At the end of the previous quest, Loremaster Borannin told you to ask him how you could further advance your reputation with the coldain.

You say, 'How can I further advance my reputation with the coldain?'

Loremaster Borannin says '______! Thank Brell you're here. I was about to send one of my Lorekeepers looking for you. It appears that the information Tanik acquired is most perilous indeed. The Dain has called an emergency session of the council and I must attend. We don't have the luxury of waiting for an appropriate task to arise, you must advance as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I have neither the time, nor the components to fashion the next few shawls for you. Ask Rexx Frostweaver about the prayer shawl and follow his direction carefully.'

Rexx Frostweaver may be found in the Thurgadin Exchange, near the bank.

You say, 'Hail Rexx Frostweaver'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Hmmm, ye be one o them offlanders, don't ye? I've heard some strange tales o yer kind so don't be tryin' any funny business with me. I know the value of a platinum piece and I'll not get cheated by yer foreign coin.'

You say, 'I am here for the next prayer shawl.'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Gather five strands of crystalline silk thread and combine them in a sewing kit to make a crystalline silk fiber. Take this container and combine a glowing shardworm bile with three of the fibers to form a piece of glowing crystalline silk. Five pieces of glowing crystalline silk sewn to your fur-lined shawl will yield a beautiful silk shawl. Become a master in the art of tailoring before risking all you've worked for and be sure to let me inspect your work when it's complete.'

You receive a Glowing Bile Soaker.

Crystalline Silk Thread is an uncommon drop from various spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth. Glowing Worm Bile is a rare drop from various shardwurms in the Great Divide. You will need at least 75 threads and 5 biles, provided you don't fail at all. Combine 5 Crystalline Silk Threads in a sewing kit or loom to craft Crystalline Silk Fiber (trivial 51). Combine 3 Crystalline Silk Fibers and a Glowing Worm Bile in the Glowing Bile Soaker to craft a Glowing Crystalline Silk Piece (no-fail). Combine 5 Glowing Crystalline Silk Pieces with your Fur-Covered Coldain Prayer Shawl in a sewing kit or loom to craft a Silk Coldain Fur Shawl (trivial 115). If you fail the final combine, you will get your Fur-Covered Coldain Prayer Shawl back.

Give the Silk Coldain Prayer Shawl to Rexx Frostweaver.

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Splendid, ______, this is beautiful workmanship! As the Grand Historian may have mentioned, our esteemed Dain Frostreaver the fourth is making some important plans with his council. These plans will doubtlessly include you if the Dain deems you worthy.'

You say, 'Am I worthy?'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'To ensure your worthiness you must continue to refine your prayer shawl. Speak with my wife Betti regarding the embroidered shawl and listen carefully to her words. Hurry now, there seems to be a sense of urgency about.'

Okay, I've just started and I can tell this is going to be a looonnnnggg quest. The tailoring alone is killing me. The posts on this thread have really helped though. I won't do anymore tailoring to raise my skill until I have a good DEX and WIS buf. No since wasting anymore time and money than I have to.

I'm trying to figure out a way to get my tailoring up without having to learn smithing. I think I just might skip over making studded armour and put up with the failures jumping right into making cured silk armour. I can make my own heady kiola pretty easily.

That said, where is the best place to gather a ton of regular spider silk? I've tried tried WC..not bad. I've tried WK...not as good. Right now I'm up in Everfrost killing spiders up there. It's okay since there is never a shortage of spiders, but what a tedious job running around killing spiders.

The only fun part of this quest is getting to group in Velk. At least you get some action and exp. I may back off fighting and take the advise of those saying to get the bile first in the interests of saving room in my inventory.

EK is probably the best place Ive found for silks esp as a druid. If theres something we druids are crap at its killing greenys, we cant melee so even though we dont get hit it still takes a while. I just befreind and feral a griffawn in EK even a lvl 20ish griff hits much harder than I do and with a little help and a regen can take the hits and kill carrions crags which have been known to drop up to 8 silks. The crags mostly wander around the hills.

OK, bought the large sewing kit, got a stack of velks silks to make crystal silk armor, but it sayd wrong container type. does this mean I have to use a loom? I see ppl in velks tailoring the threads so is there a conatiner i need to do this in ?

Guys, here's the deal. The spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth can drop both crystal silks (which stack and can be used to make crystal silk armor) and can also drop crystal silk threads (which do not stack and as far as I know are only used in this quest). That is, the spiders drop two differen items. From what I've gathered, the crystal silks (used for crystal silk armor and which look like Old World spider silks) drop more commonly.

if you haven't gotten an answer, I did exactly the same thing, then re-read the quest, in order to combine the swatches and the bile you need the container from Rex Frostweaver (in the Thurg bank)
RE: container ???
# Dec 07 2001 at 8:58 AM Rating: Good
No, the large sewing kit works. You said you got a stack of Velks silks. The silks you want don't stack. They're nodrop and look like a pearl necklace. Simply put 5 of them in your sewing kit and hit combine. Hope this helps.

Shaman of Morell-Thule

P.S. if you do want to make silk armor then the silk that stacks is what you want. First combine two pieces of silk to make a swatch. Then combine a pattern, a silver thread (can be bought in Thurgadin) and the appropriate number of swatches for this pattern. For more info- check out http://www.eqtraders.com

Remember to combine crystalline silk threads to make a fiber.... not crystalline silks to make a thread. THe threads are dropped... you don't make them...
RE: container ???
# Dec 15 2001 at 9:35 PM Rating: Decent
The message "You cannot combine these items in this container type!" can be 2 things: Bad recipie, or wrong container. For instance, lets say you're making banded boots. One flask of water, one boot mold, one sheet of metal. But for some reason, you put two! You will get this message. But if you put the correct ingredients in say, a tailoring kit, you will again get the exact same message... Hope this helps, good luck :-)

5th shawl in the bag and trivial at 115. I probably would have jumped off the roof if it hadn't worked. I found the quickest way to get my tailoring up was to buy HQ cat pelts by the stack from lowbies in EC or EK and make quivers.

Well I succeeded in making this shawl last night with a skill of 121. I had a shaman dex buff and boon which put that at 253 and my int was 245. It was trivial. Now on to the next but I hear it takes a much higher tailoring skill so I'm off to work on that for a bit now. GL everyone )

The bile took me a few days to collect but found them on the other side of the tunnel. Not the falls side. There are plenty or wurms there. Now I'm off to get the rest of the threads I need and I'm going to try to combine with my skill at 121. I'm hoping that will be high enough to do the job. I found making Wu's armour more of a pain then anything else. All the brewing you have to do just to make one item. Anyway guess I'll let you know if 121 is enough. Only need about 25 more threads first :)

# Nov 17 2001 at 10:03 PM Rating: Default
Made two attempts at combining, one at 105 (failed) and a successful combine at 116 Tailoring, and it was trivial. The bloke who failed it at 144 was incredibly unlucky, but I can verify it IS trivial at 116; remember if you fail your combine it won't give you the trivial message, even if it is.

Basically, I wouldn't attempt this quest until you're at least 50th and can reliably get into a group at velketor's, because that's the only way you'll get the 75 threads you'll need. Crystalline Silk is an uncommon drop there too, which is handy for skilling up (a better place for silks alone is the mines underneath Thurgadin, and in Crystal Caverns near the queen room -- although you won't find much xp in those places at 50+).

As stated, the shardwurms that have the bile do in fact glow -- although it needs to be nighttime for you to reliably see it. Remember to hit "/dynamiclights on" if you haven't already.

Good luck if you attempt this, it's quite a task and the first 4 shawls are quite crappy; it's only once you hit the 5th shawl and up (where you start getting extra stats and resists each upgrade) that it becomes a funky item to have.

YES - Give the finished shawl to Rexx.

After you are successful in tailoring the shawl, give it to Rexx. It is than that you hear the trumpets and the 5th shawl quest is complete.

This part terrified me, I was worried I would lose the shawl, but I gave it to Rexx anyway, and the trumpets went off. I didn't notice anything else, I was a sliver from having my blue EXP bar filled, and it stayed that way.
glowing bile
# Nov 14 2001 at 3:05 AM Rating: Decent
The glowing bile comes off the wurms in GD took me about 2 hours with a friend to get all five. Found most on the other side of the cave from thrug and river. They do glow in the caves or at night when it is dark, though sometimes it is hard to tell which ones glow. All, or most of the ones I killed were green to me at 53 if that helps.

Finished the 5th Shawl Quest today. Was trivial to me at 118 tailoring.
I went to groups killing crystilline spider in Velks and asked to loot the threads, and had no problem finding a group to let me loot. Had all my threads in a 4-5 hours.
BTW, The trick with the particle density REALLY worked! Was easy to see which wurms had glowing biles and which one to by-pass. Just look at the ground. Thanks for the tips....on to the next shawl. )

How many silks you need
# Nov 02 2001 at 4:26 PM Rating: Excellent
16 posts
Ok if my math is correct you will need the total of 75 strands of crystalline silk thread.

5 strands of crystalline silk thread = 1 crystalline silk fiber

3 crystalline silk fiber + glowing shardworm bile = glowing crystalline silk

5 glowing crystalline silk + fur-lined shawl = beautiful silk shawl

5 x 3 x 5 = 75

Now, your likly to combine the first part right there in VL to make the crystalline silk fiber so you will still have to have 25 open slots. These babies do not stack. That means that 3 full back packs +1 slot (or hopfuly 2.5 if you have hand made backpack) will be needed just for the silk. But then you have to have a sewing kit wich must be empty exept for the components. I suggest you get the glowing shardworm bile first before heading ot VL to get the rest. Combine them right there as you loot them and you will start to clear your invitory again.
Why Dex???
# Oct 24 2001 at 11:38 PM Rating: Default
Does Dex help skill increases for tailoring? Why did you think you needed Dex? I thought tailoring was Int for skill increases and Wis for success...
RE: Why Dex???
# Oct 31 2001 at 2:51 PM Rating: Good
OK... you can verify my story at eqtraders.com.

With ANY craftskill, there are two components that determine you chance of increasing you skill. One is EITHER your intelligence or wisdom, whichever is HIGHER (the other is irrelevent.) The second is the affiliated stat... STR for smithing, DEX for tailoring, etc. These affect your chance for raising your skill.

ONLY your current skill level determines your chances of success or failure. This information came directly from the lady at Verant who is in charge of tradeskills.

I just did this part - I gathered the biles at the Shardwurm cave the river runs through in GD, and got the Silk Threads by sitting on the Frenzy deck in VL, ingratiating myself by Twitching hilevel Clerics :)

Tailoring was the tough part. I overpayed n00bs to farm for me, spent endless hours in EK, WC, and the Deserts of Ro, and went dumpster diving all over Norrath. It took me 2 months or so (no, not dedicated Tailoring months) to get to 101.

The final combine on this was done with Tailoring 111. It was NOT trivial, and in fact, I gained a point, up to 112. I suggest getting a serious INT or WIS and DEX buff before your attempt. Why, you ask? :)

http://pub13.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornerfrm61.showMessage?topicID=3.topic

Out of curiosity, bravado, and sleep-deprived giddiness, I clicked my completed fifth shawl on Rex Frostweaver and hit the Trade button. I got the following message:

"Splendid Markoff, this is beautiful workmanship! As the Grand Historian may have mentioned, our esteemed Dain Frostreaver the fourth is making some important plans with his council. These plans will doubtlessly include you if the Dain deems you worthy."

That's it. No faction or XP hits - checked my inventory, the cloak was there, unchanged.

Seems no one has answered this yet, though the question has been asked twice..
When you are supposed to show a part of the quest to a npc.. what happens/what do you do?
Does the npc 'cancel' the trade after you attempt to give it to them? or do you get it back after clicking trade?.. would be really annoying to lose something we've worked so hard for.. thanks for the info and all the other posts that have helped thus far.

let me get this straight...

5 dropped threads = 1 fiber
3 fibers and a bile = 1 glowing silk
5 glowing silks and 4th shawl = 6th shawl?

is that right?
can i get a yes or no from someone who actually did the quest.

if this is right i need 5 biles and 75 threads?
damn b they better stack huh?
now i have to weasel my way into a velks group at 46...hah!
RE: is this right?
# Oct 07 2001 at 8:13 PM Rating: Excellent
Mostly yes.

It equals the 5th Shawl.

You need to carry around a Coldain Tanners Kit cause the silk threads don't stack. And neither do their end result. So unless you have room for 15 silks you should hunt the glowing worm bile first and carry around the that bile extractor thingy.

I am hunting wurms right now and what a pain in the ***. I'm killing one about every 6-8min and have only seen 3 bile in about 6 hours. And only kept 2 because I aint rich and 2kpp is to hard pass up.

I have no idea when I will see the other 3 but by god if that combine fails this a quest that is going on the shelf for a while. :)

2 looted off young 1 off elder, biles that is.

I actually went around to the groups killing spiders and asked if I could loot any threads for buffs and no one had a problem with it.

Man I need about 10 more bank slots though.
5th Shawl failure
# Oct 07 2001 at 11:18 AM Rating: Default
The only thing that trivial means is that you won't gain skill from trying to create that item anymore. It is not related to success rate. I just failed the 5th shawl with a skill of 131. I don't know whats needed to not fail the 5th but I'm not going to try again until 150-160.
RE: 5th Shawl failure
# Oct 12 2001 at 9:00 PM Rating: Decent
This is true. The crystalline silk fibers were trvial for me at 51 (when I combined 5 for the first time). I did not fail in making them even once until I combined 5 threads for the 16th time (to make one more fibre than I needed). This failure occurred with a skill of 124. Another tidbit: glowing crystalline silk is not trvial at 124 (I have made 5) but I am not sure this is even a skill combine, so perhaps no message is forthcoming. Other posts here indicate that the shawl itself is trivial at 115. I will find out when I log on tonight :)

Update: Success! at 124 skill.

The spiders drop a number of different things. The silk threads look like a pearl necklace or a cloth choker. They don't stack. I carry my sewing kit with me, and as soon as five have dropped, I combine them. (They're trivial but I still have a very high failure rate, so anyone who thinks they're going to make this shawl with just seventy-five threads is also thinking they're going to win the lottery.)

Crystalline silks look the same as the web off a normal spider and when combined with another silk makes a silk swatch. Use these to raise your skill in tailoring by making crystalline silk armor.
