This is the third in the Qeynos Badge Quest series. You must do the first two before doing this one.

You say, 'Hail, Vegalys Keldrane'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Greetings to you, citizen. By order of the Council of Qeynos I have been given the duty of apprehending the individuals [responsible] for unleashing this terrible plague upon the people and the lands of Antonius Bayle. The more I look into this matter, the more I come to find that this will be no easy task.

You say, 'I wish to further advance'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Interested in advancing further are you? We have gathered
a great deal of information as a result of the latest series of arrests. We do require [interrogators] that are able to pry the information we require out those less then
willing to talk. Also, Velarte Selire at the Temple of Life is looking for help with his [research]. You may wish to talk with him.

At this part I thought that no new quest was added, but then I saw the second set of [ ]

You say, 'I will help with his research'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Excellent! The more I learn from my investigators the more I find that these Bloodsabers have stretched their tendrils of influence all throughout our beloved city. Nevertheless, we are committed to exposing these fiends once and for all. Perhaps you would like to become an [investigator]?

This just leads back to the original quest. Instead of following that lead go seek out Velarte Selire. He is standing outside in the courtyard at the Temple of Life.

You say, 'Hail, Velarte Selire'

Velarte Selire says 'Hello Nandarr . Antonius Bayle and the council have ordered a full investigation of these folks that call themselves the Bloodsabers. I hear his
plan is to eventually round up every member of this strange disease worshipping cult and bring them in to answer for their terrible crimes against our city and people. [Vegalys] Keldrane is heading up the investigation.

Nice little loop they got going eh? Try asking "What research"

You say, 'what research'

Velarte Selire says 'We are currently in the process of conducting research into viable ways to bring an end to this terrible plague. This suffering has gone on long enough. Being a researcher doesn't take strength or brute force, though those qualities do sometimes help. Being a researcher takes intelligence first and foremost. No offense, but not everyone has that quality. This will be no easy task. Are you still [interested] in helping us with our research?

You say, 'I am interested'

Velarte Selire says 'Still interested? Very well then Nandarr, you look rather intelligent. As a show of your commitment to this task, please turn in your
[Interrogator's Badge].

At this point I give him the badge. He gives me a Research Briefing, which tells me how curing diseased rats with enchanted rats work (see bottom).

Velarte Selire says 'It seems Vegalys trusts you, so I guess I can trust you as well. Take this briefing. It explains the current state of our research and it explains the test you will be conducting. If you can conduct the test successfully, the Temple of Life shall be in your debt and we shall use the findings to continue our work. However, we have a [problem] we need assistance with first.

You say, 'what problem'

Velarte Selire says 'Unfortunately, those vile followers of the Plague Bringer are still attempting to foul up our plans. Several our [test animals] have been stolen from us by a gnome, a member of the Dark Reflection. These animals are very important to our research, as the briefing describes.

You say, 'what test animals'

Velarte Selire says 'These animals were enchanted with a sort of anti-disease aura. It sounds crazy but we thought that perhaps we could use a sort of 'anti-epidemic' to spread a cure to this disease. However, this aura is as of yet imperfect and also quite [volatile]. We had hoped to use rats to spread the cure, much in the same way they often spread disease.

You say, 'how volatile?'

Velarte Selire says 'Yes, the enchantment we placed on the rodents does not last long at all. It disperses its curing magic almost instantly. We fashioned several containers at great expense and they have the ability to preserve an enchantment for long periods of time. After enchanting a rat we [place them in the container] until we are ready to conduct our tests.

You say, 'place them in the container?'

Velarte Selire says 'Oh, I assure you it is completely humane and the rats do seem to enjoy prolonged exposure to the enchantment while in the container. In fact, it is all we can do to get them out of the containers once we put them in! In any case, those containers are dreadfully expensive to make and those rats. . . Well, we have begun to become sort of attached to them. Please find this [gnome].

You say, 'what gnome'

Velarte Selire says 'Her name is Oobnopterbevny Biddilets. She was last seen high tailing it across the Plains of Karana. She infiltrated our temple and stole the containers that had our beloved rodents, which were already enchanted and prepared for our next round of tests. I shudder to think of what this monster may be doing to those poor animals. Anyway, retrieve them at any cost. You will need them for the [test] you will be conducting.

You say, 'what test'

Velarte Selire says 'The briefing explains how the test is to be conducted but first you need to find the test animals. Get the rodents first from that gnome. Then give
me your Researcher's Briefing and we will start the test. Release all three rodents as directed then give me the three Empty Enchanted Jars. If you were able to cure all of the diseased rodents by properly using our enchanted rodents, we will consider this test a success and you shall be rewarded with the Researchers Badge.

The Gnome we need to find wanders in West Karana. I found a very nice lady by the name of Trisica who was able to bring me right to the spot where this gnome spawns , as she was killed earlier by Oobnopterbevny.

You will need to go to loc is -2061.01, -3813.94, 7.71, its near a farm. When Oobnopterbevny is up, she will shout 'What a lovely diseased filled place! Tra la la.' Now I was able to track her down at the loc above, she conned green to me (im 55)and indiff to me in wolf form. She is a necromancer but not a very tough one, however, I did get exp upon killing her. This leads me to believe that she's around 40 - 42, just a guess.

I looted "Live enchanter jar 1 thru 3" off her. These items are small so they will fit in yer bags. Then I returned to North Qeynos.

Since I was ready to start my test, having the jars that Velarte Selire wanted (NOTE: do not turn them into him yet) I turned in the book he gave me (NOTE: You have 6 Norrathian hours to complete this test)

NOTE: READ the book first! Study it, you'll understand whats going on below better. Upon turning in the book rats will spawn behind you each on its own tile. Facing Velarte Selire the tiles look as follows:

E = enchanted rat
0 = empty slot
X= diseased rat
1 = healthy rat

1 x x 0
0 x x x
0 1 1 x
0 0 0 0

So in order to have a successful test you need to cure all rats. So take your 3 enchanted rats and place them as follows:

1 x x E <---- FIRST
E x x x <--- THIRD
0 1 1 x
0 0 0 E <--- SECOND

"Dropping" a jar in a tile is just like handing something in to an NPC. (NOTE: make SURE your dropping it on the right tile) After all the rats are cured you should have "Empty enchanter jar 1 thru 3" these are also small items and will fit in yer bags. Now you can turn the 3 jars into Velarte Selire. After doing so he will despawn along with the rats.

Velarte Selire says 'You did it! You have proven you have the intelligence required and you may wear this Researcher's Badge with pride! Thank you for returning the jars.

is there a 4th or even a 5th quest out yet? i know it could be just kinda of a fun quest to do but for a cleric who has a goblin soul caller it needs to get up to atleast 5 wis before it's something i would think of using

As a cleric you might want to do your disciple symbol or whatever they are called instead. The quests seem to be getting implemented faster and depending on your religion you get a right click effect (Tunare's has grasping roots which I have to say is very very cool).

I replaced my Goblin Soulcaller with this lil' item, moving my Soulcaller to my resist gear bag.

4ac 3str 3agi 3wis 3int 15mana 15hp is a small improvement over 5wis. At 60th level, the 2wis difference means 24 mana... if you subtract the 15 mana from this item, you get a net result of a loss of 9 mana for the remainder of the stats (4ac, 3str 3agi 3int 15hp). It's well worth the trade in my book.

Someone explain to me how this failed:
E = empty, D = diseased, G = good rat

1-2-3-4

E-E-E-E 1
D-D-D-E 2
D-E-E-E 3
E-D-D-G 4

I, I put the first rat in 1,4

E-E-E-E
D-D-D-E
D-E-E-E
G-G-G-G

This next part pisses me off. Put it in 1,1.
This was to make the left line all G, then was going to put last one in 4,2.
Well when I put the jar in 1,1 (or block AA)..Nothing happened!
Then I put the last rat in 4,2 and I heard those chimes.
How the hell did I get Block AA wrong when that's an obvious choice????
Man I don't think this quest was set up properly.

I wasted 3 hours on this quest traveling all around the place, and also died because of that stupid Necromancer.
Hmm, no offence but I was level 51 and a Necromancer (Gnome even) at level 40 should NOT be hitting for 98 max and have 2k hps if not a little more.

A complete waste of time!

When you give a jar to a tile, you get an empty jar back in return. Is it possible you gave one of these empty jars to the third tile, rather than the last Enchanted one?
RE: lame!
# Aug 23 2001 at 4:28 PM Rating: Default
Perhaps you handed in the wrong jar?
The jars are numbered, 1-3.
Handing jar 1 first, then jar 2, then jar 3.
If you handed jar 3 in to the second space, then it probably wouldn't do anything... handing jar 2 in the the third one you picked acted as though that was the second one you were putting down.

So (E=emtpy, D=diseased, H=healthy, numbers for each numbered jar):

E-E-E-E
D-D-D-E
D-E-E-E
E-D-D-H

2-E-E-E
D-D-D-3
D-E-E-E
1-D-D-H

Should have worked fine.

And just for reference, my board looked like this:

H-1-D-H
3-D-D-E
E-E-D-E
H-D-2-H

Kinda wish they'd made the rats a bit smaller, it's hard to see what's going on when they're that big... =P

Hmm...

My mistake was I didn't see that tile (damn invisible entities) and gave it to BA instead of BB... Perhaps you gave it to the wrong one... Because indeed... that should have worked... Weeell... worse case scenario (like mine) redo everything. These quests haven't gone super camped like the Shawls, so Shilster is usually always up, as is the investigator.

Note: After you kill the third guy for the inspector's badge, ask for a confession document, THEN turn in the 3 items so you don't have 1 hour spawn to wait for.

Only takes a bit cuz if you are on your way back, that necro SHOULD be up... takes a bit to do the first 2, and the necro should pop by the time you're on your way back. Don't forget to turn in the 3 empty jars after you get all rats cured.

There were be more badges, thats almost a definitive yes. But, for those of you who say he doesnt mention any new keywords, you also seem to be missing the idea that there wont need to be.

Odds are that you will simply ask Vegalys about advancing further again. But, even if this is incorrect, The newspaper will be our guide. every single time the paper gives clues as to the next step. look there.

As to why more badges? The storyline isnt done. plain and simple.

In every city (at least those with starting races) there is a merchant next to the bank who will sell a newspaper for a couple of silver. If you hail them they'll encourage you to buy one and it is always in the top lefthand slot.

Make sure you know the grid is 4x4, cuz the rats were only on 3x4, and I didn't see the first row there (since nothing was there) and gave my last rat to a square and LOST IT ALL!!!

I had to go and do all 3 quests over again... friggin pissed me off since I had plans to help a friend with his epic weapon, but since we spent so much time in SK waiting for the interrogator, we had a good chance to run the zone tracking for Quillmane... ah well... But I did get it.

Very easy puzzle... just basic othello... but the item is very nice. I just donned it and I'm level 50 for crimenetly's sake =)

Well... now to do another one JUST IN CASE I lose the 3rd one doing the fourth one (which I'm jonsing for really hard)

looking at these giant rats and invisible "tile" creatures, it can be very confusing trying to figure out what the layout is. the best way to work this puzzle is to switch your camera to the overhead view. then everything will be much much clearer.

Velarte is a One Hour Spawn if someone else has completed the quest. As soon as they turn in their jars, he despawns. He is not a rare spawn as someone else indicated.

Hope this helps.

IF you go in to the Temple of Life in N Qeynos. You will enter the grounds and look out over the pond and see the UFO. Turn to your Right and there will be (2?) merchants standing against the wall near the building at the entrance to the Temple. Velarte will be standing to the Left of the merchants when facing them. Though he despawns for approximately an hour if someone just finished the quest. You will just have to sit and wait on him. No,i dont play on test, i am on Tarew Marr so the quest is live on all servers.

Aye, Velarte is at the Temple of Life. Walk past the little building and he'll be on your right, just before the ramp up to the UFO thingy.

And folks, please watch what you're doing... a druid and a wizzy tried to KS the gnome from me earlier in WK... and I'd already been kiting her around a bit. I yelled "HEY!" to the druid, but that didn't do squat since the wizzy kept nuking, finally ran up to the wizzy and yelled "WHAT THE HELL?!" at him and he backed off then. Was a bit worried that I wouldn't get the kill. Some people are just rude!
(And seeing as how before I started kiting the gnome she was playing with Froon on the hill, it's not like they were anywhere nearby when I started kiting... /sigh)

x x x 0
0 0 0 0
0 x x 0

1 0 0 0
x x x 0
0 1 1 0
0 x x 0

0 = empty space
1 = dropped jar
x = dieased rat

It said tile AA, CB, and CC as I turned them in.
Perfect logic, but failed. And this is after going thru the first quest six times. The second three times and the third twice. This is getting INSANE.

So now I must start ALL over Again. This quest better go past part 3 or I am going to go postal on some Verant employees.

Where were the healthy rats in your layout? You have to surround the diseased rats with a healthy rat and an enchanted rat.

Sounds to me like someone killed the healthy rats on you, Or at least aggroed them away.

Time for my constructive post of the day. The gnome is not triggered, but on a 1 hour timer. She spawns at this location: -5903, -3135. Soon after she spawns and buffs she will start to wander however.

The best way to find Ms. Biddilets is to go to the Guard tower that houses Guard McCluskey. She spawns just north of this (over a small hill), among a few trees, which is visible from the N-S road. Alternately, from the Guard Tower, head north to the top of the small rise, and wait. She has a pretty good agro range, and when I was there, she outran her pet.

Her location on spawn is neg 2159 neg1843. Get close to this exact loc, sit down and look south. She will spawn in front of you and you can jump her before she buffs or summons her pet.
On another note, her pet moves a lot faster than her. I'm a lvl 45 cleric that nearly soloed her because of that. I pulled her pet with a nuke and then ran far away from her, killed the pet and waited for her to come to me. I got her down to halflife when I ran out of mana and went to bash on her (Yes, I tank a lot because my normal group consist of a chanter and a druid. My offense, defense, and 1hb are maxed, using a Mudman Enforcer.) That was my mistake getting in close to her. Her spells suck and I resisted them all with out any buffs, but she hits hard and has a crapload of hps. I ended up zoning to save my butt.
RE: gnome
# Aug 23 2001 at 3:19 PM Rating: Decent
FYI, the loc given is not possible in WKarana. That would be south of the river, where you cannot go. The reversed loc, -3135, -5903 is valid but when I went there and waited, she popped somewhere else, closer to the west end of the zone. Either she pops in random places or the loc given is fully incorrect.

There are a number of different rat configurations (as surmised, a finite number), with slight variations in the number of each type of rat. For example, the grid that spawned for me looked like this:

1010
x1x0
0x0x
10x1

the solution for which is to put the jars down in this order (A,B,C):

1010
111C
A101
1B11

The only configuration I can think of that's always unsolvable is one in which a diseased rat ends up in one of the corners (so it can't be totally random). So, anyone want to figure out how many ways six/seven identical items can go into twelve spaces and three/four other identical items can go into the ten left in a 4x4 grid? :D

I could do it if the number of Diseased Rat spawns were a single set number. However, the configuration you posted as opposed to the configuration Nandaar posted are different in the number of diseased rats (Nandaar posted 6, you posted 5). I can probably work up a number of possible configs for both possibilities. Also, I'd need to know what the guidelines for this little research project are. For instance, the enchanted rats (e. rats) have to be adjacent to a diseased rat (d. rats) in order to cure them, correct? In that case, what about the healthy rats (h. rats)? Do the e. rats need to be next to an h. rat to keep it healthy? If you could post what the briefing says, I should be able to work it out.

Decided to take up the challenge, didja? Well, I can't expect an answer, really, because we haven't documented enough grids, but here are the rules, in brief:

(1) The three jars containing enchanted rats must be placed on an empty Tile.

(2) Placing an enchanted jar on a tile does two things: (a) places a healthy rat on that space; (b) cures all diseased rats located vertically or horizontally between the new rat and any other healthy rat.

(3) Once an enchanted jar is placed, you can't move it.

(4) If all rats have been cured, give all three empty jars to Veltare.

Kadthar here,

The statements along the lines that the rat placement is different every time is unlikely. Some rat arrangements would not allow possible solutions even with three enchanted rats. However it is likely that there are multiple rat setups for the grid, some finite number. The setup I got a few days ago when I did the quest was the same as the one listed in the quest description above. Also, the player who claims authoritatively that there are no more quests after this may well be mistaken. I have seen no evidence that this is the last quest, though in all likelihood, if there are more, they will get progressively harder, perhaps the last one ending up in the Plane of Disease, or with its opening. Probably more stats than the four it improves will be added to the badge as it goes on, as well as perhaps resists. (That's all just a guess though.)
My guess on the final badge is AC 15 +10 to all stats +10 to all resists +50 HP +50 mana and regeneration. (Or haste or foot speed increase but those are probably just wishful thinking. :o) However, either would make the Qeynos badge and the Coldain ring and shawl not overlap in abilities, for those who might do all three, a possible benefit in the quest makers' eyes.)
Level 40 seems about right for Oobnopterbevny. She was red to me, but her pet was blue. A level 50 + rogue in Kael armor who was there for Froon and Choon helped me fight her. (Thanks, by the way.) :o) She of course started by fearing him, me, and my pet. Fortunately while I was running I was not attacked as she only feared me after i sent my pet after hers. When I came around I found my pet (dying by this time to her pet) and nuked her pet to death, being dangerously wounded myself. The rogue finished Oobnopterbevny herself off, though if her pet was on him he might have had more trouble.

The game is indeed different for everyone. It works just like Othello. The only tough part about the game was giving the Enchanted Rats to the right "Tiles". But given the 6 Norrath hours to complete the quest you shouldn't have a problem.

Just make sure no one attacks the rats, or the tiles. It can mess up the quest is any of them die. I had a level 1 necro state "give me plat or I'll attack". I don't think you can actually attack the tiles or rats, but I'd be careful anycase. :)

Where did you you hear this? I wouldn't think that a badge would be the final reward in this series of quests. In fact, it follows right along with the rest of the steps. Each badge has been a proof of accomplishment to continue on to the next step.

The next step may or may not be in the game yet, but IMO there will be a next step.

I am sure. If there are any more parts of this quest left, even if they arn't patched in, the Cleric would have said if there was a next step. The Investigator talked about the 2nd part of the quest before the 2nd part was even patched in.

More importantly Vegalys would have more things to say about advancing further other than the interrogator and the research.

That isn't necessarily true. The additional quests after the first had no information given until they had placed them. Each further quest shows up after a patch. Velarte only gave any information on the researcher's badge after a recent patch. Vegalys would say nothing about the second badge until after a patch some weeks ago. Check the paper each patch and there may well be new information.

Actually, the gnome travels. Her spawn point is on the west wall and she travels in a diagonal path to neg300, on the east wall...where she immediately despawns. During that path she will walk directly over Choon (use a map and a ruler...you can find her spawn point). She doesn't like him so they will fight. She and her pet kill choon pretty fast. This does, however, weaken her a bit so that someone who is lvl 40 (which is her lvl BTW) has a shot at her.

Tooling up with MR helped a lot.

Someone already replied stating that the rat pattern changes each time. This is correct. I have done/helped do this quest a number of times. They were seldom the same pattern.

Also of note is the statement that you have 6 hours to complete the quest. It is possible that if you mess up in the end and place an empty jar in an open tile you can go get the gnome and get yourself the proper jar without having to do the whole thing over. But once you start the test, you have 6 hours of game time to finish it.

I agree. It is about time the Verant team got off of their lazy butts and started doing something clever. Even though the reward here is not that great, I think it makes the second best quest in-game to date.

The first? Well, it's got to be the Deck of Spontaneous Generation. This had the greatest potential of a time sink for this game. It amazes me that Verant would do something so stupid as to place it in a place where very few people can go.

The necro gnome in WK is on a 1 hour RL spawn timer.

YES!!! Finally a quest in which people have to actually THINK!!! And better yet it isn't planar quest either; not like the PoM armor quests in which you have to mix and mach certain items for your uber armors. I wonder if verant will do this with the epic armor quests rumored to be released with the SoL expansion come december. I perfer a quest like this rather than one in which you have to just run around and kill for/buy the items you need and find the spoilers on the internet. never thought i'd hear myself say this but.....WTG VERANT!!!

First Puzzle in the game

This quest is the first actual puzzle put into the entire game. The Pattern of the 8 slots are always different. The above description was not the same as the layout I had. I screwed up the first time I did the quest, and aside from having to start over, I found that my puzzle was different the next time.

This puzzle is the end of the quest. There are no more after this.

Well then it looks like you'll have to actually use some intelligence to be a researcher, instead of just researching the answer here.

The pattern of the rats is different each time you do it. I should know, I messed up first and had to redo whole quest from the start. :(
