We have a report as of September 12, 2013, that this quest may be broken due to a dialogue loop, making it impossible to progress.
This is the quest method of obtaining Ghoulbane. It is also a drop, which is described in the Ghoulbane quest. Ryshon Hunsti is located in West Karana, on the shore in the southeast corner. Hail Ryshon Hunsti Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Hello _____. What brings you to the Karanas? Do you seek [enlightenment]? You say, 'I seek enlightenment' Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Ahh, i could see by the look in your eyes that you are looking for something more than just enlightenment. Perhaps you are looking for a [sword] crafted by a noble man. You say, 'What sword?' Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is not just a sword friend. It is much more than that. This sword carries with it special [power], something unlike anything else within this realm.' You say, 'What power?' Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is an instrument fashioned together by noble man. It is said to be blessed by the gods themselves. Only a man who comes from nobility may wield it. Do you seek the [sword of nobility]?' You say, 'I seek the sword of nobility' Ryshon Hunsti says, 'I see, then take this note to Kanthuk Ogrebane. I've been told he can be found fishing not far from the dwarven city.' He gives you Note to Kanthuk. Travel to Butcherblock Mountains to the boat docks. Once zoned in to Butcherblock; follow the path to the city and follow the path to the dock but on the north side. The same side you will find Walnan and Grindbar. Looking at your map; he is in between them. If you follow the wall down to the water and then follow the water line you should run into him. There is a big boat and he is standing right on the shore/water line at /loc +2202, +2996 You say, 'Hail, Kanthuk Ogrebane' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Hello' Hand Kanthuk the note and get some experience. Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ahh, I see you have spoke to Ryshon. You seem tired from your long journey. Sit with me as I tell you a tale. A tale about a true friend of mine, a great man known as [Amstaf Trunolis].' You say, ' Who is Amstaf Trunolis?' Kanthuk ogrebane says, 'Amstaf Trunolis was a good man. I've followed into [battle] many times. We've seen many of our friends die by the sword of others.' You say, 'What battle?' Kanthuk Ogrebane laughes, 'I remember the first time we charged into battle. I was so scared. My hands wouldn't stop trembling. Amstaf pulled me off to the side before the initial attack began. He held my hands within his. I saw his hands begin to glow and felt his energy pass into me. I felt [courage]. You say, 'What courage?' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I'll never forget what he did for me that day. He gave me the courage to continue. No one's ever done anything like that for me. I vowed that day that I'd follow him into any battle. I'd be there alongside him, no matter what. As time went on we came across an elven woman named [Ambreen]. You say, 'Who is Ambreen?' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ambreen was younger than he and I. She knew of the powers of nature. She was able to control the rain which fell from the heavens and would call upon the spirits to aide her. It was obvious that Amstaf took a liking to Ambreen. She ended up coming with is on out crusades. The last I saw of Ambreen was when we went to the snow covered lands of Everfrost. We were wander the lands when a freak [snowstorm] hit us. We were seperated from one another for quite some time.' You say, 'What snowstorm?' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I don't know where it came from, but it was so sudden that it caught us all off guard. The snow quickly became unbearable. I tried to move to higher ground, but was unable to. I was stuck within the snowy confines. I didn't know what to do [next].' You say, 'What happened next?' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'As I laid there my body began to slowly freeze. I knew death was near and accepted the inevitable. Suddenly I felt something clutching at my cloak. I was being dragged upwards out of the snow. A hand pressed against my chest and began to glow. I felt energy pass into my body. Do you know [how] he had saved me?' You say, 'How did he save you?' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'He saved my life by laying his hands upon my body. A few moments later we found Ambreen lying in the snow, her body frozen by the harsh surroundings. We lifted her up off the ground and began to look for [shelter].' You say, 'What shelter?' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'We ended up taking refuge within a deserted cabin not to far from our location. We knew that we didn't have much time left to bring life back into her body. However, the storm didn't pass through and we knew we couldn't venture to far without the fear of freezing. I warmed the cabin and rested for some time thinking about what we were going to do. It wasn't long before my exhaustion took over. I fell into a deep [slumber] that night.' You say, 'What slumber?' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'That night I dreamt of many things. Random thoughts kept swirling around my mind. I kept seeing the image of a cloaked being and of Amstaf circled around a fire. I saw Ambreen's body convulsing above the fire as if life was being brought back to it. I don't know what happened that night. I don't even know if what i dreamt was real, but before I awoke I saw a [strange image].' You say, 'What strange image?' Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I saw Amstaf lower his head and walked away in silence. He was surronded by two beings carrying a torch. I don't know what it meant, but I swear it was so real. When I awoke both Amstaf and Ambreen were gone. Please find Llara and give this pendant to her. This pendant belonged to Amstaf. She too had a vision that night that may clear things up. If she asks where you got it from, mention my name.' You receive a Pendant. Next you need to find Llara. She is standing on a rock in Dagnor's Cauldron, just outside of the Estate of Unrest. Llara says 'Oh my! This belongs to Amstaf. Where did you get it? You say, 'Kanthuk gave it to me' Llara says 'I take it you're here to find out more about [Amstaf].' You say, 'Who was Amstaf?' Llara says 'I've known Amstaf since he was a child. We grew up in the same city together. Ever since I've known him there's always been something [unusual] about him.' You say, 'What was unusual?' Llara says 'When we were growing up we used to venture outside the city gates. Some times we would encounter a wandering ghoul or an undead spirit of some sort. He was always able to quickly dismiss the undead being with very little effort. I [learned] many things growing up with Amstaf.' You say, 'What did you learn?' Llara says 'Amstaf told me many things when we were younger. Once Amstaf told me that life isn't about how you get there, it's about where you end up. I miss my dear friend. Its been a long time since I've seen him. The night of the snowstorm I dreamt about him. I remember seeing Amstaf's face. I saw something I've never [seen] before.' You say, 'What did you see?' Llara says 'I saw desperation. I spoke to many people who knew Amstaf trying to find out if anyone heard anything about that night. No one knew anything about it. When I had reached the dwarven hunting grounds I ran into a woman named Walnan. She kept rambling on and on about the power of the Orb and something about Magi`kot. I didn't understand what she was saying. She didn't know anything about my situation either, but she did tell me that there were others that may be able to help me. She told me that I should find [Ruathey].' You say, 'Who is Ruathey?' Llara says 'Ruathey is known for her ability to look into people's souls and find truth. Though I wasn't able to find Amstaf, I was able to recover his sword. I believe that by having his sword I am closer to finding him. Take this note to Ruathey and tell her that I sent you. You can find Ruathey in Lavastorm Mountains, near the Nektulos Forest zoneline. You say, 'Hail Ruathey' Ruathey says 'Hello Chork .' Ruathey says 'I see that you've spoken to Llara. She too came to me looking for Amstaf. Though she wasn't able to find her friend, she was able to recover his [sword]. You say, 'What sword?' Ruathey says 'I've heard stories about a holy sword. There are many rumored to be hidden all throughout the world, yet only a few have actually been found. Amstaf had one of these swords. It is known for its ability to dismiss the undead. Perhaps by having this sword it'll bring you closer to finding your friend. Gather a ghoul's heart, Amstaf's Scroll, the Blade of Nobility, a noblemans hilt and place them in this [bag].' You say, 'What bag?' Ruathey says 'Take this bag and gather the items I've mentioned. I've been told that the Ghoul's Heart can be found in the estate of the undead, while the scroll can be found in the Keep not far from the Karanas. One of the others are rumored to be found near the dwarven city among the goblins. While the last should be found in the caverns of Najena. For those of you who haven't figured it out, you will need to go to Butcherblock, HighKeep, Unrest, and Najena. Your target is Crazed Ghouls in Unrest, Crazed Goblins in HighKeep and skeletons in Najena (named "a skeleton"). All the mobs that need to be killed are 25 to up to 35, and the items appear to be uncommon drops. You combine these 4 items in the bag Ruathey gave you and You have fashioned the items together to create something new! I just gave my note to Kanthunk. He is a dwarf looking fellow now. I went to Llara and she wasn't there. Someone said they killed her. Does anyone know how long it takes for her to respwan and what is the locatoin of her?

I'm not sure how long it takes for her to spawn but I was told it takes about 1 real life day for Ryshon Hunsti to spawn. Also when I did the quest she dissappeared after she handed the note to me. I'm not sure how long it takes for her to spawn back.

Don't know how often she spawns. But, I found her standing in the rocks just above the entrance to Unrest (there's a ledge up there). Hard to see her because of the terrain, just climb around the rocks close to Unrest till you find her. Good Luck.

Just got my Ghoulbane! Kanthuk, Llara and Ruathey were all where they were supposed to be and worked fine (make sure you keep them targeted as you talk to them). They all did dissapeared after I talked to them. Good luck.

Well, ghoulbane is definately fixed, the Sword of Nobility rocks while stacked with Nife and a good shield. Happy Questing felow Pallys

well..i went to the shores in butcherblock, waiting for kanthuk to spawn. think i waited about two hours.. nothing. :/
anyways.. i think i have found a bug. when summoning hammers to practise my skill, and put them on the ground, i suddenly got the message (in the log window) "Kancompan is too far away to trade with..".
say what!? i thought someone was invis, trying to steal my camp (i have heard that kanthuk despawns whenever someone hails him and gets the pendant). so i clicked my way forth with the hammer. then i got the trade window up, and i could GIVE items to this "kancompan guy", not TRADE as if "he" was a pc. cons green to a level 20 char. i dont know anything about loot and faction..didnt want to risk it. :)

I got this too waiting for Ruathey. I guess all pallies practice summoning hammers whilst waiting. Mine was called Ruacompan i think. After about 10 mins ruathay spawned so i dont think its a bug. Maybe it a place holder spawn or trigger or something. The name sounds like something i would give to a place holder spawn whilst the real spawn was de-popped.

as i said, though a bit dull, this guy is INVISIBLE. you cant target him. but you can trade with him (and target him)! really weird!

I was wondering if anyone knew the location to this guy. I found him in WK before the quest was fixed. I wasnt aware the quest was broken, like a DA, and gave the letter to Kanthuk Ogrebane. Well I went back to find him today and I cant find him. If someone could let me know the location/zone I would greatly apperiate this.

He is down by the waters edge near the ruins closer to the NK zone then QH always in the same spot. I thought I would be a nice wife and surprise my hubby by doing this for him while he was at work I have a druid so played both char. But we had the note already, well when I went to do the Kanthuk part I hit "A",,, crap :o) is all I can say. So I had to Tp us back to NK and luckily Ryshon was there so back to BB we went. another 2 hours and then Kanthuk again,, yeah! Well to my horror I did it again, the keyboard is a little messed up from the kids I can say that I am not a complete stupid blond LOL anyway back we went again to Ryshon and guess what ! He was there still ! so I truly dont know if I was just lucky or if his spawn rate is messed up but I do know he was in the same spot each time the loc is about neg 4239 neg 15170 or so I hope this helps at all, and I am sure will make some laugh too.

I gave the real Kanthuk his note and got to the [strange image] part of his story when he became unresponsive. went to another computer to check the quest verbiage and when I got back, he was gone! Doubt my petition will result in anything. Looking like another 3+ hour camp for the note again.

I had the EXACT same problem. Maybe it was not targetting him, but I doubt it since I never moved and I was sitting down.
I petitioned on my main as I was so pissed I switched characters. Thats a lot of running around and I have had my pieces since December.

When you get the the [strange image] part for some reason, you stop targeting him. Just re-target him and continue. BTW after he handed me the necklace and told me to go se llara, he disappered. Its off to unrest now )

I got past Kanthuk this morning, be sure you are sitting like he asks and since that is the last question, look and make sure you have him targeted. I too had problems with STRANGE IMAGE, I sat down, cliked on Kanthuk, wrote What strange image? and he gave me the note,Ive been to DC and now on my way to Lava Mnts. Have fun........

ok, so after holding on to all 4 pieces in my bank for the last 3 months, and sending countless emails with no reply as to when it's going to be fixed. A week before the patch I find out that it's going NO DROP? WTF is up with that? They gonna ***** with my Kromriff Military leggings too? I've been waiting on that one to get fixed as well.

I have 2 components and need the hilt, scroll, and bag. but I'm not holding my breath. It's so typical that those in teh service of a higher source, are getting screwed by politics. Looted the Hilt in Najena last night. That's the last item I needed. Well, except for the bag to put them in. Now if they will just fix Kanthuk Ogrebane, I can finish the quest and get my sword. I hope they do it soon!

i think the new no drop-thing will be great! it gives a unique feeling to the weapon.

What do the Crazed Goblins near the Dwarven City drop other than beads and an occasional piece of ringmail?? I've killed probably 20 - 30 of these guys and haven't seen anything drop that can be used for the quest.

if u are talking about the 4 crazed goblins (near the x-roads in a valley) they should drop the blade of nobility. maybe 1 out of 5.
I've been trying to quest for Ghoulbane for my alt and almost have everything. Now this. Fat chance of me having to finish it now. If they'd increase the amount of undead for the level the sword procs I'd be more excited (and upset).

We have reviewed Ghoulbane and SoulFire and will be making some changes to these items with the next patch.
Ghoulbane will become No Drop and SoulFire will require the proper Race/Class to activate. We wanted to make you aware of these changes before we made them. These weapons are really intended to be holy weapons, and these changes should make them exclusive to Paladins. We will also be reviewing the quest to make certain that it is working after the patch.

They are going to make the Ghoulbane nodrop which means if you are borrowing a friend's GB you better give it back before the next patch. Please look at Elorienestriel's message for link info. Also means the end of non-pally's doing the quest just to sell to pally's. Good or Bad? I dont know and I dont care as I will finally be able to do this quest after the next patch....

ummmmm, the one's already in players inventories do not become no drop, only the new ones!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but of course ALL Ghoulbanes will be no drop. They are not going to have two versions and they have done similar patchs since creation of EQ.
Yes, ALL Ghoulbanes will be No Drop after the next patch, and good thing too! BUT, Shadow Knights can still quest the blade as ALL of the quest NPCs are indifferent to all races/classes. Anyone can quest the blade but it will be no drop.

We at last have news! The quest WILL be fixed. I also sent an email via the everquestlive.com site suggesting they give Ghoulbane a unique look. Anyway, here is some information that Absor posted today in the Developer's Forum.

As the header says, it's still down. I have a druid alt, so I just gate him over to check daily on !Kanthuk.
The real concern now is this: Having spent some time in LGuk and seen only the Magi/Lord camped, there is speculation that the quest was only a mechanism to relieve camping of the Shin Lord in UGuk. Now that that's not an issue, they broke the quest to 'balance' the economy and make people camp the Shin Lord for the drop.
Either way, Verant really needs to come clean on this quest and either officially break it (just delete all the NPCs and drops, how hard is that?) or give an ETA for fixing it. It's been at least three months and is just ridiculous now. Granted the price was down in the 300pp range on Drinal, but it's the principle of the thing.

For a long time I have not even wanted a ghoulsbane, but now that I have seen epic I want to be able to get it. Is this quest ever going to be fixed? I have spent hours going from here to there getting all the items. GRRRR...

I'll accept that our epic is really hard and not that great for the reward.
I'll ignore that fact that, for the price, Ro armor is crap.
I'll let slide the fact that many good 1 and 2 hand slasher are NOT pally useable.

Please be advised that the best place to complain about this quest is to EQ support. The more complaints, the quicker it will be fixed. They are very distracted with the new Shadows release. Complain to them, and complain often.

just bought my husband a ghoulbane on Ayonae ro for 600pp...Was more than I wanted to spend but I figured with the quest being broken and the price going up I better snag it..

Tried all night last night to get the first guy to pop in WK. No luck. Is anyone ever going to fix this? I also noticed that Ghoulbane is one handed now. That makes it even harder to wait.

Dunno if this will help or if it is just sheer coincendence but I waited and waited for Ryshon in WK all darn day with no luck (found him last night no problem but like a dummy gave the note to the broken quest guy) I got bored and went and killed a ghoul. As soon as the ghoul dropped Ryshon popped up on my track...
Course now I am stuck at the ! guy and every time I ask a gm or guide I get the same "well the ! means his mind is elsewhere" or "it appears he isn't feeling right and you won't be able to compltet what you are doing" I wish they would just say its broken, or removed, or whatever. But if it were removed I would think we wouldn't be able to even start it with Ryshon...
Course now I am stuck at the ! guy and every time I ask a gm or guide I get the same "well the ! means his mind is elsewhere" or "it appears he isn't feeling right and you won't be able to compltet what you are doing" I wish they would just say its broken, or removed, or whatever. But if it were removed I would think we wouldn't be able to even start it with Ryshon...

I was grouped with a fellow Pally this afternoon, and complained about the broken quest as usual, when he says he just had it work a few days ago. Says Kanthuk is still !, but it all worked and he got his 4th Gb now....I haven't actually gotten back on the road to see if this is true, but wanted to inform those who have been waiting for word of a fix...
