We have a report as of September 12, 2013, that this quest may be broken due to a dialogue loop, making it impossible to progress.

This is the quest method of obtaining Ghoulbane. It is also a drop, which is described in the Ghoulbane quest.

Ryshon Hunsti is located in West Karana, on the shore in the southeast corner.

Hail Ryshon Hunsti

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Hello _____. What brings you to the Karanas? Do you seek [enlightenment]?

You say, 'I seek enlightenment'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Ahh, i could see by the look in your eyes that you are looking for something more than just enlightenment. Perhaps you are looking for a [sword] crafted by a noble man.

You say, 'What sword?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is not just a sword friend. It is much more than that. This sword carries with it special [power], something unlike anything else within this realm.'

You say, 'What power?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is an instrument fashioned together by noble man. It is said to be blessed by the gods themselves. Only a man who comes from nobility may wield it. Do you seek the [sword of nobility]?'

You say, 'I seek the sword of nobility'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'I see, then take this note to Kanthuk Ogrebane. I've been told he can be found fishing not far from the dwarven city.'

He gives you Note to Kanthuk.

Travel to Butcherblock Mountains to the boat docks. Once zoned in to Butcherblock; follow the path to the city and follow the path to the dock but on the north side. The same side you will find Walnan and Grindbar. Looking at your map; he is in between them. If you follow the wall down to the water and then follow the water line you should run into him. There is a big boat and he is standing right on the shore/water line at /loc +2202, +2996

You say, 'Hail, Kanthuk Ogrebane'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Hello'

Hand Kanthuk the note and get some experience.

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ahh, I see you have spoke to Ryshon. You seem tired from your long journey. Sit with me as I tell you a tale. A tale about a true friend of mine, a great man known as [Amstaf Trunolis].'

You say, ' Who is Amstaf Trunolis?'

Kanthuk ogrebane says, 'Amstaf Trunolis was a good man. I've followed into [battle] many times. We've seen many of our friends die by the sword of others.'

You say, 'What battle?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane laughes, 'I remember the first time we charged into battle. I was so scared. My hands wouldn't stop trembling. Amstaf pulled me off to the side before the initial attack began. He held my hands within his. I saw his hands begin to glow and felt his energy pass into me. I felt [courage].

You say, 'What courage?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I'll never forget what he did for me that day. He gave me the courage to continue. No one's ever done anything like that for me. I vowed that day that I'd follow him into any battle. I'd be there alongside him, no matter what. As time went on we came across an elven woman named [Ambreen].

You say, 'Who is Ambreen?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ambreen was younger than he and I. She knew of the powers of nature. She was able to control the rain which fell from the heavens and would call upon the spirits to aide her. It was obvious that Amstaf took a liking to Ambreen. She ended up coming with is on out crusades. The last I saw of Ambreen was when we went to the snow covered lands of Everfrost. We were wander the lands when a freak [snowstorm] hit us. We were seperated from one another for quite some time.'

You say, 'What snowstorm?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I don't know where it came from, but it was so sudden that it caught us all off guard. The snow quickly became unbearable. I tried to move to higher ground, but was unable to. I was stuck within the snowy confines. I didn't know what to do [next].'

You say, 'What happened next?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'As I laid there my body began to slowly freeze. I knew death was near and accepted the inevitable. Suddenly I felt something clutching at my cloak. I was being dragged upwards out of the snow. A hand pressed against my chest and began to glow. I felt energy pass into my body. Do you know [how] he had saved me?'

You say, 'How did he save you?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'He saved my life by laying his hands upon my body. A few moments later we found Ambreen lying in the snow, her body frozen by the harsh surroundings. We lifted her up off the ground and began to look for [shelter].'

You say, 'What shelter?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'We ended up taking refuge within a deserted cabin not to far from our location. We knew that we didn't have much time left to bring life back into her body. However, the storm didn't pass through and we knew we couldn't venture to far without the fear of freezing. I warmed the cabin and rested for some time thinking about what we were going to do. It wasn't long before my exhaustion took over. I fell into a deep [slumber] that night.'

You say, 'What slumber?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'That night I dreamt of many things. Random thoughts kept swirling around my mind. I kept seeing the image of a cloaked being and of Amstaf circled around a fire. I saw Ambreen's body convulsing above the fire as if life was being brought back to it. I don't know what happened that night. I don't even know if what i dreamt was real, but before I awoke I saw a [strange image].'

You say, 'What strange image?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I saw Amstaf lower his head and walked away in silence. He was surronded by two beings carrying a torch. I don't know what it meant, but I swear it was so real. When I awoke both Amstaf and Ambreen were gone. Please find Llara and give this pendant to her. This pendant belonged to Amstaf. She too had a vision that night that may clear things up. If she asks where you got it from, mention my name.'

You receive a Pendant.

Next you need to find Llara. She is standing on a rock in Dagnor's Cauldron, just outside of the Estate of Unrest.

Llara says 'Oh my! This belongs to Amstaf. Where did you get it?

You say, 'Kanthuk gave it to me'

Llara says 'I take it you're here to find out more about [Amstaf].'

You say, 'Who was Amstaf?'

Llara says 'I've known Amstaf since he was a child. We grew up in the same city together. Ever since I've known him there's always been something [unusual] about him.'

You say, 'What was unusual?'

Llara says 'When we were growing up we used to venture outside the city gates. Some times we would encounter a wandering ghoul or an undead spirit of some sort. He was always able to quickly dismiss the undead being with very little effort. I [learned] many things growing up with Amstaf.'

You say, 'What did you learn?'

Llara says 'Amstaf told me many things when we were younger. Once Amstaf told me that life isn't about how you get there, it's about where you end up. I miss my dear friend. Its been a long time since I've seen him. The night of the snowstorm I dreamt about him. I remember seeing Amstaf's face. I saw something I've never [seen] before.'

You say, 'What did you see?'

Llara says 'I saw desperation. I spoke to many people who knew Amstaf trying to find out if anyone heard anything about that night. No one knew anything about it. When I had reached the dwarven hunting grounds I ran into a woman named Walnan. She kept rambling on and on about the power of the Orb and something about Magi`kot. I didn't understand what she was saying. She didn't know anything about my situation either, but she did tell me that there were others that may be able to help me. She told me that I should find [Ruathey].'

You say, 'Who is Ruathey?'

Llara says 'Ruathey is known for her ability to look into people's souls and find truth. Though I wasn't able to find Amstaf, I was able to recover his sword. I believe that by having his sword I am closer to finding him. Take this note to Ruathey and tell her that I sent you.

You can find Ruathey in Lavastorm Mountains, near the Nektulos Forest zoneline.

You say, 'Hail Ruathey'

Ruathey says 'Hello Chork .'

Ruathey says 'I see that you've spoken to Llara. She too came to me looking for Amstaf. Though she wasn't able to find her friend, she was able to recover his [sword].

You say, 'What sword?'

Ruathey says 'I've heard stories about a holy sword. There are many rumored to be hidden all throughout the world, yet only a few have actually been found. Amstaf had one of these swords. It is known for its ability to dismiss the undead. Perhaps by having this sword it'll bring you closer to finding your friend. Gather a ghoul's heart, Amstaf's Scroll, the Blade of Nobility, a noblemans hilt and place them in this [bag].'

You say, 'What bag?'

Ruathey says 'Take this bag and gather the items I've mentioned. I've been told that the Ghoul's Heart can be found in the estate of the undead, while the scroll can be found in the Keep not far from the Karanas. One of the others are rumored to be found near the dwarven city among the goblins. While the last should be found in the caverns of Najena.

For those of you who haven't figured it out, you will need to go to Butcherblock, HighKeep, Unrest, and Najena.

Your target is Crazed Ghouls in Unrest, Crazed Goblins in HighKeep and skeletons in Najena (named "a skeleton").

All the mobs that need to be killed are 25 to up to 35, and the items appear to be uncommon drops.

You combine these 4 items in the bag Ruathey gave you and You have fashioned the items together to create something new!

You are holding a Ghoulbane.

Getting Items
# Jul 09 2001 at 7:37 AM Rating: Default
Ok in unrest it is easy to get the heart
there are only 3 crazed ghouls (one pops as a ghoul) The heart pops fast usually like 30%

In BB the Crazed goblin/goblins are near
the dwarf city. The pop rate on them is less but there are 4 of them

In Highkeep the goblins in the basement pop the scroll. I have gotten it off the goblin thief both times i have done the quest not the crazed, but they may pop it too.

and in Najena it Is the skele under the stairs. There are 4 skelies in the zone but i poped the hilt ywice from the guy under the steps.

hope this helps.

I got the Ghoulbane. The hardest part was waiting on the scroll. I spent 5 hrs killing stuff (no small task for a 30 pally) in that basement. ugh. it's great to have though!

First off, Listen to Astin... Camped 4 hours at 2 skeletons near the invisible wall and nothing. Now go past the sign that says Najera and go right to the ledge... there should be 1 skel there and 1 skel a bit of the way past there. I'm fairly sure they both drop the Hilt. Also im on 19..... =) All you need to do is hang around high lvls and asks politly if you can take there loot. Excluding the Hilt. It is most likly you will have to pay someone to guide you and protect you while they kill the skels and get the drop. Lastly I think I should say that doing this quest simply to sell this item is quite stupid, i feel proud to be using it but it took like 3 days to get this all together because I had really bad luck with the drops. If you are lower level like I am than go ahead and do this quest but the quest is getting harder to do and taking longer while simultaniously the prices of the Sword are going down.
The Hilt

Thanks for the Tip Astin! I got the 'A skeleton' ( blue to me at 31) to drop the hilt after 4 spawns. It took about 2 hrs. 76, neg 56. Good luck to all!

i am a 24 th lv palli. the first few part's of the quest were no problem to solo except for the cost of buying tp's. once in a drop area there were usually many high lv palli's in the area who when asked nicely were more than happy to let me lot body's that i could not yet kill. this is the first fantastic quest i have done and i think it's great. my only complaint would be why the quest is open to other class'es. on many spot's in the quest i had to wait a while for druid's and mage's to get done before i could continue with my quest, but with the exception of that it was a great quest. tomarr stealshanks xev server
Skeleton
# Jul 06 2001 at 9:13 AM Rating: Decent
I camped "A Skeleton" that spawns in one of the front rooms (loc 126 284) for several hours with no drop. I decided to look farther in the zone and came across another located under the steps down in the cave area on the way to Najena (76 neg56). It dropped the hilt on the first spawn. Not sure if it was luck or location. Hope this helps.
Najena Skel
# Jul 05 2001 at 1:53 PM Rating: Decent
The Najena skell has been changed, trust me, i have done this twice before, once for me and once for a present to a friend. Now i was doing it for a wdding gift. The Skell does not spawn at the first room anymore, i waited for 2 hours, no spawn. Yesterday i went again, and did find the hilt. it now spawns inside Najena at loc pos 57, neg 80, well atleast i did get it there.

Ogrebane
# Jul 04 2001 at 2:09 PM Rating: Default
Ok, got the Ghoul Heart, the Amstaf Scroll and the note from Ryshon. Went to Ogrebane and got all the way to the last question and he wouldn't answer anything. Tried every way I can think of to word it, nothing. Any thoughts on what the correct wording is? Maybe the quest is broken? I am a half elf druid and Ogrebane was talking to me up until the last phrase before he is supposed to give the medallion or whatever. *shrugs* Am I am missing something fundamental here?

i had some truoble with this at first too. Then I figured out that I was an idiot. You are probally going to smack yourself in the head like I did when I found out what I was doing wrong. Here is the key......make sure you click on him and he is in your target window. If not he will not respond.

Oh my god! I just smacked my head SO hard! I was sitting here reading posts while trying to get this dorf to finish. I tried the target thing and it worked. hehe.. This is on;y my second time through the talk part of the quest. I had a high level druid kill the one in dragnor's after 20 minutes telling her the phrasses =)

Thanks for this seemingly simple answer Anony.

NERFED!!!!
# Jul 03 2001 at 3:36 PM Rating: Default
I did this quest 3 times before the patch and had 3 ghoulbanes within 2 days. Everwhere I went the drops were within minutes. I started the quest yet again the day after the patch and Verant has nerfed it pretty bad. The heart was no problem. The crazed ghouls in Unrest drop it just as regularly as they used to and have the same spawn time. Went to kill the gobs in BB after I got the heart and that sucked. Verant has dropped the spawn rate to 30 MINUTES!!! My group and I camped these suckers for 4 hours before they dropped the blade. After sucessfully getting the blade I headed for Najena. They have nerfed the spawn here to. There used to be "a skelenton" that spawned inside the first room just past the low level ones. Well as you have probably guessed he doesn't spawn there now. There is another spot 3 rooms back that one used to spawn. He has been replaced by a tentical terror. Moral of the story...5 hours in Najena with a Druid tracking the skels for me since I can't seem to find their regular spawn spots and STILL no hilt. I am afraid to see what is going to happen in HHK.
RE: NERFED!!!!
# Jul 05 2001 at 12:03 PM Rating: Default
First there are only 3 ghouls spawns in unrest not
5, so it's a little harder to get hart there. Second, in HHK it's a same as it was. I did quest before and after patch, and it's more time taking.
Llora moved from water rock to the upper ground near tunnel to Unrest from DC. And the last, prices went down to 500 and lower. Pretty soon there will be no reason to do this quest, if you are not a palladin.

I did the quest and got the sowrd no problems. Just have to be patient with the spawns. Guess I got lucky with the NPC's cuase I didn't have any trouble.

It has to have been nerfed. I did the quest a month ago, before patch for my pally and my brother's pally. No problem. crazed gobby in HHK dropped scroll within minutes. NOW, all day camp to get 1 scroll.

I go to Najena, where we got 2 hilts within 20 minutes, camped same skelly 9 hours straight. No hilt. 9 HOURS. and STILL camping. Drops everything but a hilt. last month, 2 hilts off this skelly within 20 minutes.

It SUCKS

"WAHT strange image"
# Jul 03 2001 at 12:25 AM Rating: Default
Alright, in the text of the quest, it says to ake kanthuk ogrebane "waht strange image?" Is this just a typo, or is this what you actually have to ask him? I've seen this on some other sites too. This could be the reason why so many people are having problems. Ogrebane ate my first note after i asked him "what strange image?" and "what was the strange image of?" like 50 times. If anyone could help, please let me know

Which Skeleton?

Can anyone confirm, what type of Skeleton I need to kill in Najena. I spent 3hrs camping a skeleton, not one drop.

I dont want to be camping the wrong thing as I need one or two of my guildies to help me and to take up their time on the wrong thing wouldnt be fair.

Please, anyone, this is the last item i need, it's driving me mad.

I have to agree, you guys are ******* about nothing. I need a ghoulbane for my epic (SK) and everytime I go through LS, there is either a druid or a wizard doing the GB quest. So I asked one of the druids why they needed a GB. He said "I have a paladin." Ok fine, I sit there and wait, wanting to see if he will be back in a few hours. About an hour or so later, I'm sitting there with some friends and guess who's back. I ask "Why are you back?" He says "I need a ghoulbane." I ask him why and he goes "I have a paladin." I say "Ok, what about the last ghoulbane you had." He says "I sold it." I shook my head and simply said "Because of farmers like you, they are going to nerf this and ***** everyone." Next day, patch day. And guess what... NPC's are missing and spawn rates are doubled. Thanks for ruining it you damn farmers.
Re: Is there more?
# Jun 30 2001 at 7:26 PM Rating: Default
At one time, the Fiery Avenger was the Paladin's epic quest item. In fact, it was the ONLY epic item to be obtained by anyone.

The Fiery Defender was added as the "new" epic due to all other classes having an epic to obtain.

Ryshun
# Jun 29 2001 at 6:08 PM Rating: Default
I also had Trouble today finding Ryshun. I have 2 accounts and 2 PC's so I ported my lvl 50 Pally to get the note from him (which I've done 6+ times), ran to where he normally spawns and Ryshun wasn't up. So After going up and down the coast a Few times and thinking what the heck, I brought my Druid there to Track him, scowered the place, still no Ryshun, so either he's bugged or they changed his spawn point. Not sure if I had bad luck today or what, but I also had a heck of a time getting some of the pieces to drop, like 5 times the wait I've normally had.

GL to you All, and please Post if he Re-appears on BristleBane

Spawn Rates...
# Jun 29 2001 at 10:11 AM Rating: Decent
Has anyone else noticed since the last patch that the Spawn rates on these quest guys was lowered. Not just a little but alot like doubled. Was about 6 min spawn before the other night it was closer to 12 min refresh. I suppose it was to keep peeps from farming the GB so easily. Cant blame them, I just wish I would have kept doing it before the patch. LOL Ohh well easy come easy go. Perhaps it was to keep peeps from hunting for exp, I know I was at the Crazed gobs hunting for exp. Saw several pala's with there new GB smacking down the Crazed Ghouls. Things that make you go Hmmmm.

Whats the level on the skele in Najena that drop the hilt?
RE: Level on the Skeles
# Jun 28 2001 at 11:41 AM Rating: Decent
Don't know exactly. All conned blue to me at 36 (when I started hunting them for xp) and now most of them (6 of 7 spawns) are green to me at 38.

For a Paladin with fairly average equipment they are easy to kill and hilt drops so often it makes getting one easy. Often times I am the only one in the zone and at 37 I was able to get 38 in about 3 hours of easy running between the spawns.
