This quest lets you get back your newbie robe/weapon in case you lost it so that you can do the quests that require it. Hail your Guild Master to start the quest. Each class starts a little different, but the phrases are pretty obvious.

Toilmaster Path. This part is the same for everyone.

Then you get a Ragged Book. Read it (it is quite interesting). Then go to East Cabilis and find The Toilmaster. Give him the book and...

The Toilmaster looks at the tome and speaks to you, scowling, 'Very well Broodling, I have a task for you. I should make you work at the feet of my Froglok Slaves, crushing granite, but the lore of the Brood has a specific rite for this situation. Take this book and learn the will of Cazic-Thule. Read it and ask me any questions that you may have before you start your penance. It would be a shame for you to fail at this task as well... though I wouldn't mind destroying you.'

You receive a book called Rites of Exoneration. Read the book, it tells you to ask him for the hammer and a bag.

    You say, 'Hail The Toilmaster'

The Toilmaster says 'Do not bother me unless you wish to join the chain gang. Now go away or I shall have my slaves chop you as they chop this granite!'

You say, 'I need the Hammer of Exoneration'

The Toilmaster hands you a massive hammer and says, 'So, you can read. Good for you. Don't think that you're going to make an impression on me with that rubbish. Let's see if you can handle this hammer like you can that book, whelp.'

The Toilmaster hands you the Hammer of Exoneration, 4/60, effect: Bone Shatter, wt. 25.0. You have to make this hammer proc 54 times.

You say, 'I need the bag'

The Toilmaster turns his head to focus on you and hands you a dusty bag. He then returns to looking into the distance, just over your left shoulder.

He hands you Penance Bag, an 8 slot bag, in which you will later combine 7 Powdered Bones and 1 Flask of Bloodwater.

For now, go back to West Cabilis. In the building near the necro guild on the wall, there's a mortician. He's a skelly, but he won't hurt you.

    You say, 'Hail a mortician'

a mortician stares at you with hollow eye sockets. As he opens his jaw to speak, you are overcome by the foul smell of a thousand rotted corpses. 'What is your desire, master?'

You say, 'I desire a mortar and pestle'

a mortician moves with a mixture of creaks and clicks and produces a grotesque looking mortar and pestle set. He places the items in your hands and motions indicating you dismissal. You can feel the vile power of your god moving throughout the material that makes up the two items.

The Grotesque Mortar and Pestle is what you combine the bone fragments in that you get. It's an 8 slot container. Here's the part where it gets BORING. I went to Lake of Ill Omen, there's lots of mobs there that you can fight for a long time without causing too much harm. If you get low on life, cast leach or something.

When you do get 8 Bone Fragments, you combine them in the mortar and pestle and you get a white Powdered Bone. Put that in the bag. You need 7 of them. When you have 7 Powdered Bones, put one Flask of Bloodwater in there and hit combine to get a Filled Penance Bag. Then turn that bag and the book you have into your guild master.

    Necromancer version:

    You say, 'Hail Nihilist Zeegarn'

Nihilist Zeegarn says 'Mind yourself within Cabilis. We will not tolerate any mischief. If you don't heed my warnings, you may be sentenced to the pit of the Crusaders of Greenmist. You don't want that! Also, you should always wear your robe when entering these walls. You do have your Drape of the Brood, correct?

You say, 'I do not have my drape of the brood'

Nihilist Zeegarn says 'What is this?' the Nihilist barks in disbelief. 'You have lost your drape? This is unacceptable! Take this note and report to the Toilmaster at once. Read it on the way and praise Cazic-Thule for any mercy that you may be granted!'

    Shaman version:

    You say, 'Hail, Hierophant Zand'

Hierophant Zand raises his hand and looks up. 'May the wisdom of the ancients lead your soul to suffering and everlasting pain. Such is the will of Cazic-Thule. I see something in your eyes, Grizzer. Have you lost something... your cudgel perhaps?'

    You say, 'yes'

Hierophant Zand says 'That is most unfortunate for you. Your suffering will be extended on this plane, until you find your way back to us. Take this and read it on your way to speak with the Toilmaster. He will guide you. Yesssss...' You feel as if something is peering at you from behind the speaker's soulless eyes as the last letter he speaks transforms into a sigh.'

He then hands you the book.

Nihilist Zeegarn takes the bag and tome from you and in return gives you the item that you have been thinking of all of this time. Lucky, you... you have earned a second chance. Praise Cazic-Thule! You get your Newbie Robe back.

    Monk version:

    You say, 'Hail, Master Niska'

Master Niska bows with elegance and grace. You can see her arms rippling with muscles. 'Greetings. We are the Swifttails. We are the harnessers of the elements. We are the tails of discipline. To achieve rebirth into our castle is a great honor indeed. We can be identified by our adornments. You should display that which we have given you to adorn your arms with pride. You do have your bracer, correct?

You say, 'I do not have my bracer'

Master Niska says, 'You dare disgrace us?' She hisses at you. 'If you have truly lost the marking of our caste, you will need to take this note and speak to the Toilmaster immediately. Read it on the way and praise the will of Cazic-Thule.'

Your faction standing with Swift tails has been adjusted by 100.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 25.

    Shadownight version:

    Human Shadowknight

    You say, 'Hail, Squire Gristle'

Squire Gristle says, 'Hail, Broodling! When you walk the halls of this tower, you should always display the status that you have earned within our ranks. It brings me pride to see the might of the brood displayed by one such as you while I reflect here in the tower. Do you have the tool of your caste with you at this time?'

You say, 'I do not have my kukri'

Squire Gristle shakes his head and growls. That is not good, broodling... Not good at all. You will need to take this note and seek out the Toilmaster immediately. Read it on the way and hope that your incompetence can be overcome. We do have a pit for you, should this prove to be impossible.

The Toilmaster looks at the tome and speaks to you, scowling, 'Very well, broodling, I have a task for you. I should make you work at the feet of my froglok slaves, crushing granite, but the lore of the brood has a specific rite for this situation. Take this book and learn the will of Cazic-Thule. Read it and ask me any questions you may have before you start your penance. It would be a shame for you to fail at this task as well... though I wouldn't mind destroying you.'

    You say, 'hammer of exoneration'

The Toilmaster hands you a massive hammer and says, 'So, you can read. Good for you. Don't think that you're going to make an impression on me with that rubbish. Let's see if you can handle this hammer like you can that book, whelp.'

You say, 'i need the bag'

The Toilmaster turns his head to focus on you and hands you a dusty bag. He then returns to looking into the distance, just over your left shoulder.

    You say, 'Hail, a mortician'

A mortician stares at you with hollow eye sockets. As he opens his jaw to speak, you are overcome by the foul smell of a thousand rotted corpses. 'What is your desire, master?'

You say, 'i desire a mortar and pestle'

A mortician moves with a mixture of creaks and clicks and produces a grotesque looking mortar and pestle set. He places the items in your hands and motions indicating you dismissal. You can feel the vile power of your god moving throughout the material that makes up the two items.

    Turn in completed:
Squire Gristle takes the bag and tome from you and in return gives you the item that you have been thinking of all of this time. Lucky, you... you have earned a second chance. Praise Cazic-Thule!
Your faction standing with Cabilis Residents has been adjusted by 100.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 25.
You receive 1 copper from Squire Gristle.
You receive 1 silver from Squire Gristle.

    Warrior version:

Crusader Zixo is the NPC warriors have to speak to get the Ragged Book for The Penance. He roams in the watery area in front of War Baron Eator between Smithy Krikt & Weaponsmith Grugl. Hail him and he says:

'Do you come to me empty handed, knave? Did you lose your pike?'

Just say 'Yes' to him and you get this message when he hands you the ragged book:

Crusader Zixo roars at you, heat pouring into his dead eyes. 'Do you know what this means, wretch? I will give you one chance to prevent your floating near my feet. Take this tome and go speak to the Toilmaster. MOVE, while you still have breath.'

Got mine from the Squire on the top floor of the left tower as you face the building. The rest with the Toilmaster and Mortician are the same. The Hammer is a bear with 60 delay but I get it to proc a couple of times when fighting blues.

Hey, isn't the *NOTE* only lore and not no drop? Which means instead of doing this long quest with a hammer that waight alot (too much IMO) you can just drop on on the groud and go back and get it?... There pleanty of places in EC to hide stuff, for example in the sewers like holes there, at the very end, is a place where you can get up too (it's kind of hard sometimes =P) and there is a invisable wall which you can walk into and drop the note and get you other char, or atleast I think the notes are no drop...
    Good luck

Thats what I posted before, well I got news, I was wrong, you have to do this quest if you want that weapon/armor piece thingy after you turn in the request note for your guild.
I've done it at it works.

The shackel is a "No Drop Lore Item". The only shackle quest you may duplicate is the, Shackle of Caly quest to get a shackle back on the other wrist.

After completing the Shackle of Stone quest, Master Raska will mentiuon that you need to see Master Niska.

If you pay attention (or have tried to work on your forging skill) you should have noticed that the majority of all the "flasks" of water to be purchased any where near Cabilis are actually "blood water". Just ID the items before you buy them and you will find yourself withas many of these as you want.

In ill omen near to the left of the zone out of cabilis theres a tower and inside is a General who usually stands on the balcony overlooking the lake. Anyway if you give him 4 sarnac brains he will give you a great faction hit(s)and some coin. He also gives you somesort of froglok legs to eat and bloodwater, but you may have to do the quest a few times to get the bloodwater. Hope that helps. =)

You can buy the bloodwater, if I'm not mistaken. Try at the merchants near this General in LOIO, or in one of the buildings outside Cabilis in Field of Bone.

Ok.. the toilmaster gives you a hammer that weighs 25.0 and you have to make it proc 54 times. I was at a merchant one time and it had a "17 pound fetid bass." This weighed 1.7. That means .1 stone = one pound. So you have to toss around a -250 pound- and make it proc -54 times-? My monk would be crying after 14 procs!

I did the entire quest, and I did it correctly too. Well, I took the bag with all the items (yadda, yadda, yadda), and I gave it to the person who gave me the note at the very beginning of the quest, I thought I was supposed too. Well anyway, he said he wouldn't accept bribes. I know this is my own fault, but I thought everyone would get a good chuckle out of it. Now, I have to go and hit things with my useless hammer, later all. :P

ShadowKnights need to talk to Squire Gristle on the second floor of the guild building (he is in the tower to your right when you come out of the red teleporters). Tell him "I do not have my khukri" and he will give you the note to take to the principal...er...toilmaster :) when youve filled the penance bag, give the book the toilmaster gave you, as well as the filled penance back, back to Squire Gristle and he will give you your pawn's khukri back
    Multiquesting is NOT disabled
    # May 29 2001 at 3:40 PM Rating: Good
This rumor comes up after every single patch and every single time someone is short on faction.

Fact: Multiquesting, as of 5/28/01 (today), is still in game.

Fact: It is not disabled, on ANY quest that requires multiple items.

Fact: Sometimes, it fails. This is due to one of the people having too low faction, the mob aggroing one of the questers on the handin, the mob respawning in the middle of the quest, or some combo of the above.

If you want your newbie item back, chain quest it. Go get all the requirements for the upgrade on the initial item, then log out and make a newbie of the right class and hand in the newbie robe/weapon/bracer. After you log back in and hand in the other stuff, unless somebody only hands in the requirements and not the newbie robe in the 30 seconds it takes you to do this, you will have your second item in the chain.

Either that, or wait for this thing to proc 56 times. Your call.
ummm... how many procs does it take?
    # May 29 2001 at 8:26 AM Rating: Default
Above it says "You have to make this thing proc 54 times."
But then it says you need to combine 8 Bone Fragments in the mortar to produce 1 Powdered Bone and that you must have 7 Powdered Bones with one bloodwater.
My math says: 8 bone fragments times 7 equils 56 procs.

Not that an extra 2 procs is a big deal after the first 54 times but maybe I'm just missing something here.

*chuckles* You have never played an Iksar have you. All of there newbie items are no drop, and they are all used in a stepped quest. Each class has a different item. Not always the same old robe. Kukris, maces, and pikes are some examples of items the classes get.

    Also good for human monks...
    # May 27 2001 at 8:44 PM Rating: Decent
... human monks can get the sash and headband from the two human monk guilds, but until this quest could not get the shackles. While none of the items are exactly uber (and unlike the sash/headband, you don't need the shackles for the monk epic) but I know a few monks who simply take pride in having all the guild items as a sort of "badge of mastery".

Granted, for a human monk to enter Cablis, they'll still need to do a bunch of faction work and then the tedious penance quest... but it least it's POSSIBLE now. Besides,if one has good faction in Cablis getting around Kunark is a bit easier thanks to the city's central location, so there's another benefit to it.

Human monks won't get much use out of doing the quest chain, since the shackles are not human wearable. Human monks can wear some bracers that iksar cannot, so don't really miss out too much by not having this quest chain available.
    No point for necros yet

Im a level 51 iksar necro and still have my newbie robe, and it really serves no purpose.
The necro quests are skull caps and the first one can be obtained by just saying the phrase to the right guy. Unless another quest is found for my newbie robe I guess i will leave the horrible purple thing sitting in the bank.

read the book.. says turn into the representative of your guild who sent you. the female iksar is the one who sent you to toilmaster, so she give you the newbie bracer back after you give her the bag and book.

on another note, i did this quest thinking it was the next step in the shackles after obtaining shackle of rock. i was rather upset after doing all of that and only getting my newbie bracer back. oh well, it was a unique quest :)

If you do your guild quests, in general they require that you turn in previous items, going all the way back to your newbie item. If you lose an item along the way for whatever reason, the whole quest chain becomes unavailable to you. Lots of people start off with a character, get the newbie item, someone else hands them a bunch of stuff, they say "gee, this item is garbage" and delete it. Some lose items by losing a corpse. Some make a mistake on the quest turn in, and lose the items.

There old way around that problem was for people to multiquest - someone would make another character that could turn in the newbie item for you, and you'd turn in the rest of the things needed for the quest and you'd be able to continue on. Multiquesting is considered an exploit by Verant, though, and they have disabled it on some quests. They may disable it on all quests at some point.

If the ability to multiquest is removed, then someone who loses a piece of their guild's quest chain is completely screwed out of being able to do those quests. They are addressing that problem by putting in quests to allow you to reclaim your newbie item so that you can do the quest chain.
    RE: Any followup quest?
    # May 27 2001 at 1:11 AM Rating: Excellent
Good analysis, Nitramous. I think that Verant is definitely going to be getting rid of multi-questing soon. When I heard they were considering it, the two questions I asked were, "What about the J-Boots quest?", and "What about the shackles quest?". It seems Verant's been asking the same questions. On Test, there's a set of boots called "Boots of the Traveller" or something like that for the same price as a Tink on the gnomes in Sol A. Now, there's a quest so that Iksar monks can get their first shackle back. Either this is a remarkable co-incidence, or multi-questing is about to go.

You may want to decide that you want to do your class specific quests...not for any particular benefit, but for status.
    Whoever gives it
    # May 26 2001 at 4:34 AM Rating: Decent
Not nececsarily your guild master guys, it's whoever gives the quest out :) The necro guy that gives it out is one of the guys (it's actually a girl) that stands guards at the door.

And yes, you ahve to give her the book also. When I turned the bag in and nothing happend I was about to lose my mind, but then I remembered the book, and it worked :)

(I think I'd know, so listen to me =P)
    why?
    # May 25 2001 at 4:45 PM Rating: Excellent
Can't you just have a friend make a newbie character of your class and chain quest for the first upgrade? That's what I did when I lost my newbie spear as a lizard warrior.

They have removed the ability to multiquest some of the quests, and will probably at some point remove the ability to multiquest on all of the quests. When they do this, this will be the only way in which you can reclaim the newbie item.

Also, this is the correct roleplay way to get back the item in any case.
