(This is a long quest with a lot of TEMPORARY items involved to begin with...but it's a very fun quest with a really cool Roleplaying element...the Whisperlings! Who knows what other quests will get us "closer" to them, and be able to use their abilities.)

Tiamon Aroo is the Tailoring Merchant in the Building near the bard's camp fire in Shadeweaver's Thicket.

    You say, 'Hail, Tiamon Aroo'

Tiamon Aroo says 'Greetings _____, watch where you step for the [needle clawed hoppers] are just about everywhere!

You say, 'what needle clawed hoppers?'

Tiamon Aroo says 'Those wretched vermin swarm to our city and trade routes in search of the refuse left by careless travelers who pass through these parts. They are just about useless and their stench brings bile to my throat. I would have set out to poison the whole lot of them if it was not for their unique [claws].

    You say, 'what claws?'

Tiamon Aroo says 'The claws of the hoppers act as a [spirit anchor]. They are specialized in tearing into the fiber of the shadow beings that roam the thicket. I find these claws useful in [binding] the silk fashioned by the [shadeweavers].

    You say, 'what spirit anchor?'

Tiamon Aroo says 'A spirit can only materialize within our realm by binding themselves to an object that is a spirit anchor. Some bones and stones have such properties. A spirit anchor can also do the most damage to the material form of such spirits when used as a weapon. I use the claws of the hoppers as a sewing needle of sorts to [bind the silk] made by the [shadeweavers]. A standard sewing needle would only pass through the substance of the silk. The hopper claws can pierce through their ethereal fabric effectively.

(The previous part of this quest doesn't need to be done, but rather gives insight into what Groo McManus means by the "Spirit Anchor")

Groo McManus is in the White Building on the left following the road out of Shar Vahl into Shadeweavers Thicket. He's a Barbarian.
    You say, 'Hail, Groo McManus'

Groo McManus says 'Greetings adventure seeker. I have come from afar to study this strange thicket. The spirits are strong within this region, but they are secretive as well. I am willing to impart my wisdom to those who will aid me in my exploration. Are you [interested?]

    You say, 'I am interested'

Groo McManus says 'Very well then! Let us begin. First you must attune yourself with the nature of spirits. For this you must learn to find a spiritual anchor. Find such a thing within the crater that surrounds Shar Vahl and return it to me. Then we may continue. I cannot tell you more, but there is a Vah Shir who has the knowledge that you seek. Seek him out in this thicket to learn what you can.

Give GrooMcManus the "A Needle Thin Claw"

Groo McManus says 'Excellent! You have done well. I can sense that you are in tune with the spirits around you. Take this, for you will need it in your next task. When you are [ready] for your next lesson let me know.

    You gain experience!!

    You say, 'I am ready'

Groo McManus says 'You have learned a fraction of the nature of the spirit. To exist within our realm they must become a part of our realm by binding themselves within material. The hoplings claws have evolved to tear spirits from their material anchors. A disrupted anchor will normally send a spirit to the planes in which they belong, but sometimes the spirit becomes lost. This has happened within the crater that surrounds Shar Vahl. We must do what we can to [help] the lost spirit. The lost spirit had found the nearest anchor to take refuge in when its own anchor was destroyed. The spirit now lies trapped within the very claws of the hopling that had tried to destroy it. Will you help?

Groo McManus says 'Near the south bridge of Shar Vahl city, a mysterious rock formation hangs precariously within the crater. When you have arrived, you stand beneath the rock and call to the wind, speak the word 'Lumanes', be sure to clear all thoughts from your mind when doing so. If we are not too late, a kindred spirit will speak with you. Take your discoveries to my friend Shavra in the crater, she will know what to do.

(Again, doesn't need to be done, but who can say no to free experience?)

    Your Location is -852.56, 890.03, -343.91
You say, 'Hail, Dar Khura Shavra'

Dar Khura Shavra says 'Lo there wanderer. Something is amiss within the region, have you not felt it? I sense a [whisperling] nearby.

    You say, 'what whisperling?'

Dar Khura Shavra says 'A whisperling, who brings us dreams, you cannot see them. They do no harm, but I sense anger in them. They have made an enemy. If you are willing to aid us in our research, please seek Groo McManus in the shadeweavers thicket, he has some insight on these whisperlings.

The Whisperling can be called (not found, but called) under the glowing rock formation NEG580, POS560
    Sit and say "Lumanes"

    You say, 'Lumanes'

a whisperling speaks softly, 'Lumanes _____, Our cousin, a spirit of frost, is trapped. We may not intervene. Only one of flesh may aid us. Are you one [able to help]? '

You say, 'I am able to help'

a whisperling speaks softly, 'Then we thank you. We will lure it here. But beware, it uses our cousins strength to protect itself.'

    A frost covered hopling attacks

He has about 30 Hitpoints, hits for 1 damage 99% of the time, Burst of Flames (not often) for 4 damage
But, I couldn't do much more than 1 damage to him 90% of the time, and did maybe 3 and 6 the other 2 times I did do more than 1 damage. In other words, VERY easy fight.

You have slain a frost covered hopling!
    You gain experience!!
--You have looted a A Frosted Claw.--
    (A Frosted Claw - NO TRADE/TEMPORARY - Primary Piercing - DMG:2 DLY:25 SV COLD: +1)
    TEMPORARY!

(Note: The frost covered hopling can be summoned any time by saying "Lumanes" in that spot! It's basically a newbie Monster Generator! I got experience at 4, and with the easy fight, he can be killed over and over for experience. Hopefully Verant doesn't realize this and change it -=| )

Go back to Shavra (who is very close) and give her the "A Frosted Claw"

Dar Khura Shavra says 'Oh _____! This is a whisperling, and she is beautiful! You must find a way to free her of this anchor. Take her to Ragnar, he may know what to do. Let me put her in this bag to keep her safe for now.

Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl has been adjusted by 1.
    You gain experience!!

You get a "Frosted Bag" from her. It's a 0.0 NO TRADE object

Spiritist Ragnar is in the Var Shal Alchemy Shop west of the Bank

    You say, 'Hail, Spiritist Ragnar'

Spiritist Ragnar says 'Well hello... How may I help you?

Give the Frost Bag to Spirit Ragnar

Spiritist Ragnar says 'Eh? What have we here?'' Ragnar examines the frosted claw carefully. He closes his eyes and begins to chant while holding the claw cupped between his hands. As he opens his eyes he nods at you and begins to speak. ''You have done well to bring her here _____. This is a whisperling, her name is Siver. She is very young, so it is hard for me to understand her. From what I gather, she has an important task to fulfill, but I am still unsure what that task may be. Please take her with you for now, I think that is her wish. Perhaps Grawleh will be able to assist us further, and maybe even find a more suitable anchor for her. I think it would be wise to show her to him.

    You gain experience!!
You also get Claw of Frost.

    (Claw of Frost - NO TRADE/TEMPORARY - Primary Piercing - DMG:3 DLY:25 SV COLD: +1)
    TEMPORARY!

Elder Spiritist Grawleh examines the contents of the bag carefully. This is no ordinary spirit _____. It is a whisperling, a bringer of dreams. You are quite lucky, I think she will go with you. She will be able to protect you from cold magic. If you need more protection you can call on her to help you endure the cold. This is how the Dar Khura weave their spells, we ask the spirits for their aid. This scroll will show you how to call on her for her protection. You will also need to construct her a more suitable spirit anchor. This claw will not contain her much longer. Please hurry to Ragnar with the claw and a fresh [bloodling carapace]. It may buy us some time before she fades away.

    You gain experience!!
    He gives back "Siver's Claw"
    (Siver's Claw - NO TRADE/TEMPORARY - Primary Piercing - DMG:3 DLY:23 DEX:+1 SV COLD: +1)
    TEMPORARY!

You may also receive a minor spell.

    You say, 'what bloodling Carapace?'
(I may have done something wrong like cancelled the conversation, because he didn't answer about the carapaces, but they drop from "a Cht`Thk bloodling" in Shadeweaver's Thicket newbie area...you may want to collect 8 in total, you'll need 7 more later. You've been warned.)

Bring Spiritist Ragnar a "Bloodling Carapace" and the Claw of Frost.

Spiritist Ragnar says 'Well done _____, I hope it isnt too late.'' Ragnar begins to chant over the carapace and the claw, holding each in opposite hands. A soft light travels from the claw to the carapace as the claw turns to dust. Ragnar opens his eyes and begins to speak, ''It has worked, but all we have done is buy ourselves more time. While you were away, I have been speaking to Master Barkhem. He has a shield frame that can support these carapaces. You will need to craft such a shield by including this carapace and into the frame along with enough to fill each slot. You are doing quite well young _____, Siver has grown a little stronger. You can make use of her innate dexterity by weaving this spell.''

Spiritist Ragnar hands _____ a scroll before he continues to speak. ''When you have completed the construction of the shield, return it to me and I will strengthen the anchor.''

Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
    You gain experience!!

He gives you a Strengthen Scroll (bug?) and a "Frosted Carapace".
It's only a 0.0 NO TRADE item! You can actually pause at this part of the quest! (but why would you want to?)

Master Barkhem is in the Armory to the North of the Pool in front of the Palace
    (I believe his Loc is "202.18, -167.21, -187.62")

Master Barkhem tells you, 'That'll be 3 gold 2 silver 4 copper for the Carapace Shield Frame'.

Buy the Carapace Shield Frame (this quest makes me wonder what else can be put in this frame)

Now head to Shadeweavers and get ready for a long time of running around and killing Cht`Thk bloodlings. The carapace is a pretty uncommon(rare?) drop. This may take over an hour.

Place the "Frosted Carapace" in the Carapace Shield Frame along with 7 Bloodling Carapaces and combine. You'll get a "Dull Frostweavers Shield!"
(Dull Frostweavers Shield - AC 3 DEX: +1 SV COLD:+3 5.0 wt SHM BST)

Ragnar said he'd make the shield stronger when you brought it back to him, so do that. Give the Dull Frostweavers Shield to Spirit Ragnar back in the Alchemy Shop.

Spiritist Ragnar says 'Nicely done _____. This anchor should be sufficient to keep Siver bound to this realm for a while. She is strong enough to blind your enemies with a bright flash of light now, all you have to do is call on her spirit. I still cannot make complete sense of her thoughts, I think she is trying to tell me of another whisperling entrapped within the crater. Keep an eye open for the whisperling Scorpialis.

(Scorpialis is a weapon from the TailFang Quest. I don't know if he's just giving you info on a seperate quest, or if he wants you to finish that too)

Spiritist Ragnar says 'In the meantime, you can seek out a shield made of Xakra. Xakra made of the ethereal fabric of the spirit realm. I know the Shak Dratha within the thicket are weavers of this rare form of shadow silk. Such a shield can help us strengthen the anchor, making it easier for Siver to aid you. It will also improve her health greatly. She has been through a lot and is in rather poor condition as it stands now.
Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
    You gain experience!!
You also gained the stronger version of the Frostweavers Shield
    (Frostweavers Shield - AC:4 DEX+1 SVCOLD+4 MAGIC NO TRADE)

(This appears to be the next part of the quest, but is still unsolved from what I hear)

Need all dialogues (these are transcriptions), current faction hits, /loc of all mobs, solution to this quest!

If you do the Vah Shir smithing quest, you get a hammer an anvil, which Master Barkham refers to as a "spirit anchor." Perhaps these are used to craft the shield.
On a side note, about 9 months ago, I remember killing a Shak Dratha in the tunnels to Paludal and looting a piece of Xakra Dat armor. It had the chain graphic, was all/all, and was no rent. I had no smithing skill at the time so I didn't attempt any combines. It's possible it could be combined with banded, or with the bloodling carapace armor you make for Barkham

Well, I'm sorry to see that this quest still has no answers after so long, I was really enjoying this quest and kinda pissed when I couldn't make any progress in it. I've pretty much tried EVERYTHING to get a xakra shield, or forge one, and have come up with nothing, my guess would be that verant just hasn't finished this one yet.

Well, This is the only place that I can link Whisperlings too. So here is something for oyu all to chew on.

If you go over to The Maiden's Eye and kill the Centiean Creatures, the four arms in their city, you will take a faction hit with Akheva, The Centian beings, but your faction with Whisperling goes up. Now, the only thing I can tie whisperlings too is this quest. So it may be something to check out. Or maybe an unfound zone, or quest in ME. I am not sure. Just thought I would throw it out there for you all to check out and see what, if anything, anyone knows about Whisperlings.

Think I found the Xakra shield
    # Nov 19 2002 at 11:40 AM Rating: Excellent
I came across a Shak Dratha Guard (titled, like a named mob- lvl 14/15-ish) at the gor taku stone camp near the trader cave, and when i killed it, it dropped some type of shield, which wasn't visible on the actual creature.

At the time I didn't bother with it, since I had no idea what it was for, but seeing this quest makes me think it may have been the Xakra shield people have been looking for.

The Guard seems rare, though... I've only seen it twice in 4 months at the camp. Of course, I could be wrong about the drop, but may be worth checking out for anyone trying to solve the quest.

It's worth noting that the Guard seems to be on different faction than the other shak dratha, since I was scowling to him, but am dubious to all others (including the casters in the caverns). Just another possible indicator that he may be the key to the missing shield.

Excellent idea for a lead, that just may be it-- I'll have to check this out. One thing though, you say that it was at the "gor taku stone camp near the trader cave"-- do you mean the circle of stones with gor taku and shak dratha that spawn randomly around a campfire near it?

Hopperhide patch plus Shade Silk Swatch
    # Oct 06 2002 at 9:55 PM Rating: Decent
Has anyone tried combining "a small hopperhide patch" and "shade silk swatch" with a claw needle? I'd try it myself but I'm without internet access at home currently. If not does anyone know what the "small hopperhide patch"es are for? I get those often and they don't seem useful at all. Just had a thought...

    UPDATE
Tried to combine claw needle with small hopperhide patch and shade silk swatch, DNC. There goes that idea.

I got the Shield, of course. I also got Burst of Flame from the Barbarian by giving him the needle thin claw. At various points in the quest, you get the spells Endure Cold, Strengthen, and Flash of Light. As a beastlord, Burst of Flame is not useable by me, so I gave it to a newbie shaman. This quest is the only way I know of to get Flash of Light, other than running to Shadow Haven.

Want to hear something really funny. I did this quest with my beastlord and got Flash of Light...I did this quest with my Shaman months ago, and got beserker as the spell, which didn't fit the lore that you were recieving at the time...Must have been a bug at the time. I too had to run to Shadowhaven to get the Flash of Light spell.
    Just another thought
    # Sep 11 2002 at 2:09 PM Rating: Decent
I have a level 30 Vah Shir Shammy and have been following this quest for quite sometime. When I first read about this quest I pretty much followed the above walkthrough pretty closely. One thing I just noticed and maybe I am missing it elsewhere, is that the author didn't ask about the [shadeweavers] or the [binding of the spirit]. Frankly neither did I...has anyone else asked Tiamon Aroo about them, and if so what answer did you get?

Also another thought that just popped into my brain. The xakra shield may not be the last of the items either. So far we know that the whisperlings can anchor themselves into spirit anchors and that these anchors can also do the most damage weapons against them. Maybe we have to have a needle claw on us or being used as a weapon. Or maybe there are other items that have to be used as the appropriate weapon in order to release the next whisperling or capture it.

Where I am ultimately going with this is that there may be a whisperling for each one of our resistances or maybe one for each type of damage spell. Cold (the frost whisperling), Fire ( in Shadeweavers near the fire dancers, even though I have never seen or heard it), Poison (Scorpialis)...etc.

Again this is just another thought. I will try some other things tonight...I am glad though that I am not the only one trying to figure this out. There is a very large thread on the EQ Traders website for Unfinished Xakra Shield Quest
regarding this quest. You may want to go there if you are trying something new. Sounds like they have tried just about everything I was thinking of doing.

As another follow up...I have asked all the questions and they have yeilded no new info. So
    back to trying something new.

interesting theory... i know there is the blood coverd hopper that drops a weapon that roams in Shadeweaver's thicket... that might have somthing to do with it... (I still think the three vah shirs at the meditating pool in Shar Vahl still have somthing to do with this quest but i can't figure it out).

    Shak Dratha Faction
    # Aug 02 2002 at 7:35 AM Rating: Decent
I've been trying to raise faction with the Shak Dratha ever since I started my Beastlord character. It is now at level 25 and (according to a log file parser) I've killed over 400 Gor Taku and gotten lots of positive faction hits for Shak Dratha and many negative faction hits for Gor Taku. I'm wondering if these are fixed factions, because I'm still dubious to Gor Taku and Shak Dratha are still glaring threateningly. So I would suggest forgetting about the Shak Dratha smith, one of my friends used wolf form to get him indifferent and he still wouldn't sell. In short, he is not a merchant.

Does "deep in the thicket" mean underground or just far from SV? With all the posts that I have seen about people trying to deat with Dratha blacksmith with no results I am thinking that they have nothing to do with this quest at this time. I do remember somewhere near the northern end of the zone, a place where there is a moaning sound. I also seem to remember one of the lore talkers mentioning something about some of the earlier VS going out into the thicket and not returning. Maybe these two are connected and that somehow this is the next step in the quest. If there is another step to this quest, what about the Scorpalis quest, would make sense that that weapon can be upgraded as well, but I haven't heard of anyone trying to find that upgrade. Things for me to do while waiting on the other classes to finish their ends of the sonic weapons quest, so if you have them parts and need the bst part send me a tell I am on the Karana server.

    Nope, 'fraid not.

this is what I did try using swatches and silks:
8 shade silks combined in Shield Frame: DNC
(frostweaver shield won't fit in the frame BTW)
8 Shade Swatches combined in the Frame: DNC
Frostweaver's shield combined in Sewing kit with:
    1 silk: DNC
    2 silks: DNC
    3 silks: DNC
    4 silks: DNC
    5 silks: DNC
    6 silks: DNC
    7 silks: DNC
    same result with swatches.

no other clue as to what (if anything) continues the quest.

Has anyone hunted the scouts and seekers enough to bother to notice that they drop Xakra items? All are no rent, and therefore a quest item if I'm not mistaken, but I can't find the quest that they go with. So far I've gotten a Xakra sleeve, a Xakra helm, and a Xakra boots. I'm thinking that if you kill enough of them, and save the items (or dispose of them, whatever) that you'll eventually get the Xakra Shield off of them. Just my 2 coppers, but maybe it's worth something, I'm investigating with my 11th season Vah Shir Shaman. If you see some jack **** on the Seventh Hammer Server running around killing seekers and scouts please help him out, he's trying to further the research on this quest.

Yes the Xaxra no rent clothing items are used to make armor, but I think he has a point here. The shak dratha DROP these Xaxra items, they dont sell them or smith them. It is quite likely that some higher lvl shak dratha (not the seekers or assasins) will drop the sheild. Just a thought, hope it helps, I've been trying to continue this quest for a while, but killing all the gor taku to get the shak dratha to spawn is a pain, especially when they add...

The Xakra Kel armor you combine in a sewing kit with Tattered hopper hide armor to make it returnable. The Xakra Del I've read can be combined with Banded of the same slot ( this is not confirmed by me at this time but thought id share it

Don't forget that you have to also include a claw needle on that combine, or it won't work. The claw needle is another side quest in which you give 4 needle claws to Tiamon Aroo, and he gives some XP and a claw needle in return. So far, I succeeded in making the tunic and cap.

I wonder if the three npc's in sharvahl's reflecting pool have anything to do with the quest. I remember when I was younger that they were always talking about the spirits calming effect near that pool. Mabey another wisperling? Mabey the next step in the quest.

    Just a thought.

People, I don't think they've even finished the quest yet. I asked a GM about whether this quest was broken, incomplete, etc. and he/she said that he/she was "not at liberty to disclose that information to any non-GM or admin."

Anyway, back to investigating. I managed to open a trade with the Gor Taku blacksmith, he sells crap. Just a bunch of wierd weapons that have horrible weight/damage ratios with no special effects and a shield that had AC of 4 and weighed 10 stone, called "Placht" or something, and a small round stone called "Gor", a ranged weapon that does 1 damage with a range of 40 and a weight of 5. So that's a dead end. Shak Dratha smith isn't a vendor, he ate my Frostweavers shield when i tried giving it to him, so I had to get another. Gonna try combining shield with many different combinations of shade silk and shadeling silk, and now that Beastlords have See Invis at level 19 (equivelant anyway) I'll investigate the deal with the bonfire and this "whisper" thing. Good luck everyone!

There is a hymnist near the fire pit. when i hailed him he said to feed shak dratha parts into the fire. since the whisper is in there and if we do this part, maybe it might do something to trigger the other part of the quest. i have not had time to try it out yet, but this would be nice to get the complete story. i am going to try to give my scorpialis to ragnar to see if he recognizes it at all. or maybe mr goo. and i saw a picture of that sivers talisman or something, but i cant find how the quest begins. good luck to you all.

If the Scorpialis is part of the quest, and the shield is Beast and Shaman only, then why can't Shamans use the Scorpialis?

has anyone tried to take a chunk of condesed shadow, combine it in a forge with a shield mold and some water and a forging hammer or something like that.

chunk of condesed shadow drops off shak dratha too.

I have the strategy guide for luclin. In the beastiary the Gor Taku and the Shak Dratha are the same creature just different clans. Gor Taku being earth based Shak Dratha being spirit based. There are supposed to be other clans out there. I've seen one other. With the fire elemental in the tunnel to the "unknown" zone, there is four members of a fire clan (not sure of the name). Since this quest is based on spirits faction should be with Shak Dratha. Then again I just don't know. Also i have never found the fire whisper that is mentioned in these post and also haven't got a clue as to how the talismen of fire has anything to do with the whisperlings either, but then again my beastlord isn't high enough to kill Loda Kai all that easily yet. I also agree with the way that the quest are supposed to forces you to work with the other classes that maybe someone else has to help create this shield. I just haven't figured out how yet.

What is this "Unknown" zone people keep mentioning? There are quite a few high level Vah Shir, why hasn't someone investigated it yet? Also what is this "Fire-elemental" thing you're talking about, the Gor Taku Earthcallers have Wizard pets, although I've only seen Air/Wind and Fire. As for the Shak Dratha Shadecallers, they have skeles as pets, so perhaps they're more like Necromancers?
    unknown zone
    # Nov 24 2002 at 5:35 PM Rating: Decent
I decided to investigate the Unknown zone with my 51 ranger a few weeks ago. Enter the chamber and see 4 of the fire clan guys and Jynhadar (named fire elemental), all dark blue to me. Called in a few guild friends and first tried clearing the 5 mobs, that didn't work due to a fast respawn rate. Second try, we pulled starting on one end and rooting any adds, pulling thru the tunnel about halfway to the opening. Went down fairly easily to the group of 51(me)& 54 rangers, 57 pally, 55 mage, but sadly not much exp. repeated a few times, then decided to try Jyn. Shot Jyn and rooted adds, pulled to entrance of tunnel to be sure we lost the adds. Hits hard, decent resists, also discovered that he summons and gates (via him gating and summoning me...LOADING, PLEASE WAIT doh). Enlisted the aid of guild necro to summon corpse. Necro got corpse and pally ressed, then somehow got past the respawned Jyn to the zoneline (in a tunnel filled with lava)...discovered a wall. Same thing when investigated from the Netherbian Lair side.
Anyway, the "unknown zone" doesn't exist yet, but from the guardians on the Shadeweavers side, I'm betting it'll be mid- to high-level.
    other zones with similar MOBs
    # Jun 08 2002 at 1:39 PM Rating: Decent
As for other clans, there are MOBs with basically the same graphics as these kind of mobs in Echo Caverns. Their level is around the low 30's i believe.

Also something on the fire elemental ones in ST near the unknown zone: since when you kill gor taku it causes shak drathka to spawn and vice versa, isn't it possible that killing these fire elemental ones could cause some of another element to spawn? Could possibly be ice elemental, but wouldn't they melt from the lava? ;-) So if anyone has an uber character, and some uber friends, try killing some of these guys and see if ya can get anything different to spawn.

Here's another zone with some similar looking ones: Tenebrous Mountains. These ones are even higher level than the ones in Echo Caverns, they are dark blue to a level 40.

Also another thing I was wondering, we have an ice spirit(siver), and scorpailis (as of yet haven't determined if its poisen or earth),and the talisman of fire(being of fire of course). Question being are there any other quest that give any other elemental based qualities that would go into this set

Can anyone tell me where in the fire? I have tried repeatedly to find it and as of yet have not been able to. Am trying as hard as I cant to figure this thing out, but I have a feeling that they haven't put the rest of it in the game yet.
Also, I wonder if there is a quest to upgrade the Scorpialis. If there is would someone let me know that as well
