This quest begins with Yurddle the Caretaker in Katta Castellum (location approximately -600, -1710, 10).

There are three reward items. You can do one part or all of this quest, depending on which items you want:

Scimitar of Ethereal Energy
Staff of Ethereal Energy
Warhammer of Ethereal Energy

You say, 'Hail, Yurddle the Caretaker'

Yurddle the Caretaker says 'Greetings stranger. It's nice to have visitors of the living sort. Seems like my work here is never done. When I'm not having to dig fresh graves and keep the mausoleum clean I'm having to refill old graves that have been dug up by the [restless dead] or them disrespectful [grave robbers]!'

You say, 'What grave robbers?'

Yurddle the Caretaker says 'It is unfortunate that there are so many disrespectful people that would rob the graves of the dead. The citizens of Katta Castellum do not commit such crimes against their ancestors but thieves from Shadow Haven, greedy Vampyres, and even members of the traitorous Inquisition seeking old combine relics have been caught digging up the dead. I have [lists of belongings] that have been stolen, it would please the spirits of Katta Castellum greatly if these items are returned.'

You say, 'Tell me about this list of belongings'

Yurddle the Caretaker says 'Here are some lists of items that have been stolen from the crypts of the mausoleum in the past. You may bring each crypts set of four missing items to me separately. It is not necessary to find all three sets of items before returning but any set you do return must be complete to please the spirits. Perhaps you should ask around the shops in the other cities of Luclin if the merchants there have seen the missing items.'

You receive a List of Stolen Items.

was the quest really NERFED?
# Jan 16 2002 at 3:44 PM Rating: Default
I have heard from a few that the quest isn't nerfed, rather it just gives the sword SOMETIMES - like one out of five or so. I seriously doubt this is true since its been nerfed for two weeks and no one has posted anything about this. Can someone confirm this?

Thanks

The quest for the longsword is definitely gone. Turn in the items that used to give you the longsword and you now get the Scimitar of Ethereal Energy. Not quite as good as the longsword, but still a decent weapon. People who disagree with that statement need to consider that not everyone is a tank trying to hit for as much damage as possible as quickly as possible.

The only way to get the Longsword of Ethereal Energy now is to purchase one from someone on your server.

This is what Magelo has listed for it:

Scimitar of Ethereal Energy
MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM
Slot: PRIMARY SECONDARY
Skill: 1H Slashing Atk Delay: 29
DMG: 11 AC: 5
STR: -5 DEX: +12 STA: -5 SV MAGIC: +10
WT: 2.0 Size: MEDIUM
Class: WAR PAL RNG SHD BRD ROG
Race: ALL

But as far as i know, Magelo still doesn't recognize magic/fire/cold/disease/poison/bane damage on weapons, or skill mods, so i would assume this has the same +2% divination & some magic damage.

I went to katta to see with my own eyes that the Yurddle the Caretaker was not up anymore. Yurddle the Caretaker was indeed up. I handed in the items for the Long Sword of Ethereal Energy. The new reward is Scimitar of ethereal energy. Exactly the same as swords stats but its 11/29 and 5ac instead of 15.

Dang!

Never in my life have I read so many ingorant posts on one item!

Farming is a part of eq, live with it or quit the game...simple! 90% of every player will farm in some point of their eqlife, so dont go around and flame ppl for farming. If it wasnt for farmers the prices for a lot of items would be insanely high and most unpayable.
And dont judge a farmer, look at it this way, if you get an inside scoop wouldn't you be the one thats stupid if you didn't take advantage of your knowledge?
The 10% that doesnt farm are the ones that are not able to farm (yet)aka the ppl flaming farmers.

Stop whining about the nerf of this quest please!
The sword was too powerfull. I did the quest twice and still have the 2 swords on my twinks (...yes I DO TWINK flame me for all i care I earned the right to twink, It takes dedication to at least one char to be able to twink another, and at some point I believe that you should be able to use your money as you see fit). The next action concerning the LoEE Verant needs to do is to change all the Longswords of ethereal energy to Scimitars of ethereal energy (too bad for us "farmers" but hey you win some and you lose some). Because I do agree that the Centi LS and LoEE screws up the economy on a lot of other great 1 hs weaps.

Before you start to light up the flames, take a minute to think. How many angry posts did you see about this quest before the nerf? Now ppl are complaining for just one reason.....they didnt get one before it was too late! To bad (whine)

well this was from the top of my head, so maybe some of it doesnt make sence, but hey! Does it really need to?

NiColaden 59th Farmer
Kamilladen 53rd twink
Rhaambuk 25th twink
Kamilla 31st twink
Cheapstuff 41st twink

ok, fire at will!!

Wouldn't it just make more sense to make them NO DROP? Seriously though...the few of them that are out there won't amount to a hill of beans as far as the economy is concerned. You have to remember that the number of these items is static or deteriorating, as people quit or get banned or whatever, so the price on them will stay static as well, once a firm price is established.
RE: Kindergarten!
# Jan 14 2002 at 11:51 AM Rating: Good
Mostly agree with you.

I farm things occaisonally, there is not better or faster way to make fast cash than to do so. If you need 50k fast can you honestly tell me you would go kill hill giants for the cash. I dont think so. The only real downside to farming is that people that accually need the item for themselves and want to fight for their item instead of buying it have to wait in line, but thats life.

Twinking, heck most people that do twink only put on armors and weapons that alot of people would just as soon destroy. Most people just assume this is cheating because they either refuse to or cant do it. So what, what one person does with items and cash that THEY EARN is none of someone elses business.

As for the accually nerf. I garontee theres not an oldtimer out there that plays regularly that didnt see this comming. the LSoEE was/is better than almost ALL the recorded paladin and SK 1h weapons, granted there are alot of better weapons out of ToV but how many people accually get to go there. I truly think that the LSoEE accually threw pallies and SKs way out of the dmg tables. Being that the 2 classes are ment to do about 3/4 the dmg of a warrior. A warrior with a LSoEE and a centi LS, or jagged blade of mourning an do 3 or 4 times the dmg as a pally or SK with any decent weapon.

Sory for kinda wondering off track but its kinda an explaation of why the nerf had nothing to do with farmers.

Some interesting points here.

Farming has its good points and bad.
A good point: It puts on the market and make available items that some people would not normally be able to obtain - what else are you going to use all those PP that you have been hoarding except to buy an item you cant get yourself.
A bad point: Farmers often clean out an area (that they get no exp for) and ruin the game for those who were there for exp AS WELL as the items concerned. Even to the point of KSing and camp stealing - this does happen frequently.

I find it interesting that you think the sword was too powerful I was only interested in getting it because of the AC on it. Otherwise it is has a worse damage ratio and stats (except the dex of course) on it than the weapon I have been using since lvl 35 as my prime weapon and still using(I am now 52). I would not have wanted to do the quest if my AC wasnt so bad.

With the current quest reward I would think that a very small percentage of people would want to do it. A weapon which has the same dange ratio as a crystalised sword (easily obtainable of a mob for a mid 30s) with NEGATIVE stats which depending on what is important to you could quite easily cancel out the positive stats. Few below 50 would be able to do this quest. A better solution would have been to just make it no drop.

As for ******** the economy up, you could argue that that is the case for every new item that goes on the market. I believe there used to be a time when SSoY (Short Sword of Yekesa? - I admit I can spell to save my life) used to be considered the uber 1HS.

Finally before you give those of us who have not been able to obtain this item "the finger" saying it was our fault for not being off the mark quick enough consider this: I upgraded my PC before LUCLIN - Hardware,(new sound card, graphics card, memory) so that I was WAY over configured to run LUCLIN. I put on all the recommended drivers. Yet I have not even been able to get into EQ until the last week. Now I can get in but the bugs are so numerous that I am about 25% effective. Essentially I log in and can do nothing else. In other words I have not even been able to have the opertunity to get this item. So comments about about complaining because I was too late to do it are somewaht insensitive. What I find EXTREMELY annoying is that Verant is now focussing on "tweaking" the game and not on getting the remainder of us back into the game.

I disagree about the difficulty of doing this quest. I'm a 55 rogue and I did it by myself. Anyone in their 40s could to three of the four parts while group hunting or while passing through, and could get Ebben with two friends to heal. Heck...three of the four mobs were so green that they didn't do a half blue of dmg to me (with my huge 1500 hp).

WELL lets tell it straight this weapon was to good in reward efort ratio. Consider it a bonus to the quick and the lucky. But stop whining there is still a lot to explore.

Valeren cleric 54 ( not using one)

come on V stop messing around i can understand that you had to do something but its just a normal rusty scimitar graphic i missed the long sword, **** happens but be fair nerf all the ones in the game if it was unfortunate for me who did the quest it should be unfair for all even if you got the sword b4 the nerf i had alll my parts for 4 days so in effect did the quest b4 nerf but dont have the item. b4 you all say if i had have made it b4 the caretaker had been depoped, i wouldnt have wanted them to nerf mine you are correct but i wasnt and now from this perspective think its only fair
RE: not even a nice graphic
# Jan 09 2002 at 7:31 PM Rating: Decent
Yeah that would be real fair to nerf the sword for people who already have it, people like my warrior who gave to a guildmate the item it replaced. And the guildmate gave away his sword that what i gave him replaced. EG u want me to be worse off than what i started with, my old sword was better than the scimitar, if they nerf the ones currently in game, what are they going to do give me my original sword back or leave me worse off than when i started. Truth is the quest should have never been put in the game and whoever put it in should have known better.
Sucks, but....
# Jan 09 2002 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
Allright, I started this quest solo with my level 47 ranger. It took me approximately 2 hrs to gather all the components and head to Katta to turn them in. Turns out I was about a day too late, and missed out on the Longsword due to the nerf.
Now, I really hate that I missed out on such a great weapon. I really really hate it.
But...a nerf really had to be done. I mean, come on, the weapon was insanely awesome for the difficulty to attain.
However...Verant really screwed us with how they handled the nerf. 1. they should have informed us of an impending nerf so we could have stopped working on the quest. 2. this new weapon BLOWS!!! The nerfed sword should have been in between the longsword and the scimmy in stats IMO. NO ONE that is capable of doing this quest wants this sword, trust me.

PS. I dont know how a 51 war and 45 bard could have had difficulty with Ebben...my 47 Ranger wasted him using melee only.

I for one am not suprised that it was nerfed. Its been floating around on alot of the boards that it would be. This weapon was stronger than alot of epics out there for a day worth of work. Granted it sucks it would have been nice to twink my level one warrior with it but come on, look at the stats, then compare what you have to do to get the weapon. No one who could use this weapon would go after their epic afterwards. Wouldn't need to. What hurt this weapon the most is the fact duel wielding classes could wield it, their damage output skyrocketed. If there was a nerf it should have been retoactive change to eliminate some classes from using it, rangers, bards, warriors and rogues. Or perhaps make it no drop, that would really cheese all the farmers out there... god I hate droods... I mean farmers. Or finally make it a 2hs called the Greatsword of Etheral Energy.

Could we please dispense with the childish class-bashing? I used my druid to get this item for my warrior (who is high level btw, and actually needed a weapon upgrade!). Did the quest once, never again. While waiting in line for Maricella, I was behind a ranger who was doing it for the THIRD time, as he sold the previous two.

Pretty fekking lame that you whine about farming the item...when about two sentences before you talked about wanting to give it to a level ONE warrior for crissakes. Uh, that is pretty much the definition of farming...camping something that you don't intend to use as your main. Blabbing about giving it to a level one character and then ******** about druids farming it paints you a pretty fair idiot.

Anyway, people soloing and farming items are far less obnoxious then a few tanks I know who scream "NBG!" everytime some piece of junk weapon drops that they wouldn't even consider using. Ninety percent of tanks don't engage in this behavior though, so I'd never type a whole group by the perfomance of a few.

Oh my....you mean some people don't like druids? Smiley: yikes

Bah! It is amazing how when one looks for a port, or wants a bit of PLing, or wants buffs, or wants...heck any other number of things they look to those druids they don't like. Pure envy as I see it. Yes we track, yes we kill mobs solo, quickly, and efficently, yes we have the ablility to farm very well (among SEVERAL other classes). And yes, when people are rude we don't tend to be helpful.

Oh well, hurt though I may be, I will survive to further my lvl 55, oh so useful druid. Smiley: wink2

I agree with the new postings. I did this quest, barely, with a 51 warrior and a 45 bard. We killed Ebben with only 10 percent health life remaining on both of us.

We tip-toed through fungus grove thanks to the invis and levi of the bard. As most of you know, Ebben is the hardest part of the quest.

Now, I got the items, the quest is broke. :(

There is a patch, the quest is fixed! :-)

Do I get the Long sword for my warrior? HELL NO! I get a piece of crap, that is barely better than Icetooth's claws.

I didn't work my way up to the 50+ level to be able to quest JUNK!

Lol you had trouble doing this with a bard there? someones not playing the bard right then.. Easy solution, get the bard sowed in the bazaar, haul butt to fungus, pull Ebben and dot kite his butt around the town, if you are quick, you won't take ANY damage... This entire quest was easily soloable to my 46 bard and the exp was nice... Thats why it got nerfed, risk vs reward was WAY off :/ I quested both the LSEE and the Scimitar to use in my offhand until I finish my epic... I wish I had finished the quest the second time a bit faster so my pally would have one, but oh well, nerf was needed :(

I was myself about 2 hours too late on the Drinal sever and did not get mine as I was going to use for my Ranger...The AC alone would have been nice...Had to love the reply I got from from GM when asking what happened to guy....
GM="He's on vacation,have a nice day"
My only thought now is,if this thing is a Scimitar then how come Druids can't weild this???LOL....
I think I will still finish this Quest ,but instead of keeping it I'm gonna run to Qeynos and put it on a Decaying skeleton...Might make someone happy :):)

I spent countless hours (34 Paludal spawns before Maricella coughed up the dagger) collecting the pieces before heading to Katta last night before the patch. To my consternation and the surprise of the other 5 people wandering around, Yurddle wasn't up. According to the folks there, he had always been up before. Well, I camped and decided to see if Yurddle would respawn with the servers coming up... and he did, but... NERF!

The new reward for the Raien Taliker's Crypt portion of the quest is:

WOOT, Way to Go!!!,(Or should I say Give me a break) So let me get this straight, Now because Greedy Farmers were getting a ton of these and selling for 5K, They Take the Item out of the game and make the ones the farmers did get worth 20K....Come on...Who's making out on this deal. As I agree NO DROP, isn't the best solution all of the time, if they had to do something, It seems to me, making them all NO DROP, there by making the Farmers who couldn't use it destroy any extra's and still allowing the ones who could use it get a nice upgrade. Even if they did let their twinks loot, the major farming would stop.

I showed up the morning Yurddle Poofed. Imagine how much I wish I would have been a day sooner.

This is the problem with Veriant. They Fxxk you over without realising it. Yes they take out the quest giver without telling us so we can go and quest for from JUNK! WTF are they???

I mean who would waste their time going after this piece of shxt when they can just go to GD and get the icetooth claws. And on the other hand save themselves from buying SOL.

I know a friend who brought SoL just for this weapon and now they are getting fxxked over.
RE: NERF! NERF! NERF! NERF!
# Jan 08 2002 at 6:03 PM Rating: Decent
What? Why would you want Icetooth's Claws? An 11/29 Primary ONLY weapon?!?

This is essentially a 16/29 weapon with 5ac 12dex and 10svm, that goes in either primary or secondary. Sure, it's not as good as the LSoEE, but it sure beats the hell out of Icetooth's Claws.

11 / 29 with a 5 magic bonus doesn't seem to make it a 16 / 29. its more like a 11 / 29 and add 5 after modified damage from strength and level, etc.

My rogue can hit for high 50tys with a bloodpoint, 10 damage, he certainly does not hit for over 110 with the LSoEE. Closer to 90s as high.
RE: NERF! NERF! NERF! NERF!
# Jan 18 2002 at 1:30 AM Rating: Decent
Actually, experience has shown me hitting at about 4 times the base damage of whatever weapon I'm using, plus the level based damage bonus (at 52). I've hit for 94 with this sword, which is about 4 times the base 21 damage plus the damage bonus . . . therefore, in my experience, this weapon is essentially a 16 21 thats usually acting like a 21 29 . . .
RE: NERF! NERF! NERF! NERF!
# Jan 09 2002 at 1:18 PM Rating: Decent
It is closer to 16/29 than ya think when that magic bonus works.

I went ahead and finished this quest anyway to get the nerfed scimitar, and my warrior averages 40 - 60 damage and a max crit of 99 in the off-hand with this nerfed version. And that is on a 39 gnome warrior with only 160 str.

Still a pretty good weapon, but no where near as good as the version Verant screwed us out of, and now prolly even MORE farmable since this EE weapon can be dual-wielded with the LoEE to double the stats, resists, and AC. Granted, they are too slow to be your main tank's weapons, but rangers, bards, and assist tanks ... great combo.

Still expect to see the same people farming these that you saw there before the nerf. They've got an LoEE on every alt they have and this just gives em another very nice weapon to stash in a mule's bag to sell later on.

Great work, Verant. You didn't fix sh*t ... as usual

As I understand it a new scimitar is the quest item now, not nearly as good but more along the lines of what the quest is designed for. I feel for people who have done the quest for this sword and get a lesser version, but lets face it, when something is tradeable and this easy to get it's not so much an "unbalancing the game" issue as it is a "everyone running around with the same sword" issue. There are a multitude of weapons out there of various difficulties to get, but this sword is like a shortcut to the top. If they leave it tradable then imagine to huge economic problems that will occur.

For example, EVERY 1hs sword in the game will drop to 10% of it's current value with a month. Lammys going for 500 plat, which sounds good on the surface, unless you want to sell your lammies! If you don't beleive me just ask yourself, if I looted a Polished Granite tomahawk (that went for 100o plat at one time) would I keep it or give it to some necros pet? It's a pet wepapon no because it isn't worth the time to sell it.

So, would I like a blade like this....hell yes, but deep down I know the problems that it would cause to the game overall and I would rather see a lot of people running around in the game with different weapons then all of them having this blade

If they want to stop the quest, break one of the damn pieces of it....letting the people that had all four pieces complete it!!

It is an insanely easy quest for the reward, I agree something should be changed, but having gotten the 4 parts to Katta a couple days ago I was pretty discouraged with their answer.

Nodrop would be nice, tho there are already so many on Vallon Zek its insane...only thing more plentiful these days are the centi longswords, but that's another rant

# Jan 08 2002 at 4:20 AM Rating: Decent
I went out and collected the 4 parts for the sword. (34 spawns in Paludal before Maricella dropped the dagger <shudder>) However, I went to Katta, found the church (/loc n600 x n1500) and Yurddle wasn't up. In the 15min I was there, 3 other ppl walked in asking what happened to Yurddle.

This quest may have been nerfed :(

I just sold mine the other day, since I had all the items to make another, and lo and behold they nerfed the quest. I'm pissed as hell, but honestly I'm not too surprised. The weapon is 16/29, which by itself is a VERY nice weapon, but add 15ac, 10SvM, and 5 magic dmg, and this weapon becomes INSANELY good. Better than a fair number of ToV drops, but it comes from a quest that can be solo'd in a single night. I'm mad I don't have one any more, but I have admit the rewards vs. risk was COMPLETELY broken on this quest. people need to stop whining, just because THEY don't have UBER gear. the quality of your gear doesn't effect your ability to lvl. and the quality of your gear doesn't become really important till post 50. I know lvl 54 clerics in full sets of the old Ro quest armour, and they do just fine. You didn't get one of these fine items, oh well. go get yourself a Yak or some other weapon. They're all very effective in the long run.

"people need to stop whining, just because THEY don't have UBER gear. the quality of your gear doesn't effect your ability to lvl. and the quality of your gear doesn't become really important till post 50."

Oh, really? How well do you think you woulda done back at 45 with just a suit of banded armor and 2 fine steel long swords, my friend. Gear makes ALOT of difference in how fast you level.

Why the hell do you think people farm things and twink in the first place?
(or farm items just to sell for profit, like some who seem to post here)

I myself will still prolly go after the scimitar if I can. The +10 magic resist and 5AC +12 dex are still nice for a struggling gnome warrior to fill in some weak spots and allow me to ditch some stat gear for better AC. Sure am upset to miss my chance at the longsword, but oh well ... EQ life's a bi*ch ( and I'll be damned if I am gonna reward farmers by paying the, what is sure to become, outrageous price for the long sword )
Screwed again !!

All hail the wisdom of Verant !!!

I sat for damned near 5 hours waiting to get the drops for this quest, too. Heard the nerf talk and asked about it when I got to KC. Am now sitting on 4 no drop quest pieces that are prolly gonna be worthless after tonight's patch.

Why does VI seem to think that going NO DROP is the only solution to farming? If they would just slower the drop rates to a point where it is not worth the time to farm it. Or put the quest pieces on trivial code, even. At least that way the people who actually NEED this weapon can have a chance to get it.

Nerfing quests and ******** mid-level players seems to be a hobby for VI. They need to find a way to stop the farming without ******** the people that are getting screwed by farmers to begin with.

Also, is this weapon SO uber that it needs to be controlled like this anyway? Can't really think of a situation where a LORE 16/29 weapon is gonna bring down the Sleeper or ToV and unbalance the game. NOT GONNA HAPPEN GUYS ! Get a grip, PLEASE!

Sorry for the rant, but this particular nerf issue really chaps my a$$.

Don't mean as a flame or anything, but what do you imply is wrong with NO DROP if indeed you are trying to limit/prevent farming? The only real argument against NO DROP that I can really think of would be people that want to sell/trade the blade. I would love this blade and If I believed for a second that Yurddle is coming back with nothing changed except a NO DROP blade, I'd be a happy halfling.

The alternatives of lowering spawn rate/increasing difficulty of encounters does little to counter farming. (Though they may go a ways towards balancing the risk vs reward on this incredible blade.)
RE: Screwed again !!
# Jan 07 2002 at 11:11 PM Rating: Decent
Well, you're right, my apologies. I guess I was on more of a rant than I thought I was. :)

Making an item NO DROP does pretty much stop farming for profit. I guess my real problem is just the fact that with all the problems in the game (bugs, broken quests, etc. ), I find it very annoying to see VI wasting time on such a relatively small issue that has no real impact on game balance ... except for the fact that this item is farmed.

I could understand if it was an overpowered or bugged item; and players were wreaking havoc throughout the lands while wielding it; but this sword still takes alot of time and patience to obtain and is very, very nice; but it is by no means an unbalanced weapon, no matter how many players have one.

It seems to me that there are far more pressing issues to be dealt with in EQ to better the game for everyone than wasting our AND their time on things like this. All it does is irritate alot of people and make the general community more upset with the way things are handled in Everquest.
Ack, No Yurddle
# Jan 06 2002 at 6:45 PM Rating: Decent
I myself got all 4 no drop items for the SSOE. And low and behold, no Yurddle the Caretaker. Sent out a shout to the KC zone and someone said they nerfed the quest. Ok, I understand this is an easy quest...but don't kill it. This is BS. If Verant is concerned that high levels are just going to farm the items. Just make the Weapon a No Drop. I myself need a weapon Upgrade and this item would be great for me as a Secondary weapon. Hope they bring it back for the next patch. I stopped leveling for several days just group w/ my guildies and do this quest. If the Ghosts are still in the mausoleum at the cemetary, we didn't see them w/ See Inv. Tried to pull the corpses in the graveyard. after camping a few hours we gave up and returned to Norrath.

You are what is wrong with the game. Sell it for
what it is worth. I hope verant makes it so that everyone can have one so that your item is only
worth 2cp :p

And Verant. Don't tell me that you can't reset
the zone. Your GM's are telling us that it is broken. RESET THE ZONES. Don't BS us. Tell us that you are nerfing it. Be more up front.

RE: Nerfed!
# Jan 07 2002 at 12:45 PM Rating: Default
Absolutely right. Farmers suck big time. All they do is jack up prices and hold camps and keep the people who need/can use an item cannot obtain it. Also, they exploit the ease of some quests and CAUSE these nerfs that ***** everyone else and really only end up making them even MORE because a nerfed item you could get in 1 day that now takes a week is gonna be worth at least 2x what they were farming and selling it for in the first place.

My warrior would LOVE this sword, but I prolly won't get it now that the farmers have screwed it for everyone again !!

Also, I agree with you about resets. They seem to have no problem resetting the zones when they want to. Why would they even say they couldn't when EVERYONE knows they can do so whenever they want. Be honest VI .... stop jerkin' us around and rewarding high-levs for their infractions and exploitations
