This quest lets you get back your newbie robe/weapon in case you lost it so that you can do the quests that require it. Hail your Guild Master to start the quest. Each class starts a little different, but the phrases are pretty obvious.

Toilmaster Path. This part is the same for everyone.

Then you get a Ragged Book. Read it (it is quite interesting). Then go to East Cabilis and find The Toilmaster. Give him the book and...

The Toilmaster looks at the tome and speaks to you, scowling, 'Very well Broodling, I have a task for you. I should make you work at the feet of my Froglok Slaves, crushing granite, but the lore of the Brood has a specific rite for this situation. Take this book and learn the will of Cazic-Thule. Read it and ask me any questions that you may have before you start your penance. It would be a shame for you to fail at this task as well... though I wouldn't mind destroying you.'

You receive a book called Rites of Exoneration. Read the book, it tells you to ask him for the hammer and a bag.

    You say, 'Hail The Toilmaster'

The Toilmaster says 'Do not bother me unless you wish to join the chain gang. Now go away or I shall have my slaves chop you as they chop this granite!'

You say, 'I need the Hammer of Exoneration'

The Toilmaster hands you a massive hammer and says, 'So, you can read. Good for you. Don't think that you're going to make an impression on me with that rubbish. Let's see if you can handle this hammer like you can that book, whelp.'

The Toilmaster hands you the Hammer of Exoneration, 4/60, effect: Bone Shatter, wt. 25.0. You have to make this hammer proc 54 times.

You say, 'I need the bag'

The Toilmaster turns his head to focus on you and hands you a dusty bag. He then returns to looking into the distance, just over your left shoulder.

He hands you Penance Bag, an 8 slot bag, in which you will later combine 7 Powdered Bones and 1 Flask of Bloodwater.

For now, go back to West Cabilis. In the building near the necro guild on the wall, there's a mortician. He's a skelly, but he won't hurt you.

    You say, 'Hail a mortician'

a mortician stares at you with hollow eye sockets. As he opens his jaw to speak, you are overcome by the foul smell of a thousand rotted corpses. 'What is your desire, master?'

You say, 'I desire a mortar and pestle'

a mortician moves with a mixture of creaks and clicks and produces a grotesque looking mortar and pestle set. He places the items in your hands and motions indicating you dismissal. You can feel the vile power of your god moving throughout the material that makes up the two items.

The Grotesque Mortar and Pestle is what you combine the bone fragments in that you get. It's an 8 slot container. Here's the part where it gets BORING. I went to Lake of Ill Omen, there's lots of mobs there that you can fight for a long time without causing too much harm. If you get low on life, cast leach or something.

When you do get 8 Bone Fragments, you combine them in the mortar and pestle and you get a white Powdered Bone. Put that in the bag. You need 7 of them. When you have 7 Powdered Bones, put one Flask of Bloodwater in there and hit combine to get a Filled Penance Bag. Then turn that bag and the book you have into your guild master.

    Necromancer version:

    You say, 'Hail Nihilist Zeegarn'

Nihilist Zeegarn says 'Mind yourself within Cabilis. We will not tolerate any mischief. If you don't heed my warnings, you may be sentenced to the pit of the Crusaders of Greenmist. You don't want that! Also, you should always wear your robe when entering these walls. You do have your Drape of the Brood, correct?

You say, 'I do not have my drape of the brood'

Nihilist Zeegarn says 'What is this?' the Nihilist barks in disbelief. 'You have lost your drape? This is unacceptable! Take this note and report to the Toilmaster at once. Read it on the way and praise Cazic-Thule for any mercy that you may be granted!'

    Shaman version:

    You say, 'Hail, Hierophant Zand'

Hierophant Zand raises his hand and looks up. 'May the wisdom of the ancients lead your soul to suffering and everlasting pain. Such is the will of Cazic-Thule. I see something in your eyes, Grizzer. Have you lost something... your cudgel perhaps?'

    You say, 'yes'

Hierophant Zand says 'That is most unfortunate for you. Your suffering will be extended on this plane, until you find your way back to us. Take this and read it on your way to speak with the Toilmaster. He will guide you. Yesssss...' You feel as if something is peering at you from behind the speaker's soulless eyes as the last letter he speaks transforms into a sigh.'

He then hands you the book.

Nihilist Zeegarn takes the bag and tome from you and in return gives you the item that you have been thinking of all of this time. Lucky, you... you have earned a second chance. Praise Cazic-Thule! You get your Newbie Robe back.

    Monk version:

    You say, 'Hail, Master Niska'

Master Niska bows with elegance and grace. You can see her arms rippling with muscles. 'Greetings. We are the Swifttails. We are the harnessers of the elements. We are the tails of discipline. To achieve rebirth into our castle is a great honor indeed. We can be identified by our adornments. You should display that which we have given you to adorn your arms with pride. You do have your bracer, correct?

You say, 'I do not have my bracer'

Master Niska says, 'You dare disgrace us?' She hisses at you. 'If you have truly lost the marking of our caste, you will need to take this note and speak to the Toilmaster immediately. Read it on the way and praise the will of Cazic-Thule.'

Your faction standing with Swift tails has been adjusted by 100.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 25.

    Shadownight version:

    Human Shadowknight

    You say, 'Hail, Squire Gristle'

Squire Gristle says, 'Hail, Broodling! When you walk the halls of this tower, you should always display the status that you have earned within our ranks. It brings me pride to see the might of the brood displayed by one such as you while I reflect here in the tower. Do you have the tool of your caste with you at this time?'

You say, 'I do not have my kukri'

Squire Gristle shakes his head and growls. That is not good, broodling... Not good at all. You will need to take this note and seek out the Toilmaster immediately. Read it on the way and hope that your incompetence can be overcome. We do have a pit for you, should this prove to be impossible.

The Toilmaster looks at the tome and speaks to you, scowling, 'Very well, broodling, I have a task for you. I should make you work at the feet of my froglok slaves, crushing granite, but the lore of the brood has a specific rite for this situation. Take this book and learn the will of Cazic-Thule. Read it and ask me any questions you may have before you start your penance. It would be a shame for you to fail at this task as well... though I wouldn't mind destroying you.'

    You say, 'hammer of exoneration'

The Toilmaster hands you a massive hammer and says, 'So, you can read. Good for you. Don't think that you're going to make an impression on me with that rubbish. Let's see if you can handle this hammer like you can that book, whelp.'

You say, 'i need the bag'

The Toilmaster turns his head to focus on you and hands you a dusty bag. He then returns to looking into the distance, just over your left shoulder.

    You say, 'Hail, a mortician'

A mortician stares at you with hollow eye sockets. As he opens his jaw to speak, you are overcome by the foul smell of a thousand rotted corpses. 'What is your desire, master?'

You say, 'i desire a mortar and pestle'

A mortician moves with a mixture of creaks and clicks and produces a grotesque looking mortar and pestle set. He places the items in your hands and motions indicating you dismissal. You can feel the vile power of your god moving throughout the material that makes up the two items.

    Turn in completed:
Squire Gristle takes the bag and tome from you and in return gives you the item that you have been thinking of all of this time. Lucky, you... you have earned a second chance. Praise Cazic-Thule!
Your faction standing with Cabilis Residents has been adjusted by 100.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 25.
You receive 1 copper from Squire Gristle.
You receive 1 silver from Squire Gristle.

    Warrior version:

Crusader Zixo is the NPC warriors have to speak to get the Ragged Book for The Penance. He roams in the watery area in front of War Baron Eator between Smithy Krikt & Weaponsmith Grugl. Hail him and he says:

'Do you come to me empty handed, knave? Did you lose your pike?'

Just say 'Yes' to him and you get this message when he hands you the ragged book:

Crusader Zixo roars at you, heat pouring into his dead eyes. 'Do you know what this means, wretch? I will give you one chance to prevent your floating near my feet. Take this tome and go speak to the Toilmaster. MOVE, while you still have breath.'

    Penance/Greenmist
    # May 07 2003 at 3:30 PM Rating: Decent
I would very much like to speak with a Sk, of race other than lizard, that has recently done this quest. My faction is now amiable and I have th ebag of penance for the first turn in and the bag of heads for the second turn in. I am still unable to turn in the bag of penance. Unless you count turning it into the cleric guy for the useless cudgel....

How about an iksar that's not a sk at all lol. I have just helped a sk guildie get faction and the pawn khukri as of the exact date of this post. Turn bag and the book into squire gristle. Once you go through port curtains in shaman area, you on leadge he is in one of the side tower, lord qyzar is close to side tower the squire is in. This is the guy to turn bag and book, book from toilmaster, into for pawn's khukri. Then turn pawn's khukri, as you will always moreless turn in previous khukri with items for next khukri, and the heads into the guy for the next khekri. As indiff faction the sk can't turn's head in nor start that quest, but with dub to the squire he got pawn's khukri. Once you get pawn's khukri i recommend this site http://www.championsofcabilis.com then click quest. Will have every step for greenmist outside getting pawn's khukri. Good luck to all my sks in getting into cab and doing quest. SMALL NOTE: YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE FACTION WITH ALL CLASS GUILDS. YES NECRO GUILD TOO. If not someone will end up like my 52 bst. Trying his best to seriously barely keep the fd sk alive after that librarian in top with sk guild got a piece of him. Hehe I had forgot about him being there. So make sure your non kos to necro guild in west cab first.

    SK pennance/Greenmist

There have been many a changes it seems to this quest. I am 56th SK, trudging through the Greenmist quest. The MQ has been nerfed and the only way to get the starter blade is to do the penance quest. I spoke with many GM and explained several times, even posted to Sony board about The Hammer of Exonneration not being DE equipable. That trouble has been corrected. I am unable to find the person to turn in my bag of penance. I have combined and included the book, no one in the whole SK guild will take it, <sigh>. Reading the book does not say bring it back to the toilmaster as a previous post referenced. My faction is kindly in places ally in others. I have already started some of the turn-ins for the Greenmist quest, I do not think faction is the trouble.....

I'm not sure where your prob is but since i haven't seen a real answer given i'll break it down for you, (this is for Iskar SK only).

Hail Squire Gristle (he sells SK spells)

Say "I do not have my tool" (you'll get the Ragged Book)

Give the Ragged Book to the toilmaster (you'll get the Rites of Exoneration)

Follow the above tutorial on getting the bag full of powder and the flask of bloodwine (which can be purchased in a few places).

Be sure that once you have the bloodwine and the 7 bone powders that you close the bag. (there is a command called "combine" when you view the contents of the bag)

Give the bag to Squire Gristle and recieve the Pawn's Kurihki.

The MQ I can confirm DOES stil work, it just that you need amiable or higher. I just finished my Greenmist (for my RZ following Ogre) back in August of 03, so it works as of then.

Save your self some time and MQ the pawn's weapon, just ensure you have the faction.
    Starting Quest

Anyone have any help on getting this quest started as an Iksar Shammy?
    Human monks..

this quest is not well explained . So as a human monk...
    here it start :
    grand master Niska :
she's on the right when you enter the guild.. Just hail her and say "no" .

    The toilmaster :
hand him the book he'll return you it back.
    say :
"i need the hammer of exoneration"
    "i need the bag"
the toilmaster is between the bank and the brige you take to go to FoB, just near the sk guild, near some froglok slave or in the little building. I spotted him by the froglok slaves

    the Mortician

    say
"i need a mortar and pestle"

the mortician is in a building on the right of nec guild entry (in west cabilis), when you come from east cabilis.. There's a vendor inside this building + the skelly mortician..

    let's proc !!!
    huh ? what's this 2HB.. well here's the recipe :
    - pick a mob, make this xmbrfll weapon proc, and do some bone fragments
    - put the bone fragment in the mortar. When you have 8 bones fragment, combine. you'll have powdered bone
    - Put all your powdered bone in the sack of pennance..

    blood water
When you reached 7 powdered bone, go back into cabilis. blood water is buyable by vendors. Buy it , put it in the sack of pennance, and combine. You'll have a full sack of pennance.

i found my blood water by the vendors who are in the isle on the left of mnk guild when you face the entry. That's the vendor with a tad in a gloomy bocal

    end of the quest
Go back to the guild, hand the book of the toilmaster + the full sack of pennance to master niska. you'll have the shackle of dust.

you can do this quest with an iks mnk, if you are not sure for the mortician part (nec guild too near).First attempt was with my hum monk and iks monk. I made the full sack of pennance with my iks mnk, handed it to master niska. Then i did the "book" with my hum monkess ("no" to master niska then handing the book to the toilmaster and rehanding the book to master niska). I redid the quest fully with my human monkess and had no trouble with reaching the mortician

I hope this infos will help.. I have been able to do the quest with dubious with swift tails. You should abandon the bone quest when dubious with monks, because this penance quest = like 60 bone quest or more. So doing 2 or 3 times this quest will max your faction with swiftails.

Now to continue the shackle quest you need maxxed faction.. (indif for me)

Just to point this out. This is not necessary for the EPIC, the Whistling Fists (the weapon) is not part of the epic quest, Robe of the Whistling Fists IS part of the epic quest and has nothing at all to do with the WF(weapon) quest.

heh i did all this, went to master niska and gave the book + bag filled with penances... what i got? Faction. is this quest broken or something? i didnt get my bloody shackle =( then i did it aain (again the proccing and proccing and proccing and proccing ..... ) and i gave it to her again and AGAIN i didnt get my shackle..
altho im an iksar monk, shouldnt it be the same? and your faction needs to be amiable to do the shackle quests, not maxed. oh and i petitioned it twice, didnt get any help. plz let me know if you know how this could happen.

It may be faster in some cases to multiquest the 2nd, 3rd, etc, item than to do this quest. I'm not familiar with all of the quests for all of the classes, but none of the ones I can think of require you to combine the previous weapon in a box or something in to get the reward.

In order to multiquest it, first get all of the items required for the 2nd quest on the character you want to receive the reward. Then camp him in front of the turn in npc and create a new iksar of the same class. Turn in the newbie item, then camp to your other toon and hand in all of the other items.

Does anyone know if there are any faction hits with this quest, and if so, how significant they are? If these give better faction hits than the bone chip quest, this might be a much faster way for non-iksars to gain faction with people in Cabalis after becoming dubious.
    SK HOW?
    # Aug 06 2002 at 4:42 PM Rating: Decent
Ok I did it SK style and let me tell you that I did look for the guild mastar who is suposed to give the quest. Well it is not the guild mastar who gives the quest LOL!!! You dont even have to break you legs trying to go up that Stu...id ladder!!! The NPC who hands you the quest for SK is the spell vendo on the second floor in the west tower. He he ! Just hail him and he will ask you if you have the symbol (or statue) well dont worry this is the right one he he! I am lvl 51 Reaver and this thing took me 1 hour and half. If you can go straigh to Kurn Tower (skelly time!). The only way you will have the bone fragments is by using the wepon.. you see when it procs it makes the bone fragments. It is a 2hb wepon Thank god mine was at skill 200. Ok the good thing about going to Kurn while you are doing this part is you can get the glowing skull at the same time for the test of the zealot. Well I hope that this helped you. If you need more info I am on Luclin server.
P.S. There is a short cut if you dont wanna do this quest. I tryed creating a new Iksar Sk and handing my Pawn's Khukri(you get it by giving your note to guild mastar) to Lord Gikzic to see what he would say. He said that "I did not understand what he asked me!" instead of "You are still missing some components" Therefore I decided not to take any chance and do the penece quest and the pawn quest (very easy 30 min max). When I went to hand in my new pawn's khukri and the bag of sarnak heads (sarnak whelp heads) Gikzic handed me my new Knave's Khukri AND the pawn's Khulri that my "test" sk char had given him. This means that you can just create a new char SK (Iksar) then give your pawn's khukri to Gikzic, CAMP your new "test" char, log your main SK char and hand in the bag full of sarnak heads and TADAM!!! you will have you Knave's Khukri without doing the penance quest He he!!

I am now at betrayal test and did the whole thing in one day!! wassssaa!
But I have to admit that my lvl 51 helps me alot.

    Good luck all.

when youre lugging around an extra 0.8wt, and you just got something better and less wt, and already have the next shackle, you dont think to keep the old one, you think oh i can free up weight. should have banked it instead of destroying it. folks dont expect to hand not just the previous shackle in, but the one before it.

Reply to a very old post but whatever, someone with same problem might need help.

To bypass the bone powder quest make a Iksar of the class you need and do a MQ of the regular quest. Just make sure the last toon/alt to hand-in is the one you want to have the item. Should work unless this has been changed.

    Good Luck Folks.

just a bit of follow up... looks like for those of us who the iks sk reeeeally hate (trolls etc..) u must turn in around 1k + of bones to a crusader outside cab. first before u can get in safely to finish this part. then do this and the daggers quest in loio to really boost up the cab faction for all the guilds needed to get the greenmist. (shammy, nec, sk) tough but if i can ever complete it, WELL worth it. Stiv Batorz still Troll ugly and 48 ;)

Heads up!!! this isnt just to get your newb weapon back. at lvl 50 any sk may use the faction gained with sk/necro's in cab. east to do the quest for the greenmist sword. if you havent seen the greenmist sword i suggest you go look it up. it is hands down one of the best 1hs sk swords in the game. and since it is 1hs you can also use the great high lvl shields that are denied you if you use the more common 2hs or 2hb sk weapons. dmg/delay is near that of my Mithril 2hs and has incredible stats to boot. get that faction up early youngling sk's ;) (and yes any sk can do it, my human sk friend finished it at 57 recently and i started faction building the next day)

Sadly, the guide you've linked now states that this quest has been nerfed (or more accurately, eliminated completely). It is unfortunate, but since it sounded about a thousand times easier than bone-chip questing, I can certainly understand why Verant would want Cab faction to remain as difficult to get as it always had been. Oh well. Back to wiping out a billion Kurns' skellies....

The quest still works from what the post says, you just have to kill lots of explorers instead of just buying the knives. So its basically a "trade your Firiona Vie vaction for Cabilis faction" quest.

Well, if people can't get that part straight... Just follow the instructions IN THE BOOK the toilmaster gives you. It states to bring the book and filled penance bag back TO HIM. You do know how to read don't you?

i have completed my shackle of tynnonium, and want to get shackle of steel again, in case i have to turn in tynn to get whistling fists.
is this quest still active, and if so, is there a level limit, i am 51 and no one in monk guild responds to any sort of message about me not having my lost shackle of dust.
