

I hunted the Grimling Herders in the Moor for some time with no luck. I had more luck with the Grimling Fisherman. As a bonus, I was able to pick up a few of the Oil Soaked Rags for the BST part of the combined class weapon quest(Sonic Wolf Claws for BST)!

*Edit* Grimling Fingerbones and Grimling Toes also drop in the Grimling Forest.

In pit where are the grimlings?
# Jan 28 2002 at 5:49 PM Rating: Default
Hailed about everything in the S V. Went down to the pit to me killed by monkey people. Wow, to my noob newbie way. Then at level ummm... 14 went to pit for shade silk, and saw a bunch of grimlings running about like they just escaped jail. How do you make them spawn? Who do you talk HAIL to to make them spawn, or do you simply kill every thing under south bridge. Or was it North Bridge?
Jees, if I hadn't done enough quest here comes another. /log on . /log off*
Just can't remember but my ValShir BL hailed enough guards on both sides of bridge north and around outside walls of Shar Vahl. I must have triggered a spawn of grimlings down in the pit, I do know about the prisoners.

I went to the jail once and opened the cell door, went inside. 2 grimling prisoners per cell and there are 2 cells. I attacked one, both aggro'd and chased me out of the jail, guards didn't try to help keep their prisoners from leaving nor did they attack me...

I made it to zone, no telling where they went after that. Was playing a rogue and had SoW so I was experimenting some. =)

Wait one doggone minuit here.. I killed enough fishermen and any of their buddies in the vacinity to get a stack of white sand. All for Exp, and anyone familiar with the drop rate of white sand will know how long this took. I have 6 toes beacuse they stack. and was keeping the finger bones till I learned they were for the tailoring, but had no more than 10 drop. The merchants sell toes for 10pp each, and they are for a leather armor quest? These toes better be combineable in an oven to make soup or something else besides this. Ill eat them first. PS Yes I would like some cheese with this whine , thanks.

/em thinks to homself....
maybe people just like to do quests to be able to say they did a quest....
maybe they just want some free xp along with gettin xp after they kill the mobs for the toes/fingers.
maybe they CAN use the armor and its a waste to feed it to your destroy button when you could atleast be nice and pass it off to some random n00b I mean come on people its a lvl 20+ quest that means that its gonna suck no matter what.... GET OVER IT!!! its a freakin game and ya know what its free xp and if your lvl 50+ why not just go and get a FBSS or what ever any class can take that guy and get a FBSS and easily turn it in to pp in EC or Gfay.

/em thinks he needs to use more sentences not just one on goin one....

well thats about all I have to say...

LET THE FLAMING BEGIN!!!!

/em also wishes allakhazam.com had a spell check (ignore the spellin errors)

Me Too. People get all bent out of shape over this game, and complain bitterly if the reward on a quest isn't big enough for them. It's just a GAME. The quests give you a reason to go someplace new or develope a skill you may not have otherwise gone to or developed, they are not a payment for your time.

I collected fingers and toes from the Grimmies in the mines in Grimling Forest - I may have gotten a few of them from the camps/villages outside on the surface, and I know for a fact that I got VERY lucky and got a toe off of the Grimling Runner in Tene. Mountians. These are mobs that gave pretty good exp (and some were blue) to a 49-51st shammy.

I thought perhaps I'd get some decent lowbie armor, although not likely ... but at least I'd get my factions up in Shar Val ... You get neither. Being 52nd at the time I finished it, I did not see a change in my EXP for completing the quest twice, and the armor that I got for my reward went straight to the DESTROY button.

If there's a way to make jewelry out of the bones, then perhaps they're worth keeping .... otherwise, don't waste your time (or inventory slots!).

Good quest??? NO!!

Ok, peeps, this is a quest given by one of the people you meet during your newbie chain quest. You are probably level 3-6 when you meet him, and may get this quest.

Now Grimling toes, and fingers drop of Grimling fishermen, herders...etc. And Rarely, at that. These grimlings are between lvl 16-22 or thereabouts (still mostly dk blue to my 20BL).

Considering that, what kind of reward is Hopperhide armor?!?! Not only useless, but insulting. I've been hunting Grims for about 2 lvls now, and have found 2 fingers, and 1 toes. btw, you also need fingers for your tailoring quests from Broker Fahaar.

If the reward was more inline with something useful (a HQ hopperhide..SHADE silk...etc) this might be reasonable, but with the quest the way it is, I wouldn't even bother with it. It will only make you EverPI$$ED.

Which MOB drops the finger-bones and toes? Is it the Grimling Skeles or Raiders (not sure about Raiders, probably something tottaly diffrent :p) in the Shar Vahl pits, or something else? Also, do you get EXP for this?
RE: Which MOB?
# Jan 24 2002 at 4:55 PM Rating: Decent
I don't THINK the toes and finders drop in the pit....never seen one drop from a skel, and only seen ONE raider down there, you probably have to go to either hollowshade moor or grimling forest. that would be why it's listed as a minimum lvl 15 quest

Toes and fingers drop from the grimlings in Hollowshade. Reward is just plain Hopperhide armor. Not a very good reward for the time and level needed.
