You say, 'Hail, Rallic Aristos'

Rallic Aristos says 'Well met Daias! I am Rallic Aristos, Governor of trade and economy here in Katta Castellum. I know it sounds like a lot of parchment pushing and coin counting but maintaining good trade relations with the various Houses of Shadow Haven and the haggling Vah Shir of Shar Vahl is not as easy at it may sound. Then there is the issue of the [acrylia mines] in the Tenebrous Mountains.'

You say, 'What acrylia mines?'

Rallic Aristos says 'The Tenebrous Mountains are rich with veins of the valuable acrylia ore. Unfortunately the mines were dug and controlled by a tribe of savage grimlings from the forests to the south. Negotiations have been attempted with the grimlings but to no avail. Several of the other governors and I have been developing a [plan] to take the mines or establish mines of our own. In either case the mines will have to be defended from attacks by the grimlings unless when placed in that predicament they finally resort to trade negotiations.'

You say, 'What plan?'

Rallic Aristos says 'The full plans are not at my disposal but one of my concerns that may be instrumental in our success is the acquisition of grimling documents carried by a grimling courier who is seen frequently running from the forest to the mines. If one of the Validus Custodus attempts to obtain the runners pouch the grimlings will surely retaliate, if adventurers like yourselves obtained it however and quietly delivered it to me we may be able to move forward with our plans.'

The grimling runner is found on the southern side of the zone. He drops a pack (LORE) which you turn into Rallic Aristos in Katta.

Rallic Aristos says 'Excellent, the contents of the pouch shall be examined immediately. Take this pattern for a crafting a pack that will be sure to lighten the burden of its contents. I'm afraid I do not have the rest of the [required materials] at hand.'

Your faction standing with Concilium Universus got better.
Your faction standing with Seru got worse.
Your faction standing with Heart of Seru got worse.
You gain party experience!!

You receive a Rallic Pack Pattern.

You say, 'What required materials?'

Rallic Aristos says 'In addition to the pattern you will need to acquire a Perfect Owlbear Pelt, Shade Silk Thread, and a Shade Silk Cord. You may use any loom or large tailoring kit to craft the pack.'

Combine the Rallic Pattern (LORE), a shade silk thread (2 shadeling silks combined), a shade silk cord (3 shade silk threads combined), and a Perfect owlbear pelt (drops off higher level Owlbears) in a sewing kit to receive your Rallic Pack.

Are you an Iksar Monk, like myself, who is KOS to Katta and doesn't want to do a bunch of factioning in SSeru? Well then, just invis or FD flop your way through Katta and FD yourself right behind Rallic, then wait for the enemies have forgotten you message just to be careful. Now you should be FD'd BEHIND Rallic and across from that other NPC in the room. To do turn in, hit Sneak BEFORE you stand up, then stand up and hand in the bag as quick as you can. The NPC across the room DID aggro me, and in turn Rallic aggroed me, but I was still able to do the turn in before that because there should be about a 2 second window before that happens where you need to do the turn in.

Edit:

Ok, did it again a few hours after the first time and confirmed that this method works. However, it did take two tries this because I got aggro before I could complete turn in, so he gave the pack back to me and started beating on me. I just FD'd and waited for aggro to clear and did it again and it worked. Again, just FD behind Rallic, wait for aggro to clear if you have any, then hit sneak and stand up behind him and give him pack as quickly as you can. May have to have pack in your hand before you stand up so you can do it as quickly as possible.

Third time doing it today, and it took three tries this time (see the pattern, lol?) I might have got lucky the first time cause it's a bit tricky to turn in before getting aggro, but it's not too difficult and I have gotten the rallic pattern every time. Sorry for all the edits.

Any idea where the owlbears have gone?
I roamed around Hollowshade for a good 20 min and didn't see one. Also, the cave they used to be at is occupied by grimlings. I remembers a war years ago drove the owlbears out of their cave (right?), but where did they all go?

This will happen from time to time, it just means someone has started the Hollowshade War. People typically do this to bring up Sonic Wolves or Owlbears in the south area, to farm them for smithing skill-ups. It will end when the server re-sets, OR someone manipulates the invasions until all 3 camps have the same creature type. Once that happens, the tent camp outside SV will change to that creature type also... then a Boss will pop there, kill him and the whole zone re-sets to its original form with Owlbears in the north, grimlings in the south, and wolves in the east.

When you zone in from TM, he is in the building/castle to the right that is surrounded by the green hedges and has the garden in front. Go in the HUGE doors. Take a left down the hall off the red carpet main hall. Turn left again at the first hallway on your left and left again at the T intersection. Immediately on your left is a door to the room that he is located in. (100,40)

I am 45 Zerker but have been farming here for 10 levels. For Zerks, the runner is easy. Just pull him with axes. Melee on the little prick. It's better if u pullhim with another NPC as the runner won't run and u concentrate on him. If u of good nature, Rallic (in K C ) will accept the pouch and give u the pattern. I sell packs in baz or sell in POK for 1k firm. Always sells as its a great pack. The acrylia ore u farm sells at the going rate in baz. A good money maker too. FYI u cant hold the runner as he is immune and will try to escape. And he backstabs. Also stay away from th castle of vampires as it is hi level. You can take bats but anything else is iffy. At 45 I take sonic wolves ok.

I just did the turn-in of the Grimling Runner Pouch to Rallic (thanks to all the wonderful directions!). Everyone in zone was INDIFFERENT to me, and when I went to talk to Rallic, he completely ignored me. I decided to give him the pouch anyways as it was really easy for me to get as a 58th BST. The turn-in went fine, he gave me the pouch... and I was on my way.

The funny thing is, as I left the zone and entered TM, I realized I was still invis'd from my run to Rallic! LOL! I often invis myself when running errands just to stop the occassional agro from wandering mobs... so I was invis the whole time, the turn-in worked, and I have no idea what my actual faction with them was and whether I would have been KoS to any of them.

Hope this little trick helps...

You will always con Indifferent to an NPC or Mob if you "consider" them while invisible or camoflaged...they cannot see you ...if you get any other result while invisible it means the mob/npc can see thru invis..comes in handy if you exploring or soloing

i'm a 41 bst and i make my living off the runner. i camp in tenebrous every night before i log to see if hes up. i kill him on average 2 times a day. he's a cinch. my doggie takes him down with minimal help from me. i hit him with dot then train him back to cave when he gets passed me at entrance. then i sick doggie on him and nuke him and let doggie have his way. when hes below 20% he runs in which case i go in and help finish the job, if there are any aggro mobs in the area i let doggie take him down completely since they wont aggro on him. if you miss him or are not sure if hes up simply sit in fornt of cave entrance and look northwest toward the tree and boulder, his path takes him to the 2nd grimling cave then back to that boulder. he walks right in front of you so there is no reason to leave the cave. pull him in finish him off before he gets out and voala done. now getting to katta through all the mobs thats fun but i got sow and lev so i make like ET and fly there occasionally training mobs but with sow they aint catching me anytime soon :). good luck all and good hunting. :D

Necro trap
# Jan 13 2004 at 8:49 PM Rating: Default
This guy...this ZONE...is really no fun for necromancers.

It's in the middle of nowhere. Nothing snares. Everything sees through invis. Some stuff is even immune to fear.

Do yourself a favor; stick with a good XP & cash-camp somewhere less sucking, and simply buy the stupid pack when you're uber.

Lots of misinformation in Candarae's post, particularly his "nothing snares" in this zone statement. Rather than trust his much too broad claims, look up the specific mob(s) that you're interested in. In general, in Tenebrous Mountains there are a few key lower level mobs that do not snare, including the grimling runner and most of the bats. Many, but not all, mobs do see through invis. Necros of sufficient level will find good hunting here soloing the vamps. The higher level named vamps in the castle are frequently solo camped by level 65 necros.

Mid-level necros (and other classes) attempting to solo the grimling runner will probably want to engage him at his spawn spot in the cave. Even if he runs outside, there are few adds in the area just outside the cave entrance, and the mobs that are there are among the lowest level in the zone.

Rallic won't take the pack
# Dec 10 2003 at 12:09 AM Rating: Default
I did this quest yesterday no problem, but today Rallic won't take the pack. He says, " I have no need of that item." and gives it back to me.

I haven't changed faction at all (still indifferent), or even killed anything anywhere near Katta.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Myst

Easy kill for lvl 34 druid

I was lucky enough to come to this forum before I went in search of the Grimling runner because root is my mainstay spell and I wasn't sure if I could handle him without it working. Originally I went all buffed by a higher lvl with an extra 300 HP, scared he would wipe the floor with me otherwise, but alas he didn't spawn right away and the buff left. I Got scared and zoned out. Went back shortly after, deciding to brave it on my own thinking "if I get near death i will run to zone" I saw him from a distance coming back to the spawn point in tunnel so I got off a good Dot first, then just meleed and Nuked him to death. He didn't interupt any spells but he did try to get behind me (to backstab me I am sure) But thanks to everyone here giving fair warning about his backstab I turned quickly to face him. He did run when he was near death though, which counters other reports. But all and all an easy kill with my 34 druid with Kei. I had no other buffs on me except my own regeneration/skin like steel/barbcoat, but at the end of the fight I had 65% HP left, It was worth the risk and it is a GREAT pack.

Just a quick word. The runner can't be rooted or snared, but, he can be mezzed. Soloing him with a chanter is easy. Just mezz, nuke, let him hit you once and stun him (make sure to rune yourself), then start all over. This is coming from a 43 enchanter, I did it at 42 but I don't know how resistant he is to mezz at lower levels.

Just did runner exactly as stated here. I was lucky I guess zoned in and boom there he was... Didn't check my stats before I started in on him I mezzed and began Rune 3 wass up but I was still at 50% due to fall made on the trip. He never hurt me once and I only recast rune once, just to be sure.

I've completed this quest with a few other characters but for my iksar monk it just isn't worth it. At level 35, soloing the runner wasn't very hard. I would however recommend getting a friend to loot the pack and turn it in. The pattern is droppable so you can do the rest of the quest after your friend does the pack turn in, cuz Rallic hates Iksar and his girlfriend on the other side of the room is level 62 and hates iksar even worse! I read the post about chain hailing from across the room and can't tell you for certain that won't work, but I can confirm the following 2 ways to die.
1. Invis, get behind Rallic, hit sneak, drop invis ....... he conned indifferent, I didn't hail him. He only hits for 80 to 100 but his girlfriend popped me 500 plus. Dead before I could FD.
2. Bought an essence of gnome potion (cuz my 41 gnome wizzy has no problem with this quest, despite not being able to solo the snare/root resistant runner). I should have known this wasn't going to work when the outer guards hated me, even in gnome form, but I made it into the room. Girlfriend still having a bad day.... FD, let her go back to her spot. Got behind Rallic finally... same outcome.
This is EASY!

I really wanted to wait to see if I could get a shaman friend of mine to tag along before I attempted this quest, but since i'm a bit impatient I figured I'd try it out.

First stop was eqatlas.com to print out maps going from shar vahl to tenebrous mountains, so I wouldn't get lost.

Roughly 15 minutes of running later, I was in TM, but I had no idea where I was supposed to wait. I asked a few guildmates, and they said in spawns in the middle of the cave that has the zoneline to grimling forest. So I looked around for a bit to find a place to wait, and sat down.

90 minutes later, he popped. A bit freaked out since I wasn't sure I could solo him, I pulled him as close as I could to the zoneline so I could run incase of trouble....

Then I killed him. It was super easy with the equipments I have, and hes not much harder then the other grimlings in the zone, and infact the grimlings in grimling forest are harder. If you can solo a sonic wolf, then the runner will be super easy for you.

Just so you know, hes immune to speed changing spells, so if your a caster class it may be a little difficult for you, but you should still be able to do it.
The Runner

I camped the runner 4 times today, and they were all successful. This was my first time doing this. Im a 45 bard, so i just charmed the closest dire sonic wolf, and it just totally destroyed the runner. Much easier than i thought :)

Was wondering if a levl 31 druid could take on the runner. I was planning on getting a Kei of course and maybe a Aego if i can. But Aego doesnt matter. I've taken out a yellow once without be able to change speed but that was like at 22 or so and it was in East karrana. Jus wondering here, cus if i can, im going Mammoth hunting :) Ok well thanx for any help.

I wouldn't say easy as the runner is immune to speed altering spells. So you have to DOT from the word go and stay out of range. Then pray the dot doesn't drop too soon and that you can get just enough range to cast another one off but NEVER stop with your back to him. He is a rogue and will backstab you and at 31 you could find yourself in trouble fast if he gets a couple solid backstabs in.

You might want to get up a couple more levels just to give you a better edge. Head over to Dawnshroud Peaks for the killer druid/ranger friendly exp-fest. You'll be up to par with the runner in no time and with a batch of new spells if you wait for lvl 34

Mammoths would be a sinch at 31. Girmling Runner easy. A druid can kill almost anything with DoTs becuase they stick very often, you don't HAVE to have snare stick if you have sow. I myself have killed HGs at 31 and Stonegrabbers at 28. It takes a lot of time usually and you gotta have KEI but it can be done.

This guy is a runner - at 42 I cringe at the thought of running into him unprepared - cant root him, cant snare him, and he is fast. I can take him - I prefer Fury of Wind to at least stun him for a second, then dot and run unitl I can Fury him again - TM is NOT a good zone for a lvl 31 to try too m uch kiting in tho- you'll end up with a train in no time. My advice to mid lvl - approach this guy with extreme caution, or a good meat shield.
