  • At the end of the previous quest, Betti Frostweaver told you to show your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl to Gilthan.

Gilthan Brittleblade says 'So, you've been chosen to attempt the rune, eh? Been ages since anyone's even made an attempt. The rune represents the very essence of our people, our culture, and our religion. Take a sea shell runed with enduring breath and a small brick of velium and grind them together in a mortar and pestle. Add water to the powder and model the rune. Fire the rune with water and the best of firing sheets. Show the product to Trademaster Kroven.'

  • Head off to Siren's Grotto and kill Sirens until you get a Runed Sea Shell with one charge of Enduring Breath.

  • Combine the Sea Shell and a small brick of velium in a Mortar and Pestle (if you are a rogue) or in a Mixing Bowl (any class) to get an Enchanted Velium Powder (No-Fail Combine).

  • Now combine the Enchanted Velium Powder and a Water Flask in a pottery wheel to get an Unfired Rune (Pottery Trivial 162).

  • Combine the Unfired Rune with a High Quality Firing Sheet and Water Flask in a kiln to receive a Blank Rune (Pottery Trivial 15).

  • Now show the rune to Trademaster Kroven (also in the Thurgadin Exchange).

Trademaster Kroven says 'Fine piece of work there, _____, especially fer an outlander. Now yer gunna need to make a burin to etch the rune with. Once that's done ye need to kneel in the chapel and recite this prayer with total sincerity in yer heart. If yer plea be heard by our Father Brell he'll bless ya with the knowledge necessary to carry on. With that knowledge you'll take the blank rune, the burin and a fletching kit to etch the rune. Show Grimthor the etched rune and he'll guide you from there.'

  • Receive a Prayer to Brell.

    You say, 'What burin?'

Trademaster Kroven says 'You'll need a fletching kit and a fair bit of skill for this one, _____. Round up a tooth from a swordfish and attatch it to an Ulthork tusk wrapped in a Molkor hide.'

  • Head to Siren's Grotto and get a swordfish tooth from the swordfish and a molkor hide from the molkors. You can also get ulthork tusks there but they're much easier to get in eastern wastes where you can kill the low level ulthorks for their tusks. The swordfish tooth is NO DROP which is the only item actually forcing you to go into Siren's Grotto.

  • Combine the tusk, swordfish tooth, and hide in a fletching kit to get Burin (Fletching Trivial 135).

  • Go to the room where the quest started with the Grand Historian. Make sure Grand Historian Thoridain is in the room and stand at /loc -343.61, 803.92, -17.11, target yourself and then say the following prayer until you see a message saying you've been inspired:

You say, 'Oh Brell, Thank you for protecting me and seeing me through my trials. Forgive me for the things I think and say and do that displease you. Please reveal to me your will and bless me with the patience and obedience to do that which you desire. Amen.'

You have been inspired. The sacred pattern of the Coldain rune materializes on the ground before you.

  • On the floor in front of the Historian is an Etched Rune Pattern at /loc -319.28, 793.04, -17.11. This pattern needs to be combined with the Burin and Rune in a fletching kit. This makes an Etched Rune (Fletching Trivia 168).

  • Show your Etched Rune to Grimthor by the brew barrel in Thurgadin.

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'That looks about right. You're moving along well outlander. Next you'll be needin to brew up a sacred ink to fill the grooves in your rune. Take Iceclad Cutlass fish oil, liquid velium, and some Royal Kromrif blood, brew them in the barrel here then take the product and the rune and combine them in a fletching kit. Show Talem Tucker the resulting item if yer successful.

You say, 'What cutlass fish oil?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Grab a pole and fish the waters in Iceclad until you catch yourself three Iceclad Cutlass fish. Place them in this oil extractor and you'll have whatcha need.'

    You say, 'What liquid velium?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Collect a small piece of velium and a bottle of rubbing alcohol and brew them together in a barrel. It aint easy, but it should prove to be a minor task for the likes of you.'

  • Receive Fish Oil Extractor, a four-slot container.

  • Fish in Iceclad until you get three Cutlass Fish and combine them in the extractor (Fishing No-Fail Combine). This results in Cutlassfish Oil.

  • Find some Rubbing Alcohol (bought from either the Mortician in Cabilis or at the Icy Mug in Thurgadin - west of the four-way on your map). Combine the rubbing alcohol and a small piece of velium in a brew barrel to get Liquid Velium (Brewing Trivia 135).

  • Get some Royal Kromrif Blood from Iceshard Manor in Kael Drakkel.

  • Combine the Liquid Velium, Fish Oil and Royal Kromrif Blood in a brew barrel. This results in a Sacred Velium Ink (Brewing Trivial 168).

  • Combine the ink and rune in a fletching kit to get a Velium Etched Rune (Fletching Trivial 168).

  • Go to the jewelry store in Thurgadin by the Exchange. Show your rune to Talem Tucter.

Talem Tucter says 'I've heard of your mission, _____. I must admit that I had my doubts you'd make it this far. The rune's creation is nearly impossible for even the most skilled of Coldain craftsmen. You should be exceedingly proud. Many have attempted this feat and nearly all have lacked the skill, faith, patience and persistence that is prerequisite for what destiny holds in store for you. You are now ready to use this pattern to construct the sacred rune's casing and complete the runed shawl.'

    You say, 'What casing?'

Talem Tucter says 'Combine two platinum bars, a small piece of velium and the casing pattern in a Jeweler's kit. Take the completed casing and the rune and combine them in the same kit. When this is done all that's left is to tailor the rune to the shawl with the pattern. Take the finished product to Borannin, I'm sure he's eager to speak with you.'

  • Talem really means Loremaster Solstrin.

  • You receive a Rune Casing Pattern. Combine this pattern, a Small Piece of Velium and two Platinum Bars in a Jewelry Kit to receive the Rune Casing (Jewelry Trivial 152).

  • Now combine the casing and the rune in a Jewelry Kit to receive an Encased Velium Etched Rune (Jewelry Trivial 162).

  • Take the Encased Velium Etched Rune, Runed Prayer Shawl Pattern, and your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl. Combine them in a tailoring kit to receive your 7th Shawl: Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl (Tailoring Trivial 162).

  • You can then go show Loremaster Solstrin your 7th shawl. Do NOT hand his your shawl until you have read the steps for the 8th shawl.

Loremaster Solstrin says 'Incredible! Never before has an outlander been skilled and determined enough to craft our sacred rune. You are now worthy of the Dain's most perilous task. You should seek an audience with the Dain immediately. Show him your Runed Prayer Shawl, he will give you the task that has been prepared for you. If the Dain is away show your Shawl to Chamberlain Krystorf and he will call for him.'

Well, finished up tonight. couple things I would like to make everyone aware of to help since this site helped me so much. First, the Royal Kromrif Blood dropped twice. Both times was in house above lake near throne room off of a spawn named Varken Iceshard. The last name, Iceshard, is the name of the spawns that pop at throne itself. Secondly, weirdly I did 6th shawl in tailoring kit at 163 skill and it was not trivial. However, when I did last part of 7th in tailoring kit at 163 it WAS trivial. Good luck.

why complain about the cost of raising jewelcraft?
    # Jul 22 2001 at 7:13 AM Rating: Default
why do you all complain about the cost it takes to raise jewelcraft? 2k tops if you have max int/ or wis to get to 170.

tailoring costs FAR more to raise to just 158.

    consider this:
as someone said it took him aproximately 263 vials of viscous mana to get from crystaline silk to the wus trivial point. at 7.5 pp per vial, raw cost... it costs 1973 pp to raise tailoring to just *158*. thats not considering the 50pp per stack of silk that you buy from newbies.
    this shawl trivials at 190.
now consider to have a real chance at succeeding the combine on your first try and not just damn lucky your skill must be 170. thats 12 more points needed at roughly 50pp per ATTEMPT if you are going the wyvern hide route which is easier to gather materials for, or going the more difficult way with the black panther skin route, which is 27pp per attempt. i have no idea how many attempts it would take to get 12 skill points at 27 to 50pp per attempt, but im guessing lots.

anyway the point is to raise tailoring up to 170, it would cost you about 5k, not to mention hours and hours and HUNDREDS of hours gathering components. whereas jewelcraft to 170 is only 2k, and ONE hour, in one store.

i *wish* this were more centered around jewel craft than tailoring.

What is the comparison between Flowuing thought and clarity
    RE: Effect
    # Jul 21 2001 at 2:40 PM Rating: Default
    Clarity II is 11 mana/tick
    Clarity is 7 mana/tick
    Breeze is 2 mana/tick
Flowing Thought I is 1 mana/tick (yup, just one), but it stacks with absolutely everything else.

I am just reading up on this, so that I can dream, I'm still a newb, I admit it. But just because the person who sent this in says that all these items you have to make are trivial, does that mean that they trivial at those levels of skill, or does it mean that he/she HAS those ranks of skill, and that they were already trivial when attempted??? Just a thought, might not have to be a master jeweler after all...

Jewelrycraft is absolutely usless unless you are a chanter. Flethcing is also pretty useless unless you use arrows, and since this is for casters and mixed types :P except for rangers, I don't see much point in any class doing this.

Irony here is that Verant spams the whole - eq is group oriented you must depend on others to lvl - down our throats, but I can't hire a chanter who has a mastery in jewlery to make this item for me, I have to do it myself. So much for applying the grouping theory to tradeskills :P

I have no problem with the items being such high skill lvl required (well maybe a *tiny* problem) but its absurd to get jewelcraft up. Its nothing but a money pit for any non enchanter. /shrug

you also forgot that now we have 2000 people going for this shawl now there are lots of people working on trade skills. if there are that many people workin on this crap then wont that drive down prices in all trade skills? makeing trade skills worthless again if you want to use it to make plat? isnt that why EQ is making new parts to trade skills so that the tradeskill system is not worthless?

#Anonymous, Posted: Jul 17 2001 at 2:30 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Finally... When I got Re-started on Povar, I decided to make a wizard and perfect all the tradeskills that I could possibly do. With no tradeskill below 130 currently, I am at the 6th teir of this quest. I am currently bottlenecked due to my level ( a 42 wizard killing sirens?? ) but I have my tradeskills at ALMOST appropriate levels for the rest of the way. Getting JC up was the most expensive, and Tailoring the most time consuming. HINT: do Crystaline silk shirts until trivial at 131 ( 3 CS swatches, 1 silver thread and a tunic pattern ). With an INT of 212, WIS of 103 and (poor me) CHA of 80, I have had little trouble with any of this. I just finished the 5th shawl and have the whiskers, beard and am now working on the manes. Keep working at it... Heck.. I got all the items/skills at level 42, you can too. And remember, this is a GAME. Everyone plays dif't. Respect that and play to your own style. I coulda been level 50 by now, but I spent time/cash on tradeskills. You won't hear me complain.

I was and still am going to do this quest I just need to get some more cash to get jewel craft started =(. I spent about 40pp to get Baking to 135, should take about that for Brewing, the others I'm not to sure about... Oh well, I really hope the reward is as great as it seems or I will be a little bit pissed off

You can get crystalline silks in Crystal Caverns for the fifth shawl as well. They drop off the spiders in the bottom near the queen.

You don't need silks for this unless you are simply using them to get your skill up. the fifth shawl requires threads that seem to drop only in Velketors from the crystalline spideys there.

BTW, on the 7th shawl, I made the burin with a skill of 137 fletching, at which point it is trivial.

I understand why verant did it this way, and it follows the risk/reward guidelines perfectly. But why force people to learn tradeskills? Why not make the steps inbetween have items that are not no-drop? Tradeskills are supposed to be profitable/usefull between players, and this would have been a perfect way for it to be done. Instead of learning jewelcraft yourself, you seek out a jewler and have them make the attempt. You already know what the result is supposed to be, so in a group you even know if the person succeded or failed on the attempt. But no, they make most of the intermediary items NO DROP forcing everyone who wants one of these new items to become tradesmen, even if they will NEVER use the skills again.

i dont understand why everyone complaines about jewelcraft, it only costs about 1000 to 1500pp to raise JC to around 175 and all the items you need are in one shop, i found JC to be as fast to raise as baking (took me about 2hrs to go from 0 to 175, and about 1200pp).

Now I Have seen this posted more than once, Can anyone care to explain how to get jewelry craft up to the 170ish range with only 2k pp?

I for one do not believe you people have done your accounting properly to ba able to get it to that range so cheaply.

Since very little of this quest requires that you turn in item xxx to a certain mob to get yyy in return, I don't see much multiquesting potential here. Almost everything is 'loot this nodrop item and combine it with these other items in a sewing kit' or some such where you have to click the combine button to make an item to turn in to the quest mob.

    # Jul 06 2001 at 12:00 PM Rating: Decent
Creating the powder in the mortar and pestle (from Gindlin Toxfodder (-2989 , -13399) in West Karana) was trivial at 148 pottery.

Creating the unfired rune was not trivial at 148.

Firing the rune was trivial at 148.
    Trivials
    # Jul 06 2001 at 2:28 AM Rating: Good
I succeeded on my attempt to make this shawl and thought I'd share my scores.

    Pottery - 170 - Trivial
    Fletching - 187 - Trivial
    Brewing - 165 - Trivial
    Jewel Craft - 173 - Trivial
    Tailoring - 158 - NOT trivial

On tailoring, 158 is as high as you can get via the set of Wu's armor. Doing Wu's armor to this level took me 263 vials of viscous mana.
