  • At the end of the previous quest, Betti Frostweaver told you to show your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl to Gilthan.

Gilthan Brittleblade says 'So, you've been chosen to attempt the rune, eh? Been ages since anyone's even made an attempt. The rune represents the very essence of our people, our culture, and our religion. Take a sea shell runed with enduring breath and a small brick of velium and grind them together in a mortar and pestle. Add water to the powder and model the rune. Fire the rune with water and the best of firing sheets. Show the product to Trademaster Kroven.'

  • Head off to Siren's Grotto and kill Sirens until you get a Runed Sea Shell with one charge of Enduring Breath.

  • Combine the Sea Shell and a small brick of velium in a Mortar and Pestle (if you are a rogue) or in a Mixing Bowl (any class) to get an Enchanted Velium Powder (No-Fail Combine).

  • Now combine the Enchanted Velium Powder and a Water Flask in a pottery wheel to get an Unfired Rune (Pottery Trivial 162).

  • Combine the Unfired Rune with a High Quality Firing Sheet and Water Flask in a kiln to receive a Blank Rune (Pottery Trivial 15).

  • Now show the rune to Trademaster Kroven (also in the Thurgadin Exchange).

Trademaster Kroven says 'Fine piece of work there, _____, especially fer an outlander. Now yer gunna need to make a burin to etch the rune with. Once that's done ye need to kneel in the chapel and recite this prayer with total sincerity in yer heart. If yer plea be heard by our Father Brell he'll bless ya with the knowledge necessary to carry on. With that knowledge you'll take the blank rune, the burin and a fletching kit to etch the rune. Show Grimthor the etched rune and he'll guide you from there.'

  • Receive a Prayer to Brell.

    You say, 'What burin?'

Trademaster Kroven says 'You'll need a fletching kit and a fair bit of skill for this one, _____. Round up a tooth from a swordfish and attatch it to an Ulthork tusk wrapped in a Molkor hide.'

  • Head to Siren's Grotto and get a swordfish tooth from the swordfish and a molkor hide from the molkors. You can also get ulthork tusks there but they're much easier to get in eastern wastes where you can kill the low level ulthorks for their tusks. The swordfish tooth is NO DROP which is the only item actually forcing you to go into Siren's Grotto.

  • Combine the tusk, swordfish tooth, and hide in a fletching kit to get Burin (Fletching Trivial 135).

  • Go to the room where the quest started with the Grand Historian. Make sure Grand Historian Thoridain is in the room and stand at /loc -343.61, 803.92, -17.11, target yourself and then say the following prayer until you see a message saying you've been inspired:

You say, 'Oh Brell, Thank you for protecting me and seeing me through my trials. Forgive me for the things I think and say and do that displease you. Please reveal to me your will and bless me with the patience and obedience to do that which you desire. Amen.'

You have been inspired. The sacred pattern of the Coldain rune materializes on the ground before you.

  • On the floor in front of the Historian is an Etched Rune Pattern at /loc -319.28, 793.04, -17.11. This pattern needs to be combined with the Burin and Rune in a fletching kit. This makes an Etched Rune (Fletching Trivia 168).

  • Show your Etched Rune to Grimthor by the brew barrel in Thurgadin.

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'That looks about right. You're moving along well outlander. Next you'll be needin to brew up a sacred ink to fill the grooves in your rune. Take Iceclad Cutlass fish oil, liquid velium, and some Royal Kromrif blood, brew them in the barrel here then take the product and the rune and combine them in a fletching kit. Show Talem Tucker the resulting item if yer successful.

You say, 'What cutlass fish oil?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Grab a pole and fish the waters in Iceclad until you catch yourself three Iceclad Cutlass fish. Place them in this oil extractor and you'll have whatcha need.'

    You say, 'What liquid velium?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Collect a small piece of velium and a bottle of rubbing alcohol and brew them together in a barrel. It aint easy, but it should prove to be a minor task for the likes of you.'

  • Receive Fish Oil Extractor, a four-slot container.

  • Fish in Iceclad until you get three Cutlass Fish and combine them in the extractor (Fishing No-Fail Combine). This results in Cutlassfish Oil.

  • Find some Rubbing Alcohol (bought from either the Mortician in Cabilis or at the Icy Mug in Thurgadin - west of the four-way on your map). Combine the rubbing alcohol and a small piece of velium in a brew barrel to get Liquid Velium (Brewing Trivia 135).

  • Get some Royal Kromrif Blood from Iceshard Manor in Kael Drakkel.

  • Combine the Liquid Velium, Fish Oil and Royal Kromrif Blood in a brew barrel. This results in a Sacred Velium Ink (Brewing Trivial 168).

  • Combine the ink and rune in a fletching kit to get a Velium Etched Rune (Fletching Trivial 168).

  • Go to the jewelry store in Thurgadin by the Exchange. Show your rune to Talem Tucter.

Talem Tucter says 'I've heard of your mission, _____. I must admit that I had my doubts you'd make it this far. The rune's creation is nearly impossible for even the most skilled of Coldain craftsmen. You should be exceedingly proud. Many have attempted this feat and nearly all have lacked the skill, faith, patience and persistence that is prerequisite for what destiny holds in store for you. You are now ready to use this pattern to construct the sacred rune's casing and complete the runed shawl.'

    You say, 'What casing?'

Talem Tucter says 'Combine two platinum bars, a small piece of velium and the casing pattern in a Jeweler's kit. Take the completed casing and the rune and combine them in the same kit. When this is done all that's left is to tailor the rune to the shawl with the pattern. Take the finished product to Borannin, I'm sure he's eager to speak with you.'

  • Talem really means Loremaster Solstrin.

  • You receive a Rune Casing Pattern. Combine this pattern, a Small Piece of Velium and two Platinum Bars in a Jewelry Kit to receive the Rune Casing (Jewelry Trivial 152).

  • Now combine the casing and the rune in a Jewelry Kit to receive an Encased Velium Etched Rune (Jewelry Trivial 162).

  • Take the Encased Velium Etched Rune, Runed Prayer Shawl Pattern, and your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl. Combine them in a tailoring kit to receive your 7th Shawl: Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl (Tailoring Trivial 162).

  • You can then go show Loremaster Solstrin your 7th shawl. Do NOT hand his your shawl until you have read the steps for the 8th shawl.

Loremaster Solstrin says 'Incredible! Never before has an outlander been skilled and determined enough to craft our sacred rune. You are now worthy of the Dain's most perilous task. You should seek an audience with the Dain immediately. Show him your Runed Prayer Shawl, he will give you the task that has been prepared for you. If the Dain is away show your Shawl to Chamberlain Krystorf and he will call for him.'

    I few tips for 5-7
    # Feb 20 2002 at 3:38 AM Rating: Decent
    I finaly did it!

    https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=6079

A few tips reguarding the shawls...

**1-4 are easy just follow the quests too a T

**# 5 is hard because the silks a hard too get outa VL, what I did was run around from grp too grp too grp asking them if I could loot them and almost every grp was more then happy too allow me too after about 6 hours (and a lvl 60 monk helping) I got all the silks i needed too make the 5th.

The biles we're a bit of a challenge in the sence that they are a rare drop, i was so antsy too get the last bile that I /auc WTB looting rights too glowing wurm bile 300pp and finaly got a tell 2 hours later.

I combined the 5th with 170 Tailoring but many have done it with the base ease of 158. I would sugjest finding your local gnome too make you a 5% tailoring device.

Congratz you now have a shawl that can never go away.

**# 6 Walk in the park. 1st off u need a frost giant beard and 2 no drop whiskers from wolves in GD. Just hunt the wolves and /auc WTB frost giant beard 50pp while doing it. at the most ull spend 2 hours doing this.

Then you need 2 Manticore manes - Now most peeps think they only spawn at GD/EW zone but I hunted then from the Zone too sleeper (the dragon statue south of ry'***** fort) and there are about 6 or so up at a time, they hit HARD so kite em if you can.

Siren hairs were a bit tricky. You need high MR too kite em from CS, I sugest bringing a cleric and a druid along too help, the drops are about 1 in 10 for hairs.

Once again grab your gnomish device and combine the beard hairs whiskers and manes, then combine that with your 5th shawl, but dont worry if you fail you get 5th back.

**# 7 I failed the 1st time around because I didnt have the gnomish device.

1st thing you should focus on is the no drop tooth from SG, once you have this the rest is just being in the right place right time and right ammount of $. The Swordfish can be pulled too CS zone, we had a lvl 52 chanter mez pull. cause once you jump out of the water they will not follow you. So the casters would jump in, Nuke/Dot/Debuff get agro and jump out, while tank and cleric stayed under keeping em bussy. I was lvl 53, highest in the grp, and the seahorses coned white.

The runed shell from SG can be purchased for about 1kpp but its few and far between, I sugjest posting on your local sever board under tradeing/selling.

While your at it post WTB Royal Kromrif Blood, this sells anywhere from 3-5kpp. I was lucky the 1st time I tried and got it for 1kpp but when i failed and started /aucing again I ended up buying it for 4kpp =(

The rest is easy just follow the quest guide and make sure your skills are at the appropreate lvl.

Final combine with wis buff from local chanter, crossed fingers and GNOMISH DEVICE <----- a must, and poof welcome too crack country!

    Good luck all!

Nice guide, but one little point. You don't need the wisdom buff, unless you were hoping for a skillup from the combine. Your chance of success depends only on your current skill level, the trivial of the item, and the dreaded random number generator.

Wisdom/Intelligence (higher one) helps you skill up faster, but doesn't affect success.
    Sirens and wizards
    # Mar 25 2002 at 1:16 PM Rating: Decent
Sirens are nasty, aye, but they have relatively low HP. Wizards get at lvl 55 Draught of Jiva, which is a regular magic based DD with integrated stun effect, or at least the chance of a stun. Armed with this and a MR of 214 I was able to solo any (yes, even deep blue) sirens. (This was buffed with GRM and a a mage summoned shoulder piece `(+15 svf, svc, sfm), what everyone can easily get). Dont forget to look for a SOE.
1: 214 mr doesnt prevent you from getting hit or charmed, but still you resist most spells. Make sure you warn everyone in zone that a mad wizard is at work there...
2: Nuke, nuke, keep nuking... to interrupt is better than to resist.
3: I was able to single pull the 3spawn from above (used staff of temperate flux).

    Trivial levels
    # Feb 12 2002 at 7:59 AM Rating: Excellent
Having trawled through these posts for information on the trivial levels, I compiled the following information.

Having not done this quest yet I have been unable to verify them, but it serves as a guide.

Remember, when combining important items you should try to exceed the trivial level. An extra 20 skill is a good rule of thumb.

    Enchanted Velium powder (Pottery <152)
    Unfired Rune (Pottery 152..170)
    Blank Rune (Pottery <152)
    Burin (Fletching <172)
    Etched Rune (Fletching <172)
    Cutlassfish oil (Brewing 167..168)
    Liquid Velium (Brewing <135)
    Sacred Velium Ink (Brewing 143..167)
    Velium etched Rune (Fletching <172)
    The Casing (Jewelcraft <170)
Encased Velium etched Rune (Jewelcraft <170)
Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl (Tailoring 162..167)

POTG (6 Mana per tick) + Shawl (1 Mana per tick) + C3 (14 mana per tick) + Mask of the Hunter/Stalker (+3 mana) + Spirit of the Oak (+4 mana)

As far as I know, Spirit and Mask's will stack, seeing as Mask doesnt alter speed at all...Hmm, it does shrink ya tho.

Without Spirit: 24 mana per tick
With Spirit/without mask: 25 Mana per tick
With both (if possible, not sure, i dont have mask yet hehe): 28 mana per tick.

Dr00ds's got ya beat man ;)

    A cleric does pretty good...

Blessed Armor of the Risen: 6 mana regen per tick
    Koadic's Endless Intellect (C3): 13 mana regen
    Shawl: 1 mana regen
Total: 20 mana regen a tick (not counting AA)

Blessed Armor of the Risen is better than PotG because it stacks with Aegolism.

Have you seen the new spell for Necromancers yet?

    Spell:: Ancient: Master of Death
    Level:: 60
    Effects:: Self: Spectre Form
Self: Increase Mana (44 per tick)
Self: Lose Hitpoints (63 per tick)
    Self: See Invisible + Ultravision

I know that losing 63 HPs per tick is a LOT to lose, but if you're in a group with a healer of some sort, this can be the ultimate form of mana regen.

hehe Sweet, with a mana regen regen like they can just keep life tapping to keep life up, maybe healer through a heal every now and then.

ok lets do the math, a good lvl 60 necromancer has buffed 3900 hps, atleast the ones in my guild do. same as a well equiped cleric, mabey alittle more than the cleric.

with all the nifty spells they get for self heal over time, and elder holgres beads, the 63 per tick health loss is nothing....

    Finally!
    # Jan 07 2002 at 8:16 PM Rating: Excellent
I finally completed the 7th shawl last night and can gratefully say I didn't fail on this one. Below are my skills at the time of the combine. All were trivial except Brewing, which I completely forgot to increase before attempting the combine, duh. I did however succeed on the Brewing portion of the quest (Thank you Innoruuk!) and even raised a point, heh.

    Tailoring 162 (trivial)
    Fletching 190 (trivial)
    Brewing 143 (NOT trivial)
    Jewel Craft 186 (trivial)
    Pottery 188 (trivial)

The scariest part for me was handing in my 6th shawl to the people it says to in the walkthrough. My heart stopped everytime I hit that trade button. As reassurance to those attempting this part of the quest, hand the items in exactly as described in the walkthrough. when you click trade they WILL give your 6th shawl right back to you.

For those just starting the shawl quests, you should know the length of time it takes each person to get from 1st to 7th shawl will vary based on the individual from weeks to months. Also, If you consider there will be 3 more stages to the shawl, it will definitely be worth the effort when Verant implements the quests up to the 10th shawl.

Collecting the items for the 7th and currently final shawl weren't as tedious as I had initially expected.

"Swordfish Tooth" - I was expecting the most difficult piece to aquire would be the swordfish tooth, which turned out to actually be fairly simple. In the pool near the Western Wastes zoneline in Sirens Grotto there is a single servant swordfish that swims around in there (I have heard there can sometimes be 2 though). I actually attempted to solo it and had the bugger down to the "A" of a Servant Swordfish before having to make a break for the zoneline. I called in a necro and cleric friend the same level as me and it was a cakewalk to take him down. Looted the No-Drop tooth. If you have a small group bring a slower along and fight him near the center of the pool to avoid the one pat that wanders between the hut and the falls. We were in and out in under 10 mins.

"Royal Kromriff Blood" - This item can be purchased from other players as it's "NOT" No-Drop, or can be picked up relatively easy from your standard Kael Raid that pulls the Noble house. Both Vorken and Klaggan Iceshard drop the blood.

"Runed Sea Shell" - I hate Sirens ... So, I purchased this part of the quest from another player. If you decide you want to camp for it head off to Sirens Grotto with a "GOOD" group. You may have to kill a lot of them to get the proper shell as the Sirens drop various different forms of sea shells.

I hope someone finds some of this information useful. I have the utmost respect for anyone who has gotten this far in this nightmarish quest. Remember this, when you feel like giving up and the tradeskills start to get annoyingly tedious and time consuming - Words cannot describe the sense of accomplishment you'll feel having finally completed the quest, knowing that "You" created this item.

    Good luck to all ...

Bad things still can happen at high skill levels. Just so that you are aware, i have 198 fleching and still managed to fail combineing the swordfish tooth, hide , and tusks. Then when i did it again, it worked and was trivial. Dunno why, just bum luck i guess, but i had 252 int, 144 wis 160 dex at the time. Go figure Aznon Deathtoll (fennin ro)
    35th level..

yeah..you could do the first 3 with some help. The range item you get is pretty good at your level for completing the 3rd shawl as well.

Easy Way to spawn the Rune Pattern
    # Dec 06 2001 at 7:20 AM Rating: Decent
Go to the left corner, hold a coin and click till u can trade. The invi npc's name is "YOU". If "YOU" is there, say the pray and there you go. If "YOU" is not there, don't even bother to type all those message, cuz it's useless. I learn this from a friend, wish I'v known this earlier instead of spamming the room for hours. lol.

As for the shawl, Lucky me (human SK) made it with full int gear (210 int) and normal dex, no buffs at all. Was sitting in FP bank making the damn wu's. Made 8 Wu's leg with no fail at 146 skill and ran out of silks. So I just pick up the rune and 6th shawl and hit the combine without thinking. And.... I got it ! with a skill point too. So I have the 8th shawl and 147 tailoring skill. Yeah, I'm lucky, and I'm getting ready to do the quest again for my newly made lv 24 Wizzy, and he's ready for 4th shawl once he get the trade skill up.

Wish everyone else can be as lucky as I do. And I'm waiting for the new shawl quest to come out. :)

I walked in, said it a couple times, and found the pattern on the floor in front of the stage.

A guildmate tried early the next day and spammed for several hours. I went to help and spammed the place for another couple hours.

He logged, and came back a few minutes past 24 hours after I got mine, and he got it right away.

So, I suspect it's only spawnable every 24 hours (or 12 if someone else got it in between)

I've heard that you get the Burin back if you fail on th 7th shawl. Getting the swordfish tooth will be the heardeswt part for me. My tailoring is 145. Instead of spending another 20 hours raising tailoring, can I just attemnpt it a bunch at 145? I assume if I failed all I'd have to do is get some more kromrif blood, alcohol, and the other easy ingredients to try again. And eventually I'd get lucky and maybe only go througfh 2 or 3 kromrif bloods. Would this work?

so that might be the case here.

Personally, I'd rather have a higher level Flowing Thought on the shawl, than Clarity. The Breeze/clarity/clarity2 line don't stack with each other. The Flowing Thought line stacks with everything, I believe. Do correct me if I'm wrong.

Hoping that the FT effect will increase by one each shawl after 7.....If the tenth shawl has FT 4, very nice indeed.

I've seen posted trivial levels for all the skill on many sights including this one. I decided to not take my skill that high and hope they were trivial at lower levels. I wrote down the results a month ago when i got my shawl and my skill levels at that time. Here's my results:

Enchanted Velium Powder - Trivial at Pottery 170
Unfired Rune - Trivial at Pottery 170
Blank Rune - Trivial at Pottery 170
Burin - Trivial at Fletching 172
Etched Rune - Trivial at Fletching 172
Cutlassfish Oil - **NOT** Trivial at Brewing 167
Liquid Velium - Trivial at Brewing 167
Sacred Velium Ink - Trivial at Brewing 167
Velium Etched Rune - Trivial at Fletching 172
The Casing - Trivial at Jewelry 170
Encased Velium Etched Rune - Trivial at Jewelry 170
Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl - Trivial at Tailoring 167

Note: Someone else posted the brewing part was all trivial at 168. Someone else posted the tailoring to be trivial at 161.

I made a liquid velium for my friend and got a skill-up to 135. Made another for myself, trivial. Liquid Velium combine=trivial at 135 Brewing.

What skills do we need in total?? Fleching, Brewing, Pottery, Tailoring, Jewerly, and Backing. That is all i have seen so far everyone say. What about Smithing, is that needed for anything in this quest? Also I have been working on all my skills, just going to max them out if i can to be safe, or do i even really need to do that?

For the third shawl you have to make a "pot" to make a stew. Smithing trivial for it is 110.

    # Mar 10 2002 at 11:42 AM Rating: Default
Though you can also make a pot using pottery and a much lower skill at that. (Pot in pottery is trivial around 56).

You still need to make metal bits for it but that's one of the easiest items in smithing to make.
    rune not trivial at 123

I just got a skillpoint in pottery when I combined the powder and water to get my rune. Glady got the rune ;-)

In answer to your questions, follow the steps EXACTLY as outlined above. When they tell you to turn in your shawl, do so. Hand the item to the NPCs and then complete the trade. They will immediately give you the shawl back.

Whoever was going crazy down there with the stats on their flowing thought, look in spdat with the parser program. Flowing Thought I gives 1 mana per tick. That's it. Here's hoping the 10th shawl gives us at least a Flowing thought IV (4).
