This is the 10th and final Coldain Ring Quest.

Overview: This is a large encounter that requires a fair amount of players to complete. It involves multiple waves of giants of different levels attempting to overrun Thurgadin. You must kill the giants and the final giant in the war, Narandi the Wretched.

Once you have the 9th Ring and the Dirk of the Dain, you hand the Dirk to Dain Frostreaver IV in Icewell keep.

Tips:

* Use a ranger or other tracker to make this easier. The waves of giants spawn as a cluster in a random location, a tracker can see when they spawn and hunt them down and kill them and make sure there are no stragglers.

* Zrelik the Scout is kind of like a charmed pet who follows you around and you can relay troop commands through him. Do not invis or he will get angry and attack you. (My ranger has a habit of casting group invis when he starts to travel. Oops.) If that happens you can drop aggro, the Scout will continue to accept commands but he will no longer follow you. If the Scout dies, no big deal, but you can't command the troops anymore. I did not bother with troop commands anyway.

* During the two zone repops at the start and end of the event, your mount will poof if you are riding one. Pets poof temporarily but stay with you. Campfires and mercs are ok.

* Every giant drops a weapon. If you really like velium, you can save the Velium Two Handed Swords to convert to velium using a forge, there will be about 100 of these swords. The other giant weapons are not useful.

    Obtaining the Orders:

Dain Frostreaver IV says, 'My good ______, you have served me well. You have flushed out all who sought to oppose me and my people. I am afraid I need to call upon you and your friends one final time. The dissension and treason ran deeper than I had anticipated. Our population has been cleansed, but we lost a full third of our army to the poisonous words of those rebels. In retaliation for your deeds, the Kromrif have made plans to attack us in this, our weakest hour. Can I count on your help outlander?'

You say, 'You can count on my help.'

Dain Frostreaver IV says 'Several of our greatest officers, including a few veterans from the war on Yesterwinter are assembling just outside our city. Gather your army at once and give this parchment and the ninth ring to Sentry Badian. I will remain inside the city with a few of my troops to defend it against any who might penetrate your defense. May Brell be with you, ______.'

Dain Frostreaver IV gives you Declaration of War.

  1. Take the Declaration of War to Sentry Badain who is located in a guard tower in the Great Divide, at -1080, +140.

Hand Sentry Badain the declaration and Ring 9 to start the "WAR".

Sentry Badain Breathes deeply and blows into an ornate horn. The sound echoes through the mountain pass. All local inhabitants scurry to take cover.

Sentry Badain says 'I'll be right with you, _____.'

He and the other Coldain despawn. He reappears shortly.

Sentry Badain says 'Excellent! All of your commanders have reported to the Dain, and none too soon mind you. We are getting reports of Kromrif troop movement in the area and final preparations must be made. Follow me and the Seneschal will brief you.

  2. Follow him to a circle of dwarves that are in the middle of a conversation:

Garadain Glacierbane says 'With all due respect, Seneschal, I feel my men are best suited for the eastern post. If the outlander has rounded up enough soldiers to hold 'em off from the south then they'll definitely test us in the gorge. We'll be needin' a solid defense there.'

Seneschal Aldikar says 'Very well, Garadain, the eastern post is yours. I'll place Kargin and his bowmen on the hill to the west, and Churn, you'll station your troops up near the caves just past them.'

Churn the Axeman says 'Understood sir.'

Sentry Badain says 'Excuse me, Seneschal Aldikar, you instructed me to report to you when the outlander returned. I have brought him.'

Seneschal Aldikar says 'Perfect timing outlander, please be seated and listen carefully. Badain, yer dismissed.'

    Sentry Badain says 'Sir, yessir!'

Sentry Badain then walks off towards Thurgadin and despawns.

Seneschal Aldikar says 'We knew the day might come when the Kromrif would discover the location of our beloved city. It was only prudent for there to be a plan for such a circumstance. In light of recent developments, however, our plans have been adjusted. Outlander, the Dain has appointed you to lead our armies in defense of Thurgadin.'

Seneschal Aldikar says 'I will stand here with a handful of men as a final line of defense. Should I fall, all will be lost. You will have these men and their soldiers to command. Use them wisely, you will be richly rewarded if your forces are able to keep them alive.'

Seneschal Aldikar says 'Garadain will post his men in the gorge to the east. Churn and his men will await your command in the caves to the west. Dobbin will have his forces at the ready in the clearing directly south of here near the towers. If any Kromrif make it to his vicinity he and his men will attack with or without your command.'

Seneschal Aldikar says 'Lastly, Corbin will hide his men in the worm caves to the south, call on him for a surprise attack. Remember where these men are stationed, outlander. Should they call out for help you may wish to send some of your people to aid them.'

Seneschal Aldikar says 'The leader of this invasion is a powerful Kromrif named Narandi. Rumor has it that he is more powerful than any ten of his peers. He must fall. When he is slain you must show his head and the ninth ring to me.'

Seneschal Aldikar says 'Scout Zrelik here will follow you and serve as your herald. He will relay your orders to the troops. Show me your ninth ring now to verify your identity and I will give you the orders to memorize.'

  3. Give Seneschal Aldikar the ring. He gives it back along with an item called "Orders of Engagement."

Seneschal Aldikar says 'Commit these orders to memory, ______, have them ready to speak at a moment's notice. When you are finished memorizing, repeat them to me. Tell your soldiers to prepare themselves. When the orders are handed to Zrelik we will take up our positions.'

    The Orders read:

OFFICIAL COLDAIN ORDERS OF ENGAGEMENT: To call Garadain's men: "Garadain to my side!" To call Dobbin and his men: "Dobbin assist me!" To summon Churn's troops: "Churn protect me!" To call upon Corbin's team: "Corbin, attack!" Call all available troops: "For the Dain, attack!"

You should make hotkeys to turn off attack, target Zrelik and /say one of those commands to Zrelik the Scout.

    Triggering the War

  4. Give the Orders of Engagement to Zrelik.

Zrelik the Scout says 'At yer service, ______. Remember now, before issuing me an order ya must disengage from any combat and be sure yer speakin to me. I advise you to avoid combat at all costs, your leadership is crucial.'

00:00:00 - War timer begins when you hand your Orders of Engagement to Zrelik the Scout.

This begins the war. You'll see:

Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'Good citizens of Thurgadin, hear me! Our city, our people, our very lives are in danger this day. The Kromrif are at this very moment marching towards us in an offensive they hope will bring about our demise...'

Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'I hereby command, by authority of Dain Frostreaver the Fourth, that all able bodied Coldain fight to the death in defense of our land. Children, disabled citzens, and unseasoned travellers are advised to evacuate immediately!'

Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'My fellow soldiers, take heart! For we are not alone in this endeavor. One among us, an outlander, has earned the title Hero of the Dain for valiant service to our people. This newcomer has brought with him allies that will fight alongside you to help bring about our victory.'

Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'My friends... Brell did not place us here so many centuries ago to be slaughtered by these heathens. Nor did our forefather, Colin Dain, sacrifice himself simply to have us fail here now. Through these events we were brought to this day to test our strength and our faith.'

Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'Will we be shackled together to slave away in Kromrif mines or will we stand united and feed these beasts Coldain blades? By Brell, I promise you, it is better to die on our feet than to live on our knees!'

Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'TROOPS, TAKE YOUR POSITIONS!!'

The 6 dwarf leaders take up their positions:
Seneschal Aldikar -- (30, -110) north at entrance to Thurgadin behind waterfall, last line of defense
Dobbin Crossaxe and his troops -- (-1090, 0) south, between the sentry post and the creek
Corbin Blackwell and his troops -- (-2880, 100) further south, near wurm cave entrance
Kargin the Archer and his troops -- (-1095, 870) west of Dobbin
Churn the Axeman and his troops -- (-1070, 1545) further west of Dobbin
Garadain Glacierbane and his troops -- (-570, -1835) far east at monument

    Commands to Zrelik

These are the commands you can give to Zrelik the Scout:

You say, 'For the Dain, attack!'

Zrelik the Scout shouts 'All able Coldain, come to me at once!'

    You say, 'Churn protect me!'

Zrelik the Scout shouts 'Churn, get yer men and c'mere on the double! _____ needs ye!'

    You say, 'Corbin, attack!'

Zrelik the Scout shouts '_____ is in need of yer help Corbin. Bring yer men!'

    You say, 'Dobbin assist me!'

Dobbin Crossaxe closes his eyes and in a graceful motion, gives a low, sweeping bow, 'Greetings to you, friend, and welcome to the district of Selia. We are the beacon of light and justice, of all that is good and kind. As Tanaan is the cornerstone of neutrality, we are the shining jewel of righteousness, valor, and honor. I am Phantasmist Abaur and in my years upon Norrath, served as an enchanter within the arcane council of Freeport. Then, the city was in a fledgling state of being -- the Temple of Truth was still in the primordial beginnings of its construction and the city served solely as a port rather than the functioning metropolis I'm told it has come to be today. If you practice the same art and require aid in learning the fundamental basic skills, then I will be more than pleased to oblige that necessity.'

In the Event of a Loss

If any giant gets past you to the Thurgadin entrance, you lose. You'll know this has happened if you see that Zrelik is missing and the giants are lined up on both sides of the river to Thurgadin.

All of Thurgadin dies in the event of a loss. You'll see dead Coldain throughout the zone: A Gutted Guard, A Gored Guard, A Butchered Butcher, A Murdered Merchant, A Bludgeoned Banker, A Conquered Coldain, A Punctured Priestess, and A Perforated Priest.

    The War

  5. Once Seneschal Aldikar shouts for troops to take their positions, the battle begins.

00:01:50 - 2 lines of Kromrif Spearman spawn, to the SW (12), and SE (6). Leave them alone until after wave 1.

Waves of giants can spawn at one of five locations:
    West of the creek:
giant A -- 10 men + leader -- (-2545, 240) further south (north of Corbin Blackwell), march north along the creek toward Dobbin Crossaxe
giant B -- 10 men + leader -- (-2140, 900) SW, march NE at first, then turn and march NW toward Kargin the Archer
    giant C -- 10 men + leader -- (-2060, 930) SW, march NW toward Churn the Axeman
(B and C are close together)
    East of the creek:
giant D -- 6 men, no leader -- (-2100, -1100) SE in a valley, march east to the creek, then turn and run north toward Dobbin Crossaxe
giant E -- 6 men, no leader -- (-1900, -2700) further SE at spires, march north toward Garadain Glacierbane

Before the first wave, head south and watch over Corbin because he is still walking to his post when the giants spawn. After that first wave, Corbin and his troops don't see any more action.

Phase 1: Kromrif Captain and troops of giants
00:02:30 - giant wave 1 -- always spawns to the south at giant point A. Protect Corbin.
After defeating wave 1, clear out the 2 lines of giant spearmen on either side of the creek.
    00:05:35 - giant wave 2 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    00:08:55 - giant wave 3 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    00:12:05 - giant wave 4 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    00:15:20 - giant wave 5 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    00:18:35 - giant wave 6 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
00:21:50 - giant wave 7 -- double wave, two sets of giants at two different random locations

short break, rebuff then head south and wait

Phase 2: Kromrif General and troops of giants
00:30:45 - giant wave 8 -- always spawns to the south at giant point A
    00:35:40 - giant wave 9 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    00:40:30 - giant wave 10 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    00:45:25 - giant wave 11 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    00:50:15 - giant wave 12 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    00:54:45 - giant wave 13 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E

short break, rebuff then head south and wait

Phase 3: Kromrif Warlord and troops of giants
01:06:05 - giant wave 14 -- always spawns to the south at giant point A
    01:11:30 - giant wave 15 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    01:16:55 - giant wave 16 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    01:22:20 - giant wave 17 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E
    01:27:45 - giant wave 18 -- a random location at A, B, C, D, or E

01:33:00 - Narandi the Wretched -- spawns to the south at giant point A

Person with 9th ring loots Narandi's Head (and Narandi's Lance), and does turn-ins to the dwarf leaders to receive 10th ring and other rewards.

    Once he is dead:

Narandi the Wretched's corpse says 'Rallos! Please accept my soul... I pray that you may find me worthy.'

Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'Outlander! You've done it! The Kromrif invasion has been frustrated! Bring me the head of Narandi and your Hero's ring.'

    Turn-In for the 10th Ring

  6. Once you have won, turn in ring 9 and Narandi's head to Seneschal Aldikar to receive the 10th Coldain ring.

Seneschal Aldikar unsheathes a knife and shaves the beard from Narandi's face and returns the head to you, 'The Dain will require the beard for his trophy room, please accept this ring on his behalf. May its effect aid you as you have aided us. Be certain to present the ring to the Dain when you're in town. If you remain an ally he will be most gracious, but be warned, if you fall from his good graces he will keep the ring.'

Your faction standing with Coldain could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek could not possibly get any worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.

You receive the 10th ring and the Shorn Head of Narandi.

Additional Rewards

01:40:00 - Great Divide zone repops to end the event.

Be sure to visit the Dain in Icewell to receive your bonus reward.

Hand in the Shorn Head of Narandi to each of the dwarves near the Seneschal. This may only be possible if none of the dwarves die (need confirmation either way):

Churn the Axeman pries a crown from the head of Narandi, 'The halls of Thurgadin will echo with praises to you for as long as we grace the face of this land. May this crown serve you well. Honor through battle!'

You receive the Crown of Narandi.

Kargin the Archer picks up a stick and hits the back of the dismembered head with all his might, knocking one of its eyes out of the socket, 'Bastard killed my brother! Hope his ghost felt that one!'

You receive the Eye of Narandi.

Corbin Blackwell unhooks a glowing earring from Narandi's shorn head, 'Hmm, this looks like something special. Take it, ______, you've earned it! Be well.'

You receive an Earring of the Frozen Skull.

Dobbin Crossaxe gives a gentle, warm smile and slight nod of his head in warm welcoming, 'Good day to you, ______, and welcome to the district of Selia. We are children of the light -- beings who valiantly uphold the ways of honor, valor, and merits of goodly faith and virtue. Rather, we are crusaders of these things, collectively comprising the beacon of these traits within the universe in our position in New Tanaan. We are quite pleased to have you approach us with such confidence -- perhaps the inner light has brought you to us, seeking a way to unlock the purity of these merits that you faintly mirror now. If you are seeking council in the ways of enchantments, then I would be more than pleased and honored to aid you where I can, my friend.'

You receive the Faceguard of Bentos the Hero.

Garadain Glacierbane removes a choker from the severed head and returns both items to you, 'Congratulations on your victory, ______. I couldn't have done a better job myself. May Brell protect and watch over you and your friends. Farewell.'

You receive a Choker of the Wretched.

Make sure your faction is high enough (warmly or better? which faction?), then give the ring to the Dain in Icewell Keep:

Dain Frostreaver IV says '______, your deeds have changed the fate of my people forever. Not since the sacrifice of Colin Dain himself has anyone so selflessly risked so much for our well being. Accept this blessing as a token of my gratitude.'

You receive Protection of the Dain.

10th ring war

Tips:
* Use a ranger or other tracker to make this easier. The waves of giants spawn as a cluster in a random location, a tracker can see when they spawn and hunt them down and kill them and make sure there are no stragglers.

10th ring war

Tips:
* Use a ranger or other tracker to make this easier. The waves of giants spawn as a cluster in a random location, a tracker can see when they spawn and hunt them down and kill them and make sure there are no stragglers.

Dobbin dialogue

Something is a bit off with the quest dialogue here and it appears to be related to the logs GOMN posted. Dobbin is shown using dialogue from two different Plane of Knowledge NPCs ...

Quote:
Dobbin Crossaxe closes his eyes and in a graceful motion, gives a low, sweeping bow, 'Greetings to you, friend, and welcome to the district of Selia. We are the beacon of light and justice, of all that is good and kind. As Tanaan is the cornerstone of neutrality, we are the shining jewel of righteousness, valor, and honor. I am Phantasmist Abaur [...]

and

Quote:
Dobbin Crossaxe gives a gentle, warm smile and slight nod of his head in warm welcoming, 'Good day to you, ______, and welcome to the district of Selia. [...]

This was 8 years ago. Can anyone confirm that this is the dialogue Dobbin is truly using? I'll try to run the event if I can soon, but it's not soloable on Agnarr.

When you tell the scout "Dobbin assist me"
Dobbin Crossaxe shouts, 'Hold 'em off, outlander. We'll be right there!"
although it's more of a say than a shout, as you can't see his response unless he's nearby.

As for the second paragraph, yes Dobbin does say that line about the district of Selia, must be a EQ bug, maybe that item of text got its internal reference number crossed.

So i decided i wanted to get the 10th ring. I had never done the event and thought it would be kind of cool to try it. So i logged in characters on my 6 accounts and had 4 of them sit close to Thurg while i ran around with monk and druid killing other stuff. Right around 7pm est i got disconnected on every account. Tried to get back on but it wouldn't let me. Checked forums and other people said they also got disconnected and couldn't reconnect. I can't help but think i broke the game on every server by doing the event. Its either that or my luck is so completely rotten and i chose one of the worst possible times to try the event. This is on 1-7-2017. I play on the Cazic-Thule server.
So the servers were all up by 7:30pm est with the exception of Cazic-Thule. So maybe i really did break the servers by trying to do this event. It would explain why it was disabled for a while if im not mistaken.

Once the server was back up i logged back in. I was surprised to see that the event hadn't ended and i could continue it. Roughly 45 minutes later i completed the event and also got the additional rewards mentioned in the quest write up.

Read the Turn-in for the 10th Ring section and the Additional Rewards section.

First off, you have to win the event. That means you have to prevent any giants from getting to the entrance to Thurgadin, Seneshal Aldikar must survive and you have to kill Narandi before he despawns.

The lance is a loot drop from Narandi's corpse. You also need to loot Narandi's head.

You get the 10th Ring by turning your 9th ring and Narandi's head to the seneshal. (You will also receive Narandi's shorn head).

To get the other items you need to do additonal turn-ins. In order to do these turn-ins the Coldain commanders (aka, Heros) need to survive the war, also.

Give the Shorn Head of Narandi(recieved with your 10th ring from the Seneshal) to Churn the Axeman and you will get the Crown of Narandi.
Give the Shorn Head of Narandi to Corbin Blackwell and you will get the Earring of the Frozen Skull.
Give the Shorn Head of Narandi to Dobbin Crossaxe and you will get the Faceguard of Bentos the Hero.
Give the Shorn Head of Narandi to Garadain Glacierbane and you will get the Choker of the Wretched.
Give the Shorn Head of Narandi to Kargin the Archer and you will get the Eye of Narandi.

If you have Ally faction give your 10th ring to the Dain and you will recieve the ring back and the Protection of the Dain. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE NOT ALLY WITH THE DAIN, he will eat the ring and give you nothing in return. Being Ally with the coldain is not enough, you MUST be Ally with the DAIN.

In short, it is possible to get ALL the rewards listed if you are Ally with the Dain and all the named Coldain survive the battle.

Just finished soloing the 10th ring war. I'm a level 81 monk with around 30k hp buffed, and a T1 cleric mercenary. Overall, it was very easy fighting-wise, but I made a number of observations I thought I'd share.

First of all, the goal: Keep Seneschal Aldikar alive, and kill Narandi the Wretched (and turn in his head). These two goals must be met, or you lose.

After starting the ring war from Sentry Badain and going through the roleplay, go near the entrance of Thurgadin, around loc -500, -100. Here, all incoming giants will eventually pass through. Unless you're absolutely sure no giants are incoming, stay here instead of running around all over the place, as you risk having giants pass through to the Seneschal. The giants charge until they run into Coldain, you, or ultimately the Seneschal at Thurgadin. Some Coldain will die on the flanks, but just let them.

Every time a wave is approaching, spam all the commands to Zrelik the Scout, making all Coldain come to you. They do some damage, heal and help intercept giants, plus it greatly increases the chance of the named Coldains staying alive. If you don't call them to you, they'll just die on their flanks to the south, east and west of Thurgadin.

Every time you're done with a wave, go check up on the Seneschal. You can target him by cycling targets (TAB key) through the fake wall to Thurg. If he's under attack, immediately go help him.

Several waves of giants spawn, and ultimately, after about 1½ hour, waves with Veterans, High Priests of Zek and possibly Warlords come. For me, three large waves came, each large one containing a Warlord. Some timespans:

A few minutes after the 3rd Warlord died, Narandi spawned at loc -2500, 0. Feel free to go engage him before he shouts. Be careful, he begins wandering east and despawns within 5 minutes or so if you don't. He's easy to kill now at higher levels.

Loot up and get you ring, done!

Sentry Badain Breathes deeply and blows into an ornate horn. The sound echos through the mountain pass. All local inhabitants scurry to take cover.

Sentry Badain says 'I'll be right with you, Bonzz.'

You gain party experience!!

(He despawns along with other Dwarves. He will respawn momentarily and you see...)

Sentry Badain says 'Excellent! All of your commanders have reported to the Dain, and none too soon mind you. We are getting reports of Kromrif troop movement in the area and final preparations must be made. Follow me and the Seneschal will brief you.'

(He will lead you back toward thurgadin at the bend in the river just south of the zone line, where all the other NPC's are located.)

(Other NPC's are: Dobbin Crossaxe, Corbin Blackwell, Kargin the Archer, Churn the Axeman, Zrelik the Scout, Senescal Aldikar and Garadain Glacierbane. The more of these guys that survive the war, the more items you can get at the end.)

(Baiden will walk off towards thurgadin and despawn)

(Give him the 9th ring and he will give it back along with Order's of Engagment)

Seneschal Aldikar says 'Commit these orders to memory, Bonzz, have them ready to speak at a moment's notice. When you are finished memorizing, repeat them to me. Tell your soldiers to prepare themselves. When the orders are handed to Zrelik we will take up our positions.'

You gain party experience!!

The Order's of Engagment read as follows:

OFFICIAL COLDAIN ORDERS OF ENGAGEMENT: To call Garadain's men:"Garadain to my side!" To call Dobbin and his men:"Dobbin assist me!" To summon Churn's troops:"Churn protect me!" To call upon Corbin's team: "Corbin, attack!" Call all available troops:"For the Dain, attack!"

(Basically, you need hot keys to turn attack off, target Zrelik and /say one of those commands to Zrelik the Scout.)

(Give the Orders of engagment to Scout Zrelik)

Zrelik the Scout says 'At yer service, Bonzz. Remember now, before issuing me an order ya must disengage from any combat and be sure yer speakin to me. I advise you to avoid combat at all costs, your leadership is crucial.'

You gain party experience!!

(The war begins with a little NPC spam as follows...)

Giving commands results in the following responses I saw:

You say, 'For the Dain, attack!'
Zrelik the Scout shouts 'All able Coldain, come to me at once!'

If you practice the same art and require aid in learning the fundamental basic skills, then I will be more than pleased to oblige that necessity. '

You say, 'Churn protect me!'
Zrelik the Scout shouts 'Churn, get yer men and c'mere on the double! Bonzz needs ye!'

You say, 'Corbin, attack!'
Zrelik the Scout shouts 'Bonzz is in need of yer help Corbin. Bring yer men!'

If any giant gets past you to the Thurgadin entrance, you loose. A clear sign this has happened is that Zrelik is missing and giants are lined up on both sides of the river by Thurgadin.

If you loose, it is a bit humorous to go into Thurgadin and see that the whole zone is dead.... with corpses lying around with names like A Gutted Guard, A Gored Guard, A Butchered Butcher, A Murdered Merchant, A Bludgeoned Banker, A Conquered Coldain, A Punctured Priestess, and A Perforated Priest! LOL

I am unclear on how long it takes for Thurgadin to reset so you can try again. Anyone?

after killing Narandi:

Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'Outlander! You've done it! The Kromrif invasion has been frustrated! Bring me the head of Narandi and your Hero's ring.'

hand in your 9th ring and the head of narandi, in return you get the 10th ring and the "Shorn Head of Narandi" - https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=63885

If you remain an ally he will be most gracious, but be warned, if you fall from his good graces he will keep the ring.

Seneschal Aldikar says 'Show the head to the surviving heroes quickly, we must report to the Dain and tend to the wounded.'

hand in the Shorn Head of Narandi to each of the dwarves near Seneschal:

Churn the Axeman pries a crown from the head of Narandi, 'The halls of Thurgadin will echo with praises to you for as long as we grace the face of this land. May this crown serve you well. Honor through battle!' - receive Crown of Narandi

Kargin the Archer picks up a stick and hits the back of the dismembered head with all his might, knocking one of its eyes out of the socket, '******* killed my brother! Hope his ghost felt that one!' - receive Eye of Narandi

Corbin Blackwell unhooks a glowing earring from Narandi's shorn head, 'Hmm, this looks like something special. Take it, Kelandi, you've earned it! Be well.' - receive Earring of the Frozen Skull

Dobbin Crossaxe gives a gentle, warm smile and slight nod of his head in warm welcoming, 'Good day to you, Kelandi, and welcome to the district of Selia. If you are seeking council in the ways of enchantments, then I would be more than pleased and honored to aid you where I can, my friend.' - receive Faceguard of Bentos the Hero

Garadain Glacierbane removes a choker from the severed head and returns both items to you, 'Congratulations on your victory, Kelandi. I couldn't have done a better job myself. May Brell protect and watch over you and your friends. Farewell.' - receive Choker of the Wretched

edit: this is how it ended for me when I did the 10th ring war solo and did not let any dwarves die.

I tried it a third time with a few non active boxes, and the ring war may or may not have been bugged. But I lost again. The GM said none of the three episodes were bugged, but what did they know, when two clearly were bugged? It was fabled season, which may or may not have been the problem.

I waited for the fableds to go away, and had a kind ranger by the name of O. and his SK named W. helped me. It started and ran normally the whole time I think. It went on and on, two hours at least. Lots and lots of giants of various flavors to kill. Maybe a hundred giants total, maybe more. I got to 85 % at one point. O. Died once. Necro rez for O. at that point. The waves were hard to distinguish from one another, as each wave had sub waves of giants, which made a clear distintion on the basis of spawns difficult. The spawns seemed less numerous, and even as hard as a green in each wave at the end. Maybe that is the main difference between waves. Narandi spwaned, and died in a few minutes in his spawn site. I hit one button for good luck. Neither of the two who engaged needed a heal. Overall pretty fun, exciting even, nerve wracking (am I going to loose after all this?), but not that hard. The challenging part was getting the giants located, and rounded up before they became very hard to aggro. Some wanted to run for Thurgadin, and not stop. The wiz and the necro actually killed one at the gates of Thurgadin without a loss on my part (they are really gimp, and almost never kill stuff, but I was killing other summoners at that point, so no other options). Loot was everything listed. But it could have been nothing if the dwarven hearoes had died other than the tenth ring, DA spell, and the lance.

By killing Narandi, I save Thurgadin, and the dwarves inside, so no piles of dead dwarves lying all over the place, and no interruption of the Dain monster missions like a loss brings with it for ? two hours. Great Divide had respwned by the time I had my DA spell from the Dain. Yeah Thrugadin, Yeah Dwarves!

I just found this posted on one of the Allakhazam pages about the Coldain Ring Quests. It is likely an old page, but the page still works as of today, and the quests have been little changed for many years as far as I know. A quick look showed it was heavier on information from the earlier stages of the quest, and light on the Tenth Ring quest. Also I don't know if you can turn in the Head of Narandi in Icewell Keep, as Seneschal Aldikar is there in Great Divide after killing Narandi, and some temporary items poof on zoning, camping or dying. Trust me there, there are at least two I can think of. But at least it is an outline of the ten quests in one page. Good luck. http://www.geocities.com/comixetc/coldain.htm

Badain respawned in about 24 hours as others have said he did for them. I got my Declaration of War from the still Fabled Dain as mentioned below. I gave the Declartion of War to Badain, and nothing happened. I read what he said, and he wanted my ninth ring, which i gave to him, and he instantly gave it back, and in a second or two, the whole zone despawned. Things went then as per the quest text until I got the "Orders of Engagement" (referred to as XYZ in my post from yesterday, text under the page for "Orders of Engagement). The Seneschal's instructions said I should repeat the instructions back, so I decided to make up some buttons that said those things (like titled Garadain, line 1 /attack off, line 2 /pause 10, line 3 /tar zrelik, line 4 /pause 10, line 5 /say garadain to my side!). I had just finished making five buttons, and suddenly Zrelik the Scout despawned without having received the Orders of Engagement. Then I checked track, and not only had the hero's despawned and respawned in new positions, but there were like 75 dain troops on track, and about 20 Kromrif Spearman. The heroes were stationed with their men. Seneschal Aldikar was at the entrance to Thurgadin, and grey to level 80 now. Most of the Kromrif Spearman were to the west, and about 1/3 were to the east in positions I remembered them to be in from years past. The Kromrif were easy to dispatch. None of them ever advanced, even when aggro'd. They just threw spears at me continuously. I didn't see any mini boss mobs on this wave. None of the Dains troops were ever engaged in the fight, and all remained healthy. Then nothing happened for two hours except I begged, foraged, tracked, and rebuffed. After two hours the zone had everything despawn again, except Seneschal Aldikar who said: Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'Outlander! Narandi is retreating. Don't let him escape alive!". I went looking for Narandi, but he had either despawned, or never had spawned in the first place. I checked Thurgadin and Icewell Keep, and everyone there was healthy.

I suspect the quest is potentially soloable now, but if I could ever get it to spawn correctly and proceed the way it is supposed to, I might get my tenth ring. I had my boxes in the zone with me, and they were prepared to engage the Kromrif if they got close to Thurgadin, which they didn't. They were not grouped with me, just in the zone.

I said the magic words to the fabled dain "You can count on my help", and he gave me "Declaration of War". I didn't show him my ring. I gave the Declaration of War to Sentry Badain, and he proceeded as described in the quest text. I gave my ninth ring to Seneschal Aldikar as he instructed, and he gave the ring back with XYZ, which was a series of instructions on how to control the troops. I didn't repeat the instructions, I just gave them to Zrelik the Scout as instructed. The scout started following me like a pet. No army of dwarves spawned, and I just had the scout, and the six dwarves listed under my post on the mobs page. I accidentally aggrod' the scout, and rooted him and ran off. He lost aggro, and also lost his pet status. This was about a half an hour after handing in the orders. After about another half hour, suddenly there were some giants on track (maybe 8). I ran to meet them. They had proximity aggro but no obvious aggro to a bow attack. I was able to round up most of them and dispose of them, but one snuck through and I lost because Thurgadin and Icewell Keep were littered with dwarf bodies. The reason I had difficulty in rounding them all up was I started to get summoned by the ones previously damaged, and the one who escaped didn't respond to an arrow. As they got closer to Thurgadin (not really close, but around the region of the guard huts), they started to run for the entrance of Thurgadin. I killed the ones that I aggroed easy enough. I hung out in Great Divide for a long time, and begged from the dwarves, they gave me about five copper, and I got some begging and foraging skill ups. It seemed bugged because the five dwarves didn't despawn. I started this as a group with my two boxes, but switched it to a raid format of one group of two and one group of one. I don't know if that made a difference as far as spawning stuff was conccenrned. Overall, I would say this was a bugged event. If it wasn't supposed to work during fabled season, either the fabled dain shouldn't have given me the Declaration of War, or Badain should not have accepted the Declaration of War, or the zone should not have despawned then. But to have to wait an hour for the first wave of Giants seems excessive. And then once I appeared to have lost for nothing to return to normal after another hour at least suggests a script problem to me.

not sure whats up with teh war but atm its VERY buggy. tried it 7 days ago, forgot to hand in orders to scout zrelik, he poofed but the dwarves all moved into position anyway and teh spearmen popped, but the war didnt go any further, the waves didnt spawn. had to wait 3 days for sentry badain to repop. he popped did everything it said in walk thro up to handing in order to scout zrelik. handed in orders to him but after that nothing happened, the rest of teh dwarves just sat there I had repeated the orders back at Seneschal Aldikar before i handed in orders but they didnt move or anything, he said his line for each command i gave him but other than that he didnt do anything else.we waited 45 minutes, thought the war had bugged up funny part was scout was my pet but thats as far as it went. i logged off main logged on alt, was gonna run him to gd. I had just logged on alt when i got a tell from group thats the giants had started popping so i logged back on main, sure enough the waves of giants had started, but the dwarves were still sittign in their spot, no army of dwarves either. so it was just me and my group against the giants. the Kromif Spearmean didnt spawn either. we thougth we was screwed for sure, but went ahaed and started killing the giants in hope narandi would spawn eventually. sure enough he popped at the end. he spawned alone, no wave with him was an easy kill. got his head did turn in to the dwarves, they said they had no need for it and gave it back, had 2 Seneschal Aldikar in 1 spot, 1 sitting, 1 standing. had to be careful and make sure I gave it to the standing one, did turn in got head back and 10th coldain ring. he depopped. tried turning in head again to the dwarves, no rewards . ah oh well least i managed to get the ring in spite of the bugs. anyone else been having trouble with ring war ? I did everything it said do in write up here , oh and i tried handing ring to scout zrelik before i gave him order, he said he didnt need it, so that dont work. I think i know why he eats the rign tho and some people stated. if you give him order, he turns into a pet for you, and pets eat whatever you give them so its possible they tried giving him ring when he was in pet mode. know, i tested it when he was a pet, i gave him a random junk item when he was my pet, he ate it and didnt give it back.

Give the orders (called what?) to Zrelik. = Declaration of War

Handing in the Dirk and ring to Dain and saying you can count on me.....

I sucessfully completed all aspects of the ring war without the Dirk of the Dain as a turn in at any point. I had it in my bank for good luck though.

Notes: 1) To get the Declaration of War from the Dain (regular or fabled) /say You can count on my help, with the Dain targeted. No turn in was needed. I suspect anyone can get the Declaration of War with this step. 2) to get the Orders of Engagement, give the Declaration of War to Sentry Badain, along with ring nine (I don't know if this is Mq'able or not, but why take a chance?). This turn in despawns all mobs in the Great Divide zone, and starts a script. Follow the new Sentry Badain, when asked give the ninth ring to the version of Seneschal Aldikar up at the time, and receive the Orders of Engagement. Make buttons then ( or better previously as I did when I failed a ring war once). 3) To start the ring war, officially you are supposed to give the Orders of Engagement to Scout Zrelik, but the ring war may start anyway if you wait long enough (eg. while making buttons) after receiving the Orders of Engagement and while still making buttons, reading it, typing and etc. Bugged script makes it uncertain which or both options start the war. 4) Somehow I managed to aggro Scout Zrelik at least twice, maybe three times while the dwarves were still spawning, and before the giant invasion started. I don't know if I caused it by an attack, he aggros if you violate orders and go too far south, or if it is bugged. The one time I didn't knowingly aggro Scout Zrelik he died on the first wave of giants, so pretty useless if you are the intended recipient of the tenth ring, and plan to take part in the battle. Maybe he works as intended if you stay near Thurgadin, and don't take part in the battle as suggested on one of the turn ins. 5) Allow lots of time for this event, as it took me at least two hours for it to run to the end with Narandi. 6) Bring at least several trackers to kill giants before they are intercepted by the dwarves, which will increase your chance of succeding in the quest, and also increase your loot at the end if you do win the tenth ring. 7) Someone needs to figure out what exactly aggros the giants, as a running giant can't be pulled with a bow or a DD spell at the point when the giant smelled Dwarf blood. Someone suggested it was proximity to the giant, and maybe that is all that is needed. Will AE taunt also work?

After turning in the Ring and the DoW to Sentry Badain....

[Mon Sep 10 06:11:04 2007] Sentry Badain says 'Excellent! All of your commanders have reported to the Dain, and none too soon mind you. We are getting reports of Kromrif troop movement in the area and final preparations must be made. Follow me and the Seneschal will brief you.

At this time you follow him to a circle of dorfs that are in the middle of a conversation it seems.

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:00 2007] Garadain Glacierbane says 'With all due respect, Seneschal, I feel my men are best suited for the eastern post. If the outlander has rounded up enough soldiers to hold 'em off from the south then they'll definitely test us in the gorge. We'll be needin' a solid defense there.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:12 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'Very well, Garadain, the eastern post is yours. I'll place Kargin and his bowmen on the hill to the west, and Churn, you'll station your troops up near the caves just past them.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:17 2007] Churn the Axeman says 'Understood sir.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:20 2007] Sentry Badain says 'Excuse me, Seneschal Aldikar, you instructed me to report to you when the outlander returned. I have brought him.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:26 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'Perfect timing outlander, please be seated and listen carefully. Badain, yer dismissed.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:34 2007] Sentry Badain says 'Sir, yessir!'

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:42 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'We knew the day might come when the Kromrif would discover the location of our beloved city. It was only prudent for there to be a plan for such a circumstance. In light of recent developments, however, our plans have been adjusted. Outlander, the Dain has appointed you to lead our armies in defense of Thurgadin.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:51 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'I will stand here with a handful of men as a final line of defense. Should I fall, all will be lost. You will have these men and their soldiers to command. Use them wisely, you will be richly rewarded if your forces are able to keep them alive.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:12:59 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'Garadain will post his men in the gorge to the east. Churn and his men will await your command in the caves to the west. Dobbin will have his forces at the ready in the clearing directly south of here near the towers. If any Kromrif make it to his vicinity he and his men will attack with or without your command.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:13:07 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'Lastly, Corbin will hide his men in the worm caves to the south, call on him for a surprise attack. Remember where these men are stationed, outlander. Should they call out for help you may wish to send some of your people to aid them.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:13:15 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'The leader of this invasion is a powerful Kromrif named Narandi. Rumor has it that he is more powerful than any ten of his peers. He must fall. When he is slain you must show his head and the ninth ring to me.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:13:23 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'Scout Zrelik here will follow you and serve as your herald. He will relay your orders to the troops. Show me your ninth ring now to verify your identity and I will give you the orders to memorize.'

Give him the ring he gives it right back

[Mon Sep 10 06:13:55 2007] Seneschal Aldikar says 'Commit these orders to memory, Reznir, have them ready to speak at a moment's notice. When you are finished memorizing, repeat them to me. Tell your soldiers to prepare themselves. When the orders are handed to Zrelik we will take up our positions.'

Handing the orders to Zrelik.....

[Mon Sep 10 06:16:07 2007] Zrelik the Scout says 'At yer service, Reznir. Remember now, before issuing me an order ya must disengage from any combat and be sure yer speakin to me. I advise you to avoid combat at all costs, your leadership is crucial.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:16:20 2007] Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'Good citizens of Thurgadin, hear me! Our city, our people, our very lives are in danger this day. The Kromrif are at this very moment marching towards us in an offensive they hope will bring about our demise...'

[Mon Sep 10 06:16:36 2007] Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'I hereby command, by authority of Dain Frostreaver the Fourth, that all able bodied Coldain fight to the death in defense of our land. Children, disabled citzens, and unseasoned travellers are advised to evacuate immediately!'

[Mon Sep 10 06:16:52 2007] Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'My fellow soldiers, take heart! For we are not alone in this endeavor. One among us, an outlander, has earned the title Hero of the Dain for valiant service to our people. This newcomer has brought with him allies that will fight alongside you to help bring about our victory.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:17:08 2007] Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'My friends... Brell did not place us here so many centuries ago to be slaughtered by these heathens. Nor did our forefather, Colin Dain, sacrifice himself simply to have us fail here now. Through these events we were brought to this day to test our strength and our faith.'

[Mon Sep 10 06:17:24 2007] Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'Will we be shackled together to slave away in Kromrif mines or will we stand united and feed these beasts Coldain blades? By Brell, I promise you, it is better to die on our feet than to live on our knees!'

[Mon Sep 10 06:17:40 2007] Seneschal Aldikar shouts 'TROOPS, TAKE YOUR POSITIONS!!'

Was just messing around solo, never tried and didn't really read up on it so lost it by letting a mob get by (figured a bunch of dorfs could kill 1 weak giant >_<). Will do it again soon and log the after war logs for ya

War Hand Ins

Before you start, realize that as of this date, this event is extrememly buggy. It will throw you off in some parts and make you think you did something wrong in others.

Hand in the Declaration of War the the Sentry, and he will despawn, along with the entire GD zone. He respawns and tells you to follow him to the group of named dwards you've helped and dealt with throughout the ring quests. The Seneschal is sitting down with Garadain, Dobbin, Corbin, Kargin, and Churn just south of the Thurg entrance. Wait until the Sentry approaches the Seneschal and says his text (something about waiting for the outlander to arrive). Hand the Seneschal your 9th ring. He returns it along with some commands. He wants you to say the commands to him... I took a screen shot of the commands, so I will post them as a reply to this later.

Hand the commands to the Scout, who is also at the camp. He follows you around like a pet afterwards. NOTE: I am a rogue... when I hid, the Scout aggroed me for some reason... another of the beautiful bugs. I hit escape and he ran off to the northwest corner of the zone. The event scripts still functioned, I had just lost command of the dorfs (which at current levels of 75 wasn't critical).

What will seem like forever will pass before you get the first wave. I believe there three tiers of difficulty with the giants who spawn. Each tier will consist of about 4 or 5 waves of that difficulty. In between the tiers the lengthy time will pass again... most likely to help out those who did the quest in the pre-ooc regen days. While the waves are coming and dying, pay NO attention to what the Seneschal or the Scout says. Just keep looking for the mobs. I had the waves spawn behind the Kromrif Spearmen to the south east and south west of the city entrance, as well as at the nexus spires. When Narandi finally spawns, he pops directly south in the river and heads towards the nexus spires for some reason. He has a ton of hp still, so don't take him too lightly, but he's pretty easy. Loot his head. The named dwarfs at the entrance respawn upon Narandi's death.

At this point you should have the 9th ring and Narandi's Head. Turn them both into the Seneschal for your tenth ring.
