At the end of the previous quest, Rexx Frostweaver told you to speak to his wife Betti regarding the embroidered shawl.

You say, 'Hail, Betti Frostweaver'

Betti Frostweaver says 'Well, hello there, dear, it sure gets cold here, doesn't it? Perhaps I can interest you in a sewing pattern to pass the time and keep you warm.'

You say, 'I am here regarding the embroidered shawl.'

You receive an Embroided Shawl Pattern.

Betti Frostweaver says 'It will be an honor to assist you in fashioning an embroidered shawl. It is a very demanding product and I can see from the look in your eyes that you desire to burn your sewing kit in our furnace, but if you persevere, your efforts will be richly rewarded. When you are ready you must carefully weave a spool of sacred Coldain thread. Take the thread, this pattern, and the silk shawl and carefully embroider the pattern. The result will be most exquisite. Please show me if you manage to create one.'

You say, 'What sacred Coldain thread?'

Betti Frostweaver says 'Take a woven frost giant beard, two siren's hairs, two manticore manes and two Drakkel dire wolf whiskers, and combine them in a sewing kit. The resulting thread will enhance your shawl's power when embroidered in a special pattern.'

The Woven Frost Giant Beard is an uncommon drop from various frost giants across Velious. It is droppable, so you may find it on vendors in Thurgadin.

The NO DROP Siren Hair drops from sirens in Cobalt Scar and Siren's Grotto. This should not be confused with Lock of Siren Hair, which is used for a different quest.

The Manticore Manes are a common drop from A Manticore in Eastern Wastes. These are also droppable and may be found on Thurgadin vendors.

The NO DROP Drakkel Wolf Whiskers drop from A Drakkel Dire Wolf in the Great Divide. They're often left to rot by players killing for faction, so a quick zonewide /shout may net you one or more rather quickly.

Once you have all the components, combine 1 Woven Frost Giant Beard, 2 Siren Hairs, 2 Manticore Manes, and 2 Drakkel Wolf Whiskers in a sewing kit to craft a Spool of Sacred Coldain Thread (trivial 148). Combine the thread with the Embroidered Shawl Pattern and Silk Coldain Prayer Shawl in a sewing kit to craft an Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl (trivial 208). If you fail the final combine, you get the shawl back. If necessary, follow the initial dialogue to get another pattern.

Give Betti the Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl.

Betti Frostweaver says 'Spectacular artistry! I doubt I could have done better myself. You'll have to forgive me, I know time is short and I tend to carry on. This is the pattern for the making of a rune sacred to our people. It will be our final test of your craftsmanship and will put many of your skills to the test, but I trust you'll find the finished product to be more than worth the effort. Show Gilthan the silk shawl, he will set you on the path. May Brell always be with you outlander.'

how to take down chanters
# Apr 24 2002 at 4:42 AM Rating: Decent
ok all here is a way to take down chanters as i am a chanter... first and foremost have MR up as high as you can... all of the chanters spells are Magic based, so if you have high MR then it is a breeze when they cast on you. if you dont have high MR you might as well forget it cuz you will get owned... FR... has nothing to do with our spells... our DS is firebased, but like all DS's is unresistable. now notes on this shawl quest.... drakkel dire wolf whiskers are a pain the ars to get... i just got one from like 2 hours of killing, i hear that EW wolves drop them more common, is that true??? anyhow about to make a attempt for the shawl after i get my sirens hairs

My 6th shawl experience
# Apr 18 2002 at 3:42 PM Rating: Good
Hello all and if you are reading this hopefully its gratz on your 5th shawl. Its starting to get pretty nice now.
First
Dont give Betti your shawl. Ya dont need to, and if you do its bye bye shawl. You only have to ask her "What Embroidered prayer shawl" and she will give you a pattern. Since you can do this at any time I would just wait till the end so that you dont take up a backpack or a bank slot. The only good reason to have the pattern is so that you dont have to run back to Thurg to make the last attempts.

The Pieces
Manticore manes, these are fairily common drops in EW. If you can get a tracker for this part it will help tremendously. The manticores are not that uncommon and the most common spot is along the South West Wall, near the kael entrance and the walrus spawns. They are plentiful and they drop manes often. Be aware that the manticores are pretty nasty, with some being light blue to a 60 druid. Easy to kite, and not especially resistant to anything.
Woven Frost Giant beard - Not too hard to get as well. Many 35-40 people lvl in Greater Divide and an /ooc offering to buy one for 20 plat, about twice what you get for em from a vendor, will get you one quick. They are lore so sometimes groups let them rot. If you are hunting here any Giant can drop them, I got one from a scout, a beserker and an elite. I would hunt the scouts for ease, unless you are going for some exp. The Elites are blue to me at 60 still. The most common place to find groups, on my server at least, is the tree near EW zone, or behind the Giant fort south from the Wizzy spires.
Drakkel Dire Wolf Whiskers - A pain in the **** to get. They seem like an uncommon drop in GD. They are no drop so you have to be the one to loot. I have had some success /oocing for them at 20pp per loot but a few times the whiskers rotted before I could get there. The wolves were green at the mid 40s as I recall and are a breeze to kill if you are higher than that. Its just repetitive and boring. The wizzy spires are a good place to hang out as the high lvl people kill everything around them while waiting for a portal up to luclin, and often either dont loot or will allow you to loot their wolves.
Siren Hairs - a pain in my wolfy, or hobbit, bootie.
VERY IMPORTANT - as a courtesy to others make sure you ooc that you will be attacking sirens and which camp you are pulling from. Charmed PCs can and will attack anyone around that the sirens would normally aggro on. Make sure you dont drag any pulls through others. Its not fun to be medding and have a charmed SK come up and destroy ya.
The sirens are in a few places in CS. At the end of the land at the base of the cliff, near SS tower, in the water near the Sirens Grotto zone, and there are two camps of 3 each in the water along the west zone edge. My choice here was teh land sirens near the tower. I only ever soloed em so I have no advice about group tactics. After /oocing I would root one and dot it up, trying to stay out of spell range. This is hard, they have alot of range. You will get stunned now and again, dont worry too much about this if you have them snared and rooted. I first soloed an enchanter at 56, but it was touch and go, very tough. At 60 they are very easy. Many say pull the sirens to the water and kill them there. Im not sure I would recommend this. My few attempts at this were dismal failures, resulting in death twice and gating with very little life once. The ocean breaks visibility when casting from above the water and if you are under water it takes a while to stop moving. Also mobs swim way faster than you do, almost always.
There are three kinds of sirens. Enticers, seductresses, and Enchantresses. Enchantresses are still light blue at 60. All three cast Charm, a nasty chain stun a pretty nasty DD. Make sure you have MR and FR up, not sure on the FR but I think the nuke is fire based. The chain stuns are nasty if they are not resisted. The Charm is not too bad unless you are grouped, then it can be a nasty shock. I had pretty good luck the first time I camped these, I got 3 hairs in 6 kills. The second and third time was less frequent. I think I had to kill maybe 4-5 per hair.

Combines
I made all combines in a Coldain Tailoring Kit. you should have this if you are on 6 =)
Tailoring 131 Succeed on thread failed on shawl
Tailoring 138 failed on thread
Tailoring 156 Success!!

Grats to anyone that makes it through this shawl, only one more to go, for now. If anyone on Morell Thule has questions feel free to drop me a line

PS I had base wis of 255 and a dex of 130 for the first attempt. I got fully buffed for the second with 255 wis 180ish int, 230 dex and failed on the first try. The third I happened to have c3, dont recall what my wis and int were, but just said what the heck and attempted it.

Don't Do What I Did!!
# Feb 09 2002 at 10:46 PM Rating: Decent
OK this is a warning. Don't do what I just did.

I had just finished my 5th shawl, lots of work as you all know. Beginning 6th, hailed Betti Frostweaver. She said something about a sewing pattern, I said what sewing pattern, and she ask to let her have another look at the Embroidered shawl. Stupid me, I handed my fifth to her. She thanked my politely. Go back to Start. Shawl #1.

I /petitioned this, talked to GM at some length. He acknowledges that I had the fifth shawl, and promised to go back to the EQ development team to make this part of the quest less misleading. But he would NOT return my fifth shawl. So I have to do the WHOLE BLEEPING FIVE SHAWLS OVER AGAIN.

Sigh.
SKILL LVL
# Feb 08 2002 at 3:10 AM Rating: Decent
I just did it with skill 155, it was not trival. My int was 250, wis 137, and dex was 205. Trust me, I hate tailoring now.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 30 2002 at 7:31 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) you guys are nuts, trying to bring it up to 130+ to get the shawl... he even says that you must become a master in the trade before attemping... so all you have to be is a master... i did mine at 102 put it all together and when i hit combine i gained a level (103) and got the 5th shawl... but ok, get to 130 or 140 in tailoring if you want, by then i should be living it up with the 7th :P
RE: Master at tailoring... that's it!!
# Apr 28 2002 at 8:05 PM Rating: Default
I also was successful at a skill lvl of 100... Not worth spending days more skilling spiders in CC. Even multiple attempts at this shawl would save time vs. leveling tailoring skill.
RE: Master at tailoring... that's it!!
# Apr 05 2002 at 6:48 AM Rating: Decent
I can kinda agree with both sides of this. I just failed on the 6th shawl with a 150 skill (made the thread but failed with the shawl combine). The thing is you always have a chance of a succesful creation in any tradeskill. It's just the matter of what that percentage is. So its all a matter of luck. Now comes the choice though. I would say at a skill level of 102 you probably have a 5% chance of sucess at the combine. With a skill of 190 you probably have a 5% failure rate. So the choice is simlpy, do the quest 20 times or take the 3 weeks of work trying to get your skill up to make it more likely. Personally I am DONE with tailoring. If I never see a silk swatch, it will be too soon. At level 53 I got all the components in roughly 4 hours. I don't mind doing the sirens again (I still get a little exp off them) if it means I don't have to spend hours upon hours hunting spiders for silk, or rockhoppers for the rare hides.

So I can see both sides, I think it would be a bit level dependent too. If I was a lower level it would make it more attractive to not have to do the sirens more than once. But as a 53 necro I don't have any problems even with the higher level enchantress' or seductress'.

Nuts?......NUTS, I SAY!!! Just because he says master, don't make the mistake of underestimating this quest. I failed on the sixth shawl three times, once at skill lvl 138, 150, and 158. I tried again at 158 and succeeded, so I didn't have to kill myself like I had promised. ;) You just happen to be the luckiest fool in all of Norrath to succeed at skill of 103. Grats, dawg!!
WOOT!
# Jan 22 2002 at 4:03 PM Rating: Default
Wow, i just got so lucky. I made the 6th shawl just now with only 126 tailoring skill. I am just way too lazy to get it higher but i know i am gonna have to to make the 7th. Well just thought i would like to share my luck, so it is possible at a low skill =)

Xinten
58 necromancer of Innoruuk

P.S. stats were as follows
(unbuffed btw)
Int-227
Wis-106
Dex-115
And as i said before only 126 tailoring skill

GL to all those making it in the future
6th Shawl
# Jan 10 2002 at 5:16 PM Rating: Default
My 2 cents worth. Just finished the 6th shawl today, after 2 failers earlier. The first time, I managed to make the thread, and failed on the shawl...tailoring at around 130. The second time, failed on the thread...tailoring around 138. This time, tailoring at 144, I got a dex buff BEFORE I tried either one, and had success with the thread, and then the shawl! The siren hairs were the worst part! But I'm a 52 Wizard and I could solo the enticers and seductress. Didn't try the enchantress because I don't think I could solo them. Manticore manes, drakkel wolf wiskers and frost giant beards were simple.
Anyway, for what it's worth, I would get a DEX buff before you try to make this shawl. Of course, getting your tailoring skill up doesn't hurt either. )
ahh the factors needed

I try to post this whenever I can to verify the necessary attribute for tradeskills and it is as follows:

You primary Wis or Int should be highest possible for skill ups AND success rate.

I am a master of every trade skill and have tried EVERYTHING to improve success rate and who wouldn't.

Some things to be aware of NOTHING has been proven to show dex has anything to do skilling. Ive had under 100 and over 200 with no difference whatsoever so do not waste your time and Your shammy and chanters time.
There is one attribute that does have some impact I have found and that is STR and that is solely for the Blacksmithing trade. I'm not saying its an end all be all, but I have found that it does help.
Verant did change the levelling aspect of tradeskills but I still have proven that INT casters DO level faster and WIS casters fail less at non trivial items.
The playing field is much better then it once was but if you want to get someone up the fastest possible through 200 int on a newbie character and have him/her level the skill. I being a druid have had a harder road, but I get what I can, when I can.
When you get to the 6th shawl and you have to master everything you will bein to understand this in your seemingly 1000s of attempts.
Some tips to go buy. Fletching, pottery are incredibly easy to do and all ingrediants readily available, Jewelery (IMO shouldnt be part of the cause it really only benefits one class-enchanter) and Tailoring the 2 hardest. J/C cause it is incredible expensive once you get into gold and ridiculous when in platinum. Tailoring takes by far the longest. Tailoring will bring you to the edge of insanity, but stick with all will be well.
Good luck fellow tradeskillers I wish you the best.
Actually...
# Mar 21 2002 at 11:35 AM Rating: Decent
I agree that DEX does not help gain the skill(s) faster, BUT it does improve your chances of a SUCCESSFUL combine. SO when making the shawls and they are not trival, then you want your DEX as high as you can get :)
Tailoring and Dexterity
# Dec 12 2001 at 6:11 AM Rating: Default
Hi folks.. i hear people talking about Dexterity being a tribute to the amount of successes in Tailoring but personally i believe it to be a phalacy... Personally (and i have done trade skills of many kinds) i have come to believe that Dex is not a factor what so ever,.. infact the only prevelent Stats are Wis or Int,.. and i stress "OR". ;D ,.. i think that the stat for learning trade skills is the same as your main mana based stat,. ie,. its Int for Int casters,. and Wis for Wis casters,. i figure this because i have a necro with about the same Int as my cleric has Wis,.and they both learn skills at the same rate.. My warrior on the other hand is not that bright (/wink) but has nice Dex,. and it still takes him ages to learn skills and his fail rate is exactlly the same as anyone else ;P
RE: Tailoring and Dexterity
# Jan 16 2002 at 9:08 AM Rating: Decent
The word is fallacy, phalacy would have something to do with phalis, which is a part of the male anatomy... to my point.. the general consensus among master tailors is that Dex and Int/Wis helps with skill increases, while only your skill affects chance of success.

Just Luck
# Dec 06 2001 at 6:58 AM Rating: Decent
It's just luck on the final combine. I failed my first 2 try with Int and Dex buff, won't help at all since i'm a SK. Then I went to collect enough items for 5 tries. I was dead bored waiting for something, so I just hit the combine with no Int or Dex buff at all and I made it with 136 tailoring and got a Point to 137. Had to give away 8 manes and destroy 8 whisker and hair, rofl. As for the 8ths shawl, I made it with 146 skill no buff and get a point as well, I guess I was just too lucky.

failure
# Dec 02 2001 at 2:50 AM Rating: Default
I finally did this tonight on my 8th attempt.

I have 151 skill in tailoring and I had 255int and 143 dex on the final combine.

failing
# Nov 27 2001 at 1:07 AM Rating: Default
Ok I failed this twice tonight both times at 151 tailoring skill I made the first thing both times it was trivial. First time I tried to make the actual shawl I had 240int and 93 dex. Second time I got a shaman to give me a focus and had 240int and 153 dex.

I am not sure if they increased the drop rates on the siren's hair but I was able to get 5 pretty fast and therefore was able to make the second attempt tonight as well.

Good luck and hopefully I was just extremely unlucky tonight :)

Hairs to use
# Nov 22 2001 at 10:31 PM Rating: Default
Firstly, the "loch of sirens hair" is not what you use for this. You need the non-stackable, nodrop/lore "sirens hair"

Yes, you can get these from seductresses in Cobalt Scar just as well as in Sirens' Grotto. There just aren't as many of them about.(which is a good thing if you're doing this solo)
RE: Hairs to use
# Dec 21 2001 at 1:49 AM Rating: Default
You mention that they are lore...pretty unlikely since you have to have two of them to combine in your kit.
Manticores
# Nov 18 2001 at 1:38 PM Rating: Decent
I am only on the third shawl right now... still looking for snow griffins. But, while I was between the fort and the bridge, I counted EIGHT manticores on track as a druid... Just to give you an idea of areas to track from :-) Oh and also they are about 70% red 30% blue to a level 39.

The thread is trivial between 151 and 153. The shawl itself is trivial higher than 191...yes, above 191.

For more details, see the EQ Traders Shawl Guide at http://www.eqtraders.com/quests/intro.htm

It is updated on a regular basis. Additional information is welcome, especially info that narrows down trivials for this shawl or the others. Just follow the link at the bottom of any of the shawl guide pages to post in the forums. :)
Shawl Sucess

I made a sucessful combine on the 6th shawl today
11/6/01
My tailoring skill was 158
My wis was 213
My dex was buffed to 243(shammy buff and boon)
The thread was trivial at 158, but the final combine was NOT. In hind sight it was kind of scary.
